@@stevethea5250 You may be able to circle the center of the IHS with your tongue like it was Bill Gates' nipple, but some of us are not that dexterous during the tongue application process. Best to keep it simple.
Looks like a great solution for noob PC builders. Can't really mess it up like adding too much or too little thermal paste. I am really impressed by the thermal conductivity performance, basically on par with a good thermal paste.
i would assume it would benefit Laptops and consoles more ... i mean laptops suffer more of high temps a with the already crappy factory applied thermal paste .
actually its long life would prove it to be a pro product choice. No annual rebuilding to replace old dry paste. less maintenance = more gaming and less worry.
also you can mess up the application as its conductive. its certainly not something you want a nervous yet overly exited noob to be handling.
@@thehumangerm The reason I want it is so i don't have to find a tube of thermal paste when i want to do anything with my PC. Can just re-use what's already there.
@@amineabdz biggest trouble with laptops and needing the thick paste is the amount of flexing and moving around they have to endure wtih less then perfect flat surfaces for thinner pastes =pump out . I can see this working quite well in laptops for that reason and might even pick one up my self, as once you remove the thick paste on a laptop if you replace it with anything in the thin area it will get pumped out unless you win the cooler lottery on the laptop

In the future, a direct comparison with the IC graphite thermal pad would be great, and a proper sized pad from thermal grizzly lol.

Probably works way better if you don't touch it with your hands or get it dirty at all. so it's just the carbon directly contacting the CPU no grease and other debris

and you'll be all "Listen here you little shit, only the ametuers used to spread it, the pros used mounting pressure"
So unless you’re exotic cooling and extreme overclocking it’s good enough and a one time purchase, no complaints.
Der Bauer made this with ln2 in mind as well, since a pad can't crack.

@@stevethea5250 It's what pc overclockers call Liquid Nitrogen. The 2 comes from chemistry, denoting that the Nitrogen is in a covalent bond with a second Nitrogen atom.

I saw you were handling it with your bare hands, won't the oils from your fingers effect performance? Not to mention dirt and grime on the pad effecting how well (flat) it would interface?
How do you know it's easy to tear? Did it tear because you were flopping it around throughout the recording of this video?

No. The best are soldered IHS. Pads can’t touch thermal paste either.
@@Cerus98 considering how bad intel's TIM is... this might actually be an upgrade, though of course solder beats it by a large margin.
If anything it makes more sense to have these preinstalled on the cooler.
Cyberdyne - Many good CPU coolers have preapplied paste. My Kraken did. Since there’s not much actual difference between brands of paste it works just fine.
Color me impressed! Love that there's an option like this out there. I probably won't be using it in my build for a while, but good to know it's an option.

Steve Thea obviously it’d be like your typical mid range thermal compound for gaming. if the cost isn’t too high compared to other thermal pastes it’d be pretty decent for all use cases

I'd like to see what this would do on a Radeon VII replacing the graphite pad.
I think the Radeon VII dies are too uneven for it to work well. Gamers Nexus made an excellent video about it and tested mounting pressure with pressure paper. So they basically used a thick graphite pad, so that they get contact on the whole GPU.

What I love the most is how many benchmarks you see with AMD now. Couple years ago AMD was hardly ever used for anything in videos.
Amd Ryzen rocks. Just came over from the Intel dark side with my new Itx build. So far so good. Sick speeds and great performance.

This looks like such a massive improvement for me over thermal paste for my uses.. I always screw paste up, definitely will be using this the next time I need to replace my thermal paste to spare myself some headache.
I used this product when testing out different CPUs in my rig. It works well and only noticed about a 2 degree rise in the temperature. One thing to watch out for tho is that it tends to slide around and get off centered when installing the cooler
I am definitely in the ‘piece of mind’ camp. I love building and tweaking computers, but I’m not after the highest frame rates or lowest temperatures (I’m more of a budget guy), so these sound great. I can tweak and rebuild and not have to worry about the paste.
I wonder how it will hold up over time while repeatedly being moved from system to system for testing. All that touching it with your fingers will transfer some oil to it and that will build up with dirt and dust sticking to the oil and I imaging that might degrade performance over time. Still far more reusable than thermal paste, but maybe something to keep in mind if you plan to use this to standardize tim application for thermal testing.
Just use gloves. Everyone should be using gloves anyway for handling internal components.
Greg does Science Studio know when these are available to buy in the US? Buying from Case King seems to incur shipping costs greater than the pad cost. There is the IC 40x40 option available right now on amazon, but it would be nice to buy the TG 38x38 solution with slightly better operating characteristics if possible. Any chance Science Studio can provide insight on US purchasing?

actually Gold is a worse heat thief than Copper ...i know, it`s strange isn`t it ? best thermal conductive material is Diamond (and his brother carbon nanotubes : same carbon atoms sic ) followed by Silver than Copper

How did they deal with the electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes? Is the form chiral or zigzag instead of "armchair"? I'd think that would be a consideration, considering how well they can conduct electricity.

Epic, a great solution for replacing thermal pads on the ps4 pro and xbox one X.
The Innovation Cooling product seems to work just as well. Used it on my R7 1700, and it stays even cooler than the stock Heatsink with OEM paste.
Genuine question, would the grease, oil, salt, dirt, basically 'grease & grime' from his touching and also scrunching the thermal pad so much make a difference in the cooling? I'm genuinely curious if that makes any difference?

My immediate thought is that it might be easy to shift the pad one way or another when you install the cooler. Did you find that was an issue at all? I feel like it would lead to some bad over heating if a section of the cpu was just not covered....
This looks very interesting. Would one use the smallest size for laptop CPU and gpus?
With this stuff I expect traditional thermal paste to become a purely enthusiast product; this stuff is so good at the low end, and only a bit more expensive, it would make the amateur builder's day so much easier. Applying thermal paste was almost always the most stressful part of the build process, and now that doesn't have to happen any more!
Wouldn't performance degrade after a while with handling? Getting finger oils on it etc.

I started using IGC's graphite pad and after a month of use noticed one thing, My 2400g being cooled on a H60 its temps are roughly 1-2 degrees higher than when using stock TIM but the temps are way more stable now. I'm assuming this is from being a thicker medium the heat has to move through. So I traded I slightly cooler system for one that is waaaay more stable and doesn't fluctuate by 5-10 degrees like it used to.

The only risk I see with this is that it could collect dirt, debris or even hair (seen at 10:28) which could hamper performance. Still, its very innovative!
Thermal compound doesn't lack this possibility either.
It's just this thing has the possibility of existing outside of a PC build because it's a solid object that's easily manageable.

@@carolusrex8293 He means because it is a pad that will obviously get handled more (touched, moved around, set on something, etc.) compared to squirting paste onto a die right before placing the heat sink, it is far far more susceptible to getting 'shit' on it.

Well he is flopping it around everywhere, touching it and placing it on tables, so thats quite obvious, if you transfer it correctly you should have any problems, also using some kind of tweezers instead of your hands could help with keeping it clean too
have liquid metal on my intel cpus. damn it was hairy though. left a log in my pants putting that on my 8086k & 8700k. for general use mx4 is a great paste i use often due to its price. these are an option as the amount of times i am changing coolers or cpus it would help me a lot
liquid metal is .01% better than safely lapping the ihs and heatsink with quality as5.
@@markm0000 AS5 sure is quality but there's much better options on the market now. I recently did my final application of AS5 after over 15 years of trouble-free performance :D

It's now the year 2020 , We all need a recap of how it's holding up over time .
I am thinking of using Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut or Arctic MX4/5 for my new build. I have read of people complaining that the Kryonaut is that sticky removing the heatsink has resulted in it pulling the CPU out of the pins when re applying thermal paste. Arctic MX 4 is easier to use but temps have been reported a lot lower than using Kryonaut. So just wondering which one would be best to use?? I will be building a system around the intel core i9 12900k

This is very exciting stuff. Taking the CPU cooler off is my least favourite part of any rebuild. Haaaate having to redo the paste.

I understand wanting to give AMD some love, but why would you use an Intel pad on an AMD CPU when you most likely have an Intel you could use?

didnt use the same pad on the puter, had one just for flippy floppying around to show people..what I was thinking.
What if you put a few drops of ultra-quality paste in the middle... partly to hold it down and simplify the process, and partly to fill in any gaps. Would that make it run cooler while destroying its longevity?
This came in handy for updating bios on my motherboard while swapping cpus.
I use listerine cool strips... keeps my CPU fresh!

The carbon nano tubes are the reason for the conductivity thermal paste would clog it and create a big blob of nothing but heat problems.

So maybe a stupid question but if this was cut down to size could this be used with a delidded cpu instead of liquid metal or would the thickness cause problems? Because you said that, on paper anyway, this was awfully close to conductonaut.

So he makes a big thing about how 'Intel gets all the love' when it comes to testing so he's using an AMD build to even out and better represent the market but then discovers that the thermal pad he's testing is designed for Intel, that it's too small his AMD setup, and yet HE STILL USES THE AMD SETUP!... ... ...
He even openly acknowledges there will be a thermal difference... The whole point of these types of thermal pastes, liquid metals, pads, etc is about making relatively small, even minute gains against other compounds, and he's just throwing that out the window because he felt like using an AMD setup? On a channel called 'Science Studio?'

Why would you specifically test it on an AMD cpu to "be different" if the pads you have are designed for Intel chips? I feel like that's not a very scientific approach.
Interesting. I wonder about the performance impact from fingerprint oil after multiple reuses or just handling before the first use. Many people won’t bother with gloves or tweezers.

LM is only going to get you a degree on average over thermal paste.
On gpu LM lowered my temps for 10-11c

What if it gets dirty when applying second time for example? Could that ruin performance? Can these be cleaned in some way, maybe washed even?
Ill give it a shot since I use kryonaut on my 8700k@5.0. I have to remove everything to properly dust every 2 months so this could come in handy.

So what are you suggesting? That the temps will drop by like 5 degrees because of the little space? When you already start with thermodynamics and heat transfer physics, then also you need to factor in, which part of the ihs will be heated the most :)

Could you do a video on direct die cooling solutions please? While I'm here whats different with a direct die cooling solution? I know if I simply put a typical air cooler on the cpu without paste or in this case a thermal pad, bad things will happen. What I don't know is why.
What if you add a modicum of paste to the pad? Not to soak the pad, but an amount that won't escape the pad if you wring it or squeeze it.
How much of an effect does it have when handling it like that, waggling it about adding oils and contaminants from your fingers like grease etc. ?
Cool! I've used the IC graphite thermal pad for a time for testing systems and components. Being a pyrolytic graphite solution, it works great, especially under high mounting pressure. Unfortunately, I found it tearing over time, so I went back to paste. Definitely gonna try Carbonaut out once I can order them locally. Even though Germany is just 20KM away from me, they charge a fortune to ship it across the border
