    Some online videos advise us not to take calcium supplement because of its potential risk of triggering heart disease or stroke since the calcium might be going to the artery instead of the bones. Does this cause any concern ?

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  Місяць тому +1

      I think there is always room for concern. Calcification of the arteries is generally a problem from taking too much calcium from a supplement. If we don't get enough calcium there is a problem for our bones for sure. There are several things to consider when deciding whether or not to take a calcium supplement. First, are you getting enough calcium daily through diet? It is important to track your calcium every day for about a week to determine that. Figure that there is about 300 mg of calcium in one cup of milk. You get about the same amount of calcium from one cup of cooked Bok Choy as you do from a glass of milk for perspective sake. Once you know how much calcium you are consuming on a regular basis then you can see whether or not you have a gap. If you have a gap it is better to supplement the amount that you are short. That may only be 300 mg instead of 1200mg which is the daily recommended amount. That is one way to ensure that you are not getting more calcium than you need from a supplement.
      Next you want to consider the type of calcium that you are supplementing. Calcium citrate is generally well absorbed. So is calcium hydroxyapatite which is the form that our bodies actually use in our bones.
      The next thing to consider is whether or not you can take vitamin k2. Vitamin k2 helps to get calcium out of our blood and into our bones where it is supposed to be which helps mitigate the potential issue of calcification of the arteries. When looking for a k2 supplement you want to take one that is in the Mk-7 form in the amount of somewhere between 100 mcg and 200mcg. The only thing that could potentially be an issue with taking vitamin K2 is if you have to take a blood thinner. If you take a blood thinner check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if it is compatible with taking K2.
      I hope this information is helpful in determining what is right for you regarding whether to supplement calcium or not ❤You may not need to supplement calcium if you get enough through food sources. If you have a gap I believe it is better to fill the gap than have a deficit. You want to make sure you are not taking more than you need.

    I really appreciate your videos. Thank you for offering them. Here is my experience...A few years ago I was told NOT to take calcium but rather 2000 IU D3 and K2 100mcg. My provider now is a NP (Love that) and he hasn't chgd the recommendation (after blood test).. But Last year I was diagnosed with osteo (age 69). I've continued with D/K but hesitate re calcium. My chiropractor told me she has found whole undissolved calcium tablets in Patient xrays and recommended a particular powder form of calcium. For the last year, I have been doing weight bearing exericses 3x week, that include machine leg lifts (30 lbs)/leg pushing (50 lb) and machine pulling down weight (30 lb) for arms. Also dumbell 10 lb and wall pushups. I'll find out later this month if I now have stability or improvement and hopefully not worsening. I'm looking forward to your next video.

    I'm so overwhelmed. I received a dexa; I know my numbers. It's only by researching have I started to learn more about nutrition. Still, it's A LOT. I'm also a newbie when it comes to strength training. What's that? :D I would love to work with a PT who specializes in osteo, but so far no luck in finding that professional. I am going to need to cobble this together sola. :( Good news though, I am learning so much about nutrition: protein, vit k, vit d, calcium, and gut health. I'm aiming daily for consistent macros and moving for my 1200 mg cal daily. :D Soy milk, fortified oj, tofu, almonds, greens. . . it's a process. I only supplement as needed. Food is Queen.

      @@mariezinna8724 I have heard of this one and I think that first a multivitamin it is a good choice. This really comes into the realm of what is ideal and what can be managed well. AlgeaCal falls into the range of what can be managed fairly easily and is pretty good. I think with supplements there is always something we can do to improve them, but is it worth actually doing because it might drive us nuts in the process… AlgeaCal is a good choice for a multivitamin ❤️
