As a successful orchestrator/arranger, I have long held the opinion that The Philharmonia have one of THE most perfect string sections of any orchestra. One day I hope to work with them. They featured in a brilliant TV series dedicated to them a few years ago. That they are producing content of this superb quality during such a strange time in everyone's lives is wonderful. Bravo Philharmonia!
This has to be hands down the most useful, informative and perfectly executed educational experience I’ve had the pleasure to enjoy. And what amazing playing, string section artistry at its highest, the Debussy around 11:03 ish had me in tears, amazing to hear it so raw in the section like that. A million times a thank you for the content
Wow, thank you so much for this fantastic feedback. Thank you for spending time with us. Please do subscribe if you have not already - we have another section intro coming up in a few weeks.
This is why I subscribed to this channel. Insight into the orchestral sections, both as groups as individuals. This informs my compositions to be more realistic when working exclusively with recorded samples on my computer.
Loved this video and hearing the outstanding players. As the former leader/composer of a big band I was sometimes at odds with one of the players who didn't seem to think that the flute player/s should have a mic. Of course they do to stand out in amongst much louder players and the harmonics of instruments like the double bass. I suppose that in a string section, the strong sound comes from many players playing the same parts. This is surely the equivalent of having them amplified.
The strings section just fills up *so* much of the frequency spectrum that it blends sounds together. I always describe the strings as an ocean of sound or like the wind.
That performance of Tchaikovsky Symphony 6 with strings-only works incredibly well! Would love to see an official release, all the renditions I find are with a full orchestra
One of my favorite orchestras. if there's an orchestra who nows how to blend colors and textures, it's the Philharmonia (and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw) !
Thank you so much! These videos really add to all the enjoyment from seeing & hearing an orchestra in action. (Really missing concert going this year!)
That's wonderful to hear. We miss concerts, too, but we're glad we at least can share some insight with audiences in the interim! Thank you for spending time with us online.
Poor violas. I still don’t know where they sit, who their principal is, when they get the melody, the distinction between their instrument and others in the string section...
Glad you're enjoying the series! It's certainly our plan to do one for every section - but it's probably only going to be possible to continue making these once the pandemic is over (hopefully soon!)

Lovely -very interesting too.
I loved the way the string section’s sound melded together, how they breathed and phrased as One … perfect! 💛

👏 Let's not forget the percussion section. It's the beat and pulse of any ensemble. 😉 🎶
We haven't! We've only made two sections so far, but we would love to be able to do more eventually.

This is only 20 players? Sounds very big at times. Makes me rethink my string sections

Bruckner 4 best viola melody
I love this series. I came from the woodwinds introduction and I was wondering would you also be doing a video for the Brass and Percussion?
Glad you're enjoying the series! It's certainly our plan to do one for every section - but it's probably only going to be possible to continue making these once the pandemic is over (hopefully soon!)
Do you have a video like this for the Brass Section?
At the expense of sounding too American, y'all doin' The Lord's work here. Thank you for teaching classical music. Thank you
Could there be a more insightful explanation of the string section?
Thank you!
The Double Bass uses alot more Pizzicato in the Jazz world.
Ook!
No mentioning of violas? 😢
Not sure why but whenever the first violin woman speaks I feel like it’s being dubbed. Maybe it’s because she have a nice sounding accent
She's an Aussie, born in Melbourne!

Is this video record before the pandemic? No Mask??? LOL😉
Hello! This was recorded well before the pandemic.
