- This video of Bach's partita in d-minor is a small testimony of my long journey with the works of the old master.
Every violinist has a very individual, singular approach to it - and herewith, I humbly add my own.
It was recorded at the baroque church of Riegel in Germany between 10 pm at night and 4 am in the morning in order to not have any light from outside.
As far as the video-material allowed, all the cuts were made with great care and reference to the musical structure, so they actually help the viewer to better understand the piece. Much attention also was given to the synchronization of image and sound.
All my gratitude belongs to the film-team who helped me realize it:
Above all Gregor Graf whose initiative, resourcefulness and tenacity were crucial to complete such a difficult task: Creating an image with the light of a Rembrandt painting, an atmosphere as listeners must have encountered it when hearing this work during Bach's lifetime.
I also thank David Bollinger, who recorded the sound I am so happy with and with whom I share my place of origin, the small swiss town of Schaffhausen.
On this first November 2022 I dedicate this recording to my grandparents who were the reason I chose the violin as my instrument.
The manufacturer of the particular one you hear on this recording, a Ruggieri from 1687, my grandfather gave to me when I graduated in 1994. The wonderful baroque bow I am using was made by Luis Emilio Rodriguez Carrington in Den Hague.

This is playing of great intelligence and commitment- expertly conceived, with a natural flow. Convincing musical ideas in the pacing and highlighting of the different voices in each phrase. One of the finest interpretations- and the virtuosity was in the wisdom of the conception- there were no superficial displays of showmanship. This was music making that lived up to the genius of its creator. Brava, brava a thousand times over to Helena!

Sounded strange to me for the first few bars, as I’m used to tune my violin at A= 442 Hz. This was lower, probably 432 Hz, so not the usual baroque tuning at 415. Anyhow sounded very nice when I got used to the tuning.
