Hope you are all keeping well - if looking at history teaches us anything it is that even the worst times will eventually pass. Wherever you are in the world, take care and if you are bored at home I hope this video makes the next 39 minutes slightly more entertaining.
Awesome!! Welcome back!
Much love from NE
Hello! Welcome back! We Love you! Thank you for all of your hard work!!! 🙂🙂🙂♥️♥️♥️😎😎😎
😝
Your channel is the epitome of quality over quantity.
FACTS 💯
Yes!
FRFR 💯💯💯
Agreed
36:41 is a picture of Grand Duchy of Lithuania slaughtering the mongols - has nothing to do with the story being told.
This is one of the best history channels I’ve seen in my life. It’s legit better than the “History Channel” on TV
Check out mark felton productions
Johnny Yen He’s pretty good too, I enjoy his Vietnam and WW2 videos, but just imagine if they did a collab together that would be great
They dont even cover history anymore just conspiracy theories and shitty reality shows.
Impervious they have both been around for forever. I think dark docs is more reliable than dark 5, which was the original channel. UA-cam now requires videos to have a voice for monetization.
Does History Channel still do those alien shows?
5:12 "flocking to the banners of the seemingly invincible cabbage"
6:19 "empress Maria who was currently being besieged by the cabbage"
7:14 "where he was officially proclaimed emperor of Bulgaria, yet there was little time for the cabbage to revel in his new found laurels"
8:06 "however the cabbage still refused to give in and during the spring of 1279 he carried out a dramatic escape"
Imagine peasants being lead to victory by a vegetable, absolute bliss. Its achieved great things in its life
and imagine if that vegetable was more hard hitting, like melon.
My man was so sick of Mongols sacking his shit he kicked them out, killed the emperor and married his wife. Cabbage, the absolute Alpha.
The madman Cabbage
and ironically Nogai the khan who had him unceremoniously executed was beheaded by a soldier of his rival Tokhta, after being wounded while fleeing for his life. Should also mention that Michael the VIII of Byzantium while a successful ruler and founding a dynasty which lasted for over 200 years, his policies also directly contributed to the fall of the frontier of Byzantium to the Turks and eventually paved the way for Byzantiums slow painful decline and eventual death to the Ottoman Turks, though the decline was not entirely his fault.
It's a bit dampened when it turns out that Cabbage was abusive to his wife.
What a top tier giga chad
The first guy is straight out of mount and blade, raising an army of inexperienced plebes into a fighting force to be reckoned with. Personally injuring a rival in the field, rising from extreme obscurity into the most important man in the region
Nah it's from history of humans. It's happened time and time again. When tyranny becomes to extreme the people revolt. We're about to see the next major one with weapons that can destroy humanity.
@@codylupul5608 and I cannot wait 😂😂 I hope it happens humanity has become way to evil
You know you're a bad ruler when a cabbage defeat you in battle and take your wife
Just what I need while quarintined
Same here.
Your imperial majesty.
Tsar Nicolas II No need! Mother Russia shut its border down relatively fast and is seeing very small amounts of infected!
@The Nova renaissance my wife and Rasputin urged me to do so
@The Nova renaissance to hide from the reds
I want a title like “the cabbage”
Aatolviina Järvi the Renegade Radish
Try being the cucumber or carrot. You will be very popular among the woman ;)
The way they called him actually translates to pigherder ivaylo
got it, Your Onion now
How about Baibars: from being sold into slavery by the invading Mongols to becoming the mightiest man in the Middle East as Mamluk Sultan: defeating both the Mongols as well as the Crusaders.
I’ve been watching your videos for over three years now and I’m extremely grateful for your work. Thank you unknown5!!!
Glad to see you uploading again! Appreciate it.
These are always the best stories when someone who has nothing becomes powerful through sheer determination and ambition
And murder
I don't think people had the kind of ambition we think of today; more they did what was needed to survive
@@gabrielhoops6644 they did
This is one of you tubes best channels by far..... Highly under appreciated.
What about Tamerlane, a crippled peasant who managed to become one of the greatest conquerors ever seen?
❤
He was not peasant, His ancestor was 'Bodonchar Munkhag' a Mongol Warlord who is direct descendant was Genghis Khan so that making him Khan's relative sharing same clan name "Borjigin" and his father was some sort of tribal leader in Chagatai khanate (Genghis's Son). Man These Borjigin people had something enormous in their DNA.
The only list channel that matters. I always look forward to these.
You're back ! Thank you for another
Really love the fact that you do brilliant videoes and havent sold out with 5 adds per video legend for that! Also each video is brilliant.
Always worth the wait ! Love this channel
The 2 things I love about this channel:
1) There's a calm, soft voice sometimes explaining the most brutal and disturbing episodes of ancient history. He is like "then everyone starved and they started to eat their own entrails :)"
2) It's always a top 5, yet it lasts like 40 minutes. This is totally fine, specially now that we are quarintined.
He's not like any other top number channel. He actually has passion and explains his topic unlike other lifeless and shallow top# channels.
Interesting. Entertaining. Thank you for making quarantine WAY better!
No matter how long I have wait, it's a mesmerizing pleasure to listen to your voice while watching an excellent video, Professor.
Another excellent video. Always worth the wait.
This is a great video and list, it definitely put more obscure individuals on this video. This needs another part!
Honestly i think Stalin should have been on this list. He was born on the very fringes of the Russian empire as a cobbler's son and despite having almost no charisma, being a horrible public speaker and simply being not that well educated, he managed to become the leader of the Soviet Union through to sheer cunning, brutality and a healthy dose of luck. Not to mention that he wasn't even a Russian native.
In any logical scenario, Stalin would have never risen to power. And yet he did.
That can be said about most great leaders of that era. Hitler was a homeless failed painter, Tito was a blacksmiths son, Mussolini was a gradeschool teacher
Who’s Mao long dong?
In modern times it's easier to climb in the social mobility so stories about Stalin or Hitler aren't that impressive compared to these men who had to overcome the social caste system and their birth status
@@cv4809 You are absolutely right mate
Same as Saddam Hussein. They both shared the same psychopathic character. Saddam looked up to Stalin a lot.
Dude your videos are always so well put together even though it is 39 minutes it will probably be the next hour and twenty minutes I always watch most of your new videos twice in a row.
You do a great job...I think underrated is a word over used but I have no words left to explain the job you do.
Man I love these videos!!! This is a great topic as well. Take care!
Never did I ever think I would hear the phrase "seemingly invincible cabbage"
As always another excellent video thank you stay well!
I love this channel! You do your research brother and it shows. Not just that but you're a good story teller too mate.
I look forward to everytime you release a video. Keep up the good work👍!
Perfect timing - was just having breakfast!
Interesting. I'm having supper 😂. Hello from Kenya
Such an underrated channel, fantastic content
Thank you for the video !
Fascinating video bro, good stuff.
I've always liked history even as a kid and i have to tell you that your channel is definitely the most interesting and informative one out there i have only recently found it but i'm glad that i did thanks again and keep up the good work :)
A super interesting topic as always! love your content ideas and your voice man always looking forward to more!
Nice to know there’s hope for us all mere mortals
I'm a simple fellow. I see an upload from Unknown5, I click. I am not disappointed. Another fine work my good sir 🧐🙂😎
Aww mannn was wondering when the next upload was gonna be! This looks a good one too, well they always are

yay! A new video, thanks!
Everytime Unknown5 uploads, my day just instantly gets good, no matter how stressful it is.
Another great job
I fucking love you Unknown5. You’re literally my favorite channel on UA-cam.
Stuck inside, so an unknown 5 upload is a great surprise.
A very good video as always thnx.
Man, that was an interesting list. Well done.
Nice to see another upload🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝

You and me brother ~
LET US RESTORE PEACE TO THE COUNTRY!
HAH GAYYY
@HengistUndHorsa Peace is the premonition of death.
Nice to hear about Bulgarian history in a foreign (from my perspective) video :) Thanks!
Was thinking of you doing 5 Battles Decided by a Nameless Person. Sometimes, the acts of a soldier or officer could decide the outcome of the battle, though the person would never be known by name. One example is Cynosephalae, in which a Roman officer whose name faded into history took 20 maniples of legionaries to deliver a knockout blow to the rear of the Macedonian Phalanx.
Take a shot every time you hear the word “Peasant” or “Nobility”.
He forgot Adolf Hitler he was literaly homeless before he became the diactor of half of Europe and a Alliance web from Italy to finland
Holy shit, no views yet. You do such great work, you’ll end up getting that gold play button for sure.
Biographics - the poor man's Unknown5 . Some of my favorite content on the entire platform. Every new upload from you is a treat, keep it up!
Pretty cool video, but there was slight misconception with the pictures showed. During the "Ivailo the Cabbage" (also known as the pig king, since he was a pig farmer before he rebelled) most of the pictures were random Greek historical pictures, while During Basil the 1st, when talking about the guy you showed the portrait of the Bulgarian king Simeon the 1st on numerous occasions...
I still liked the video but that is interesting. All the facts are still correct though?
@@garrettmarshall7664 basil is all correct (state of our knowledge), and I assume the same is true for cabbage (i only know the roman and mongol side)
I like this guys voice, very calming
I miss you mentioned Justin I and his son in law Justinian I. But, I will not complain, because your content is always remarkable! As somebody had said in this comments, your channel is the prove that quantity never beats quality. I wish you success, brother!
this gives me hope!
Unknown 5 uploads. Today is a great day
All right - an upload from you guys while I'm staying home as much as possible!
youre a shining light in dark times lol thanks for the upload needed something to distract me today
China has another emperor who was a peasant that became extremely powerful and that's Liu Bang.
Liu Bang was a small city guard commander who had seen the rise of Qin Shihuang, the 1st emperor to unite China and also see upon his death, how much more of a tyrant and ruthlessness his son was. Watching his entire city suffer from such brutality was unacceptable and he wanted to have a rebellion but din't have the guts to till he met his later ally/rival Xiang Yu and with boyh being ambitious, they went on a rampage and knocked out the Qin.
However, Liu Bang was kind and thoughtful while Xiang Yu was prideful and spiteful. Liu Bang's ambition was to unite China under one rule where everyone can live happily but for Xiang Yu, his intention was to restore the Chu kingdom and rule everyone under an iron fist. That made alot of people clamouring for Liu Bang and that soon caused a rift between Xiang Yu and Liu Bang which became known as the Chu-Han Contention but it was Liu Bang's tenacity that won him an empire that became the setting stage for world diplomacy with things such as imperial exams, the Silk Roads and the only kingdom to rule over 5 centuries before its eventual collapse during the Three Kingdoms period.
Liu Bang never achieved what Zhu Yuanzhang did .
I wouldn't say liu bang was kind and thoughtful , far from it.
@@natalkumar6132 But there wouldn't be Zhu Yuanzhang is there's no Liu Bang.
Liu Bang basically made the Han Empire, the longest serving dynasty in all of Chinese history and because of him, everything we know about later dynasty like the Song, Tang, Ming and even those ruled by the Mongols like the Yuan and even the Manchu Qing all copied Han's system of governance and even populated the Silk Road. If there's no Han, there's no modern China. Heck we even call ourselves as "Han Chinese" for a reason.
@@ballsack6547 He wasn't but at least he was way more thoughtful than Xiang Yu.
If you want to talk about how he handled his top general Han Xin who helped him win the war in getting the throne then yes, that was shady af. Liu Bang had wanted to tape Han Xin down but he couldn't find himself to do so so his wife, Empress Lu who was a paranoid freak, ordered the execution and the extermination of all of Han's direct and indirect families without Liu's knowledge. When news got to him, Liu was showing polarizing results of empathy and also joy as he had wanted to take him off power and remove him from office while letting him retire elsewhere far from the throne while his wife did something that he dare not do and that's to kill Han Xin.
Cabbage is my new favorite hero, now and forever
You can tell this guy reads.
He may just be a narrator hired by someone
@@annettecollins6576 someone reads.
I’m surprised that you didn’t include hideyoshi toyomi who has a peasant or liu bei a sandal maker also a Matt maker and also ieyasu Tokugawa who has a hostage in the imagawa clan also rose to great power also gengis khan who was homeless with his mother became a powerful ruler also Catherine the great who was born into a minor noble family became a empress of Russia Sorry about that my history gets mixed up my bad I have played the dynasty warriors and samurai warriors games
I agree with Toyotomi and Liu Bei as 'nobodies who rose to great power,' but Tokugawa, Ghengis Kahn, and Catherine II (the Great) were of noble standing despite their humbling life experiences as they were born the son of a minor lord, the son of a chief, and a princess respectively. (Catherine I - not 'the Great' - did rise to great power as Empress of Russia beginning life as a lowly peasant).
I'm sure their team considered those guys but they are limited to lists of 5
Pikachu the big Japanese nerd.
Catherine wasn't from a peasant family and temujin was the son of a leader
Ok so I agree that Gengis Khan was the son of a tribe leader, however when he was still a kid, the tribe abandoned his family, his father got assasinated and other life threading events. However he still prevailed and at his empires peek, conquered Parts of Asia, Eurasia and some parts of Europe. Also his empire existed for around 800 years
Despite being a huge supporter of your work, as a bulgarian I have to share my observations. While talking about tsar Ivailo, "селският цар" the rural tsar translated from bulgarian, in 0:29, 3:02 and 6:46 you show indeed tsar Simeon I who rules hundreds of years before Ivailo's leadership back then in the late 14th century. The same image used in some of the above-mentioned moments also appears in 13:40 and 15:50 when you talk about Byzantine, which is even more absurd. They( Simeon I and Ivailo) are even from different tsardoms. This fact actually makes it difficult for me to somehow relate these two men. Keep up, tho
Hideyoshi Toyotomi and Abraham Lincoln deserve a spot too.
Celestine V (Peter of Morrone) was a hermit monk living in cave in Italy before being "elected" Pope in the 1200's. There's a whole mess of political intrigue wrapped around his story, too, of course. He ended up dying in prison after being locked up by the Pope who succeeded him.
great video!
It's Tsar Simeon, not Basil I in the picture at 13:43.
Loving that boethius reference in the intro I geeked outttt
Great video mate.
A few similar leaders to consider - Genghis Khan, Chandragupta Maurya, Tamerlane etc.
Great African and South American leaders are also rarely seen in similar videos.
Cheers
Yes thank you I feel like people don’t know Genghis Khan’s early life and they never realize how sad and horrible it really was
Couldn't help but chuckle whenever the first guy was referred as the cabbage 😂
Make a video of top 5 SIMPS who overvalues famous females of the century
That guy from usefulcharts is a good contender.
Idubbbz
I should be on that list lol smh
Good idea, that will make him more popular among bitter losers from 4chan.
Haha for the win
Good vod
Wowowow who do you think you are posting earlier than 3 months? You caught me slacking
This is probably the most inspiring video I've ever watched. My higher education was completely worthless and now i clean horseshit for a living. I often feel like my life is a dead end. But after hearing a true story of someone like zhu yuan zhang who was far worse off than me and became a freaking emperor, i have hope that one day i will make my mark on history.
Are you obsessed with the history of Christendom/Christianity in general, who would like to help me create an animation project about the history of Christendom/Christianity (Battle of Tours, Battle of Covadonga, Battle of Nineveh)? Movies/animes about Heraclius, Charlemagne, and many other heroes of Christendom... My discord is Proletariado#4420 Just add me if you're a Christian who's up to it!
Not everyone born for greatness sprry i doubt about your opinion and i dont usually comment bye.
You go for it don’t listen to the negativity
Manny Pacquiao is the new generation of rags to riches and power. From a paper boy now a senator.
GuildBankLooter
Am i telling a lie?
1. He was a pandesal and paper vendor
2. He became a senator
Tell me the lie on this one?
Being a senator isn't the highest achievement, the profession of the senator nowadays is a joke
C V
Lol so you rather have him as a paper boy rather than a senator and help his people? People who say its a joke is probably underachieving at their age.
Totally, His fighting spirit is not bound to the boxing ring either. It's a wonderful man.
Donnie Buenaventura amazing fighter. He supports murdering people, though. I am a capital punishment supporter and such, but gunning down drug addicts in the streets for some asshole president who’s alleged to also have killed people is disgusting.
Woooo unknown5
I love your voice
Nice instead of giving info u make me fall asleep
John Hawkwood is awesome. I’ve always been fascinated with him
I've read "John Hawkwood: An English Mercenary in Fourteenth-Century Italy" by William Caferro. What amazes me is that nobody has made a mini-series about him.
There is more intrigue, political maneuvering, romance, and conflict in his life than the Sopranos, Band of Brothers, and House of Cards put together.
What about Napoleon ? He went from being nobody to becoming the most powerful man in Europe
he was still a minor noble
@@jessefisher1809
Exactly
@@jessefisher1809 He wasn't a noble, wtf are you talking about? Middle class.
@@fidelio9301 Yes he was born into a minor noble family... a quick google search will show you this.
@@jessefisher1809 They were bourgeoise, you can have roots in nobility and not be considered noble yourself, there was absolutely no way that they would have been considered aristocratic at the time, just well to do. If you compare it to what he became especially.
missed
Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Great video, but funny thing is almost none of those pictures are of the Ming dynasty.
Liu Bang the first Emperor of the Han Dynasty he rose from rags to the throne too.
I read the title that quick I briefly read noodles then you go on about a guy called cabbage & people eating their words.. *Mind blown*
Correct me if I am wrong but would toyotomi hideyoshi be able to be on this list? I heard he was a shoe attendant and eventually succeeded oda nobunaga.
I love those really old b/w photo's of Roman legionaries 25:50
watches this video... wants to become John Hawkwood even though John awkward fits my description better lol
Having perused many of the previous comments, no one has mentioned the famous Biblical example of Joseph in Egypt as described in the Book of Genesis. King David had been a shepherd. The Roman emperor Pertinax was the son of a freed slave. Some have mentioned Lincoln but not Lincoln's vice-president Andrew Johnson who never spent a day in a school. His wife taught him how to read. Of all the presidents of the 20th century, Ronald Reagan came from the poorest circumstances. He grew up in rental housing since his father never owned a house. Truman came from simple beginnings. Khrushchev was a metal worker.
The story of The Cabbage sounds familiar. His error was not to kill off the treacherous nobles and replace them with loyal vasals of himself.
i can sleep while this man is talking about massacres his voice is so chill
13:49 and 15:52 Not Basil but Tsar Simeon of Bulgaria
Im not surprised Bulgaria was on the list as soon i saw Tsar Simeon. I didnt think the cabbage was gonna make it on the list lol..
btw im named after the tsar :D
I would included unknown5 on this list he will reach heights of power on youtube
Crazy isn't it some people owe their power and reputation to some ancestor who through cunning violence and down right luck
Well get through this ❤️🌍🌎🌏
The most amazing story was about misterious millitery how they fight without any dasignation. Sound amazing
Can You do a forty-five minute presentation on the best historical fiction novels and movies???
