  • "The ego establishes relationships only to get something. And it would keep the giver bound to itself through guilt. It is impossible for the ego to enter into a relationship without anger, for the ego believes anger makes friends."
    The ego seems to attract through its own version of "love" in the form of affection, special favor, and attention as making one feel special that demands sacrifice. It demands obedience to meet standards of judgement on the penalty of condemnation and guilt as the special love relationship.
    "In one way or another, every relationship the ego makes is based on the idea that by sacrificing itself, it becomes bigger....the root of its bitter resentment....Yet to make guilty is direct attack, although it does not seem to be. For the guilty expect attack, and having asked for it they are attracted to it."
