A Tour of Duty is when you're "in country" or in a hostile environment for around 6-12 months. Then you're typically "rotated" out into less hostile environment for duty. This allows soldiers to decompress, get new training and/or assignments. It might mean taking leave domestically to visit your family or whatever. Doing a "Tour" means you've been through this cycle once. Doing "Tours" means you've done the cycle multiple times.
James was emotionally detached as a defense mechanism. Doing that caused his emotions to come out strangely (during the barracks fight). It's a coping mechanism to allow him to function in the high stress job he does. He's also a bit of an adrenaline junkie in a toxic way and wants the stress to make him feel something because his defense of blocking out "normal" emotions has left him completely dysfunctional when it comes to emotional processing in a normal way. That was the original kid at the end. James' reaction was emotionally shutting down because he realized he'd gone Old Testament on a bunch of Iraqis for the wrong reason. He knows his flaws, but also embraces them because it allows him to do his job. He just doesn't know how to be a normal person in a regular environment anymore. This happened to Persian Gulf vets. They rotated out or were honorably discharged and didn't know how to reintegrate back into society because they were so used to living on the edge and being suspicious of everyone and everything around them.
Hi Steph- Thanks for reaching outside your comfort zone to share this review with us. I think your reviews are so good as you share how truly impacted you are by the content being watched. As far movie genres you choose to share with us, I'm happy to follow whatever choice you pick. I think you have great judgement, and your selections reflect positively on you. All the best, M-
This was a excellent reaction. I get this film was intense to you and i understand that. I hope we can do what we can to help our veterans out there for all they been through💯. Anyway thanks for the reaction and the review:)
James’ motivation is that he has over some period of time, detached and become an adrenaline junkie. He loves it because it gives him situations where it’s the bombs vs his brain / knowledge / steady hands. He gets off on the indirect combat. He antagonizes the soldiers around him because of his caviler attitude, but they also envy him because it has made him a superior bomb tech. He goes home and though he loves his family, he’s bored and nothing can supply his adrenaline need ….. ie…. Film ends with him landing back in Country, with a new tour on Delta team! James is happy again… Facts are that many combat veterans, bomb techs, and combat medics / corpsman never truly find a way to reintegrate back into family life / society. Just look at the number of “dysfunctional” veterans in our country today. Enjoyed the reaction.
As for your "Saving Private Ryan" reaction that you talked about at a screening for the film there were a few WWII veterans that had to leave during the D Day scene at the beginning because it stressed them out so bad so don't feel bad with your reaction to the War genre they can be really tough for some.
@@cinemawithsteph It brings back memories. Memories you don't want to think about. I'm former EOD and was in Iraq. I turned the movie off halfway through it and have never watched it since. The movie got a lot of things right in it, even things most people don't believe to be "correct", but, they weren't there, weren't in that career. The same goes for any war movie and the people that were actually there, whether it was D-Day, Somalia (Black Hawk Down), Iraq (Hurt Locker), etc; you see things, experience things, and have spent the rest of your life trying NOT to remember those things. And, no, most people can't imagine. Some can because they had trauma in their life that they can't stop thinking about and don't want to be reminded of from a movie.
I have no idea how I would do in an active war zone. I'm guessing not well. That's why when I say to a vet, "Thank you for your service.", it isn't just a throw-away line. When someone has gone so that I didn't have to, it gets real in a hurry. My Father served in WWII. I almost went to Vietnam, and I knew a few people who did. All were affected. I am indebted to all of them.
Whoa! You got through that! But, if war movies are not your thing (along the lines of Saving Private Ryan or this one, I mean) but still would like to watch a light-hearted 'war' entertainer, I would suggest an oldie 'Kelly's Heroes' (*ing Clint Eastwood), if you can get it, and most certainly 'Tropic Thunder' (*ing, RDJ, among others), which is not really a war movie, but looks like one.
Excellent, looking forward to seeing your reaction to Taking Chance with Kevin Bacon, Something the lord made with Alan Rickman (prof snape) and The Kingdom with Jamie Fox all great films.
Hello 🙋🏻♂️👋🏻😊 This movie was spectacular and it is also on my list of best movies! The film is exciting and the scenes are incredible. In my country it came out in theaters without censorship and on DVD, Blu-Ray, UHD also without censorship What do you think about it? this? I hope you answer the message please 🙏🏻
Hi there, It’s a good question that I haven’t thought about too much in the context of film. Generally when I think of censorship, I think about books as I spend a lot of time reading and hear about that more. I’ve only read 1 fantasy book before that was banned and after reading it, I didn’t see why it should’ve been, but I know everyone has their own perspective on that. Regarding other comments you’ve left on this video, I try to respond to a good chunk of comments and the newest ones show up on my app first. I won’t always respond to every comment as I’m not a full time creator, and I’m also not required to. Being pressured to doesn’t incline me to want to either. I do this for fun, not as a career. The vast majority of creators don’t respond to every comment but if you look around you may be able to find someone that will.
You'll be fine, hopefully by the time you read this. Knowing your limits is always useful. You may ask yourself what it is about war movies that affects you. For example, if the setting was fantasy for sci-fi, could you handle the same content? Also, don't be surprise if you eventually start liking (good) war movies. I've seen other reactors have a very hard time with war movies but their "skin got thicker" over time. There are a plenty of great non-war movies for ya out there, so don't push yourself. BTW: I started watching your reaction to the last Bourne movie, but I stopped because I realized that I needed to watch the movie again (to refresh my memory) before I watch your reaction.
It’s definitely possible to come around to it, it’s just pushing myself through watching more in the first place, you know? Yay I hope you enjoy it on your rewatch!
@@cinemawithsteph I had an idea. If you are interested in getting used to war movies, perhaps watch a few of the older ones. Since you seem young, you are probably used to stuff to on TV that would have a hard time getting an R movie rating 50+ years ago. That is, old war movies might be tame enough for you or the special effects might look like crap by today's standards. Think B&W or early color war movies. Off the top of my head: "The Bridge on the River Kwai" and "The Great Escape".

I have never seen this flick, but I have heard many, many times that EOD guys kinda hate it because it's very inaccurate and rather sensational. Just food for thought.
Yes, SOME EOD guys hate it. Those EOD guys didn't get to work with a person like that Team Chief. I spent 10 years EOD. I actually had supervisors like that guy that kept trying to get us killed. So yeah, there was a lot in that movie that was right, even if some people didn't deal with it; others did. As I told Steph in a comment, I got halfway through the movie before I turned it off; hit way too close to home for me. The scene that did it? When the two other techs started discussing fragging the Team Chief. I've had that conversation, when I was in Iraq, because the guys in charge (our Captain and SMSgt) kept trying to get us killed. As for the scenes that can, and did, actually happen in rl? The opening when the guy in the bomb suit dies in the blast; correct. Bomb suits are rated for a maximum protection based on high explosive. Normally? The amount is over that protection level and that turns it from a closed casket to an open casket. That's it. The Team Chief being a loose cannon that does stupid stuff? Yep. Those guys are out there. I had them. The guy this movie portrayed was "kind of" based on a real guy. He actually came out and said so, complaining how he got no money and blah blah, and got reamed by techs, so, he shut up. The other team members having that, "do we frag him or not", conversation? Yep. Had that discussion. So yeah. I'm sure there are techs out there that went, "That doesn't happen!". It does. They just never saw it personally.
