Beating all the bonus stages with a CPU Tails is one of my proudest achievements in this game. Funny to see how this TAS even relies on a Player 2 to dodge those explosives.
The special stages really only need memorization. If you are playing with Tails and a bomb is coming up and he has some rings you can jump earlier so he jumps in time.

Sometimes in Sonic 2, if you can time jumps or go through the bombs in a way, you don't take damage. I've encountered it with emulators and the actual Genesis

Sonic 2 was initially meant to have more stages, as there exist evidence of 4 unfinished zones. These being (in order of appearance): Wood Zone, Hidden Palace Zone, Dust Hill Zone and Genocide City Zone. The finished version of the game has 4 left over soundtracks, which at some point were meant to be used in these zones. Three of which were used, but for the two-player splitscreen stages of Emerald Hill, Mystic Cave and Casino Night. The soundtrack for Hidden Palace goes unused, though it can still be accessed in the sound test menu, as track 10. Hidden Palace Zone got added back in Sonic 2 when the mobile remasters of the games came out in 2013. Though Hidden Palace eventually became a name of a stage in Sonic 3.
Since P2 can pick up and control Tails at any moment, wouldn't you be able to save frames with the Special Stages by having Sonic and Tails pick up an equal amount of rings and only pick up as many rings are required to beat the special stages, so that the score counter finishes with the gem bonus instead of spending extra time counting Sonic & Tails's amounts? Or does the timing method remove the end-of-level score tallies? EDIT: Also, given you literally only use Super Sonic in Sky Chase (an auto-scroller), wouldn't it be faster routing wise to only go for Chaos Emeralds 1 stage at a time, on the stages where it costs the least amount of time to collect 50 rings and find a checkpoint

You can’t fly tails in sonic 2. However, if you play the mobile port of sonic 2, press up, jump, and jump on tails.
