Joshua you missed the most important part of the BNF Hulk; it rights itself after a crash, and you can takeoff. Crashing sideways or upside down in the water makes no difference, the HULK flips itself right side up for you to takeoff. Nick Burns tried it in his pool and it was an awesome trick. I don't know if the FC in a different frame setup would do that. Video idea, for spring weather - how to waterproof a quad build. Thanks for the content.
Just about any frame will do that if you mount the pool noodles high enough. There may even be a case for strapping them to the battery on regular frames.
@@TheBadRaven Do you mean something similar to that one moment JB dunked the drone into the pool close to the edge so it took a second try to take off again? Yeah, if you hit a piece of debris floating on the water, it will be a little harder to take off. But Turtle mode should work just fine in water and the same thing can happen on land if you hit a tree or a bush and get stuck in it. Actually, thinking about it, this setup with the battery on the bottom may be worse when you hit something in the water and it's sharp enough to damage the battery. With a normal frame with the battery on top, you would be fairly safe.
In the days of large brushed motors we used to run them in under water. I have at times liberally washed mud and grit out of my brushless quad motors. However, I never waited to "let them dry", I span them up to remove most of the water, then used water repellent spray like WD40, and then span them up again (in a large cardboard box) to clear that, then used a warm hair dryer or radiator if in heating season (Thanks for the hair dryer, Dear.......OOOOH, did you not know?). I have motors dating back five years plus with that treatment taking place......... NO bearing issues, ever.

Drying the motors asap seems to be the solution for motor longevity. Typically my motors have to be in water for like a day before I notice issues. Other suggestions from people like the guy behind the deep 6 waterproof kit are spinning up the motors/flying a pack or two afterwards (if you’re just submerging it and the weather isn’t raining).
@@ezapata3200 All that will accomplish is a lot of WD40 on everything. Plus it is more of a penetrant, not a lubricant. Hi Josh, Great video and review of the Darwin Hulk. That was the reason I wanted to get it. Winter time is the worst time to fly. But with the Hulk, I could fly no matter what
I fly in light to medium rain often, nary a problem. Not for long, but a few minutes always seems fine. If it gets obviously wet dry it out good before using again. And I've plucked one out of a lake, and another out of a river, both still worked fine. 0 conformal coating.
Hello Bardwell, I have a problem with my Analog VTX. (Goku HM850) It worked fine, but now when I go on the Channel (on the Goggle) that I set in Betaflight, the signal isn't there. When I go to near frequencies the signal is here, but wery weak and the video has waves in it. Can you help me?
Honestly I have thought about and the motor is the weak point on a waterproof drone but if you use WD40 and spray each motor profusely after each flight to clear out the water you probably can keep the motors and bearings working quite a while. WD40 is great at rejuvenating gritty bearings also used to do this in RC cars all the time tbh. Conformal Coating the stator and using ceramic or stainless steel bearings could make the motor more tolerant to use in the rain etc.
I would probably pull the bell and pack with grease if I planned to get mine wet. They have grease made for bearings on boat trailers that is probably ideal. Repack the grease a few times a year and replace bad bearings as needed. The USB C port is likely OK as our phones are ip rated with these ports but I would watch the pads inside for corrosion over time. Could always seal it shut with shoe goo or something after tuning but you'll be picking it out later to upgrade unless you shoe goo a plug in or something.
poorly my first support case wasnt as cool as the stuff from them... tried to flash BLHeLi, done anything correct, took the right set of bin files (100% sure) ... one of 4 ESCs, gone... tried to reflash Bluejay (yes, it was a batch with Bluejay shipped, my second one was BLHeLi out of box), 1 of 4 ESC still gone... tried flashing, and flashing... nothing... after a while i finally did a wrong flash and took the wrong file. Reflashed the right one, 3 of 4 ESC gone... okey, fair, my fault... but the support also was just like "oh yeah, you bricked. (POINT)..."... i now wait for an arduino like board, to reflash it and unbrick... but i found out about this way, after i ordered a new one... btw. the new one also bricked, but after a mini crash on the grass... no answer from support for a while... just e refound of about 50% of the price... and thats after the first flight... okey, fair. ists a cheap drone, so full refund or 50% refund isnt a big difference... but could be better... Runcam, or speedybee support was completly different level! wrote with them, they looked interested in my problem, tried to analyse it with me... in the end after very good 5-6 mails with them, really friendly and good mails, they offered me to send me 2 new ESCs! because i had to wait, they gave me a lifetime speedybee app code FOR FREE!... poorly i forgot to write them after 3 weeks for the new batch to be sendt...BUT!! AFTER almost a WHOLE YEAR! i wrote them again... no hesistations, no mimi, nothing... my 2 new ESCs are on the way... questionless... THATS a freaking awesome support! ... but nevermind, back to DarwinFPV: I love the stuff, i love the babyape, i got me a third, and i will still buy the baby ape. in my opinion, the absolutly BEST cheap drone for around 100 bucks! great feeling, best with a HV LiPo btw. ... yeah, just felt to write this many lines hahaha

It’s funny when we mention VTX MW output for range, I’m running 200 mw on a flying wing and getting well over 700 yards. I’m confident I could reach a mile away with my little 1s tiny whoop vtx on 200mw. Now penetration is a different story 🎉
During the monthly product video you brought up the waterproof ESC/FC from Axis. Both of you seemed to think it was stupid. immediately ordered it, built up a BangGod with it, and then crashed it in the snow. Works great.
I just picked one up and can't get it to bind. I'm reflashing my TX firmware now because maybe it's a transmitter problem. The RX goes into bind mode, but the TX kicks out of bind mode after a few seconds.
As a technician, I can recommend applying hot air to dunked motors soon after. Blow dryer. Room heater. etc. After salt water, rinse the whole thing in fresh water vigorously and force dry. No air drying. Must be hot air to rescue bearings and other sensitive oxidized surfaces.
They’d need a grease port to pump in grease to the bearings if to prevent corrosion entirely, although if you flew it for a period of time after contact with water the heat generated should dry out the bearings slowing degradation although as mentioned salt would still add some factor, dunking in deionised water and then fly to dry should be even better.
@@Qwarzz grease is used with bearings to lubricate and lessen friction, the heat and water would remove that causing rapid bearing wear and corrosion, a grease port would allow it to be replaced. My tx16s throttle has been cutting off like this since updating to the flying dutchman 2.8 firmware.. Only happened a few times and thankfully never mid flight.
Any thoughts on using rainx or similar on camera lens to make water bead off? I've flown in rain and had rain droplets big enough to seriously obscure vision.
I have no idea. At first, it looked like it was moving slightly when I armed, but when I walked over to it, it was completely unresponsive even though receiver telemetry was still working. After power cycle it was fine :-/
@@JoshuaBardwell very weird 😐 I wonder if it was the RX or betaflight… the active TLM suggests the RX was working fine 🤷🏻♂️ Gotta love the random crap like this 😒
Likely a battery connector issue. Had it happen a few times with a hard hit (different vehicle). It cuts power so fast and comes back which causes this.
Thats ok!!! Who's buying that dji original v1 air unit today???? After the release the lite version (caddx/runcam link) nobody uses that v1 anyway!!! More space, more heavy, no mounts holes, plus the image never compare with one gopro!!!! For ME "" super normal DJI remove for the production that unit for sure!!!! Thank pilots!!! Correct, but I didn't want to swap the factory firmware for BF 4.4 in case it caused some issue that did not reflect the product as shipped by Darwin. I mostly try to review things in factory-delivered state.
Why did they put the motors down and the floaties on top. Why not put the floaties on the bottom and motors the normal way. Then the motors/props wouldn't be in the water when you arm and take off?
I'm totally going to grab one of these drones but what they don't tell you about is how you're going to go through Motors like water literally😂 would like to see a review on the 03 air unit model. Have a ton of water here in western NY by the lake.😮
The price is part of that. They have solutions for motors for this that wont die when submersed the first time. One college in Oakland has a program with a drone that can swim as well as fly without any physical human input. Has its own ballast that draws in water to right itself as it dives, then expels that water to turn itself back 90 degrees and make itself "upright" for flying again, right out of the water. The "Loon copter". Rutgers University has one too, though not as elegant.
@@crisnmaryfam7344 I don't know if I like their new version now they took the camera out and they put it in a box like a GoPro it looks weird 🤣, I'm just tired of companies selling us garbage the first time and then be like oh we'll get it the next time around and then they just keep selling us a different model and over and over again can we just build something nice the first time around
Things I’d like to know. Would this drone survive a straight dive bomb into the water? And, if you crash into the water, can you self right it if the drone is upside down ?
i run xing2 1404 3800kv on my 3.5inch and its an animal, it is 220g but still even with just 3520 props its insane, currently im running emax avan 3528 props and an 85% throttle limit and its about the fastest thing i have ever seen in my life from a stop, perhaps they wouldnt be big enough for a 350 gram 3.5 inch, but most arnt that heavy, if its that heavy the disk loading would be shocking, i could see the hulk motors doing well on a 4 inch prop or a ciniwhoop, but a 3.5inch racing or freestyle quad i think its far overkill and far too much weight out on the end of little 3.5inch arms that are usually 3mm carbon and really skinny compared to a 5inch, these motors would just make more issues than they solve, i do think they are too small for a 5 inch, but atleast you should get decent flight time. i have been looking at getting the hulk stack for my quad because i really like the way the esc and fc are fully encased, its just heavy and expencive tbh
I literally just flew my quad puddle of water. Currently driving it out on the Dehumidifier. I’m literally still looking for my screwdriver to take it apart.
He says PID tuning is meh, since i'm new to FPV, did anybody improve the pid tuning which i could adapt? I got the O3 version. updated to BF 4.4 already.
Check my channel for a video titled "Crashed my New Drone in the Creek". It's about 19 uploads or 2 months ago. Also have one flying in the snow and one in the rain. I don't dread rainy days anymore.
Smaller motor size isn't really an issue for anything that wont be sustaining high power like racing. But 1750kv on such a small motor is so low. If you went with 2100-2200kv 6s you'd get all the punch you need, and would be more responsive and you would likely never burn the motors either as you aren't racing.
You'll be saturating these smaller motors on flips and stuff with the heavy weight.... Even in 20mph wind you'll be able to tell the difference.... Could always throw a biblade on it I suppose, but they won't have quick response on 5" prop(compared to 2306/2207)
@@badfourlife Yea with those big floats inducing so much extra drag it definitively is a weird choice to go so small on the motors. Probably designed for cine/slow cruise
That vtx is potted in silicon so I guess you are worried about the connector contact points. I’d guess once mated it’s probably ok but why not glob something over it? You didn’t cover the cam I assume nothing special.
They should have used ceramic bearings. Sometimes when I build a skateboards out I use ceramic bearing to protect from water damage and it works very well. The only down fall is that they are very expensive. Also, they might not make ceramic bearings at the size needed for quads idk.
The old skitzo motors from like 5 years ago had ceramic bearings and they went to shit within only a handful of flights and a couple crashes. Also at $36 dollars a pop at the time, i was far from impressed but still have them on my TBS Vendetta which is still a cool quad till this day and ahead of its time.
@@smooth_ops2942 well obviously the Skitzo motors were trash. Why even replay with this comment? You contradicted yourself first off and second you're basically saying that the bearings I used in my skateboard wheels weren't good. JUJU CERAMICS BTW. And yes, those bearings sounded awful.
The takeoff from the water is such a cool looking thing
Long time listener first time caller. When are we going to get an update of your property on liftoff as well can we maybe get a window left open on the map so we can fly into the house lol
That's ultimately up to the Liftoff devs. I kind of like it the way it is though to be honest.
We wanna fly over you in your bed while you sleep.🤣
@Joshua Bardwell Well I'll sent them a strongly worded letter then, when I find my stamps their going to hear about it
I get that reference!
I wouldn't mind the field getting an update.
My tx16s throttle has been cutting off like this since updating to the flying dutchman 2.8 firmware.. Only happened a few times and thankfully never mid flight.
Any thoughts on using rainx or similar on camera lens to make water bead off? I've flown in rain and had rain droplets big enough to seriously obscure vision.
rainx works great, though will need airspeed to move drops off.
Was this filmed recently?
I'm honestly jealous you still have foliage on the trees...
It's like South Hoth here in Illinois.
Did the type c plug die?
I like how you took the wrong prop, it happens to me again and again altough I know exactly where each propeller goes
Would spraying a little WD40 into the motors help the bearings out?
WD40 would displace moisture, but I would be concerned it might also get into the grease and dissolve the grease in the bearings. Not sure about that.
wd40 is generally harmful and should not be used
@@JoshuaBardwell Maybe a teflon based?
@@JoshuaBardwell would inox work or a product you would suggest?
And a T bag sack made out of used dryer sheets around the motors?
Are you using a crossfire module with the boxer?
What was up with the random drop after punching it a bit? Determine a cause, or just weird unexplained stuff?
I have no idea. At first, it looked like it was moving slightly when I armed, but when I walked over to it, it was completely unresponsive even though receiver telemetry was still working. After power cycle it was fine :-/
@@JoshuaBardwell very weird 😐
I wonder if it was the RX or betaflight… the active TLM suggests the RX was working fine 🤷🏻♂️ Gotta love the random crap like this 😒
Likely a battery connector issue. Had it happen a few times with a hard hit (different vehicle). It cuts power so fast and comes back which causes this.
Yay! Its a Pusher!
Have a good fly time!!!!
Yea but I wonder how it would handle salt water after a few times of going in?
17:38min championship :D
Is it safe to dunk the lipo in water like that?
Man i was looking for that cinnamon-whoop shirt on the interwebs. Is there a chance to buy one anywhere? :)
So I'm guessing you would need an elrs module in the back of your control and won't bind to crsf.
No ELRS won't bind to crossfire. But the ELRS control modules are pretty cheap
Will be interesting to see the durability. My experience with DarwinFPV isn’t great.
Joshua, why do you have an elrs module on your elrs boxer?
Because the Hulk has an SPI receiver which is running ELRS 2.x, and I didn't want to flash my Boxer back to 2.x.
@@JoshuaBardwell there's a bf 4.4 release candidate that updates it to express lrs 3.5 Darwinf4sx1280hd I'm running it now
Correct, but I didn't want to swap the factory firmware for BF 4.4 in case it caused some issue that did not reflect the product as shipped by Darwin. I mostly try to review things in factory-delivered state.
Why did they put the motors down and the floaties on top. Why not put the floaties on the bottom and motors the normal way. Then the motors/props wouldn't be in the water when you arm and take off?
So that it flips itself right-side up if it crashes upside down in the water.
It's been pouring here in Knoxville for days
Didn't one of the Flynoceros frames used to have a similar design with the 3d printed piece going through the carbon like this?
@@BNIRc let me guess..you want it right now and dont want to wait months or years for testing and new tech advances.....its one or the other.
@outkast187 yup you got me figured out haha
Things I’d like to know. Would this drone survive a straight dive bomb into the water? And, if you crash into the water, can you self right it if the drone is upside down ?
Matt Pochwat has a video where he does just that
i run xing2 1404 3800kv on my 3.5inch and its an animal, it is 220g but still even with just 3520 props its insane, currently im running emax avan 3528 props and an 85% throttle limit and its about the fastest thing i have ever seen in my life from a stop, perhaps they wouldnt be big enough for a 350 gram 3.5 inch, but most arnt that heavy, if its that heavy the disk loading would be shocking, i could see the hulk motors doing well on a 4 inch prop or a ciniwhoop, but a 3.5inch racing or freestyle quad i think its far overkill and far too much weight out on the end of little 3.5inch arms that are usually 3mm carbon and really skinny compared to a 5inch, these motors would just make more issues than they solve, i do think they are too small for a 5 inch, but atleast you should get decent flight time. i have been looking at getting the hulk stack for my quad because i really like the way the esc and fc are fully encased, its just heavy and expencive tbh
Seen a review of this drone it's awesome.
I literally just flew my quad puddle of water. Currently driving it out on the Dehumidifier.
I’m literally still looking for my screwdriver to take it apart.
use a hair dryer way faster
@@fearlessflyersfpv420 already back in the air. No damage. I’m still a beginner, it was the Cetus x kit. Pretty surprised I must say.
He says PID tuning is meh, since i'm new to FPV, did anybody improve the pid tuning which i could adapt? I got the O3 version. updated to BF 4.4 already.
I have a lot of trouble with overheating of the air unit. Do u have any problems like that?
@@eichelcommander have you checked that the thermal pads have good Connection?
But will it Vanny style?
What’s the fpv
footage look like under water? I’m sure blurry
Check my channel for a video titled "Crashed my New Drone in the Creek". It's about 19 uploads or 2 months ago. Also have one flying in the snow and one in the rain. I don't dread rainy days anymore.
I could imagine the yaw jiggles being caused by those chunky boi waternoodle thingies😂
Okay I had to make a point that the Drone camps guy put hot glue over the motor wires which is ridiculous, thanks for explaining that.
Awww man, I want this thing, but it’s probably about to sell out again after this video 😂😆
Anyone have any idea how they are making the O3 version waterproof?
I really do not understand how you guys move so smooth in turnings, in my videos are like 1000 ping movements, like when you move with lag
Just practice.
I just noticed theat house is a the one in lifitoff game
Yeah but I get 12 minutes flight time on a 1550mha.
That vtx is potted in silicon so I guess you are worried about the connector contact points. I’d guess once mated it’s probably ok but why not glob something over it?
You didn’t cover the cam I assume nothing special.
Surprised you'd review this and not a Deep 6
When I bought my two AERODYNE NIMBUS I thought I would be flying in the RAIN. Snow. Sleet
AH BUT too nice to ruin
Lots of waterproof smartphones have a type-C port, shouldn't be a problem I think
Cool drone 😮
The osd was frozen when you crashed
I agree. But the receiver was still working. Suggests the FC locked up.
Awesome.
love this intro lol
You should go buy a few bags of salt from a fish store and dunk test it again.
Someone should make a collective pitch quad so you can go down in water and come back out and also fly out of water like a submarine-quad
Ooh puppy
I wonder if I can fly this in the pond out back and go underwater then back up 😂
it will lose signal after just a couple inches underwater. Antennas have to be above water lever.
Which is funny because the entire purpose of my comment was that i used ceramic bearings on multiple occasions, in my skateboard setups and they were great. Even when I would ride in the rain and in puddles the ceramic bearings would last for many months even a year or more. Ceramic bearing are great and just because you had a bad experience one time means little to nothing. Maybe next time you reply to a comment try thinking first k.
Anyone tried to waterproof the dji o3 yet?
