I was raised with a bipolar mother who medicated with beer. Most bipolar people, and in our family as well, we really didn't realize my mom was manic depressive as we didn't know anything about that disease in the 1950s and 1960s!! We were from Georgia as well! My mom would be up at 2:00 am waxing the floor in high heels and putting down 4 coats and told me it was so us kids wouldn't walk on it--! I believed that's how all moms acted till junior high Thats when I thought she was just eccentric. This movie really brought back the horrors of my childhood. But it also brought the good things too! My mom had the funny "proverb like" hillbilly sayings!! She also was a "mam-ma and my dad was pap-pa. My older sister would "rescue" me from my mom's crazy abusive behaviors. So since I lived this life I can really say something regarding the quality! So great acting to Glenn Close and Amy Adams!! Great direction from Ron Howard! I looked for Clint , Ron's brother, as he is always in his brother's movies but didn't see him. The actor who portrayed the son really stirred me when he would try so hard not to let others know how crazy his mom was at times and through your life you love that maniac mother with a fierce 💘. The way people think Southerners are ignorant and all the predjudice The courage it takes to try to explain it to someone you want in your life but also terrified on being rejected. We all have trials in our lives but crazy moms in the 1960s was really a tough one!!
Thank You so much for sharing your story! It is obvious from your writing that you are a well adjusted person who was intelligent enough to overcome the difficulties which others have found to be too immense to triumph over. Good for you!
Same experience here. My mother who insisted I call her by her name, would wash clothes over & over all night. Often while fixing a meal rant & cuss throwing pans & dishes against the wall. Never a dull moment!
I am the bipolar mom, inherited from my dad. I was never physically abusive, never self-medicated with drugs or alcohol, just verbal-shouted and hollered a lot-slammed doors, and suicidal. I am so thankful I finally got properly diagnosed when I was 49 and put on lithium. It saved my life. If you, someone you know or suspect is bipolar, pray for them to accept this truth about themselves and that they get help. Lithium is the gold standard for treatment. It is a beautiful think to be stable. 🙏✝️🕊️😔❤️
@uofa82 Thanks but I am an RN and very aware. I also forgive my mother but it was so hard to grow up that way. Having a birthday and kids coming and one mother calls all the other mother's to get their kids away from my mother. So many things...
Watching this movie was reminecent of my dysfunctional youth with my bi- polar mother. We West Virginia hillbillies relocated to Akron, Ohio during WW2. My sister died & it drove my parents crazy. My mother died in a Texas insane asylum, & my father became distant, mean, & died. My maternal grandmother was a saint & I honor her memory. I'm proud JD Vance rose above his upbringing. He'll make a fine VP. I let my dysfunctional youth get the better of me & became as violent & mean as my father. It took years & God's mercy to get that misery out of my system, & retired as a long distance trucker. This life is a "write off" so I've a sure hope in God's poromised new world.
We moved to Ohio when I was a kid. We lived in several states because of my Dad's business. I met kids like Mr.Vance. Ohio had a lot of families from Appalachia and Mexico in Ohio working in industry. In my area outside of Sandusky it was agriculture/ food processing plants. Decent hardworking people. They were hit hard by bad trade deals that trashed our American industry in mid -America. Many parents did not speak English and those that were from Appalachia often could not read or write. My Mom taught Sunday School. She wrote and read letters for her young marrieds Sunday School class members. When my brother's first grade teacher realized Mom had been an executive secretary and was literate she was so happy and drafted her as a room mother. No disrespect for the other Mom's they just never had the chance at schooling.
I'm not voting for you, sir, but as a recovering addict and child of abuse myself I applaud your dedication to your own wife and children above numbing the pain you live with daily. It is beyond admirable and I hope the best for your family. ❤

Pushing 60 and the book and movie resonates with me despite not being a hillbilly or from the Midwest. It brings back memories that I try to suppress from my own childhood. Growing up with a bi-polar mother with a Borderline personality disorder and surviving a childhood that included verbal threats from her stating things like “may the god of death be upon you” and “I tried to kill you but you survived the abortion”( I was 8) and running to my room, locking and holding the door closed in such a way that the knife blade wouldn’t jab me as it poked a good 3-4 inches through the door, I know just how difficult it is to go on to try to get through school let alone become a successful and somewhat decent person, but like JD I did. It’s real hard to describe how you do it while others can’t(I lost a sister at 38 who never was able to slay her demons and I ended up raising her 7 yo since her ex was a drug addict and incarcerated) but it takes a good amount of intestinal fortitude and tenacity and a will to survive to do what’s right and rise above your circumstance. I always felt that I also got lucky that I was born just a little smarter than most which put me in classes with the other “smart kids” from good families which opened my eyes to a world outside my chaos and gave me something to aspire to. That was part of her culture. My dad was a world war 2 vet and he said that the main reason there was not a Japanese ground invasion of the Us was due to its armed citizens. Like her.
She had to scrap money together for a calculator but was sitting on thousands of dollars worth of guns? Make that make sense to someone who has been too broke to ever purchase one.
I used to sell TEXAS Instruments in the 70's. And they were expensive. What year is this?. By 1990 the same calculator sold at one time 119.00 in the 70's was 2.99 at Kmart.
Will JD's childhood make him more or less compassionate toward those on the bottom of the economic and social ladder today? Is it: "I know how you feel; let me help you." OR is it: "I had it a lot worse than you, so suck it up, buttercup!"
They were invented so that hockey players could practice skating year around. The wheels are all in one line. My kids all had them. They were invented in MN.
Boy o boy.....I'm so glad Trump picked Vance as his partner. I believe he knew most Americans could not relate to Trump's own privileged upbringing and life. He knew Vance would be far more relatable. Vance is a welcome and needed addition to the American political landscape. 😊
Seems there are significant differences - but, all in all, having seen the movie and read the book - I can take on board the broad message and the goodwill of the book and am happy to accept.
How can someone who struggled with poverty as a teenager and suffered due to not having proper government insurance for his mother, now that he should be a supporter of the people, is against proper social security and sufficient government health insurance for old men and old women. Maybe this is not the story of his life
Vance is for the american people the middle class the elderly the poor he ate meals on wheels you dont forget being left behind! It is the fake news distorting the truth!
Read the book and advise you make your own comparisons. JD isn't exaggerating - Hollywood (Netflix) is. Once an author sells a book they lose artistic control and it becomes Hollywood's story and we all know about Hollywood these days.
To me one of the most telling things about the movie was the scene where the young grandparents were driving into Middletown and seeing US Steel plant thriving versus the next scene where the town was boarded up and the plant shut down. That is the catalyst that ruined industry, towns and families all over this country and what was tapped into by Trump. NAFTA was one of the worst things that happened to our country and it was forced down our throats by Bill Clinton and the country club Republicans. Bill Clinton and the country club Republicans were also instrumental in repeal of Glass-Steagall that almost wiped our economy and ruin many people's lives. Wall Street which backs Biden/HRC/ Obama came out smelling like arose with their "too big to fail" BS bailouts but the average working class men and women not so much. Trump and Vance understand that even though they are from totally different backgrounds. Biden/Harris/any Democrat could care less.
NAFTA was negotiated by the administrations of U.S. Pres. George H.W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, and Mexican Pres. Carlos Salinas de Gortari. Yes, Clinton signed it but was started by daddy Bush.
Does the movie make clear Vance’s childhood and teen years were spent in suburban Ohio ? A fact he glosses over in the book. Mamaw and Papaw moved to Ohio

He spent 4 years in the Marine and went to Iraq. After 4 years he left the marines to get an undergraduate degree, went to Ohio State, one of the oldest Freshmen, graduated Summa Cum Laude. Then he applied to Yale law school without any assistance from anybody. He got to Yale all by himself. What is the disgrace in his record?

And who knows what he wrote in the book is true. It's a memoir. His writing about his past unless taken directly from a diary that's only his thoughts and his observations may not be factual. It's what he remembers but what he remembers may not be truthful. As a candidate that in the past hated Trump for many years and called them out but now he has changed his tune and loves him. Smart? The man just told a bunch of people that eggs were more expensive than the price sign BEHIND him.
Tried to fix his Facebook Livestream by turning his camera upside down.
Yes. I can see the "smart" exuding from him.
Then again, the people who like this person and his running mate aren't noted for their plethora of intelligence.
Hillbilly rednecks, indeed.
And now he is the US VP candidate! Trump/Vance 2024❤❤❤❤❤
This is the difference between the book and the movie. Where is the one between the book and reality?
And now he’s vice-presidential candidate.
Expect views will go up.
It’s like today’s version of riding in cars with boys
I salute you, Mr VP Elect ! I read the book and saw the movie. JD is a rockstar. I won't be at all surprised if he is elected President when Trump's term is over. This is a movement, not a passing phase. God bless America. 🙏🕊
I’m sobbing 😭
The book was so good.
Wonder why the director and screen writers changed the autobiography- I’m guessing for dramatic effect?
I was JD except, I stayed. My family has prospered together because of it.
Or buy the book
Just bought the book!
When his grandma died they found 19 guns in her house
Cool!
So it's true he grew up on the public dole but now does not want to extend that courtesy to others, similar to Mitch Mcconnel
You're assuming that the book contains the true history.
yeah fr. i was looking for a fact vs fiction thing. not fiction vs fiction
I used to sell TEXAS Instruments in the 70's. And they were expensive. What year is this?. By 1990 the same calculator sold at one time 119.00 in the 70's was 2.99 at Kmart.
Love the part where JD called trump americas Hitler then becomes his vp pick anyway
Reading this book now. About half way. What a story and what an amazing man! I voted for Trump and got JD as a bonus!
How’d she become a nurse if she never went to college?
Some hospitals have training programs for nurses.
There are trade schools that have LVN programs... Sadly the BS RN seems to be fading away
Will JD's childhood make him more or less compassionate toward those on the bottom of the economic and social ladder today? Is it: "I know how you feel; let me help you." OR is it: "I had it a lot worse than you, so suck it up, buttercup!"
his entire political career has so far been trying to help not just the bottom rungs of the ladder, but the "forgotten" ones.
@@Kainis80 Both views can be true. Some people need help; others haven't done much to help themselves.
@@robertparsons313 hopefully compassion for whites only
I think the second one.
How could she wear roller blades in her medical job ? Blades are ice skates
they are inline wheels, so you ride them more like ice skates than roller skates.
it was a thing we called in-lines back in the 90s.
Roller blades are not ice skates, hence the name.
They were invented so that hockey players could practice skating year around. The wheels are all in one line. My kids all had them. They were invented in MN.
You never heard of RollerBlades??? 😂🤣😂
Boy o boy.....I'm so glad Trump picked Vance as his partner. I believe he knew most Americans could not relate to Trump's own privileged upbringing and life. He knew Vance would be far more relatable. Vance is a welcome and needed addition to the American political landscape. 😊
Vance is a product of Silicon Valley venture capitalist, went to Yale, giving 15 million to run for office, so relatable.🙄
That was the very famous actress, Glen Close.
Seems there are significant differences - but, all in all, having seen the movie and read the book - I can take on board the broad message and the goodwill of the book and am happy to accept.
And now trumps pick for VP dang if that’s not inspiring I don’t know what is
How can someone who struggled with poverty as a teenager and suffered due to not having proper government insurance for his mother, now that he should be a supporter of the people, is against proper social security and sufficient government health insurance for old men and old women.
Glenn Close is an icon!
JD Vance is the next Vice President of Trump 2024.
Very interesting.
i read this b4 i seen the movie its like harry potter i sat in a room no bigger then a bathroom
Thank you! Finally, a real person to help run our country. Yay for JD
Thank you. knew the story was tweaked for Fiction value. Always notice the 'Based on" never said True account
When Vance was young he couldn't afford eyeliner.
Probably stole it along with the pseudoephedrine.😂
JD wishes he looks like the actor.
Boy he still looks like a kiddi cat without a beard 😸
And now we know about the cat & the couch in his story about women in his family
How many other senators have movies made about them? Is this Predictive programming?
Remember, he wrote the book years ago. Ron Howard thought is was worthy of a screen play.
@@amanda1500 Trudeau is the son of Fidel Castro
Does the movie make clear Vance’s childhood and teen years were spent in suburban Ohio ? A fact he glosses over in the book. Mamaw and Papaw moved to Ohio
And now he’s the future VP of the US❤🇺🇸
I'm from the same area of the country, I too joined the military but stuck it out and expanded my thinking. He didn't and it shows on many levels. He's a national disgrace
Thank you.
I don’t understand your statement. What was it that he “didn’t”?
He spent 4 years in the Marine and went to Iraq. After 4 years he left the marines to get an undergraduate degree, went to Ohio State, one of the oldest Freshmen, graduated Summa Cum Laude. Then he applied to Yale law school without any assistance from anybody. He got to Yale all by himself. What is the disgrace in his record?
too much fake news it is tampon tim, drunk with power walz & his china style snitch line that is disgrace for a free nation! Ask those who served with walz what is disgrace they no like walz lying about rank, bailing before iraq, making up gun & combat zone serving thats a real disgrace if you value honesty in a leader. Watch a real man Vance who started from nothing expose the harris walz commie elite ticket tonight!
See that's what I hate about when they make about true stories but then they make up total bull crap... It should be as tight to the truth as possible
This seems to happen more often than not.. I worked for U.S.Airways b-4 bankruptcy protection . When The Miracle on the Hudson premier came out,I was excited . It wasn't as accurate as the movie but still pretty amazing.
That’s Hollywood.
Haven’t seen the film, but just hearing his story makes him so attractive to me. Boy, there’s NOTHING like family fighting for you.
Sadly, he’s actually kind of a piece of sh*t in real life.
Read the book , or listen to the audiobook at least!
and now he the republican vice presidential nominee!
It was a great movie! I highly recommend you watch the movie 🎥 very inspiring!!
I just watched his movie. Everyone should watch it, it will let you know more about our next Vice President. He will make an excellent Vice President. I’m for him 100%. God bless you JD.🙏🥇🌹
Now I added 1 + 1 = e !
I watched it with my daughter. It’s a great movie 😊
He is a such great great man!!
We are so proud of him ! He is a great leader of my nation! Like a our hero President Trump🎉
😂 good Lord! 🤦 Rednecks and lack of education everywhere.
Middletown is nowhere near Appalachia
They moved to Middletown from Apalachia because of how bad it got there.
JD Vacne's genes are strong. Not a trace of Usha's looks in those kids.
Good point.
Exactly can't see the Indian in Euan, and Vivek is named after VR
Good luck God's amongst us
From Aussie with love and respect
Certainly, Vance's childhood was tragic, but when he speaks highly of Kyle Rittenhouse as he did on Newsmax it seems that his grandmother's rescue of him was in vain.
This guy did not even look like JD Vance he had brown eyes match the part whatsoever I don't know who picked the actors out but they didn't pick the right ones the mother didn't look like the mother and the guy didn't look like JD Vance at least they could have put a guy with blue eyes Vance has some pretty blue eyes
Grandma sure looked like the real grandma though!
@@tessmoore3762She sure did!
If only it wasn't about JD Vance....
The actors are great.
Soon to be our next vice president. What a life.
Most likely to become VP.
From rags to riches….what a success true story! 🇺🇸 ❤
He's only rich because a Billionaire gave him 15 million to run for office.
OK, now I see why J.D. Vance currently sports a beard. Without it he looks quite young.
I think it’s because he has a chubby face that the beard disguises.😮
Is it history or JD Vance’s version of his life? We all remember our lives through our own lens. It may not be fact.
Leave our future president alone
As always the book was better than the film.
Vance was raised in a comfortable suburb in Ohio.
He spent summers in Kentucky.
He is just a Poverty Tourist?
Exactly!
This is about the cultural factors that permeate failure and success and how these are definitely NOT a matter of color, but historical and complex. The Marxist oppressor vs oppressed ideology is evil-first & foremost because it is utterly committed to lying for power, using "identity."
Try being a lifelong member of the poverty club.its so fun.
Isn’t Dave Chappel from the same area?
Why did he sell out? Probably because of an inferiority complex from growing up poor. Sorry it's not an excuse
Charles Murray and Richard Haier are expert academics on IQ. IQ is inherited and cannot be increased by any known method or learning program.
IQ is no different to other inherited human gifts, example sporting ability, eye-sight etc etc. It serves no purpose to promote specific inherited gifts. A sound philosophy is to teach that the QUANTITY of lemons inherited is one advantage but the most important thing in life is the QUALITY of the lemonade made from those lemons. QUALITY lemonade manufacture is not inherited and in that regard everyone is EQUAL.
" Trump is America's Hitler" - JD Vance.😂
Exactly
He like millions fells for lies of media until seeing the success of what a real leader looks like! with Trump we had Safe border, low food low gas, real jobs, no new wars, donating his presidential salary to the american people, helping fund black colleges, giving military the biggest pay raise, getting vets the medical care choice they finally deserve, protecting religious freedoms! Thankful Vance who was born into poverty worked hard for american dream served in combat admits the truth that he was wrong and respects president Trump!
Weird vs Hollywood
In the USA any thing is possible.
They could make a movie about my life,,,,,,,,BUT!, I grew up much poorer than JD, and I had no ambition, my ambition was beaten out of me by my six older brothers, ):
There are always ppl who have it worse....always. Even worse than you. That's not the point of this movie though.
@@Justme0288 Thank you but I don't need your opinion or your poor advice. (: have a good day.
@@NCLUSA I dont really care what you think you need, I think you do. Bc you had to put out a fact that you had it worse. Poor you. That sucks. Your parents should never. I had a bad situation too. But someone always has it worse. The point of the movie is put a focus on ALLLL poor, struggling, "hillbilly" like America. It is a big portion of this country ppl who have it bad and ppl who have it worse, like you. You are the one that had to go and make poor me pity me statement. So peace out.
