  • 🎸 Elevate your guitar skills with exclusive guitar lessons & tips at JustinJohnsonGu... Whether you're picking up a guitar for the first time or looking to master advanced techniques, I'll share with you everything I've learned in my guitar journey 🎸
I recently got a request for "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas, so I had to take a crack at arranging this one for solo guitar. The intro and main vocal lines are pretty straightforward, but once I starting diving into the violin solo, things started getting more interesting! I've always loved how the tasteful layering of the violin melody adds just the perfect amount of complexity to such a simple and elegant song. The tricky part is playing the violin melody while holding the bass note of the chords... this has now ended up becoming one of my favorite practice riffs to strengthen my fretting pinky! Try it a few times, and you'll see what I mean!

Great Justin, really awesome arrangement! Tabs is what I have been waiting for., get stuck in some places. Can’t see the right finger positions in your video. Thanks dude!

Thanks again for the tabs, that helps a lot. But I would be lost without the video 🤣 for some “customized chord finger positions” 😅. Question about your picking pattern: it is different from the original. Did that have practical reasons for the flow or is that your personal interpretation? I try the original pattern I have learned bevor and some issues with the flow. But I have to admit that I'm not the picking pro😅 The melody is in my head but the finger knot 🪢😂

On the day my father died, I was traveling across the state to see him in the hospital, when this song came on the radio. I knew he'd passed. And he had, I found out when I got there. That was in 1989. Now, every time I hear this song, I think of my father and all we did together. This rendition is no different, with bringing back great memories. Thank you. 🙏💜

"For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
    For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.
    As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer." Psalm 103, 11-16

The morning after my mom passed, I went to our favorite restaurant for breakfast. Our favorite table by the water was empty, waiting for us. At that moment this song came on the radio. Of course i was bawling.
When the song ended, I asked, "So what's it like up there, mom?" Strange Magic by ELO followed.
I love this version, Justin. Tears in my eyes as I type this.

Youll see her again kelly. One day when it gets close to your time, soon but not too soon...(far in the future ;).....you will see her at the door telling you its okay to pass thru. "Just take my hand and come, let me show you its okay, dont be scared"......
and then there will be no more goodbyes, only hello's.
      death is not the end.
      we are eternal.
      what a blessing.
Lost my mom too in september, she was 56. Love her very much.
But now I know that there will be somebody at the gate, waiting to welcome me so I dont have to go it alone.
      Dad too.
      Peace kelly

Some time ago, sometime during my 40's, I took guitar lessons mostly because my son was. This particular song, using tabs, proved to me that I would never learn to play the guitar...the usual way. Thanks for the work you put into playing this. Though I'm a failed guitarist, I do have some understanding of how much work it takes to put a song together and make it sound like music.

Great rendition of a classic 70’s Kansas song and one of my favorites back then.
Being an aspiring guitarist back then, I struggled with the finger-picking of the guitar part alone, until I had it wired. Then of course I had to sing the melody. Loved that song and so did anyone who heard me sing and play it. The violins were missing, the chorus was missing, but it was a campfire kind of song everyone sang along with. Some at a beach party would even hum the violin parts.
After over 40 years of playing in rock and blues bands, I’d never even thought about composing an entire song with just my guitar.
This relatively new “finger-style” guitar, playing an entire bands’s worth of sound is amazing and much harder than playing every part separately. One guitarist plays the guitar parts, the bass, the vocals, and even the violins. Anyone who knows this song or even if they don’t, hears the whole song done by one person on guitar.
    So well done, Justin.
I’m more of a fan of your dark slide blues and things like that, but you nailed this new popular finger style thing as well.
You’re incredibly good. Thanks for making me smile after a rough day at work.

Justin Johnson is a rare gem in the world of guitarists, an artist whose mastery of the instrument transcends genres and expectations. Known for his unique approach to blues, roots, and Americana, Johnson’s playing is a seamless blend of technical prowess and raw emotion, with an ability to make even the simplest melodies resonate deeply with his audience.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Justin Johnson’s artistry is his profound connection to the history of the guitar. His repertoire spans a variety of instruments, from the traditional six-string to cigar box guitars, resonators, lap steels, and even shovel guitars. Each of these instruments, in Johnson’s hands, becomes a vehicle for storytelling, evoking the rich heritage of American roots music. His dedication to preserving this heritage is not just about playing notes-it’s about channeling the spirit of the past into the present, creating a sound that is both timeless and fresh.
Johnson's technical ability is astounding. Whether fingerpicking intricate blues patterns or playing slide guitar with soul-stirring precision, he navigates the fretboard with an ease that speaks of countless hours of dedication. His playing is clean, yet full of character, never losing the emotional depth that makes blues music so captivating. He manages to combine complex techniques with a deep groove, creating music that is both intellectually stimulating and rhythmically compelling.
However, what truly sets Justin Johnson apart is his ability to evoke emotion. Listening to his music feels like an intimate conversation, one where every note carries meaning. His phrasing is impeccable-sometimes delicate and subtle, other times bold and fiery, always perfectly suited to the mood of the piece. His performances aren’t just about showing off technical skill; they are about creating an emotional experience for the listener. Whether he's playing a haunting Delta blues melody or an upbeat country-inspired tune, Johnson’s passion is palpable.
His versatility is another defining feature. While Johnson is often categorized as a blues guitarist, his music is a fusion of various genres, including rock, folk, jazz, and even classical influences. This genre-blending allows him to create a sound that feels familiar yet innovative, drawing in listeners from all musical backgrounds. His ability to move effortlessly between different styles is a testament to his deep understanding of music and his fearless approach to composition.
Beyond his impressive musicianship, Justin Johnson is also a passionate educator. Through his online tutorials and workshops, he shares his knowledge and techniques with a global audience, making his style accessible to players of all levels. His teaching is characterized by the same generosity and warmth that defines his performances, making him not only a gifted player but also a mentor to aspiring musicians.
Justin Johnson is a guitarist whose talent, versatility, and deep connection to the roots of American music make him one of the most compelling musicians of his generation. His ability to blend tradition with innovation, coupled with his emotional expressiveness, ensures that his music resonates with a wide audience. Whether performing live or recording in the studio, Johnson consistently delivers performances that are as technically impressive as they are soulfully moving. He is not just a master of the guitar; he is a true artist, capable of transforming simple strings and wood into a medium for profound expression. www.candiano.com

A splendid playing of this absolute masterpiece... the original Kansas version has Rich Williams & Kerry Livgren intertwining on acoustic guitar... along with Robby Steinhardt on his violin 🎻 and Steve Walsh 🎙️... (Phil Ehart played soft percussion 🪇... only Dave Hope (Bass) sat it out...)

👁️✨👁️ aloha Justin Nikki 'n crew Bravo, never an ease song A beautiful cover. The song's place within my memory ..... Kansas wrote the most accurate lyrics ever about feeling hopelessly worthless. It inspired a suicide, his requested cremation & on a Mtn summit his ... Dust in the Wind.

    I close my eyes
Only for a moment, and the moment's gone
    All my dreams
Pass before my eyes, a curiosity
    Dust in the wind
All they are is dust in the wind
    Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
    All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
    Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
    Now don't hang on
Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
    It slips away
And all your money won't another minute buy
    Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind
(All we are is dust in the wind)
    Dust in the wind
(Everything is dust in the wind)
Everything is dust in the wind
    (In the wind)

Not sure what happened there. Somehow it all got deleted except one word?!?! Anyway, nice version. I wasn't going to listen to this because I never liked this song. As usual you never cease to amaze. Your finger pick'n is great. Sounds like multiple instruments sometimes.

We are not even dust. Actually, we are quantum fields cavorting in a void, and made to exist by vitrue of an unfathomable consciousness. I my pray that you are in harmony with that spirit, my brother. Shalom/gw

Haha, definitely not a favorite song of mine, for no good reason all, I think it's the vocals, because I saw this pop up and just had to click on it.
Well, I listen to all of JJ's stuff anyhow.
This is *SO MUCH* better than the original! Love it!

I play this with a A minor. G. And a C major. And finger pick it. It s not the exact way that its played on the album but every body seems to really like it. When I play it,,, I use a lot of. Hamering to. To get that sound. But it really. Does well when you sing along with it. ,,
