I met Rudy Sarzo when he played with Dio in Copenhagen in 2008. I asked him, "You've played with all the greats; Randy Rhoads, Tony MacAlpine, Carlos Cavazo, Viv Campbell, Adrian Vandenberg, Craig Goldy, Doug Aldrich, Yngwie Malmsteen. Who was your favorite guitarist to perform with?"
He answered immediately, "Randy Rhoads. Definitely Randy Rhoads. With Randy, it was all about the music. The music was first. Everything else; the fame, the money, the women... that all came after. Randy was a musician's musician."
I pressed, "What was it like playing for Yngwie Malmsteen?"
He shook his head and laughed, "We don't talk about Yngwie Malmsteen."
😆😅🤣, Like that Movie my Daughter watched, Encanto, "We Don't talk about Yngwie" 😂🤣😅😆
I worked with a producer who had worked with G N R, Metallica, Korn, Jeff Beck and the list goes on. Lot's of big egos and intense people, but the only person he truly didn't like at all was Yngwie. Said he was a complete prick 24 7.
Rudy bought my parents house in 88 or so when we moved from Ca back to Indiana. When Whitesnake came thru Indianapolis he called me and asked if I'd like tickets and backstage passes. He knew I was interested in music and wanted to be supportive of that. He was so nice and generous and genuine that it was truly amazing. So I got to go for free and have amazing seats and then be among the first people to be allowed backstage afterwards, to meet the band. Thank you, Rudy! I'll always remember your generosity!!!! I love your vids Rick! Thank you for putting the work in and making such high-quality stuff. Do a vid on chamber-jazz?
Rudy's always been a class act.
He supports animal rescue groups, too! It's so nice to see a successful, famous muso who is down-to-earth!
Wow... I live in south bend
Right on. : D
Rudy is a class act! You can hear the respect and love for Randy when he talks about him.
Rudy is one of my favorite musicians. Such a great guy who found a way to make a living doing what he loves.
He was part of the best lineup Ozzy's ever had : )
Rudy is a class act. He also was a pall bearer at Dolores Rhoads funeral. I’m happy to know him.
Randy Rhoads forever
Yup!
..with Bob Daisley & Lee Kerslake! - The Blizzard Of Ozz Band
Rudy is one of the best! Really humble, knowledgeable, tons of great stories.
Thanks Rick!
Rudy is awesome. It's always exciting when legendary musicians share their experiences with us fans.
nice hat
I have met Rudy. He's a great player, onstage presence, he's excellent. When I did meet him, it was when the Metal health lineup did their reunion tour. They all signed my Randy Rhoads book. When I talked to Rudy, I just said- I'm glad you're back in the band. He just gave me the big Rudy grin, and that was good enough. Rudy is a great player, and I have read his book quite a few times. He's a great, strong player.
Randy was such a genius. I love hearing more stories about him... they never fail to reinforce how much respect I have for him.
One of the coolest interviews of any rock star I've seen. What a gracious intelligent cat. If he wasn't being interviewed by someone who gets it we wouldn't have been able to see inside his head like this.
Wow! Rudy is cool as heck. He is 2-3 yrs older than me but we got to America the same way, by way of Cuba 🇨🇺... I was put up for adoption by Cuban mom and Irish dad, they also were escaping the Cuban Government. I was born late October in 1964. It shows up in my guitar playing, especially fingerpicking. It goes all Latin sometimes by accident! The Irish shows up in my fiddle playing. I know this is several years too late but thank you for making this video Mr. Rick!
Rudy in every interview is the nicest guy in the world. Very knowledgeable of music, very heartfelt about his journey and just an all around nice guy. I would love the chance to play drums with his monster bass playing.
Recently watched some live Whitesnake with Rudy. You can hear his right hand articulation on the top end.
Nice and tight and groovin.
Rudy Sarzo is a great bassist and a nice person full of knowledge as well.
Rudy is great. We could all learn from his attitude and approach to life and music.
I met Rudy's brother, Robert, on September 1,1987 at the Paradise Theatre in Boston, MA, when his band Hurricane was opening for Gary Moore. He, and the other band members, were some of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. We spoke about Rudy, Carlos Cavazo, his brother Tony played bass in Hurricane. Robert showed me some cool classical guitar stuff and we discussed gear, family and funny stuff that happens on the road. It was an incredible night, I got to meet Gary Moore and his band as well. Such awesome memories.
I’m shocked there are only 102 comments! Rudy is a LEGEND! This interview was amazing!
Another incredible interview. Can't believe I am in the same classroom learning with Rudy Sarzo. You are too!
Rudy is my Bass hero. #1 in my book, especially because I met him, more than once, and now play bass guitar at age 54.
Just fantastic. So inspiring to hear musicians who are still driven yet humble.
Rudy rocks!
I've always loved Rudy! He just emits authentic positive energy, and certainly seems like one of the nicest guys in music!
I fucking love this man. Rudy seems like such a nice guy! Lol
Rudy Sarzo is a legendary hard rock/heavy metal bass player! Just to put you guys in context he's almost as legendary as his bass lines...
Such a cool interview ! I loved Rudy in Whitesnake !
I saw Rudy with Ozzy in 1980 at the Orpheum in Boston with Randy. I was the oldest guy in there at the time at 29. I felt so out of place, but I grew up on Sabbath and was loyal to Ozzy in some weird way and had to see how he was surviving after Sabbath. Rudy had a great sound and I loved how he struck a lot of his notes on the upbeat instead of the downbeat. Ozzy was sloshed on stage and still drinking. They almost had to carry him off the stage at the end. I couldn't hear for a couple days after that concert. Randy did a 20m guitar solo that was screeching loud. I think I lost a few cilia in my inner ear that night, but fuck it, it was all worth it. That was the last time I ever saw Ozzy again. Thank you Rick for having Rudy on, really enjoyed how Rudy still has a passion for learning. That is key to keeping your mind sharp when you get our age. Chhers, Rick. Love ya.
Rudy is one classy person. You too gel perfectly. Thanks again Rick for bringing on one of my bass hero’s. Viva La Sarzo.
Only 18K views...what a beautiful secret here.
3 years ago? how did I not come across this sooner? Really great interview!
Saw him with Quiet Riot in concert in 83, and he had the most charisma in the band. So when I saw him in White Snake I was paying attention to him again as the cool one.
What an absolute GEM of An Interview!...Way to go Rick...Rudy is one of my all-time favs and he didn't disappoint...Awesome Guy...the stories and knowledge are priceless! I can't believe I missed this on your site...But really glad it just happened to pop up in my feed!
Great to hear from a legend like Rudy , too bad Randy is not around anymore ! RIP Eddie . Kevin !
Great interview. Rudy's enthusiasm really comes through and you seem to really enjoy it, too. Thanks!
I'm not a big fan of the type of music Rudy plays but I really like his playing. Now, I know why there is this kind of distinction after listening to this interview. He's got a lot of musical intellectual curiosity, and it's now not surprising that when I hear him play he sounds like someone that doesn't need to be anchored to hard rock or metal or whatever genre he is known for. He's a super intelligent guy.
Great to see Rudy he brings back so many memories. It's good for the youngsters to hear the truth about doors open doors closed in regard to trust.
I love Rudy he is a really nice guy down to earth amazing performer bassist. Read his book!!!
What a great connection and respect between Rick and Rudy here. Great interview.
UA-cam hiding the good stuff again...ugghhh..This is phenomenal, Rudy is a great player/person ...a great interview this was!
Rik Emmett called Randy, Rudy and Tommy Aldridge the best live band that he's ever seen.
That's quite a compliment!
Rudy rules, such a genuine soul
RICK, PLEASE DO A RANDY RHOADS VIDEO!!!! I don’t know would be killer!
This has to be your most under-viewed video. Great conversation covering so much. I love that he’s a fan too!
This was great! Rudy is too cool for school.
Rudy is the real deal. Cool to hear him mention Will Lee!!
Great conversation. I've heard of Rudy from decades ago. You really didn't hear a lot about bassists. Like he said, it was all about a big name guitar player. When you heard that Rudy was in a band, you knew it was a serious heavy metal rock band. So much energy and full of life. Learned a lot. Thank you both for your time. I going to search for more Rudy right now and then back to Everything Music!!!! I'm learning from the same guy as RUDY SARZO🤣 I LOVE IT
The names of players Rudy is dropping shows that he is a true student of his instrument and music and is truly well rounded and listens to a variety of music, not just metal and rock. I like this guy
Hi Rick, I think you should start a new video series based upon what you did about Chris Cornell and Soundgarden (sad circumstance aside, naturally). I mean a series when you get to discuss in depth a certain band or artist, analyzing the music, the composition, and maybe throw in some anedocte here and there. It would be awesome. It's a pleasure to hear your analysis and get to know an artist through the lenses of a guy like you.
Rudy is such a great guy.
This was such an excellent interview! I really enjoyed it . I’ve read Rudy’s book Off The Rails and he’s truly one of rock n rolls greatest .
Amazing 👏
Hey Rick, talking about the coexistence of fusion and rock in the 70s brought up an idea: try to get Jeff Beck on! That would be phenomenal (by the way, great episode as always, thanks so much for doing these!)
Rick, you just are amazing - another incredible interview with a true giant in hard rock/metal. Rudy Sarzo was and is a monster player and musician - so great to get a chance to hear him speak extensively in your channel's format.
Incredible, Rick and THANKS AGAIN! Absolutely can't wait for Satch... ;) :D
Fantastic interview. lots of great information! RR forever!
Great interview. Rudy is so real it's unreal and I love my TC too!
A pleasure to watch. Thanks Rudy for speaking about Randy. I hung on every word. When I started guitar in 86, it was, and remains, RR. Rick Beato comes along and expands or defines these Diary style imaginations. Thanks Rick, completionism rules. You're ate up, in a good way. Double thanks. This is a uniquely good video. Just wow, really. -Jim
as of today ...THIS PIECE OF VIDEO has to be the most interesting ive seen in my 10 yrs of youtubing. And Rudy is sooo correct about watching you Rick. You are amazing and passionate about your work, music, and message that you deliver so naturally. Rock on 🤘🤠🤘
That was a great interview.I also agree with Rudy being on the road since I was 8 years old traveling with a show business parents all over the world none stop for 50 years.I have so much of the same experiences with Rudy living, working in Miami in the early 60's,then moving to L.A. in the 70's....Rick watching you videos really is a blessing .It's nice that you have such of a variety of motifs in your lessons...
Thank you for sharing this interview.
Rudy was one of my first influence's when it came to bass. I got a huge kick about how he became a bass player because of that's what THEY needed! Can so relate to that! lol So glad you did Rudy! Still have the Peavey mag "Monitor" issue with him back in the "80"s. My first pro bass I had was a Peavey T-40. Man do I wish I still had that heavy MFer but there are a few basses I wish I still had and some I didn't!
Great interview Rick! Always look forward to your new vids and catching up on some of your older ones. Always good stuff!
He looks great for 70, wow.
Randy would have loved Rick Beato
This video is so underrated
Great interview and testimonials to both music geniuses! This series is awesome!
What a great interview 👍
Wow, what a great interview!
Thanks so much for all your hard work Rick... rock on....
Another great interview, very cool that Rudy is a big fan of you!
Ahh yes I cant get enough of randy rhoads. He was such a genius
Totally agree with Rudy, Rick. You're a great teacher! Thanks for the amazing content
Great interview. It's cool to hear that even legends watch and learn from your channel.
your videos are amazing. thank you!
This interview was Great. Thx Rick.
Used to see Rudy back at the Starwood in 79!
I was lucky to see Rudy play with Blue Oyster Cult! Another great interview!!
Rick, What a Great interview. Rudy has played in all the bands I grew up with. What a wonderful guy..
I had occasion to open for Operation: Mindcrime, Geoff Tate's solo band when Rudy was banging with them. He came out of the bus as we were hanging around outside after soundcheck and hung out with us for a bit. He was absolutely nowhere near the "internationally famous rock star". He never made us feel that he thought he was better than us.
In an industry of too many "rock stars" and too few musicians, Rudy was a refreshing change.
Great interview sir! thank you!
Rick, I´m big fan from Brazil. I searched for, but could not find one of you talking about Randy Rhoades. It would be really cool if you make one. Best regards!
Wow! Such a great interview.
Lovely interview, Rick. Thank you.
what an awesome interview!!!how did i miss this for so long awesome job Rick..
This was great! Love the channel and this series. Such great stories from Rudy. And, Randy was one of my guitar heroes that made me want to learn how to play the guitar.
Excellent, interview.
His bass playing on “Speak Of The Devil” is absolutely outstanding!
What an awesome dude
That was a really cool interview/ conversation. The topics bring back memories of better days. Take care, both of you and keep up the good work.
That was one of the coolest videos i have seen! Rudy has always been an inspiration to me ever since i heard and saw him for the first time!! I will always admire who he is and what he does! Thank you so very much for that video!! My day is made!!
great bass playerm ive never seen a musician with better time, alot of musicians have almost metronomic time
but rudys time is a actually shockingly metronomic
Wow, I recently finished Rudy's book Off The Rails and wasn't expecting to learn anything new here, but what a great, illuminating chat! Thoroughly enjoyed this (and all your vids).
Such a great guy.
Rudy is a class act, good dude.
Can totally relate with Rudy talking about being on standby with his musical learning pursuit. Thanks Rick for re-igniting a new passion and excitement about music!
love you both..!! I echo Rudy that Rick's site is good as an ALL AROUND musical touchstone.
Hey Rudy .. good friend indeed! Thanks Rick , interesting show my friend!
Great interview Rick! You mentioned once that you had done work with Trey Anastasio. Do you think there is a chance of maybe getting him on the show sometime in the future? I was a huge Phish fan back in the old days and it would really be interesting to here how he approached composing some of the early composed pieces that Phish played.
Wait a minute--- he said something about Ed Sullivan and I just went and looked up his age. There is no way that man is 69 years old. Rudy, dude, you look fabulous! I was lucky to see you tour with Whitesnake back in the day.
Great interview!
