I have lived in Indonesia, Yogyakarta specifically, for 10 years so when I heard "Sate Lilit" as meatballs I was like "Huh???" but then I stopped for a moment and realized that they are practically meatballs, lol.
As an Indonesia, I needed a few seconds for seeing sate lilit as a meatball. Because we have baso (meatball soup) dishes that still has the 'ball' shape. And sate lilit, for me, is a variant of sate (skewers)...
Indeed! I was surprised that it included as meat ball instead of sate, but if I think of it, it does fill the criteria of meat ball. The dish is meat balls cooked as sate 😂
Yeah, when you say meatball you will imagine bakso rather then sate lilit. We indonesian see sate lilit more like satay, but it was meatball indeed,
but its need to be grilled over charcoal as satay
When I made sate lillit for the first time I could not find the lemongrass handy or the flat skewers we had eaten them on so I simply made them as patties. They still tasted delicious even though they were not traditional. They are one of my favourite Indonesian dishes and I always look out for them when we go to Bali.
bakso popular in indo, but originally from china, sate lilit like meatballs made from ground meat, ball-shaped but with a skewer originally from indo
I got bamboozled when I saw sate lilit was categorized as meatball awkkwk. It felt wrong but also technically right.
that sate looked beautifulllll
Oooo, the Youvarlakia, I think I will experiment a bit to also put some rice to my bakso wkwkw. And that egg and lemon, I can already taste the creamy sour sauce, gotta love it.
As an Indonesian, i kinda needed to process when they call Sate Lilit as Meatballs.
It's because Indonesia has its own meatballs with broth soup. That's why.
Sate lebih ke daging potong, kalau sudah dicincang bisa juga dibilang 'meatball' sih. Bakso pun dari daging cincang/giling kan..
@@Nakkayoshii because they have more connections and story with this dish , instead with more of the obvious dish. The series is not only about food but also their story and connection to it. It is weird if they pick something that they less fond of even tho it’s more sense fitting into the theme
Indonesian food is the next frontier of food to get popular in America I’m calling it now. Americans know: Japanese, Chinese, Viet, Thai, and Indian. But they are absolutely not ready for absolutely addicting and mesmerizing Indonesian food is.
Because there is no large Indonesian community migrating to the United States
Perhaps because Indonesian food requires lots of spices not readily available in the US. Worse, Indonesian diaspora is not that big compared to Filipino or Vietnamese diaspora. But at least Indonesian tempeh is already famous in the west.
Some website declared beef rendang as the best dish in the world and there is an Indonesian food hall that opened up here in Manhattan. I think it’s time is coming
@@avibarr2751 Fast food restaurant?
@@DeniSaputta I bring it there! It's kind of hard to get the spices and they're pretty expensive too. Had to import some of them, and my friends tried some Indonesian dishes I made, they loved it, and they say it was one of the most flavorful dishes they ever had. Even I had to buy some spice from a local witchcraft shop where they sell herbs thats pretty rare to find in the grocery store. It is just pretty underrated because not a lot of people are exposed to it like any other International dish, but I do think that time will come. Also there aren't many Indonesians in the US, they are so rare compare to other minorities/immigrants, like Philippines and India, etc. I believe that will be hands down one of their favorites once they get introduced to it, like any other cuisine. But you can still find some spots where they open Indonesian restaurants. Some are really good, feel nostalgic.
I don’t even mind that _sate lilit_ is categorized as a “meatball” dish although Indonesia has other kinds of meatballs that actually look like meat balls, but I wish you’d sourced the recipe from Indonesians instead of some foreigners who’ve lived in Bali.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they shared their memories, but locals wouldn’t have you fry sate lilit or use lemongrass stalks as skewers. Sure, there are fried versions and some that use lemongrass, but those are more for fancy cafes. The traditional sate lilit you find at warungs all over Bali uses bamboo or wooden sticks and are always grilled over charcoals. Thanks for featuring Indonesian food; I just wish it was more authentic.
Yes - this needs to be shown!
Also, there are plenty of Balinese in the LA area. (Also in New York - and Colorado, believe it or not!) I personally know quite a few of them.
@@SiKedek Yeah, we need to let the world know. Imagine showing up to a Balinese “ngayah” event, asking the guys making sate lilit if they’re going to use lemongrass sticks and fry the skewers! 😂 Cafe-style sate lilit is a whole different world from the real, everyday version.
@@KilanEatsandDrinks You'd be laughed out of the event - and then you'd be mentioned by either the bondresan in the topeng masked play or the dalang himself in a wayang shadow play!
This! I hate to be that person but white people vacationing in Indonesia because they don't have enough money to pay rent in LA isn't exactly Indonesian
As Indonesian is not quite like Indonesian Meatball that we know... Indonesian Meatball is Soupy Kind of Dish... ^^. is more like Satay in Indonesia...
I thought the Indonesian meatball is bakso, but sate lilit is actually closer to the meatball in western world. 😮
indonesians never consider sate lilit as meatball.. well maybe indonesians and amerincans are different in definition about meatball
OMG! Using the bench scraper under the grater! Genius!
The dog waiting so patiently is the star of the episode! Interesting meatballs to try, that I haven't heard of either before.
Never thought of Sate Lilit as a type of meatball, but it is indeed!
Both of these home cooks are very talented and did right by these recipes! What a lovely series 🙂
i have been indonesian for 32 years yet i just realize that sate lilit is also considered meatball 😯😯😯
nope. thats not a meatball. you can ask any indonesian ppl. ask them is sate lilit considered as meatball? they will laugh a lot. is frickin sate tho
@@goldenboy6667I know Indonesian (including me. I'm also Balinese) dont typically consider sate lilit as meatball, but if you look at sate lilit ingredient and its shape, it's technically meatball 😅
Just different perspective imo, for Indonesian bakso is meatball but the thing is bakso is just variant type of food from meatball because if you think of sate lilit's ingredients I think it's fair to call it meatball, just another different type/shape of meatball
Although technically made out of ground beef. Sate lilit is not a meatball dish. It's a satay or skewer dish. It more resemble a kebab than a meatball. Just as meat loaf and burger is not a meatball dish although they are made out of ground beef.
Sate Lillit and Youvarlakia …. Two of my faves. One I grew up with and is my comfort soup and the other I discovered travelling to Bali. I loved how they made the avgolemono by whipping the egg whites separate to the yolks. Often I am lazy and just mix the lot in my milkshake maker😊. I also loved seeing the sate lillit being deep fried as I grill them like patties and will need to give this a try. Now I want to go make them.
one of the cooking videos that many Indonesians will question it
I lived in Greece for 5 years in the 90s - and as an Indonesian - I would definitely just say one should not compare. Greek food is divine in its own pedestal and Indonesian food is my homecountry food. BOTH great!
It's not difficult to find Indonesian food in America, there are lots of Indonesian food trucks in America, but the biggest Indonesian food diaspora is in the Netherlands. Almost every region of the Netherlands has Indonesian food sellers, even in the Netherlands there is a place selling super local Indonesian food which is very popular called "warung Indonesia"
"Hey sausage..how are you?"
'Dont call me sausage..call me meatball now"
😂😂😂😂😂
Sate lilit is a sate or satay. i do understand why you think sate lilit as meatball because we use minced meat as main ingredient but, we Indonesian never consider it as one. if we are talking about meatball then Indonesian usually talking about Bakso and all of its variants..so it usually start with bakso then something..like Bakso Sapi, Bakso Rudal, Bakso Ikan, Bakso Udang, Bakso Babat, Bakso Ayam etc.
That’s what I thought too, but you have to remember the siblings probably never tried those, except sate lilit. Also, the siblings are not Indonesian.
@@AndrewIndoChannel google it
Yes. But a lot of people from different culture than Indonesian (I'm Indonesian btw) would think of 'meatball' like Swedish meatball of some sort, when meatball is kinda the 'ball' version of meatloaf and served with some kind of sauce or dipping. Swedish meatball (kötbullar), kofta, American version of meatball (the one w/ tomato sauce) are the example of this.
Bakso has bouncy and chewy texture and really different from meatball dishes I mention before. And bakso typically served in soup form. If you look at sate lilit, they (sate lilit) is much more similar to what a lot of people (aside from Indonesian ofc) think of what 'meatball' is.
@@SteamDumpling2738 That is true. Our perspectives of what meatball is are different.
We had meatballs containing rice when I was growing up. They were called 'porcupine meatballs'.
I used to make them all the time! Unfortunatley one time taking them out of the oven I gave myself 2nd-degree burns and haven't been able to bring myself to eat them since :(
Yes! Porcupine meatballs! A way to stretch the meat, but also so cute, as the rice puffs out of the meatballs so they kind of look like porcupines
Funfact, Indonesia more having a kind of meatballs which on list the most delicious meatball (bakso) in the world.. from tasteatlas.
No.14 bakso goreng
No.19 bakso
No.28 bakso solo
And sate lilit its not included in kind of meatball 🤔
Love Saline and Tara’s story!
I was watching till finish without sound, waiting for indonesian meatball to show up and thought the sate lilit was an extra feature, till i read the comment... haha
I ran a greek restaurant for years. Keftedes flattened out make amazing burgers.
Love how you considered satay (skewers) as a meatball
When Indonesian meatball in title but you see sate lilit, I was just ‘huh?’. What the? Why not bakso?’ This kinda challenge my view on meatball lol😂 but for me sate lilit is just satay lol and everyone in comments already calling out. Where is the famous bakso 😂
rice interestingly does actually pop up in a ground meat context in American food, via porcupine meatballs
They were a great depression staple in order to stretch meat out further. Not sure if they have any influence from say Greek or other cuisines, but they could have theoretically since that is the normal way of American food
Sate lilit made from fish, wrapped around bamboo stick, and then grilled over charcoal
The poison in candlenut is neutralised with cooking. The good replacement for candlenut is macadamia nuts. Do not recommend candlenut raw😅
This series is so comforting 🥹
They should make Bakso.
Sate Lilit is from Bali only.
Such a great series.
ayo i expect IKEA's meatball vs bakso solo (classic indonesian meatballs)😂
I LOVE Greek meatballs!! It is my favorite meal when I eat out at a Greek restaurant!
Meatball = Indonesia name is BAKSO 🇮🇩
I absolutely LOVED this episode ❤
Great episode! Thanks!
thankyouuuuuu ,looks good❤❤
Lions head meatball! Or 狮子头. LOVED getting this from reataurants and my parents making this when i was young :) so comforting to eat
I don't know where you've got the information about Sate Lilit is "Meatballs."
As Indonesian I'm worrying that this video might mislead people in some point😊
Sate = Satay = Meat Grilled = Skewer
Hope this helps ❤
I'm personally not afraid that this video is gonna mislead people. We, as Indonesian, have a very different perspective on what a 'meatball' is.
A lot of people from different culture consider meatball as meatloaf in 'ball' form. The example of these are kofta, kötbullar ('IKEA' meatball) or American version of meatball w/ tomato sauce. And for that matter, sate lilit resemble these dishes a lot rather than bakso. Bakso on the other hand is more like an example of 'soup' dishes and its texture is really bouncy (definitely not like 'meatball' that a lot of people think of)
You got indonesian meatballs mixed with sate lilit, but at least you tried
As far as I know, sate lilit is usually made from fish, not duck.
U call Indonesia soldier for this title
That's not meat balls, that's Skewers
Meat ball with lemon gras is "SATE LILIT"
For sate lilit, you can also fry it on a pan, that is if your pan has griddle bumps on it.
Originally it is not suppose to be too juicy, but for it's spice to kick in. And the skewer is best eaten with sambal and rice, or anything grainy.
"Indonesian and Greek meatball" and I saw sate... Ow ow ow ow hold up! 😂
malah jadi kayak sempol karna digoreng hahaha... Satay must be grilled I believe. If you fry it, it becomes another food instead
Yassss, the fact that you are using your bare hands really indicate that you are Indonesian.
Itu Sate Lilit, bukan Bakso. Saran saja, sebaiknya research informasi terlebih dulu agar ga salah persepsi. Thanks
Great episode! I’m gonna try both of these recipes. 🥰
Sate Lilit is considered as skewers though it's made out of minced meat. Thanks.
Instead making Lilit Satay
Just make Meatball soup call it Bakso
Kan pemahaman mereka yg namanya 'meatball' itu daging giling yg dibentuk. Jadi selain bakso, sate lilit termasuk meatball jg karena daging giling yg dibentuk bulat lonjong di daun sereh. Sate di pikiran mereka daging yg dipotong dadu terus ditusuk di tusuk sate
Fantastic show! Love it
In Indonesia, sate lilit is not categorized as meat ball😢 it's skewers.. You should present Bakso as a meat ball dish
Love this series..
Indeed comfort food ❤
but sate lilit is a skewer meat, meatball in indonesia usualy named bakso
the closest thing to western meatball is actually perkedel daging, semur stew coated beef meatball you guys should try it
Sate lilit is Categorized as SATE not MEATBALL..
Makes a video about meatballs, proceeds to make satay instead
Loved this!!! Thank you. Does everybody in America have a dog????
Aw they were both adorable 🐶🐾
Plently of people don’t have dogs.
As an Indonesian "SATE LILIT IS NOT MEATBALL!"
Is not even round ffs
RED BOAT FISH SAUCE... MY FAVORITE !!!
Sate/satay in english mean skeawer
love how they had so much skyline an gold star in there cabin lol!
Selamat menikmati kuliner Indonesians food it also bakso
Sate lilit is not meatball.. meatball is a soup dish
how could you mistake sate lilit for meatballs 😭
Huh? sate lilit is meatball?? it's literally called satay....
I'm Indonesian. NEVER in my life I've seen someone make a meatball with DUCK. Also, kinda weird to classify sate lilit as meatball 😂
Fried sate lilit is a thing that I've never thought of too...
12:10 Cheers! To the wooden spoon girlies!!! Me, too🤗🤗🤗💋
that's not Indonesian meat ball, that sate lilit(skewer). please make better version with some research. i think its not harm to actually do the research
Where is the meatBALL??
To think about it, sate lilit is indeed a meatball. And common Indonesia meatball is actually Chinese meatball.
Bro i was expecting bakso 😢
This isn't Indonesian meat ball that i know.. try "Bakso" (meatball with soup)
I have tasted any kind of meatballs, and I found it Indonesian meatball is the best.
We need uncle roger here
He is Malaysian, nothing to do with indonesian dish.
@@mrsdin3739 have you watched his channel?
As someone who’s born and raised in Bali, i was like 😒😵💫🥴 and then it got me like 🤔🫨 and the 🙂↕️
That's a skewer not a meatball
Sate = skewers, lilit = wrap. Idk how u conclude elips shaped wrapped meat are ball shaped 🏀 😭. I know sate lilit have same form as american football 🏈 . But it's not how Indonesian meatball should be defined 😭.
I know in Indonesia there is also cube shaped meatball/bakso. But sate lilit can't be categorised as meatbeall, because Balinese people look it as skewers.
Wow. You are a group of beautiful people, but please do a bit more research before making a recipe from another country. I have never seen a deep fried Sate Lilit, nor have I seen Indonesian refer to it as meatballs. This is a confusing video.
western media with their casual cultural appropriation
This is the most random match up i've ever seen 😂
not grilled = not sate ,and no lilit. no approved. its like cooking your greek meat ball in microwave how does it feel?
you can deep fried candle nut and eat it as snack. some said it's taste similar to hazelnut
Yes, but candle nut is extremely oily if you fry or grill them. And I find it not pleasant if you eat them like that 😅 In my culture (Balinese), you grill candlenut until it burnt and you cut and smear the candle nut on dried, already-carved coconut leaf. It acts like an ink 😀 This is a traditional way to write something. Usually back in the day when Indonesia hasn't even a country yet
@@SteamDumpling2738 i found it quite good taste but in small amount.
I'm about to comment about Sate Lilit considered as Meatball, but many Indonesians have tell everything in comment section 🤣
When u said meatballs i never thought that sate lilit as one because its a sate, but yeah i guess its kinda like meatballs
Indonesian ❤🇮🇩
Indonesiaaaa love it
Is this berly second UA-cam channel?
No, this is a tv program that PBS (Public Broadcasting Station) in USA posted on UA-cam. All episodes from the first three seasons are posted.
I’m curious about the duck minced meat, for the European followers here, where can I order this? I’ve never seen this in my home country of Belgium before 😧 but I love duck!
Or buy the duck meat & put it in the food processor to blitz it into the ground meat consistency.
Itu bukan meatball, sudah jelas nama makanannya sate , sate is satay ,, bukan meatball,, anda membuat budaya sendiri ?
Real bakso or common indonesian meatball are bit difficult to make so they made an easier version
Naah, bakso is very easy to make..it just minced meat with some spices,.they could buy some dry spices if they could not get their hands on fresh one.
Nah, they're lazy
TBH as a Malaysian I never understood the love of bakso in Indonesia. It is mostly flour and filler meat, in a clear soup. I believe there are better food in indonesia, maybe it is comfort food for indonesians. The same is for perkedel it does fufill criteria for meatballs if it is just potato.
Bakso has so many variants, not all vendors are the same,.if you have flour in your bakso it means you eat low quality ones. Higher quality bakso have very little use of flour,.they also add meats other than bakso in the soup.
Perkedel originaly dutch dish frikadele.
And yes, frikadele is meat (meatball)
Thats not indonesian meatball 😊 fyi ❤
I wanna say ‘where’s the rice?’ but I don’t eat em w rice either 😂
That ain't no Indonesian meatball 😂
Its not meatball, looks like skewer or kebab
