    As an Indonesia, I needed a few seconds for seeing sate lilit as a meatball. Because we have baso (meatball soup) dishes that still has the 'ball' shape. And sate lilit, for me, is a variant of sate (skewers)...

      When I made sate lillit for the first time I could not find the lemongrass handy or the flat skewers we had eaten them on so I simply made them as patties. They still tasted delicious even though they were not traditional. They are one of my favourite Indonesian dishes and I always look out for them when we go to Bali.

      @@DeniSaputta I bring it there! It's kind of hard to get the spices and they're pretty expensive too. Had to import some of them, and my friends tried some Indonesian dishes I made, they loved it, and they say it was one of the most flavorful dishes they ever had. Even I had to buy some spice from a local witchcraft shop where they sell herbs thats pretty rare to find in the grocery store. It is just pretty underrated because not a lot of people are exposed to it like any other International dish, but I do think that time will come. Also there aren't many Indonesians in the US, they are so rare compare to other minorities/immigrants, like Philippines and India, etc. I believe that will be hands down one of their favorites once they get introduced to it, like any other cuisine. But you can still find some spots where they open Indonesian restaurants. Some are really good, feel nostalgic.

    I don’t even mind that _sate lilit_ is categorized as a “meatball” dish although Indonesia has other kinds of meatballs that actually look like meat balls, but I wish you’d sourced the recipe from Indonesians instead of some foreigners who’ve lived in Bali.
    Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they shared their memories, but locals wouldn’t have you fry sate lilit or use lemongrass stalks as skewers. Sure, there are fried versions and some that use lemongrass, but those are more for fancy cafes. The traditional sate lilit you find at warungs all over Bali uses bamboo or wooden sticks and are always grilled over charcoals. Thanks for featuring Indonesian food; I just wish it was more authentic.

      Yes. But a lot of people from different culture than Indonesian (I'm Indonesian btw) would think of 'meatball' like Swedish meatball of some sort, when meatball is kinda the 'ball' version of meatloaf and served with some kind of sauce or dipping. Swedish meatball (kötbullar), kofta, American version of meatball (the one w/ tomato sauce) are the example of this.
      Bakso has bouncy and chewy texture and really different from meatball dishes I mention before. And bakso typically served in soup form. If you look at sate lilit, they (sate lilit) is much more similar to what a lot of people (aside from Indonesian ofc) think of what 'meatball' is.

      A lot of people from different culture consider meatball as meatloaf in 'ball' form. The example of these are kofta, kötbullar ('IKEA' meatball) or American version of meatball w/ tomato sauce. And for that matter, sate lilit resemble these dishes a lot rather than bakso. Bakso on the other hand is more like an example of 'soup' dishes and its texture is really bouncy (definitely not like 'meatball' that a lot of people think of)

    Fried sate lilit is a thing that I've never thought of too...

    To think about it, sate lilit is indeed a meatball. And common Indonesia meatball is actually Chinese meatball.

    Sate = skewers, lilit = wrap. Idk how u conclude elips shaped wrapped meat are ball shaped 🏀 😭. I know sate lilit have same form as american football 🏈 . But it's not how Indonesian meatball should be defined 😭.
    I know in Indonesia there is also cube shaped meatball/bakso. But sate lilit can't be categorised as meatbeall, because Balinese people look it as skewers.

    you can deep fried candle nut and eat it as snack. some said it's taste similar to hazelnut

    • @SteamDumpling2738
      @SteamDumpling2738 2 дні тому

      Yes, but candle nut is extremely oily if you fry or grill them. And I find it not pleasant if you eat them like that 😅 In my culture (Balinese), you grill candlenut until it burnt and you cut and smear the candle nut on dried, already-carved coconut leaf. It acts like an ink 😀 This is a traditional way to write something. Usually back in the day when Indonesia hasn't even a country yet

    TBH as a Malaysian I never understood the love of bakso in Indonesia. It is mostly flour and filler meat, in a clear soup. I believe there are better food in indonesia, maybe it is comfort food for indonesians. The same is for perkedel it does fufill criteria for meatballs if it is just potato.

    • @Shirokuma15
      @Shirokuma15 5 днів тому +2

      Bakso has so many variants, not all vendors are the same,.if you have flour in your bakso it means you eat low quality ones. Higher quality bakso have very little use of flour,.they also add meats other than bakso in the soup.
