I keep my fingers crossed you're Zygo decides to survive and thrive. I've killed a decent amount of Zygos before I tried out self watering with a Mixture of small Leca, Seramis and small grade Perlite (ratio about 2/4/2) and eversince they are doing great and grow almost like weeds. Keep us updated please! :)
I have to admit I am usually not very gentle either but was paying close attention as I have a Zygo hybrid and Zygonisium that will need to be repotted soon and did not want to put back in the bark/moss/perlite mix they are currently in. Looking forward to seeing the next update on this one
I too have killed a number of Zygos. I now grow one in self watering with a mixture of Leca and Seramis and it is actively growing roots for the first time.
Just curious what kind of climate you’re dealing with? I just got my first one, and will repot after it’s done blooming - I’m in the high desert of Colorado. Thank you!!
Good job on the repot. In about two weeks you'll know if the old root system is going to make it or crash, those white ones will either extend and branch or turn black and die. I would say they should, mostly, do just fine (it is practically impossible not to lose some) and the plant should carry on. You're going to break your curse this time I know it.
I'm beginning to think that rock-wool would be good for these as it never breaks down so no 're-potting' - just potting on into larger pots as the plant gets bigger.
Thanks for sharing your repot of the Zygo. I have one that’s got abloom spike on it. I will repot after it’s done blooming. I grow it in a south facing window, so it gets plenty of light. Best of luck with yours. And thanks for all the great tips on how they like to grow. I didn’t know that the roots were so delicate. 🤗🥀
Fingers crossed and the belief that you have cracked the culture code in growing Zygopetalum. I have learned a lot from this video but I know that it is too close to the oncidium and I don't do well with them. Looking forward to the updates on this orchid. Have a wonderful day.
Try putting them outside in the summer, I do here in Canada in a shady spot and they thrive. Your weather is similar, winters aside.... my zygo is currently pushing out 9 spikes ! Now dendrobiums are another matter , just haven't mastered them yet.
That was really informative thanks I grow mine in bark hanging from roof in greenhouse seeing that I might change but I'm a bit afraid to just in case it dies again thanks
Ahh, Zygo’s! My big one seemed to be doing so well (in bark and moss) - big new bulb earlier in the year, next new growth bloomed, but then matured undersized. Now another new growth is coming - not sure if it will bloom though...It’s quite a capricious plant! I need to repot it soon as the media is smelling a bit musty and I know some roots died but new ones have grown, so this is very timely. I don’t have coconut husk but might try it in tree fern fibre. Definitely nerve wracking to repot a Zygo - those brittle roots are a real pain! You did a good job - hopefully it will appreciate it’s new home and it being the last chance for its kind in your collection! Eagerly awaiting the updates!
Where do you get your coconut husk from Roger? I put in the search words Including for orchids but all the products seem to be for reptiles. Or is that OK? Fairly urgent enquiry as I just received a zygo with a rotting new growth…have complained to the company as I doubt I can save it but want to try. Many thanks in advance.
It's called Coconut Terrain made by Komodo and yes, it's primary use is for reptile bedding. It needs multiple soaks and rinses to get the salt out before use.
It should appreciate your concern and delicate touch by grow well and giving you a wonderful flower display in appreciation,
I hope so.
One of my favorite orchids. They do well in my climate. Good luck with your re-pot.
Thanks.

Thanks.
This one will be a success!!
I hope so.
I believe this is the first time I have seen you be this gentle with a repot. 🥰
I was warned - the roots break easy and then fail not long after being repotted.

Good job and good luck
Thanks.
Nice gentle repot Roger, and best of luck with this one! Mine always find a way to die with perfectly beautiful roots and rotting new growths.

I have kept my Zygo in mostly sphagnum and a bit of small-medium sized bark. They’ve been doing well since having them

@@JLB0880 I live in USDA zone 7a I never let it dry out kept it in a bowl with a a bit of water the entire summer under a shrub
I love it...what the hell else have I got to do in lockdown. So true.
While I was cutting up the pieces I was thinking 'I must have something better to do' and then I thought 'Actually, no I haven't'.

Thanks for the tips Roger. Mine is in fine bark and it just finished blooming. I will be keeping a close eye on it before I get another one.
Mine are in full water culture and they are fine. After loosing some roots new ones are growing. Thay have not lost any leaves and have reflowered.

Mine have always gone down after a repot.
Hi roger, I have just divided my zygo the only one I have , two parts into pots and two I have mounted so all fingers crossed on both hands.

The roots are deceptive - they look strong and fleshy but they break just by 'looking at them'.

The last one - last chance.

I was told to water from the bottom or the new growths rot off
I think the idea of keeping them in bright light and growing stronger/faster helps with that problem.

If it does well, maybe it can have some 'friends'.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I hope so!
May I suggest you put the pot into a sturdy outer pot. They are prone to toppling over, otherwise I find them quite successful.🤞
I've had to stand it in a clay pot.
Why do you say this is its last chance to die or not? It looks extremely happy and healthy to me.
It is at the moment but in the past, they have always gone downhill and died after repotting.
Hopefully, that works out for you, please let us know how you like that cone pot.🤞🤞😊
First problem is they don't stand up so good so I've had to put it inside a clay pot.
I'm a new subscriber here. Hoping for an update on your zygo. Mine doesn't look well
Not an easy orchid to grow - they don't like stale media but don't like root disturbance either.
And another one bites the dust!! Ha ha just joking fingers crossed you've cracked it this time :)

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai thank you, I will order some now. 😊
Good luck.
Oh dear, a lot at stake! (Pardon the pun) No more Zygo's...or maybe it will go so well you'll decide to have a collection of them again!
I really like the blooms/fragrance but in the past, they've just not done well for me.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai "The past is the past" (but if it starts to suffer I would put it in a deeper pot).
