Just finished installing heating cable. Followed your directions. I was sure I was going to have about 30 feet extra but there was only about 4 feet that I was able to move into the gutter. Also, pointing out that we shouldn't be letting the water under the sidewalk was really helpful. We just had a new patio installed and the drainage goes under that. If that would have heaved from me doing this it would have been curtains. Thanks for the great videos. Kevin - Buffalo, NY
Without a doubt, this was most helpful and complete video on this topic. Congratulations on a job well done. Wish you folks were in the New England area.
Thank you, Howard! We're hoping to have a dealer in that area down the road. If you'd like to DIY visit heatcable.com. In May, the site will begin to answer more questions that you might come across for installation.
Thanks for the videos series, are really well explained. Maybe need a video about how to install the RS-2 roof sentry. I couldn't find the link for the power installation.
I need to do this to part of my roof as part of it already has the heat cable but I think I'm going to replace that and your video was the best I've seen on UA-cam so far. I like how you broke it down in the different sections and it's very thorough, thank you.
Great video. You are showing heating cable and the power cable running down the downspout. How do prevent cable from touching each other in the downspout?
Thank you! We appreciate the compliment! If you are interested in installing your own heat cable, but want a higher end cable, we now offer Self-Regulating Heat Cable at heatcable.com/shop/ give us a call if you have any questions. 801-896-8960. We hope to create more videos like this with self regulating heat cable on All Things Heat Cable channel. ua-cam.com/channels/DJ8GmPkApT1ZH_pfqLGBGQ.html
Great video series. So measure length of roof and multiply by factor of 4 for total cable needed, then add distance of gutters and downspouts? Do you have to double length of gutters since line loops around?
I love that you show the cable going through the pipe under the cement, but what happens on the other end. My gutter ends in a dry well. Do I run the heat cable part way into the gravel to ensure _that_ doesn’t freeze in those upper few inches still above the frost line? (Idaho frost lines are deep)
Oh my, I’m feeling scared already watching these guys kneel down at the edge of the roof.....and I’m not even on my roof yet 😫 I so wish I had a husband !!!
Great videos. Can you still install heat cables on a roof with no gutters? My house has a large overhang over a deck. Covered section of porch and no gutters. Will this type of heat cable installation work without gutters? Thanks!
We have a rubber-like whitesh roof material in a flat section of our roof which pitches slightly to a scupper. This area freezing. Can the heat cables be used safely on these types of surfaces? Do you recommend any specific type of adhesive? Thank you!
Yes, you can use heat cable on membrane roofs. We use a roof adhesive. We have it available in black or white. If you would like to purchase some from us, feel free to give us a call at 801-866-1110 ext 120.
I just ran my own here in Buffalo after watching this video. Thanks for the help! Question though - Do you leave it up all year long? You're gluing the clips down. I'd prefer to leave it along all year, but wondering how much that affects the life of the cable sitting up there in the sun all day all year.
Awesome Rick! No need to take the cable down. Drexan heat cable is rated to perform in the sun all year for 20+ yrs. There are other cables that only have a 2-5 yr life expectancy.
Hello I planing to install it on gutters which are located at garage which is attached to the house. Gutter keep freezing over winter and then drips water which turns in ice at the front entrance. My question is : Is it ok to instal on the roof as the garage is not heated or just run cable on the gutters only? Thank you
The product in this video is the lower grade cable. It's left installed all throughout the year, but only has about a 2-5 yr life expectancy. The homeowner didn't live in too cold a climate and didn't have the money to put in higher end cable. We offer Drexan heat cable and product accessories at heatcable.com/shop/ for more robust and higher efficiency systems. They're are also expected to last 20+ yrs.
Hello. We build custom thermostat controllers to activate the cable and have several options at WHC and heatcable.com. Give us a call at 801-896-8960 we'll talk about which type is right for your system.
Hello Radsan. Sorry we missed seeing your question before. Our self-regulating heat cable by Drexan is warrantied for 10+ yrs, but is built to last for 25+ yrs. The Constant wattage cables that come from hardware stores tend to last between 2-5 yrs. If you are interested in purchasing the SR cable - visit our website heatcable.com or give us a call at 385-367-5583. We assist in putting together a heat cable kit for a DIY install.
@@wasatchheatcable8757 Constant wattage cables can last far longer than 2 to 5 years. I just replaced one that was 12 years old. It was still working, but I replaced it just to be proactive in case I was on borrowed time.
No, this type of heat cable is constant wattage. We use Drexan, a much Higher End Cable, for our normal installs and it can be used on TPO, Poly flat pitch roofs. This video was created yrs ago to show how to install the box store on shingles. Visit heatcable.com for Drexan Self Regulating Heat Cable and products like roof adhesive and clips.
Please visit heatcable.com to find out the type of roof adhesive we use. You may purchase it there along with your clips and Drexan Factory Terminated Self-Regulating Kit.
This was at the request of the homeowner. Although, it's not a common way to run the cable it has been working out really well for our customer. Thanks for watching!
Great questions, Matthew. Ice dams tend to form on areas above cold zones on a home such as soffits. See video ua-cam.com/video/9vYelSFjIM0/v-deo.html Sometimes the damming will not allow the water to even reach the gutters, before it's blocked by ice, which is why the zig zag pattern is recommended above those areas. Hope this helps answer your questions!
Duane, there a lot of variables to determine installation price. Give us a call at 801-896-8960 if you'd like to learn more about installing your own heat cable system or get an estimate within our service area. Thanks!
Typical one installer not paying attention to another installers work. Apart from the esthetic wishes of the owner, why not ALWAYS run heat cable to the outside of the gutter? Firmly attached for heat conduction. But especially a LOOP inside the gutter? Might as well plug that gutter up from the beginning.
Hi Randy! There are a lot of factors that go into the price of an install. The best thing to do is call us to set up a free estimate for your home. We can even set up an estimate over the phone for you if you'd like. (801)866-1110

Best heating cable installation video I found. Very useful! Solid job!
Appreciate that Ethan!
It’s informative for sure, I watched all 7 sections of the video, following you step by step is not a brainer. I sincerely appreciate that.
How would you suggest laying the heat cable on a gutter with a leaf guard?
What black adhesive did you use to secure clips to asphalt shingles?
You ever get a response to this?

Wouldn’t you want to use the spacer clips for where you stuff the extra cable in the Down spout before you plug it in?

Being on the roof is not for everyone. Where are you located? Maybe we could install for you.

Is that code running the power cord sandwiched between the downspout sections?

What’s the spacing for your clips? In the instructions it says “15” for the base of the triangle but yours looks more than that
The heat cable in the down spout, does it need the spacers so they don't touch?

What about the power cord touching the heat strip in the elbow of the gutter?
The heat cable should have any affect on the power cord, but the out-shell on the power cord should be UV rated so it does not deteriorate over time.

why not just leave it fully in the rain gutters? why bother installing up on the shingles?

That gutter is full of crap. Isn't that going to impede the water flow ?

i started backwards lol
didnt you pull the wrong end through first its the female end, you should have the male end running through downspout and plug into the outlet NO?
Nope the video is correct it dead ends after the downspout you plug it in on opposite end
But the math you laid out doesn't account for all of this. Now what?
BTW these don't work
