A lot of people are confused about the result so we're going to explain it. The hammer effect occurs when there is a sudden rapid pressure rise in the pipes, resulting in a loud noise and potentially damaging the system. The main goal when using a hammer arrestor is to slow down the pressure buildup, rather then reduce the maximum pressure point. Water pressure spike gets absorbed by the piston inside of it, therefore softening the hit on your pipes. Would I need to use bother an arrester and a pressure regulator? It’s for my water drip irrigation for my garden bed.

No, the first time was 150psi, and the 2nd was only 145. 😅
The idea is correct, demonstration a bit short...
The potential energy stored in 150ft of line is way over the capacity of that little hammer arrestor. If there's not enough air to allow compression, demonstration doesn't work.
Uhh, looking at the before and after I don't see much difference at all. Both times it pegs to 150 psi, then drops to ~55 psi with a little oscillation. Pretty easy to make and install a simple air chamber. Turn off your water supple at the valve.
Cut your copper/Pex pipe near the valve.
Insert a T fitting.
Add a 6-12" piece of pipe/Pex to the vertical side of the T fitting, and cap the top of that pipe.
That entire section is now full of air.
Turn on your water valve, and water will fill the horizontal run, however not much of the vertical pipe.
When the shock wave bounces back during water hammer, the water will compress the air in the vertical pipe, filling part of the vertical pipe with water, and thus disperse the shockwave.
Plumbers used to add these near most valves during install, especially the hot for some reason.
I just threw a large expansion tank on. The little copper arresters are useless.

Agreed. The demonstration shows that the time to maximum pressure is longer with the arrestor; without the arrestor was very quick (~instantaneous) while with the arrestor was somewhat slower (~half a second). Doesn't seem like a lot but it makes a difference. Similar to auto crumple zones nowadays compared to old school solid frames that didn't give (crumple). Additionally, I believe the long run of PEX is also absorbing some of the pressure compared to if it were copper - I imagine a similar test with copper would show a higher maximum pressure. I understand that the problem with the simple air chambers you proposed is that over time the air gets absorbed by the water until there isn't an air chamber anymore which requires maintenance to drain the air chamber of water. The newer arrestors keep the air separate.
Seems like the pressure gage should of been installed after the arrestor instead of before to show the drop in pressure. Or would it still show the same result?
The pressure didn't change. Did you actually look at the pressure before posting this?

I reckon that a AA accumulator is improperly sized for this application; therefore, having little affect on the inertia of the water in a system of that magnitude.

Will athermal expansion tank do the same think as a water hammer arrestor? Will the tank provide protection for the entire plumbing system in the house

One of my water pipes makes loud knocking sound every few minutes that lasts for about a minute or so even when the water isn't running. I brought a plumber and he changed the water pressure regulator but that didn't solve the problem. I also bled the system but that didn't work either. Any suggestions?

What does it mean if you hear the knocking turning the water on too. After Installing arrestor the knocking is still there. Feels like loose pex behind wall

He is using PEX plastic piping that is not rigid. This kind of piping can expand a little and already acts like a hammer arrestor. The results would have been more noticeable if he used solid copper piping.
can I just throw water hammer arrestors throughout my system to prevent damage?
I have some water hammer issues but I can't get very close to the valve without making a hole in the wall. I can maybe get about 3-4 ft away to install an arrestor. I know you want them as close as possible. Does the distance have a large impact on effectiveness?
A simple rule of thumb is the closer the better, however that distance should not be concerning.
There are a lot of other ways to stop water hammer including using a similar length of pipe (12" or so long) with a cap,on the end. This should have been mentioned because it a lot less costly than your solution and works great!

@@fredsalazar620 We'd recommend installing it as close to the valve / fixture as possible. Normally that is where the shockwave would occur.

Hello Travis, the Hammer arrestor is absorbing the shockwave, that means the "water hammer" impact will be gradually reduced although the water pressure spike will be about the same. We hope that explains it!

@@PEXUniverse Air compression is what helps with your thought(pressure spike to 150psi). I challenge you to use 10 hammer arrestors in line and repeat experiment. My guess is you won't read 150psi spike anymore. The little arrestor used has almost no impact to your demonstration.

Way cheaper to make a dead leg in the pipe using a tee and a vertical 9 inch long straight pipe with a cap. Works the same and never wears out like your water hammer preventer. PEACE !!!!!
It'll get water logged eventually, but can be emptied if maintained.

He demonstrates the phenomenon, but doesn't demonstrate a useful solution nor does he suggest where in a system a hammer arrestor should be inserted.
