I have suffered from severe and debilitating panic attacks since age seven, to the point that I tried to kill myself at age fourteen. Now I am fifty three. I turned to alcohol and have been sober two and a half years. Buddhism and meditation saved my sanity and my life. Thank you for this.

“If you see the river, you’re not in it. If you’re in the river, you can’t see it even though you can feel it.” If you are aware of the thing, you aren’t controlled by it.
Thank you for pointing that out. I was simply going through comments and this gave me all I need for the day to contemplate on😁
so how can we apply this to anything? when I'm panicking, I tell myself "I'm in this panic thing so I can't see it even though I can feel it, therefore I'm not controlled by it" and that's supposed to make me no longer panic? 😂
@@chochooshoe when you acknowledge to yourself that you are in panic it means you are seeing the river, and before long you will be out of it.
On the other hand, experiencing the panic attack and getting lost in its sensations without acknowledging/allowing it, means you are only *feeling* and *not seeing* the river. Hope this helps clear things up.
@@chochooshoe I don't really know about that. What I do know is panic attacks happen because of your breathing, because your heart is beating to fast. The way to calm a panic attack is simply through breathing. Take deep breaths, hold them, and let it out slowly.
@@missy2543 it does not. Your advice does not work at all. That's not how calming a panic attack works at all. Specially if you are in a panic state. Simply thinking and acknowledging as you say. Does not work. It makes it worse.

AWARENESS = this big space (like sky) is always there inside you.
The secret is to recognize it.
First you watch neutrally, step back, take a break, you will be more aware step by step.
So be aware of everything inside of you: comfort, discomfort, doubt, anger, panic, tranquility, etc.
So when you are more aware, you bring space into and around your thoughts and emotions,
So the emotions and discomfort after all will disappear.
Your work is only to be aware.

Wow. What panic did for him, depression has done for me. It teached me, helped me grow. It was bad, but I survived and learned how to dance with it. And I missed it when it's gone. The same with me. Depression helped me grow in many ways, and I miss it now it has gone.
You overcome it, made peace with and understood it and I believe it can come back sadly...we just don't know it could at anytime. Though it, the depression, the friend it became and what you learned is one and still there. I have learned through Buddhism to "Be Friends" with my pain, my doubts and insecurities. I also have learned to be friends with small insects on my plants in the evening time.
Please see below notes I took during this awesome lesson about how to learn meditation.
The object of meditation is awareness - to recognize awareness and maintain it. Then you will have discovery within yourself. Awareness opens up and becomes wider and higher. Then we don't need to block our emotions, because they don't affect us as much anymore.
We practice meditation step by step. First we connect to a piece of awareness. How to practice awareness? Be aware of little details around you and in your body. That is meditation, too. Knowing what is going on right now - for example, pain. No need to seek to relieve the pain. But when a feeling is pleasant, be aware of it. Are you relaxed, stressed, neutral--what kind of sensation is there? Become aware of whatever you are feeling, all sensations in each body part. Think of awareness as space, and think of your feelings as the weather and clouds in that space. The space is always there but is perceived differently depending on the weather. Meditation makes us aware of the entire space.
You are allowed to feel relaxed or tight, have pleasant or unpleasant sensations, everything is allowed. If you think you are doing something wrong, you are aware of it so awareness is complete and pure. Just be yourself, be free, don't pretend, you can cry, laugh... if you cannot find awareness, that is also awareness. Awareness cannot find awareness. When done with meditation, open your eyes and rest your mind in bare awareness.
Any pain or negative feeling should be embraced rather than fought or ignored. Thought, emotion, perception - everything is within awareness.
When you feel angry, depressed, good, connect with your awareness of your body. Compassion, clarity, open-mindedness, joy, creativity, inner talents -- all these things will increase just with the practice of awareness. Even though meditation practice deals with breathing and awareness, but the final result is happiness.
When you see the river, it means you are outside the river. You can't see it when you fell into it. Slowly, you can see that feelings come, stay for a while and then leave our awareness.
Sound meditation is when the mind and ear are aware of the sounds around it. Breathing meditation is when you practice being aware of your breath. The spine must be literally (but loosely) straight and eyes should be closed, body relaxed. Be aware of sensations from head to feet. Then listen to the sound.
All these are meditation practices - we practice awareness. Real meditation is the state of awareness throughout the day - the practice is just practicing awareness.
Start with the type of meditation technique that feels easy: sound, body or breath. No matter what technique you use, be aware of the object and be aware of your awareness. The view of awareness changes the quality of your awareness so that you can be aware all the time -- even without the object (sound, breath or body sensation).
We can also practice emotion meditation after we learn the basic techniques. You can change your focus during your practice from one object of awareness toward another. For example, focus on the body parts that feel painful or feel neutral.
Don't watch the panic - watch the resistance, belief, or aversion to the panic. If you feel depressed or bad, exercise, sleep, read books...
Too much attachment to anything is also subject to meditation. Bringing into habit the view and the awareness of the attachment so we can see it clearly and distance ourselves from it. When we are too close to the attachment we can't see it we'll and be aware of it. So, we have to be aware (watch) the feeling that's bothering us.
If you can't fall asleep, be aware of the feeling of unsleepiness. Eventually, it will dissolve. If you fall asleep while you are being aware your sleep will continue into meditation and that will positively affect your subconscious mind.

By far one of the best teachings I've ever had. Very clear, concise and simple. Mingyur Rinpoche is a true gift to humanity and has understood the essence of Dzogchen in practical terms.
This man has opened my mind to the idea of meditation. When I first started doing the breathing stuff and had a thought of going deeper into meditation, however, I thought there was no way I'd have the ability to do it.
After watching this and understanding the ideas and principles behind it, everything just clicked.
I'm amazed at myself and when I think deeply about the thought I had before trying and comparing it to now. I can't help but get emotional.
The power of the mind, that thought, has always made me roll my eyes in laughter and ignorance. Once I opened myself up to the idea, it was very weird how fast things started to come together.

How to meditate:
1.-Have awereness of anything that your feel (thoughts, feelings, emotions) without critize (panic is ok, don't panic is also ok)
2.-Switch between sound awareness, breath awareness and body awareness when you get bored
3.-Take a step back (be aware about the thoughts and be aware about the toughts of the toughts, for instance: be aware of "I will not critize meditation")
4.-take a break

It's all good. Meditation will bring stuff up, laughter or tears - sometimes even both - pain or hallucinations, elation or boredom, itchiness or heat, or cold, lust or aversion.... anything you can feel or think - and some things you never knew were possible.
Ajahn Chah likened the mind with a forest pool. As the pool grows still, all kinds of animals will come to the pond to drink.

@@7brothersclub176 He is Tibetan but like he himself said he stayed in India for a few years to learn n understand meditation
Its namaste
You are able to teach incredibly profound lessons without appearing to be teaching at all. 🙏🏻❤️
Was thinking the exact same thing
Rinpoche Terger is so beautiful. I watch this over and over, not only fog the meditation, but for the laughter and happy, loving energy 🦋
This is one of the best things I have ever watched on UA-cam, thank you so much.
Try watching the Ven Punnaji then. I dare you. Haha
i agree he was very knowledgeable and helpful
i am resonating with your words big time in response to this video. Guided here for a reason right? :) honest truth vibes, simply adore the color scheme going on in the environment too while he lectures. Soooo calming for the soul.
Exactly same views
I was waiting for the couch to start floating..he is so light
This is so wonderful. As someone who has ‘suffered’ from panic all of my life and had countless unsuccessful therapies, this beautiful soul has put it all into perspective!! My panic is not my enemy, it is my best friend because it NEVER lets me make poor choices for myself!!! ❤️🙏 namaste!!
so did you permanently feel happier now because of that realization?
@@chochooshoe The realization is not enough until and unless we practice. I have been suffering from anxiety and panic attack since by childhood. 10 years ago i found vipassana meditation the same meditation this monk is explaining and i joined the 10 day meditation retreat and followed the practice after that and i haven't had a single panic attack since then. So, this actually works but we need to practice.
What a treat! Well, that was so fun to watch, feel the energy as if I was there! Beautiful 💚
Very wise and jolly.
He sounds like the wise Yoda from old school star wars guiding Luke Skywalker.
Excellent Video!
I like he’s teaching method, it’s great for people with small brains like me to understand,
Simple but clearer than most teachers.
This is a teacher with a genuine will to make people understand for unselfish reasons
You're right Liam. You seem like a humble person already, so you have a prerequisite to learning meditation. So i dont think you'd find it to hard to practice doing it. Meditation is a strange thing to practice for westerners anyway. My first practice was 5 minutes in a martial arts class. it seemed like an eternity, and many of us complained that it was boring. Some years later I did a 10 day silent retreat. I really benefited from it. Hard work but oh so worthwhile. If you get a chance to do a vipassana retreat do it. But remember doing a 10 day retreat is not to be taken lightly. Peace man!! 😊💞😊
Thanks for your reply Winston,
I am actually considering doing a vippasana retreat but first I'm going for ibogaine treatment for a few problems I have, expensive though
Hello Liam. How you getting on with your meditation?? Did you look up the Goenka, short anapana vid, on mindfulness meditation? Peace and love to you fellow mediator! 😊🙏💙😊
@@theliamofella Hello from New York, how is your treatment going? Hopefully you feel better soon
The blind leading the blind. Outstanding
Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you dont feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day! :)💖💖💖
This way perfect for me . I did not lose interest And it did not seem to drag on . Thank you for your Time and knowledge.
It's comforting to know that this is someone who is just as human as we are. He used his suffering to become his wisest teacher.
This video changed my life. I am incredibly grateful that it exists. Thank you.
I must say heartiest thanx to this Rinpoche Technique which is creating wonders to help stay in present moment and be aware every fraction of moment🙏🙏So Dear Rinpoche bro thanx a ton🙏🙏😇😇😍
Meditation Daily is the Best Gift you can give yourself and the rest of the world ❤
Great information! Thanks for sharing…
I have been following Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche for quite some time and he is my " little Budha "
He is my "giggling monk"!

39:10 Now I got it. Many say that there shouldn't be any thoughts in meditation. Clear mind. But they aren't correct. Thanks for clarification
methodical with least distractio and enhancement of calmness
Rf me
Thanks
They're the one correct, please try to understand the only mind with zeroness approaches the next stage which no one can ever define. watching thoughts is clearing them, the more you're aware about a thought, it fades off.
There is no possibility to be without any thoughts through the meditation. The main thing when meditating is to be in the present moment. Your brain will automatically always think something and you become aware of that and settle your mind back to the present. Having your mind focus on something, whether it is focusing on your breath, focusing on your body sensations like this man taught is just to make it easier to be in the present.

I love that you can hear the smile in his voice. He is very joyful and it’s soothing to my spirit. I started meditation because of my anxiety attacks and nightmares. I could listen to him talk all day.
How's your anxiety and nightmares doing since you started meditation ?
@@low-keyrighteous9575 almost completely gone! I meditate as I go to bed, (with binaurals on for chakra cleanse) and sleep so deep and peacefully. I have a chronic fatigue problem but haven’t had near as many incidents.
Are you doing good now? I started meditating aswell. I overthink, panic attack and all sort of. Feel good to see you healing with meditation.
@@anealmaharjan2458 Fortune to you
I have started my journey to mental health with meditation roughly seven years ago after daily suicide ideation. Nowadays, I describe myself as one of the happiest people on earth. Wish you all the best!
This speech is really helpful for me especially the quote " Awareness is like space "
Same😊
I dont understand it. If i go into my thought and forget where i am why is awareness there? Its like a movie: if i know i watch a movie then awareness is there. But if i go into the movie and forget i exist and sit and watch then why is awareness there?
@@pj956 awareness is like space and the clouds are like you're thoughts. Awareness means knowing the clouds - whether they are ugly, happy, confused, etc. but not being affected by them. Awareness is just knowing.
@@saltypotatochip4707 I think it's more about not being affected by them in a way that comes at a constraint/ detriment to your awareness rather than not being affected by them at all. It's the difference between seeing the thundercloud and being in it.
Edit: I've thought about it more and I've completely destroyed my brain
@Michele If we cannot recognize that it exists in the moment, what is the difference from the situation that it didnt exist? The only way we can tell that we have awerness is when we recognize it, if we don't do it, we can't tell wheater it exists at the moment
What a great Monk and what beautiful video. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
Wow, this really clarifies so much for me. I thought I was failing and there was something wrong. Thank you!
what i like about this man is he listen to everyone so carefully
This must be the result of his meditation’s practice or just his nature? I admire all the good listeners, I think they are somehow special, gifted people! And I wish to become a good listener too and improve it with meditation
Thank you!!! It took me 21 years to understand this. I feel blessed.
Oh really? I didn't even understood a single word.
@@sabitamahela yeah, I didn't learn a thing. I don't see how you apply this to anything. I don't know what all these people learned.

How does that work? So, reality is temporary and not constant but always changing? .
I got an extremely wise lesson on meditation while sanding and refinishing these cabinets at work. What a time to be alive!! We are more connected now than ever before in our documented history!
I did not understand much what he says but sitting there and talking make me peaceful.
I love his sense of humor. It was wonderful to see him laughing so hard! He’s delightful!
Only the truly free can laugh so freely. The ability to get spontaneous giggles, even when among strangers should be one goal of us all.
He talks about his own struggles and absurdities that he's experienced with meditation, it puts it in a fun and real place from one human to another,
Sadly, he won't be laughing when he realizes he didn't make it into Gods heavenly kingdom because of false worship of Satan, buddah. Please everyone seek our LORD and SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST IN THE BIBLE. God is the Father, God is the SON JESUS CHRIST, God is the HOLY SPIRIT, all at once, always! HE is the ONE True God of all creation and He loves us! Don't be duped by Satan/ Buddah! BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST died to pay for your sins on the cross and resurrected from the dead three days later and after ascended back into Heaven so we could have eternal life with Him. THERE IS NO OTHER SALVATION FOR US. ALWAYS BE THANKFUL FOR JESUS!
@@slamee100 sadly slamee you won't be laughing when you realize you didn't make into God's kingdom because you Worship the prophet of God instead of God, Only those that worship the God of Abraham the one true God will make it to the Kingdom of God.

Wonderful session! so much of the population in the United States needs this! but they will not allow it to reach the people! when people are unstable and sickly, they are dependent on others, be it clergy, doctors or relatives or someone else!
