@@chochooshoe when you acknowledge to yourself that you are in panic it means you are seeing the river, and before long you will be out of it.
On the other hand, experiencing the panic attack and getting lost in its sensations without acknowledging/allowing it, means you are only *feeling* and *not seeing* the river. Hope this helps clear things up.

@@chochooshoe I don't really know about that. What I do know is panic attacks happen because of your breathing, because your heart is beating to fast. The way to calm a panic attack is simply through breathing. Take deep breaths, hold them, and let it out slowly.

The net is full of people trying to teach meditation. Please allow me to interrupt. I do research on how Buddhism disappeared in Bihar. I realized it never disappeared from Bihar. Buddhists simply failed to research Indian Buddhism. They looked at Buddhism through the sphere of their own cultures searching for only the Buddha. Buddha had a myriad of names in different villages according to his teachings there. Example. His favorite teaching was 'Lust and desire causes pain. Remove lust and desire, and pain is removed'. Translated into Bihari (where the Buddha story took place) it is DHUKH HARAN meaning to remove dukha. Three dozen villages pray to DUKH HARAN Baba. Its clear that DUKH HARAN Baba is none other than the Buddha. Problem is Buddhists are searching only for the Buddha. In the real Vaishali the Buddha begged for alms. The locals there pray to 'BHIKHAINI' Baba (Beggar Baba). Bhikhaini was mispronounced by Buddhists as Bhikshu. Who is BHIKHAINI Baba. The Buddha no doubt. But people are searching for a man called Buddha. In the real Vaishali, in Beluha the Buddha suffered a sickness and felt he had grown old. The locals pray to 'BURHA' Baba (Old Baba). Who is BURHA Baba. The Buddha no doubt. In the real Vaishali the Lichavies pressurized Buddha not to die. They trailed him to Bandagawan pressurizing him not to die. To put pressure in Hindi is DABESHWAR. Three dozen villages around the stupa where Buddha gave the Lichavies his patra, the villagers pray to Baba 'DABESHWAR NATH' meaning the man who won the pressurizing game. It was the the Buddha no doubt as he gave the Lichavies his patra and succeded in sending them back. But Buddhists are searching for the Buddha. In Pidhauli (Vaishali) the local deity is Bardiha Baba. Bardiha means the Baba who didn't allow us to stay where he was staying. Bardiha Baba is the Buddha no doubt because he didn't allow the crowd of Lichavies to stay with him in Bandagama. Forgive me for commenting out of the topic. I just wanted to impart this information to Buddhists.

Please see below notes I took during this awesome lesson about how to learn meditation.
The object of meditation is awareness - to recognize awareness and maintain it. Then you will have discovery within yourself. Awareness opens up and becomes wider and higher. Then we don't need to block our emotions, because they don't affect us as much anymore.
We practice meditation step by step. First we connect to a piece of awareness. How to practice awareness? Be aware of little details around you and in your body. That is meditation, too. Knowing what is going on right now - for example, pain. No need to seek to relieve the pain. But when a feeling is pleasant, be aware of it. Are you relaxed, stressed, neutral--what kind of sensation is there? Become aware of whatever you are feeling, all sensations in each body part. Think of awareness as space, and think of your feelings as the weather and clouds in that space. The space is always there but is perceived differently depending on the weather. Meditation makes us aware of the entire space.
You are allowed to feel relaxed or tight, have pleasant or unpleasant sensations, everything is allowed. If you think you are doing something wrong, you are aware of it so awareness is complete and pure. Just be yourself, be free, don't pretend, you can cry, laugh... if you cannot find awareness, that is also awareness. Awareness cannot find awareness. When done with meditation, open your eyes and rest your mind in bare awareness.
Any pain or negative feeling should be embraced rather than fought or ignored. Thought, emotion, perception - everything is within awareness.
When you feel angry, depressed, good, connect with your awareness of your body. Compassion, clarity, open-mindedness, joy, creativity, inner talents -- all these things will increase just with the practice of awareness. Even though meditation practice deals with breathing and awareness, but the final result is happiness.
When you see the river, it means you are outside the river. You can't see it when you fell into it. Slowly, you can see that feelings come, stay for a while and then leave our awareness.
Sound meditation is when the mind and ear are aware of the sounds around it. Breathing meditation is when you practice being aware of your breath. The spine must be literally (but loosely) straight and eyes should be closed, body relaxed. Be aware of sensations from head to feet. Then listen to the sound.
All these are meditation practices - we practice awareness. Real meditation is the state of awareness throughout the day - the practice is just practicing awareness.
Start with the type of meditation technique that feels easy: sound, body or breath. No matter what technique you use, be aware of the object and be aware of your awareness. The view of awareness changes the quality of your awareness so that you can be aware all the time -- even without the object (sound, breath or body sensation).
We can also practice emotion meditation after we learn the basic techniques. You can change your focus during your practice from one object of awareness toward another. For example, focus on the body parts that feel painful or feel neutral.
Don't watch the panic - watch the resistance, belief, or aversion to the panic. If you feel depressed or bad, exercise, sleep, read books...
Too much attachment to anything is also subject to meditation. Bringing into habit the view and the awareness of the attachment so we can see it clearly and distance ourselves from it. When we are too close to the attachment we can't see it we'll and be aware of it. So, we have to be aware (watch) the feeling that's bothering us.
If you can't fall asleep, be aware of the feeling of unsleepiness. Eventually, it will dissolve. If you fall asleep while you are being aware your sleep will continue into meditation and that will positively affect your subconscious mind.

I totally agree. This man has opened my mind to the idea of meditation. When I first started doing the breathing stuff and had a thought of going deeper into meditation, however, I thought there was no way I'd have the ability to do it.
After watching this and understanding the ideas and principles behind it, everything just clicked.
I'm amazed at myself and when I think deeply about the thought I had before trying and comparing it to now. I can't help but get emotional.
The power of the mind, that thought, has always made me roll my eyes in laughter and ignorance. Once I opened myself up to the idea, it was very weird how fast things started to come together.
Today is the second day of my self-proclaimed spiritual journey.
Happy New Year to all, and I hope you have a wonderful 2023!

    How to meditate:
1.-Have awereness of anything that your feel (thoughts, feelings, emotions) without critize (panic is ok, don't panic is also ok)
2.-Switch between sound awareness, breath awareness and body awareness when you get bored
3.-Take a step back (be aware about the thoughts and be aware about the toughts of the toughts, for instance: be aware of "I will not critize meditation")
    4.-take a break

It's all good. Meditation will bring stuff up, laughter or tears - sometimes even both - pain or hallucinations, elation or boredom, itchiness or heat, or cold, lust or aversion.... anything you can feel or think - and some things you never knew were possible.
Ajahn Chah likened the mind with a forest pool. As the pool grows still, all kinds of animals will come to the pond to drink.
Let whatever is there be there and watch the mind so it doesn't start to construct a big story about it (and if it does, just know that it does ;-)).

You're right Liam. You seem like a humble person already, so you have a prerequisite to learning meditation. So i dont think you'd find it to hard to practice doing it. Meditation is a strange thing to practice for westerners anyway. My first practice was 5 minutes in a martial arts class. it seemed like an eternity, and many of us complained that it was boring. Some years later I did a 10 day silent retreat. I really benefited from it. Hard work but oh so worthwhile. If you get a chance to do a vipassana retreat do it. There is no possibility to be without any thoughts through the meditation. The main thing when meditating is to be in the present moment. Your brain will automatically always think something and you become aware of that and settle your mind back to the present. Having your mind focus on something, whether it is focusing on your breath, focusing on your body sensations like this man taught is just to make it easier to be in the present.
