I hope your having fun with the DLC, I was feeling burnt out for a year now than the new Poland tree wasn't fun for me so I've uninstalled to force myself to take a break. I tried 2 Soviet games and got completely demolished, maybe it was the CAS because the second time I was much more prepared but it didn't matter.
@Bitt3rsteel Thank you very much for the manual, good hints. It is one of the last 2 for me to go. I had to smile a bit that among victim of the war were the Russian names butchered, like Zaporozhe :D
The manual worked amazing, except two things. First - it seems that some patch has improved AI ability to counter breatkthrus. Whenever I get the first tile, even when the wings are pinned, they somehow manage to attack on my breaking thru army, and it takes some 12 days to stop the attack. In the meantime, AI rearranges defense. Second - With 100% World Tension in 38, Romanian Dobrudja gets attacked by Bulgaria (on historical). That draws CZE and RO to allies. Munich then fails, Germany attacks too early, overextends itself , and crumbles eventually.
id reccomend holding Dnipropetrovsk and kiev as part of the defensive line because it gives you some more factories and allows you a better angle to attack from. it isnt protected by the river but it is urban and you can build forts there
Tried this and it worked. The Germans went all out trying to take Kiev, almost lost it even with level 5 forts surrounding the city. They mostly left Dnipropetrovsk alone as they had bad supply.
in addition to it being a supply hub. This means that the enemy does not get supply. This is also why you should hold over a march northwest of grodnoor bobryansk cus it is a supply hub.
Followed the guide, mostly went well until I capitulated Soviet Union. Then I had Turkey revolt against me because of resistance (Stalin in his infinite wisdom put No Garrison in Turkey and Romania) and Turkey joined the axis and called Germany in at mid 1938.
That exactly what Stalin want, he trolled you even when he already dead. Just like he trolled people who want to visit his dead body, he crushed those mfs when he laid in state
32:40 quick tip for design companies. You no longer have to have the design company before you finish the research. If you get the company later you can retroactively add the bonus by creating an upgraded variant of the plane/tank etc, or even by refitting a ship. There's also a neat trick with ships with some countries where you take the coastal ship designer for -25% range and -25% build cost, spam a bunch of the now cheap ships, and then change designer and retrofit something cheap on the ship like sonar/radar to get the benefits of the new design company.
I don't know how but during my run for this achievement my 20 18-width raw infantry divisions, who survived the encirclement in Italy when France got annexed, managed to conquer the entire lower half of Italy.
I noticed that you were getting annoyed at the fact you had to travel across from Romania to Siberia. Something that isn't very known is that you can bookmark an area when you click on a state and if you double click it again after pinning the bookmark it will traverse your camera over there quickly
I feel like the Mass Assault doctrine that reduces infantry battalion size by .4 is really strong in this dlc. Having that much more org in a equal width division is some good soup.
Mass Assault is very strong for the Soviets. The supply consumption, org, combat width and breakthrough is amazing for the initial defence then counter attack
Just tried this strategy out - the Kingdom of Romania broke away anyways, creating a second Romania on the map, right around the time that Ukraine declared independence. Turkey remained conquered, though. The new Romania wasn't considered one of the break-away states through the focus and were instantly guaranteed by France and Britain.
"Whoever put you in charge was an idiot", the hilarious part is Stalin was never put in charge by any one person, Stalin was general secretary in the civil war and that may not sound like much but he had the power to give out jobs so he gave out good jobs to allies to secure their loyalty so when Lenin died I do believe Trotsky was his chosen successor but Stalin won because he had more political allies
Little trick for design companies that I found out was if you research an aircraft or tank and then hire a design company and then go into the production tab and increase a stat or change a component on the tank and you automatically get the buffs from the designer. Yeah this surprised me too 😂
The AI has DEFINITELY gotten so much smarter, and they really do acknowledge the importance of the supply network. As Sanation-Falange Poland I STRUGGLED against the Soviets, the AI really knows how defend supply hubs and they actually hold back divisions now, so essential zones are heavily protected. They even protect railways far back from paratroopers!
Naval invade turkey at the start of the war on Istanbul, the province next to it, and the other side of the straight. It's never defended well, it's a lot of victory points, you can easily take all the land in Europe, and you can very easily expand to take all of turkey from there. Makes the war ridiculously easy. Sometimes you can even take a second port somewhere else
I mostly followed this guide (but completely cheesed the civil war). With tension so high, Czechoslovakia refused Sudetenland, and WWII kicked off early. Had to manually justify in 1942 because France is still alive... Pro tip: if you manage to get all 18 NVKD divisions killed in Turkey, the civil war is even easier.
Answer to your question: Beria. Beria helped to place Stalin in charge. And He helped to remove Stalin later. Though Molotov had something to do with it as well.
Oh and the supply bug you noticed in the black sea (at 18:49) has a hint that explains why it happened - when you hovered over the port I could see what the problem was. It describes the supply route as "Leningrad - Sinop". The reason that happens is that supply by default routes through the highest level rail network and it goes for the highest level naval base - unsurprisingly those are both in Leningrad. Now because you're at war with Turkey the supply can't flow through the straits, normally it could if Turkey backs down on the straits and you're not at war with them (lol). This is obviously a bug though - the AI hasn't figured out to reroute supply when a route is impossible which is such a small brain design choice. Anyway loving the video content, keep it up! I've read some confirmed bug reports in the PDX forums so they know about the issue but just haven't fixed it yet.
One idea for this is to put the NKVD units up on the peninsula at the furthest eastern point in Siberia, where they will get stuck and become completely useless for Stalin once the civil war begins.
at the end of civil war if you create a faction and invite bulgaria before she join axis (they accept cos unallineated) later they will attack romania that join allies so you kik bulgaria from your faction that join axis and involve germany in a preventive war (may1939) with allies so you can gain a bit time and germany remain slightly weakened
You don't have to wait for a plane with aircraft designer. You can upgrade a plane after hiring a aircraft designer and still get bonus, in spite of having researched that plane without bonus. Because it's patched out after NTB DLC.
Following on Bittersteel's comment about the DLC promoted through the tank designer, the DLC... 1) Nerfed tanks into the Pripiat marshes. 2) Boosted the "org wall" infantry strategy. 3) Made air indispensable. 4) Made railway guns op.
For me tanks are still op. I saved stalingrad with an army of T 34s even though I was 4000 tanks in deficit. I also conquered Germany by 1943 as USA with improved mediums.
Yep, the wording on that tooltip could have been better. Where it says Stalin may start a war, I figured "Good, he starts wars all the time, maybe I can use it as cover to kick off my revolution." It worked out though, because I had everything but the church construction done up to "The hands do," and near as I can figure the game gave me that one for free when Stalin started a war with my faction.
The key here is to use appropriate division templates. If you choose to not abandon Eastern Poland, it is mostly forest so having 21 Width divisions will give the Germans a very hard time here, I only lost 1 tile this way. The Bulgarian border both in the north and on Turkey is all plains, so 15 width. The only tricky one to defend is the Hungarian border, some are mountains and some are plains but once the enemy push to the middle area, they will run out of supply.
You should give going down the Third Rome tree after finishing the Tsar. It's pretty cool, and you're no longer green, but purple! Otherwise, great job! I tried a different kind of strategy and got decimated by Germany because I was always low on guns. No matter what I tried to do, I could never get enough guns! Haha!
Watching the video, enjoying the commentary, plotting the downfall of the soviets in my own head... and then suddenly a wild Dwayne Johnson appears... This sounds like that one dream I had...
So Bittersteel I was thinking.. you always say air wings of 50 is optimal because 50 is the minimum amount needed to do sorties, but does that mean if you take any casualties the wing stops fighting until it gets replacements? If that's the case I think you can make a good argument that wings of 100 are more optimal since your planes keep fighting after taking loses. Thoughts?
During the fight with turkey, I think the tanks that landed are trying to get supply from leningrad, and cant because of the dardanelles. Even though you have crimea the game doesn't see that as a viable option for some reason. It loves using leningrad over all other ports
At the 32 minute mark you took your fighters of research because you didn't have the design company - correct move for pre-NSB but, I've learned that in NSB once you have the designer any variant of a plane, ship or tank made while you have that designer willy APPLY THE DESIGNER BONUS (huge change so caps are appropriate) for the new variant (in the case you have an older designer it will override the previous bonus but you do not lose any other models that you haven't tweaked since getting a new designer bonus). What that means now is that you could have kept your research on planes, once you got the designer done a +1 engine modification or something and every new LaGG-3 you make will have the MiG design bonus applied to it :) Enjoy all the new strats you can do with this knowledge!
18:50 you can't get supply in because Turkey closes the Bosporus, only trade is accessible into the Black Sea because of it, same reason you can't get your navy in or out of the Black Sea.
But that makes no sense. Because u have your own ports in the black sea and shouldnt need to pass the Bosporus. Its stupid convoy routing bug. The convoys try to reach the black sea from Leningrad instead of any black sea port.
@@Bitt3rSteel Yeah it's weird, the strait crossing says it only allows trade to come in which I would imagine is convoys, probably an oversight or game mechanics colliding in weird ways.

If you are following this guide now, there is a thing you can do to make the civil war very easy, not even requiring you to build the railway. Step 1: in the war against romania, get your nkvd divisions encircled and destroyed. Step 2: before doing the focus to start the war, justify on the usa, when world tension gets over 50 (I recomand 55) stop the justification. Step 3: and, change every division in your army to a template consisting of 1 battalion of infantry/cav, and I also added 1 battalion of aa, to have them in low strenght. Step 4: disband your airforce Step 5: with a few days left on the focus, lend lease everything in your stockpile to spain ( tanks, guns, trains, planes, everything) Step 6: delete/discontinue every division template exept the aa one Step 7: after the civil war starts, cancel the lend lease, and, change your army to another template (in my testing, even 3 battalions of inf can push them) Step 8: snake.
Came to see how you did this achievement after getting it myself, your way was muuuuch easier haha. I didnt do any cheesy early wars, just a normal civil war, then spent 3.5 years holding off the Germans while I built an airforce and tank force. then rolled the Germans, Romanians, Hungarians, Bulgarians, etc. I resigned myself to the fact I was going to have to go to war with the allies to get Ankara, but Turkey attacked me just 1 month after I defeated Germany and rolling them before the Allies arrived proved relatively easy. Good guide!
@@BleaK1211 I never play on ahistorical so no. Its been a while so I can't remember tbh. The last scripted focus for Turkey on historical is 'Abuse the Office of Soil Products' so I have to assume that they just justified on me and declared due to the obscene amount of World Tension I had caused.
Nice video. I've had that same convoy bug that you had around 19:00 while playing as the brits in redux, I was Naval invading German Denmark but I never got supply, my allies did though. That was extremely annoying, I built harbors in almost every tile to fix it somehow but it didn't work

5:46 Objection! After some tries bringing back Romanovs some generals will come to you because they were in fear of Stalin (at least thats what i am thinking of when they come to me) not all of them of course but some will change sides
I hate the fact as Russia I've got barely two and a half army group of generals/Field Marshall. The cost of hiring general is just ridiculous after the third or 4th. And the Officer corp is not helping.
The problem with this defensive line is that Germany has 5 airfields in Ukraine/yellow air, overstacking aircraft and devastating soviets. In Belarus with only 2 airfileds plus some from Poland the air in the end is green. A more advanced defence in Ukraine to cover airfileds is better and viable. In a historical game Eastern Poland is massively red and undefendable.
Something I did in addition to this guide was placing no garrison for Poland so they had very high resistance once Germans took over. Just don't let it get too high before the war. Can do the same with Romania after the civil war.
Light tanks are great for naval invasions. There might be some debuff, but it's not a problem. I can conquer England with 10 German Light Tank divisions.
Neat! Hadn't tried Russia since the DLC dropped. Defaulted to testing it as Germany and was rather surprised at seeing 2-3k allied fighters (including T2s) in 39. Red skies were not fun.
“Oh, this country is a mess, Stalin. Whoever put you in charge was an idiot.” Let me check my notes here…. Ah, yes. I believe it was Stalin who put Stalin in charge.
19:00 it's because the convoy route leaves from Leningrad, not from crimea (dumb), regardless of whether ur fighting in sakhalin or in sweden, the route starts at Leningrad. You no longer have access to the bosporus so you can't run your convoys through there (stupid mechanic)
at 6:53 when u said whoever put stalin in charge was an idiot. Stalin put himself in charge, he was the person who gave people jobs and the dictator before him didnt want stalin to bein charge

6:51 He put him in charge 💀💀
“As Russia I have run out of manpower.”
Me: wait, thats illegal
If you are following this guide now, there is a thing you can do to make the civil war very easy, not even requiring you to build the railway.
Step 1: in the war against romania, get your nkvd divisions encircled and destroyed.
Step 2: before doing the focus to start the war, justify on the usa, when world tension gets over 50 (I recomand 55) stop the justification.
Step 3: and, change every division in your army to a template consisting of 1 battalion of infantry/cav, and I also added 1 battalion of aa, to have them in low strenght.
Step 4: disband your airforce
Step 5: with a few days left on the focus, lend lease everything in your stockpile to spain ( tanks, guns, trains, planes, everything)
Step 6: delete/discontinue every division template exept the aa one
Step 7: after the civil war starts, cancel the lend lease, and, change your army to another template (in my testing, even 3 battalions of inf can push them)
Step 8: snake.
Good guide!
Why did Turkey attack you after defeating the Germans? Were you playing on ahistorical?
@@BleaK1211 I never play on ahistorical so no. Its been a while so I can't remember tbh. The last scripted focus for Turkey on historical is 'Abuse the Office of Soil Products' so I have to assume that they just justified on me and declared due to the obscene amount of World Tension I had caused.
Nice video. I've had that same convoy bug that you had around 19:00 while playing as the brits in redux, I was Naval invading German Denmark but I never got supply, my allies did though. That was extremely annoying, I built harbors in almost every tile to fix it somehow but it didn't work
Bitter, Puppets always switch to the enemy, always. I've played with germany, puppeting France at the beggining and then take de kaiser path. This puppet switched to de "mr. Smitler" side
In my russia games I always build extra supply in the kherson-zaporizhzhia area because supply down there gets really bad
Do you wanna have a crack at forming the nordic federation as Estonia? Have been trying a lot of different things mysef, but it's quite the challenge
19:00 I'd imagine conveys are deployed elsewhere than the Black Sea, hence the Turkish straits blocking your access for naval invasions
Hey Bitter, could yo do Anastasia Romanov next time ? I like hidden characters playthoughs
Fun fact stalin put himself in charge
Giving you a virtual smooch for these guides
Something I did in addition to this guide was placing no garrison for Poland so they had very high resistance once Germans took over. Just don't let it get too high before the war. Can do the same with Romania after the civil war.
yooo that sounds smart
"Oh this Country is a mess, Stalin whoever put you in charge wa an idiot."
Should we tell him?
A great and fun think to watch will be the coronation of Wojtek as king of Poland. Great vid btw keep the awesome content up
Fun fact: Filipp Oktyabrsky IS the head of the Black Sea Fleet in real life.
44:00 Using tanks in cities combined with low supply really hurts them.
Bitt3rSteel: Oh Stalin, whoever put you in charge was an idiot.
*Stalin starts sweating profusely*
oh boy just got home from work and vid dropped 4 minutes ago, time to get an achievement.
Light tanks are great for naval invasions.
There might be some debuff, but it's not a problem. I can conquer England with 10 German Light Tank divisions.
26:14 im pretty sure its because theyre field marshals because the same thing happened to me in my own russia game
Great guide. Still have trouble with it since the DLC thinks warmongering Greece, Baltic States, ect. are considered 'historical' paths. XD
Isn't Italy bugged for when it starts justifying on Yugoslavia
Yeah, sometime they are just...weird
I know, what I will be watching on evening after work :)
Enjoy!
"because cas is incredibley powerful" happy alex the rambler noises
This got me the achievement, thanks!
Neat!
Hadn't tried Russia since the DLC dropped.
Defaulted to testing it as Germany and was rather surprised at seeing 2-3k allied fighters (including T2s) in 39.
Red skies were not fun.

“I could still pick up women”
-Benito Mussolini 1945
6:50 funny thing is, I believe Stalin put HIMSELF in charge, yes?
How is your panzer division build? Good video.
I know this is older but I still find artillery divisions to be better then tanks. Just put support anti tank and air
“Oh, this country is a mess, Stalin. Whoever put you in charge was an idiot.”
Let me check my notes here….
Hey, cant you just click the hub closest to the area you are fighting in for upgrading the entire optimal network?
at 6:53 when u said whoever put stalin in charge was an idiot. Stalin put himself in charge, he was the person who gave people jobs and the dictator before him didnt want stalin to bein charge
If your planes are worse than the enemy just put them on inteception and you are going to trade favorably
25:26 just make a naval base it is much cheaper than supply hubs and it gives plenty of supply
15:36 I wonder if there's a Doux/Sultan of Batman in CK2/3 now
