I am pretty certain that you only loose the achievement if they take control of a state, not just one tile. I got this achievement by attacking poland at the start of the game and puppeting Ukraine and Belarus, than accepting the Baltics in the Commintern. This leaves a tiny border in Romania (and maybe Turkey) and the coast to be defended. By not calling in anybody in the commintern, the Axis can only attack over the large river in Romania, which is very easy to defend. I just sat back and relaxed till 1945, ate away the german air and let the Allies finish them off. They did take a small island in the Arctic sea by naval invading from Norway, but that didn't cancel the achievement as I was still in control of the state on the mainland. A bit cheesy, but it works.
How would you get the achievements for not losing any core territory if you sacrifice cores to being a puppet? I feel skeptical but don’t have my pc rn to test
@@guydudedudeguy9030 He didn't sacrifice any territory: he puppeted Ukraine and Belarus only in the polish slice of their territories, while maintaining all of soviet core territories
Warning to everyone: I made a mistake and declared on germany. This made japan enter the war due to the tripartite pack, taking Vladivostok and making me loose the achievement. Don't make my mistake.
15:30 You don't lose them, they change accordingly with your doctrine. E.g.: Tip of the spear (Grand Battleplan) changes to the respective spirit of Mobile Warfare
Regarding supply issues: Prioritise motorised logistical support by pushing twice on the "cavalry button" next to the select all button. Be sure to have enough trucks in store though. Combine this with a logistical genius in the high command, logistical support company, logistical wizard trait on your field marshals and using transport planes as logistic supply then you will never have any issues with supply again!
Yep I have been doing that as the British Raj in Africa. I have established a solid front, and am building railway lines behind the lines to maintain supply. I have also built a few airbases as well to allow the Allies to pile extra planes in. I have 2 Submarine Wolfpacks operating, one in the Red Sea, and the other one off the West Coast of Africa. They are giving massive losses to the Axis forces. Plus I have been sniping their supply Hubs and making sure I have enough forces to hold them. That is really grinding the Axis down. But the British AI insists on doing a 1 Division attack on a territory where there are 5 Divisions waiting for them.
I don't even get the point of logistics companies anymore; logistical genius is very situational. If you maximise motorised logistical support, it will work fairly well even if you have like -4k trucks in stockpile due to redistribution and prioritising, and once you build like 20 transport planes, the supply issue is solved forever.
Something I learned is shift+click the "Divisions waiting to be assigned" button automatically selects all divisions that are not assigned to an army, allowing you to organize within seconds.
Another nice thing under the cominterm section: the focus to buddy with up sinkiang. It unlocks decisions that help them out and give you -1% consumer goods on your 5 year plan spirit (for like -3% in total). After that you use another decision to puppet them.
I gave up my first run after failling to assasinate Trotsky for the fourth time in a row ... I had sent enought equipment for a small army and i'm now convinced that my agent worked for Trotsky and was helping him assembling his army.
tbh, head smashing works when you have air superiority and a ton of CAS, but AI does it anyway. Only when it has millions of casualties finally realises that it is not a good idea.
@@martinnimcevic565 you only really need that if your army strength is much lower than your enemy. Even then i find it better to build 13/4/2 since in those cases you are probably a minor and AA is cheaper.
42:41 So just wanted to say how crushing of an encirclement that was, a division contains around 6,000-25,000 soldiers and that was an encirclement of 51 of them, so the average best outcome would be 306,000 captured/killed and the average worst would be *1.27 million* soldiers captured/killed. At this point this isn't a war- *it's pest control* . Also great video as always!
We are 1,27 Million Nazis! How many are you? 4! You want to destroy the Germans with 4 Soviets?! A Single Soviet would be enough to destroy the Germans! You are superior in only one respect! That is? You are better at dying! Cease communications.
Another great montage, good job. I like the way you cut the war to keep it short, while referring to other videos for content: I think it's smart. We're not all at same level, seeing a pro running through the details is so useful. One idea: maybe to help, you can make some short tutorial vids about attacking/encircling, spirits, research... and refer to them during your achievement runs? Anyway I like your stuff the like it is, continue the great work.
Latest patch finally fixed the Montreux Convention, as Soviets you can now freely use the straits and not worry about you fleet being stuck in the Black sea
In Spain if you have spam planes at the start of the game, put the tank division on high priority, and focus on producing tanks trucks and infantry equipment, you can send 3 air volunteer squadrons and 6 tank division to Spain. Get Zhukov and any good field marshal you have and focus on encircling Sevilla or just the Southern front general, focus on railroads and supply hubs. Your tanks are OP in Spain and can make encirclements work. Eventually if you have good micro you can win the war in Spain and gain Spain as a puppet
lol that small detail with the peace deal " now you just have to wait for 1945 for the achievment" while the USSR (you) have 1945 points in the peac deal... that is just the icing on the cake XD btw love the video :)
After-action report! Finally did this, with some changes: 1. Sent air volunteers to Spain for that sweet speed. 2. Disbanded the armored divisions after the first war. We are going to turtle up. 3. This is very important: created five puppets out of the first war; the two from Turkey and the three from Romania. The three puppets from Romania confuses the Hungary and Bulgaria paths, but forces Germany to go through it's usual path. Sent volunteers and air volunteers to China. Air XP gain was enormous. Then did my built. Two army groups in the German border, one extra army in the Hungarian border. A thin line of forts in the border, and... Nothing. No war until December 1941. Didn't lose a single tile. Shot down the German air force with my upgraded 1940 fighters. Absolutely wild to recreate the Maginot in the steppes.
I have always wanted a game that would allow for a Trotskyite USSR. Trotsky was a natural general and very oriented towards war, which is part of why Stalin was so paranoid of his generals...Stalin was an administrative clerk while Trotsky led the revolutions and single-handedly saved the USSR against the White wars.

I found it quite helpful to convert around 6 divisions of the nkvd to support a romanian naval invasion as it drags away a few romanian divisions on the frontline wich makes it a lot easier to pierce the river on the frontline and commit to a full-scale invasion.
i got this one by never going for bessarabia and baltics, and stacking 5 million men on the border. the AI wasn't able to cancel the non-aggression pact xD
Ive found that if you annex transylvania you can actually prevent hungary from ever joining the axis (or significantly delay i dont know) allowing you to do a preemptive invasion and letting you stack two full army groups on the german border (though theres a chance they'll never declare if you're too strong, first time i got this achievement i made it to 1945 without them ever declaring war, even though they had capitulated france and were winning in africa)
While probably not the best idea, for fixing the problem with turkey you can always satellite Kurdistan and give all of turkey to Kurdistan. This basically gives you a weaker turkey puppet but one that won't be glitchy. Not sure how world tension exactly fairs though in difference between giving all the land to Kurdistan and taking it all, so might not be worth it long term due to allies.
Order No. 227 (Russian: Приказ № 227}, romanized: Prikaz No. 227) was an order issued on 28 July 1942 by Joseph Stalin, who was acting as the People's Commissar of Defence. It is known for its line "Not a step back!" (Ни шагу назад!, Ni shagu nazad!), which became the primary slogan of the Soviet press in summer 1942. The order established that each front must create one to three penal battalions (Shtrafbats), which were sent to the most dangerous sections of the front lines.[3] From 1942 to 1945, a total of 422,700 Red Army personnel were sentenced to penal battalions as a result of court-martials.[4] The order also directed that each army must create "blocking detachments" at the rear that would shoot "panic-mongers and cowards". In the first three months, blocking detachments shot 1,000 penal troops and sent 24,000 to penal battalions. By October 1942, the idea of regular blocking detachments was quietly dropped. Intended to galvanise the morale of the hard-pressed Red Army and emphasize patriotism, it had a generally detrimental effect and was not consistently implemented by commanders who viewed diverting troops to create blocking detachments as a waste of manpower. On 29 October 1944, blocking detachments were disbanded by Stalin's order No. 349 citing the changed situation at the front. essentially a piece of paper that said retreat is cringe

Recently just did this and puppeted Turkey, had no problems with them and were stable throughout my run. Only issue I did have following this guide is my airforce got absolutely smashed to begin with due to the starting debuffs, but problem was solved by building max static anti-air along the border while I fixed the debuffs through the focuses. You should have enough civs for this to not cause major delays
The way I did that achievement was by declaring war on Poland and then Germany as soon as possible (1936/37) and just rush them by having a number advantage and for the rest of the game sit AFK. Got some other achievements like Just Proper Gander and One Step Forward as well as the other AFK achievements like Trade Tycoon, Time is on our side, Master of war and such during the time I did absolutely nothing thanks to no one attacking me or anything
Not sure how, but I tried this and initially had all green bubbles until they broke one unit through in the north. Then everything broke down from there. Bunch of huge encirclements and decimated me
I've been recently trying to get this achievement but struggle with pushing out enough equipment to fully supply 2 army groups AND get all the medium tanks out even with 120+ civs and 90+ military factories since I goes really well at the start then the germans break my line and it all goes down from there
Every game my starting subs kill more divisions than my army does the entire defense phase. Assign them only to the two seas in the Baltic, put the 'shallow sea' admiral on them. If Romania joins early (they always do against me) use the Crimean subs in just the Black sea and maybe Agean. SO MANY troop convoys down. Like 100k casualties of total division loss, equipment and all, in just the first month.

I did exactly what you have done in this video. The german AI, however went to clever mode. It had very less troops guarding the northern flank but heavy and good troops in my south, and worst part, Hungary was also called in. They even started an offensive in Turkish border, as I am unable to hold them there as Soviet. Would try it again to complete several achievements in one run: 3 said in here, take Rome, capitulate Germany before allies take a core state, surrounded by puppets. Help me out with the templates you had used
I'm getting the same problem. I've run this scenario 3 times now and every time Hungary & Bulgaria have joined the Axis and swept through Romania and on to Moscow while I'm locked in battle with the Germans 😞. I've tried putting 2 full armies and land-forts on the Romanian border, but the combined force of Germany, Hungary and Bulgaria eventually smashes through. @Bitt3rSteel - how come that doesn't happen to you? Has the AI been changed recently?
Great video as always Bitt3r, and thanks again for working with Salad - you did almost as good of a job on that ad as you did defending the Motherland ;)
I've done that too, but I went as aggressively as possible, rushing NKVD Primacy, then boosting the US to be unable to do The Giant Wakes, sweeping through the Allies, Low Countries, France, and Poland, puppeting major naval powers then obliterating the Berlin-Rome Axis by invading from the Benelux. You are now unstoppable. The US is easily steamrolled because they don't have enough democracy support to mobilize, and congratulations, you have brought the Free World to its knees!.
I don’t recommend ignoring the focus tree path that reduces the paranoia. Unless you want 3 more purges. You use those focuses to reduced the paranoia of Stalin plus they give some decent buffs. DO NOT IGNORE THEM!!! The decisions are somewhat costly and in my opinion not worth the PP or loss of advisors, generals, and loss of effectiveness and XP. You can’t simply rush down the paranoia path. That’s why those other focuses are there. Use them strategically.
well the salad app... in the end your energy bill will be higher than what you get out of it i guess. not to mention the attrition your computer endures.

I accidently gave away the island to Japan because I didn't think about it, but Germany wouldn't declare aswell... maybe it's something in recent updates that they won't declare when they see many troops.
Just a general tip (this applies to all nations), make sure tanks are 8km/h from 1936-1942, then 10km/h afterwards. Also, support your 42w armored divisions with motoroized shock forces or use light mechanized divisions (the starting one is decent, slap on a high velocity cannon with tons of armor and speed so you dont get pierced) to support your armored corps. Also, CAS spam is not that OP (max you can do is 25 for an entire run) and send volunteers to china and help them, or id recommend puppeting Sinkiang, theyre really good when you play lategame and invade Japan. Otherwise, decent guide Bitt3rsteel, w guide other ones were trash.
I did this along with race for Germany, Don't Like Statistics, Pope Divisions and Proper-Gander all in one run. Played historically with the factory conversion strategy at the start. My industry went crazy by 1940 - I was building like 7 or more military factories on full speed at once. Managed to completely outproduce Germany in fighters and CAS. Didn't attack Turkey nor Romania. Grinded Zhukov to Ranger and Infantry leader in Finland. Also managed for the first time in a looooong time to win the Spanish civil war with Vatutin. Didn't really matter, because Spain didn't play a role in WW2. I only made flame tanks but with the latest medium tank chassis and gave them to my mountaineers and my 20 width Katyusha division which I used for pushing with Vasilevsky. Went with Superior Firepower doctrine both right sides. My infantry divisions were 10 width with support art, support rocket art, engineers, recon, support aa. With the crazy amount of civilian factories I had I was building a fort line from the Baltic sea to the Black sea. Had at least level 5 forts (didn't even take the Molotov line focus). Then just sat down and waited until I finished my focuses for improving the military - Lessons of war, etc... Also improved the airforce. From that point on I went on the offensive. A few major encirclements later Germany didn't stand a chance, though I did have to step up because UK took Italy and I had to rush to take Luxembourg and Elsass Lothringen because Germany did the focus for getting cores on them and you need to occupy them before they capitulate to get the Race for Germany achievement. In the peace conference I annexed Latium for the Pope Divisions achievement.
@@emin166 I haven't played in almost a year. Don't know what's changed in the game since then but I recall my strategy revolved around building very powerful defensive line on the very border. High level forts, entrenched infantry e.t.c. One thing that might help you mitigate casualties is Field Hospitals, but I didn't use them. I never let any of my divisions get encircled. This is key in regards to preventing casualties. My casualties start to go up during offense for obvious reasons. But even then I only push with tank divisions in areas that I know I can make a breakthrough followed up by a successful encirclement. I would rarely attack with infantry divisions unless I want to pin down either to prevent enemy reinforcements or a retreat from an encirclement.
36:00 Hungary is not in a faction because you eat Romania and broke Hungarian historical focus tree. Next time Try to save Romania as independent nation for example in Dobruja (small core near Bulgaria, if I m not wrong). That help Hungary go straight through focus tree to brown party and become a member of German Alliance. And of course sorry for my english. I know, grammar nazi is coming soon.
Turkey is easy. You forgot about naval invasions. Also take the first focus, do not wait. It yields PP. A few days after you complete it, start your justification. If you want to kill germany easy, justify on poland, kill poland, then justify germany. This rush strategy works because germany army weak in 1937. You will draw in the italians but you can still kill germany and get achievement. On SP you can ignore fighters and just build CAS. In a long game, it is better to build infrastructure before building civs and mils. You will have more factories later in the game. If you execute Chiang Kai-Shek China will join the allies and make for a weaker Japan.
Nice tips. However, in SP you can get away with not building air at all so that doesn't really mean anything. Plane for plane fighters are more versatile than CAS defensively (avoiding even getting TARGETED by enemy bombers) and offensively (much more efficient at achieving green air) so you should prioritize them before building anything else. Thankfully it doesn't take much to outproduce the vanilla AI so healthy balance between the two is more than achievable.
I executed Chiang Kai-Shek and it stopped the Chinese Faction from forming, but it didn't make japan join the allies. Instead Japan ate China bit by bit and became huge
Can you do a guide on "Siberian Tiger"? I already did all the achievements but this one is killing me, wouldn't mind some help from the pro like you :D
I like to justify on finland for the claimed territories (after ribbentrop-molotov) because it works the same, finland will still offer you territories after some time and they can't "concede to your demands". If finland accepts your demands via focus you just get karjala (instead of karjala and salla) and it will skip the winter war, which is terrible because you can use this war (timed just right) to get the war economy focus without the stability hit. By justifying a war goal you also can skip the "secure leningrad" focus and use these 70 days on another important focus. Really, it might cost more pp, but it's win/win
I wonder what the final division template you use as the Soviets, I'm sure you may have mentioned this in the video or in another but I do want to know what the layout is
@@Bitt3rSteel Ok I'll try that. I think I had that except with a logistics company and got smashed in the south. I had two army groups guarding the German border and one full army guarding the hungarian border and while my northern front held reasonably well, they just kept pushing through my defenses in the south. Also in Turkey I got destroyed by the Italians and Bulgarians despite guarding the naval bases so idk what I did wrong
At the start of the game you can go for poland too. I did that with my achivement run. After I completed all the purge events i rushed down for the comiterm part of the focus tree to send an ultimatum to turkey. At this time Romania still guarantees Turkey. Since the focus only give decisions to send referendums, the UK and France can't defend Turkey. With this opening (ofc I spammed a lot of airplanes too) Germany was very easy to defeat.
The hits keep coming! This was a goodie. Couple of things to consider, though. First off, It's not optimal to start building railroads right at game start. You can and should save that for as close to right before you declare your wars as possible. The earlier in the game it is, the more important your civilian factories building more civilian factories are. The investments compound on each other, positive and negative. Not a big deal at the end of the day, but minor inefficiencies add up! 9:10 If you're going tank, the anti-tank branch is JUST as important as the artillery one, if not more so. It has your medium cannons which were MAJORLY buffed soft attack and cost wise in the latest patch and are the only tank weapon that gives you a bonus to breakthrough for minimal cost in resources, at least when it comes to the first model. Naturally that branch also has your heavy and high velocity cannons for your TDs which SHOULD be included in your division (1 battalion) to insure your tanks have the piercing they need to deal with any armor the AI produces with ease. Artillery has horrible piercing and while you could say "just go around enemy tank divisions" supply doesn't always afford you that luxury. A city with a hub that needs taking isn't going to wait. I also use the TD to be the battalion that gives my division 30% of its armor as the highest armored unit, maxing it out with sloped, cast, skirts, etc. This gives it *two* incredibly important roles and because you literally only need 24 tanks per division, the resource and production costs are trivial. Now you might say I don't NEED the armor against the AI that doesn't really stack piercing but you use that armor to include more motorized in your division without being able to be pierced that effectively allows you to field more tank divisions. Yes, you heard that right. Motorized until an upgraded mechanized II for its speed and hardness. Don't even bother producing the first mechanized equipment although you should research it when you get the spare slot relatively quickly because it does increase the hardness of your motorized divisions significantly.
1. You start off with a construction penalty to civs. So I'd rather make a few railroads. 2. Medium canon is also in the artillery branch. 3. You don't need TDs. The AI still hasn't figured out what an armoured thrust is. It takes fewer of them to fill a division, and is economical. But not required.
@@Bitt3rSteel Fair enough. Although you could invest that into infrastructure instead in your states with high slots! I didn't know that! You're still missing out on the high velocity and heavy cannons, however. But it's better than not to have a TD, though. Yes, the AI is terrible at managing tanks, but it only takes one unpierceable one in the right spot to jam you up. Combined you get the efficiency of needing fewer tanks overall, piercing and the second role I mentioned as your designated armored unit to maximize the 30% bonus to your division. That means you don't need the sloped armor on your medium tanks! Not bad if I do say so myself for some not overwhelming research investment.
@[Mob Inc.] Robert technically in single player you don't need tanks either, the AI is just braindead enough to be neutered with CAS and taken with infantry.
@[Mob Inc.] Robert You need AA much less if you're a major with a competent air force and non-pacific theater navy. Like a lot of things in the game AT makes your life easier for the reasons I laid out and a few more.
The best way to achieve this: 1) put a full-sized tank volunteer (1 full division with full batallions) in Denmark, and let it defend Copenhagen 2) Germans would never win against it, so the tank would be invincible (however due to some initial losses during the battle, the experience would not go up easily) 3) As long as Denmark is alive, the Germans would never strike against us. I tested in until 1944, but they never strike us. 4) So, you can start your war as you are fully ready. Your 1K divisions would wipe out all Germans if you want.
I tried it 5 times but I just can't. First of all i don't understand how can you make that big incirclement on romania, and when germany declares war or me i use same infantry template as you do but they still fucking push
Maybe different now in 2024, but I just booted up Soviets for the first time to get achievements and it’s super easy to get The Revolution Triumphant, Not a step back, One Step Forward, and We don’t really like statistics. As USSR just go relatively historic straight into mils and focus on infantry (guns/arty/aa/support, but mostly guns/arty). Organize the army with 4 infantry armies and 1 tank/cav army. Ignore the NKVD docs they don’t matter. Justify in Poland as soon as possible, then justify on Germany as soon as possible after that. Kind of fiddle around until Poland war is ready (setup existing air I just put attached it to the armies) and you can battle plan through them easily. IMPORTANT: don’t cap Poland until after declaring on the Germans. If you peace out Poland before starting the war on Germany you won’t get One Step Forward. Declare on Germany, then take Poland’s last VPs and push on through Germany. Once they capitulate puppet Germany now you should have Revolution, Statistics, One Step Forward all in 1938. Now you should be able to just 5 speed and do whatever until 1945 to get no step back. With this setup you can also easily get The Soviet Onion, and The Pope achievements with some late game grinding. I just industry boomed (Soviets can scale harder than any other country purely because of the amount of building slots) until NSB then went world conquest mode
Bittersteel, when playing as sovjet union, do you also get super hyped when "katyusha" kicks in when defending against Germany? :D or do you play without ingame music?
Way better to just early war against poland, create Belarus, Ukraine, and Danzig area puppets and annex the rest. Build level 7 forts on border with Romania for both fort and river crossing invincibility. Then do the same on the river to the east of Warsaw. That way even if you lose the fight in Poland against Germany, they still cannot attack through your puppets as you don't call them in.

This isn't common knowledge?

42:41 So just wanted to say how crushing of an encirclement that was, a division contains around 6,000-25,000 soldiers and that was an encirclement of 51 of them, so the average best outcome would be 306,000 captured/killed and the average worst would be *1.27 million* soldiers captured/killed.

After-action report! Finally did this, with some changes:

Lovely guide, thank you BitterSteel, once again on point!
I just finished my campaign following your tutorial. It worked great!
I like how every start of bittersteel ussr run is like: an army on romania and turkey

I cant do dont like statistics I always lose a lot of men in the defense against germany. Can you explain how you do it?

@Bitt3rSteel what was the template for the infantry and the armor divisions?
I'm curious about this as well, it seems like the INF is 30 width so maybe 9/4? Armor I have not clue on.
@@MundaneThingsBackwards Does anyone else use the move industry focus to effectively construct infinite industry in Moscow?
@[Mob Inc.] Robert technically in single player you don't need tanks either, the AI is just braindead enough to be neutered with CAS and taken with infantry.
@[Mob Inc.] Robert You need AA much less if you're a major with a competent air force and non-pacific theater navy. Like a lot of things in the game AT makes your life easier for the reasons I laid out and a few more.
30:34 that random whatsapp webclient noise making me paranoid that I have it open background and someone sent me a message
Bittersteel's gonna jack these guys up as soon as he can.
What was the final template for the infantry and the tanks? Also how did you choose to design the tanks? Thanks
Or even what was his 1941 template
Me who has been trying for months and keeps losing to German: Write that down, write that down!
This, this does put a smile on OUR face
The best way to achieve this:
1) put a full-sized tank volunteer (1 full division with full batallions) in Denmark, and let it defend Copenhagen
2) Germans would never win against it, so the tank would be invincible (however due to some initial losses during the battle, the experience would not go up easily)
3) As long as Denmark is alive, the Germans would never strike against us. I tested in until 1944, but they never strike us.
4) So, you can start your war as you are fully ready. Your 1K divisions would wipe out all Germans if you want.
Merry Christmas and a happy holidays to yall
Glad youre getting sponsors bro
I tried it 5 times but I just can't. First of all i don't understand how can you make that big incirclement on romania, and when germany declares war or me i use same infantry template as you do but they still fucking push
Where does he show the end game division templates?
fire tanks in infantry, 20 solid tanks, click battle plan, PROFIT

When does it kick in?
Paradox needs to fix the peace deals at some point.
Achieved using 1.11.13. Excellent job Bitt3r. Thank you.
I got hearts of iron 4 and I have been trying so hard to learn it this is the video I will now look at this has taught me more than any other video on how to play this game by far
