How to Flush Radiator Coolant at Home | Things you Should Know Before Doing this

I recently performed a coolant change on my customer Kawasaki Ninja 300 using Wurth Concentrate coolant. First, I drained the old coolant from the radiator and reservoir, ensuring the system was completely empty. Then, I flushed the cooling system with distilled water to remove any residues. After securing the drain bolt, I mixed the Wurth Concentrate coolant with distilled water at a 1:3 ratio, as per the manufacturer's instructions. I filled the radiator with the new coolant mixture, ensuring no air bubbles were trapped, and topped off the reservoir. The bike now runs smoothly, maintaining optimal temperatures even in hot weather.
Changing the coolant in your Kawasaki Ninja 300 is a crucial part of regular maintenance, especially to prevent overheating during hot weather. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you change the coolant, flush the old coolant out, and ensure your bike runs smoothly.
Things to Know Before You Start
Coolant Type: Ensure you have the correct type of coolant for your Ninja 300. Refer to the owner's manual for specifications. Typically, a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol-based antifreeze and distilled water is used.
Tools and Supplies:
New coolant
Distilled water
Drain pan/ bottle
Funnel
Screwdriver
Pliers
Gloves and safety glasses
Shop rags
Safety Precautions:
Make sure the engine is cool before starting to avoid burns.
Work in a well-ventilated area.
Dispose of the old coolant properly as it is toxic and harmful to the environment.
Step-by-Step Coolant Change
1. Preparation
- Place the bike on a stable stand.
- Remove the lower fairings to access the coolant drain bolt and radiator cap.
2. Draining the Old Coolant
- Place a drain pan under the coolant drain bolt located at the bottom of the water pump cover.
- Open the radiator cap to allow air in, which helps the coolant to drain out smoothly.
- Remove the drain bolt and let the coolant drain completely. You may need to tilt the bike slightly to get all the old coolant out.
- Don’t forget to drain the coolant from the reservoir tank as well by removing the reservoir tank cap and tilting the bike to empty it.
3. Flushing the Cooling System
- Reinstall the drain bolt securely.
- Fill the radiator with distilled water.
- Run the engine for a few minutes with the radiator cap off to circulate the water and flush out any remaining coolant.
- Turn off the engine and let it cool, then drain the water by removing the drain bolt again.
- Repeat the flushing process until the water draining out is clear.
4. Refilling with New Coolant
- Reinstall the drain bolt securely after the final flush.
- Use a funnel
