    Thanks for the in depth review boss man! I’m a lazy bitcoiner that knows he should be running a node, knows he should be coin joining, knows he should have a multi sig storage set up and knows he should at least have an air gapped storage solution but doesn’t! I struggle a lot with the tech side of being a freak and a pleb but fully understand the benefits of privacy and sovereignty. I think this product bridges the gap nicely. Love your channel man! You are one of the good guys in this space :)
    Would love to see a video on ‘best practices’ for using a mobile device as your primary and only way to acquire, send, receive and hodl BTC.
    Thanks for the awesome video :)

      Bilbo my friend, thank YOU for tuning in and for the kind words. I think you do yourself a slight disservice by missing the most important fact of all - you're a bitcoiner 😉
      Once I started thinking of my overall setup as an ongoing process vs. this big 1-time thing, it became easier to bite small chunks off to knock out. Set yourself some small incremental goals and take your time. Maybe even find a fellow friend or pleb in a similar situation and agree on goals so you have accountability.
      I definitely agree that some combination of Sparrow or Wasabi and Foundation Devices or Coldcard is going to get you a lot of the way there. I'd say do that first and then move on to running your node, etc.
      Great suggestion - it's going on the list! I've definitely been meaning to do more on mobile.
      Cheers again sir 🤙

      @@IanMajor Hi Ian :) Thanks for replying mate! I’ve taken your advice and I’ve just bought a cold card hardware wallet with all the trimmings (I’m a tight ass and used the extra coin saved on some open dimes and coin kite swag!) . I’ll check out more of your videos to decide on sparrow, blue or wasabi to use with the bad boy :) It was my first online purchase with BTC as well! Thanks for the guidance mate 🇦🇺🤠!

      Hard to say - I'm not convinced one is clearly superior to the other. There are some good considerations here if you want to take a look: supraoracles.com/academy/what-is-an-air-gapped-wallet/#specific-vulnerabilities

    Great tutorial, man! Is it better to have for example 2 HW with 2 different passwords or have 2 HW for the 1 wallet (same passwords)? I guess it’s safer to divide your funds than have them in 1 HW? All of these cool wallets! 🤣

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  Рік тому +1

      Are you asking about the merits of a 2-of-2 multisig vs. having funds split across 2 separate HW's? I think separate passwords for the different HW's would help if possible. I personally have my long-term savings split across two different HW's. Multisig with different HW vendors is another greatt option

    guys, what do you usually do to those psbt files that were done previously? Do you remove them manually or just leave them there? If you're gonna leave them there, then how does your hard wallet know which psbt to sign for the future?

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  2 роки тому

      Good question Jason. I manually remove them periodically to avoid having too many there to sift through. Each hardware wallet that supports PSBTs should present you with a list of PSBT files (if there are more than one) for you to choose from. You can also always manually check to ensure unique naming for the most recently generated one before taking the microSD out of your computer.
      Keep in mind too PSBT data conveyed through QR codes won't face this issue since it's all done in "real time".

    Hey Ian! Another question from me haha. By the way, you’re my favorite crypto channel! I’m going to buy a hardware wallet soon that has to be air gapped. I was curious how you would rank the Keystone Pro, Foundation Passport, and Cold Card from least favorite to most favorite based on your opinion? I’m having a hard time picking between the three.

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  2 роки тому +2

      I appreciate the support! Thrilled you're getting value out of the content.
      I unfortunately can't speak from personal experience on Keystone Pro (has been on my list though), and it's extraordinarily difficult to choose a favorite between Passport and Coldcard 😂
      You really can't go wrong with either of them, - they're both fantastic. But I think I'd have to give the slight edge to Passport esp. their batch 2 design (foundationdevices.com/passport/) with accompanying Envoy mobile app which gives you an easy watch-only wallet on your phone and enables easy setup. I think that's a real differentiator. Please note though that batch 2 + Envoy are only coming out this month and next due to hardware delays - I'll definitely be doing a tutorial on this once I receive mine.

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  2 роки тому +1

      It's always a consideration, but I've been happy with mine thus far and also pleased to see folks in the community who have either become affiliated with them or directly contribute to firmware code development in the case of someone like Luke Childs from Umbrel. Keep in mind they forked Coldcard's code which is some of the most battle-tested and robust in the industry. I'd recommend checking out their README if you haven't already and of course DYOR and make the decision you think is best! github.com/Foundation-Devices/passport-firmware

    What is the reasoning for pairing with a hot wallet? Can’t it just be used on its own?

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  2 роки тому

      Good question. Certain hardware wallets such as Foundation Devices and the Coldcard by design do not have their own software interface (which differs vs. something like Ledger which has Ledger Live). I think this is largely a decision to limit attack surface and focus exclusively on the hardware - who knows maybe we'll see that change in the future. But keep in mind your private keys never leave the hardware wallet - you're just importing the extended public key into a software wallet, so I'd argue it's not a "hot" wallet per se (particularly if you're using an airgapped device like this one) as that distinction depends on where the private keys are stored.
      Hope that helps / makes sense!

    • @jhf53872
      @jhf53872 2 роки тому

      Thanks a bunch for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it👍! I guess my next question then is a software wallet required to use the Passport? If I create a wallet on Passport, don’t pair it with anything, and then send btc to the Passport wallet using QR codes, what happens?

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  2 роки тому

      @@jhf53872 Of course! That's correct that you will need to pair it with a software wallet to be able to use. You can find a full list of supported wallets here: docs.foundationdevices.com/user-manual/software-wallets
      Think of your passport device as an offline device for signing transactions. Any bitcoin you send to addresses generated by your passport keys will be on the bitcoin blockchain, and so the software wallet is then the way to view your balances and receive funds, and then the physical device itself is for signing trxns and sending funds.

    • @jhf53872
      @jhf53872 2 роки тому

      Ok I think I got it, to receive btc you could use just the device itself, but to check balances or to send btc, you would need to pair it with a software wallet. Sparrow looks great, I’ll have to check it out!

    This is why the majority of people don’t own Bitcoin. It’s too much. Too complicated. This is what needs to be solved for. Imagine your parents doing this. Don’t get me wrong. This is cool and I could do this but most can’t, won’t and will be intimidated. Tangem appears to be a simple solution.

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  7 місяців тому +1

      My hope is UX gets materially better over time but I agree the reality is that most will likely only ever hold with a custodian for this and other reasons.
      It’s definitely possible with enough motivation: one of my consulting clients is in his late 60s and not at all technical, yet we were able to get his own node running (something he largely did himself), get it connected to Sparrow wallet, and pair his Coldcard with Sparrow. Obviously not representative of the broader population.
      I’ve heard a number of folks comment about Tangem - will look into it. Looks like the Arculus?

    I tried scanning my blockstream jade’s qr with my macbook pro cam and had the exact same issue. it’s really disappointing. one workaround is to use your smartphone as your laptop’s camera through special software, but i’m sure that adds to security risk. 🫤

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  Рік тому

      Yea frustrating! Good point on that potential workaround. I think if I was moving funds sufficiently frequently I'd pursue something like that, but for now microSDs are fine for me given this is really for my long-term savings
