"Still pictures are boring": YES and NO. I hate when UA-camrs show paintings (art) that are always flowing, moving, jumping. Let the audience to enjoy what the artist created! I still gave you big LIKE for the video, because it is useful. Thanks!
My biggest complaint is those whose photos never stand still. Instead of studying the composition, the "fine art" of the picture, you get these movements picture after picture so that you are actually looking at the darn animation rather than studying the intent of the photographer. Like transitions, movement of the frame should be limited and used sparingly - and for effect only.
We all have our likes. I'm a commercial photographer and these types of movements add a tad of pizzazz to an Instagram page, that for me, attracts more clients.
@@harrisongould9460 - And also as a pro photographer (Commercial, Boudoir and Glamor) I like to concentrate on the quality and artistic elements of the photographs. You know, the old essentials of Capture the eye, retain the eye, and convey the message. Hard to do with bouncing and continuous movement. But I have to admit it's an excellent way to detract, hide quality if it is poor, and to mask possible poor composition and image narration. But then, I don't use Instagram, TikTok or have any need of the social media. Quality speaks for itself and also attracts clients. We all have our own styles and taste. As long as it works well for you, go for it. Take care, and keep the videos coming....
Totally agree with you.. it can be so annoying seeing a stills photo moving. There's a difference between stills and videos unfortunately youtubers (amateurs) blur the line.. just imagine watching the news and Foxs or ABC keep spinning the stills... now if you want to setup a stills slideshow then make it a video of it's own and if you're going to reference a photo, I think the safest bet it to keep stills Still..
You continue to upload "best in class" content. Thank you for your commitment, dedication and expertise. Your tutorials are making a positive impact on so many and on behalf of the UA-cam community....THANK YOU!
Good stuff, dude. I’ve always been a kind of tinker and experiment kind of editor, but I learned more in your 15 minute tutorial than I ever would have discovered tinkering around on my own.
Wow this tutorial took me from amateur closer to intermediate. love how he covers the different ways and not just one simple way. Liked and Subscribed.
I really feel like I have learned something! Thank you. Excellent video and a keeper, for my playlist. There are many youtubers out there who teach Davinci lessons but your way of doing it is simply outstanding!
SOLID video. Thanks Jay. I really like the blur and color transition. The drop shadow changing with the zoom was pretty sweet as well though. I appreciate the goodness!
This is great information. THANK YOU for taking the time to share this with us all. Do you by any chance how to tell what images you have used un your timeline when making a slide show? There is a red line that appears at the bottom of the videos in the bins but not the images. I find it confusing knowing what images Ive used and what images I haven't used. Thanks again
The portrait of the girl. I wonder if you can zoom only the portrait and not the blur background at the same time? If you can I think that would be a better effect.
Great job Jay, my biggest peeves is someone who makes a video on color grading and have a black person as a model, his face is black how many shades of black can you have and also a video where the music or intro is 15 decibel's above the voice when he finally comes on and you have to run and adjust the volume, jmho
When I tried to use the last tip, Lens Blur, I found out it was only available on the Resolve Studio version, not the free version. Bummer. That was the one I wanted to try most. Other than that, great tips and very informative.
I used position key frame to change position of an image but when i press play the movement is not smooch, there's a minor jitter. Just to check i even rendered out the portion of that particular clip stil the jitter remains. How to make it smooch plz help Thanks
Thanks for this tutorial, Jay! I'm noticing a significant drop off in color quality when I upload my still images (jpg) to Davinci Resolve 18. The greens are less green, reds are less red. The images just looks so much more bland than what they really are. Is there something I can do when uploading them into Davinci Resolve to keep the original color quality? I appreciate your time! Thx.
I’ve honestly never noticed that before. I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do when uploading, but maybe you can boost the saturation and contrast in the color page?
Thanks,@@JayLippman. I'll have to try that. I uploaded jpg, tiff, png, and all look much duller than actual images. It did keep the color quality when I loaded a PSD file, so maybe that will be my workaround until I figure another way. Thanks for your time/expertise!
Great video. I hadn’t heard about the compressor before, so great tip. I use stills as pic in pic and like to have a border. I struggled until I heard about the dve effect - game changer for me. One question, how much do you think it is possible to increase zoom on an image before it loses significant definition. My images are around 5MB. You only changed the zoom by tiny amounts. Thanks.
Just like in video, it really depends on the original resolution of the photo. The larger it is compared to the timeline resolution, the more you'll be able to zoom in. Hope that helps!
Strange. I'm getting rainbow colors all around the edges of all of my photos. It showed up after I clicked on transform to zoom in and out. Any thoughts as to how to correct it?
The fact that it is still lets the viewer take a better look... and such, i could say, the black eyebrows stand out compared to the rest of the photo, also, the portrait may benefit from an eye light to add some sparkles... and remove shadows... as from what it looks right now it made me wonder if there's a hitting mark under her right eye...
Good to see you are keeping up with your output considering you are probably busier now. Until near the end, I thought you had forgotten dynamic zoom. Also if people want a master example of the use of photos in motion any Ken Burns documentary shows all the techniques that are possible. Ken Burns is so famous for those techniques that a lot of software or tutorials tend to call it the "Ken Burns Effect". The lens blur thing could also have a gradient mask applied to it and give the photo a depth of field type effect. But I think that would require going to the color tab, which is not the idea in your tutorial. ( All done from the edit page ). I have seen Premiere users complain that there is no mask functionality on the edit page in resolve. You would think that would be a welcome addition to the edit page for editors. When are your live streams coming back? Good stuff Jay, Keep it up.
Haha I batch recorded a bunch of stuff before the baby came so I would have videos coming out while I was taking a break. Ken Burns is amazing! I should have done some SEO research on that before I titled this lol. Having some sort of masking capability would be nice in the edit page, but honestly with my workflow I dont really miss it until I want to do some layering of video clips, which isn't all that often. Live streams are coming back soon! I'm aiming for next week, but it all depends on whats going on with the baby.
Ive been asking facebook pages, and commenting in youtube creators videos trying to find out how to do this for literally a year. i didnt even know how to phrase the question to find out
The blank fill is amazing. I had to create 3 tracks to simulate the effect, before I saw this video. Thanks! Note: You never use Dynamic Zoom. I find it much more easier than keying zoom
As someone who's new to Davinci, this is exactly the video I was looking for! Perfect pacing, explanations, and I like how all these of effects are classy! I'm creating a wedding venue tour video and I didn't want any of the photo effects to be cheesy.
Great Video presentation. Thanks. Not to much information to absorb in one go. I'd like to suggest that you don't need to talk all the time there is a gap. Silence can be very useful to allow the viewer to think their own thought about what you are doing.
By biggest complaint is annoying background audio that is too loud as well as being pointless unless you are one of the *they taught me this at editing school" brigade
While these are great tips to make things a little more interesting, I see people going way too far with this on Photography channels, like the pan, when I JUST WANT TO SEE AND OBSERVE THE PHOTO. not try track a certain spot because it's panning constantly. Gives us headache rather than enjoying the image. So people please use this sparingly, especially if you want people to enjoy your image. Seen the blur thing done badly too, where it takes way too long and you don't get to see the full image long enough. I swear some people don't actually watch their own videos. Nice video btw.
LOL I agree. I think if you're going to use this in a photography video, I would do the drop shadow on an off white background, and maybe a SLIGHT dynamic zoom. No pans though. Pans drive me crazy when I just want to see the photo.
Well everybody there own taste ... 😊 But i absolutely hate those blacking fills { 2nd example } You see them a lot on tik tok and portret movies on youtube. For me they are distracting espacially when both fill and photo or movie are moving. I bet i'm not the only one.. but people are doing it often because they can, it is a hype or the video maker likes it ... So what whould you advise if you like to use images but not like to move them but stil draw attention to them? I guess there should be other methods too right ? Keep them posting ... 😊 👍
There are for sure ways to put photos in videos, not have them move, and still find them interesting. One of the best ways is to use some sort of textured background behind the photo and a drop shadow effect on the photo layer.

Hey Dean! There actually is a Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter on my lens, because I find that my lens is a little bit too sharp for my liking (great for photography though). As for the color grade, a lot of that is lighting, and it's done to add depth because the wall is basically the same color as my skin, and it's a small space. Without it everything looks super flat. I'm open to suggestions though. I'm getting a little tired of this particular look myself lol.

Nice tips!. On the shadow/zoom, I would also keyframe the shadow opacity to show it going from lighter to darker. Gives it an extra realism.😎
Nice tips Jay, thanks for sharing!

Thanks bro, wanted to find how to use blanking fill but didn't even know what to call it. solid tutorial
