I want to marry this film. I've been watching it for years. I think we're ready.
Divorced?
@@ate5ive866 Taking some time apart...
Wow, yes! For me it has shaped my life since I first watched it in the last year of college... It's been a long lasting loving relationship :) I felt so high when I got out of the movie theatre... High on ideas, dreams...
@@thecorso Aww yeah, I can totally relate! My actual dream life was also supercharged around the time I first discovered this film, which I think was the beginning of college for me :)
@@thecorso That is so cool that you got to see it in theater!!
This movie is truly perfect. Rearranged my life so much. It's like an answer to all my questions, yet brings twice as much to replace them. Masterpiece... masterpiece.
it sounds like lightweight metaphysique for 105IQ midwits

Yea was just thinking about how much I love watching this movie on shrooms hahaha the best

Such a trip. Ironically this is the realest film I've ever seen.
hi :)
TRUTH
Watch 'Out of the Shadows' movie
Well put!
My mom bought me this movie when I was in elementary school and watched the hole thing
Just wanted to say, this movie will always be my favorite. I've seen it countless times and each time I feel I've grown even more as a human being. When you're feeling weird and alone, watch this and feel relief. We steady "wakin up" round these parts
Lets watch it together sarah
She even likes amtrac. Shes must be something else
Ever heard of the band kings kaleidoscope? Ur name made me think of them nice and different sounding band don't be gettin' scared off by them being a Christian band very talented. I was here to check out this trailer off recommendation and your comment seemed solid as well and I'll be watching this very soon stoked for it
@@johnchurch2436 I've never heard of them but I'll check them out!
I am not promoting this but just saying it... the first time I watched this I was knee deep into a mushroom trip and it blew my mind. It' was stuck on my mind for weeks afterwards. I still have this movie well embedded into my psyche. Awesome movie!!
Jonathan Wright shrooms are awesome
I saw this film as child staying home from school sick. Even back then it impacted me. I loved the art, the story. It was all amazing. I couldn’t remember the name until Facebook memories showed me a status I posted 15 years ago!
I've been continually watching this movie for years and years, and it has always given me this strange but intriguing feeling and state of mind that I can't quite pinpoint. Since I was 16 I must have watch this film 30+ times. The soundtrack alone gives me feelings stronger than I've felt from almost anything else. I absolutely adore Waking Life and will continue to watch it until I'm in an end-of-life dream state like the protagonist.
Yes, I watch it and remind myself of true north.
where to watch this though?
This movie changed my life.
2023 and it's still the one.
It's not everyday when someone or something reminds you about what you truly want. This movie does exactly that.
This is such a great movie. I know some will dismiss it out of hand because of the animation style, which sucks for them because it's such enlightening bleeding good film.
Besides the script that really is the best of the movie, imho the animation style is the best choice to fit with the movie . Who could say it sucks?? Amazing film, just saw it yesterday and it went straight to my top 10 hall of fame movies!!
tripledoer
It seems sort of pseudo intellectual to me, like city boys with too much time on their hands would dig it.
MotesYT Or maybe it's just that those with too many muddling distractions wouldn't understand?
MotesYT
Respect your opinion, but do not share it at all. There are great insights in this movie imho. Good day!!
Fgermay You could say that the shifting animation matches with the concept of walking through a waking dream, or dreaming through a walking life. With each person, there is a shift in the art style, like their art style is them and they make their own personal life and reality (or perception therefore of).
This movie was very intellectually stimulating

Time to have a Holy Moment
You 24 now?
This movie marked me very deeply. It kind of changed my views about the world.
+Senior Adrian I guess that's what happens when you are first faced with definitions of terms you always assumed were predefined. Undefined love is much more convenient as it cannot be "proven wrong" and so long as it remains unquestioned, appearances are maintained.
If someone doesn't know why they love someone else there is an easy explanation for it, as Aristotle pointed out, it is yourself, or the ideal of yourself that you love in others. You will love people who are what you wish you were, share your strengths OR weaknesses but in the end, it is what makes you who you are that you love in others, not them... our own perspective of our world wouldn't allow it any other ways because it would require you to be able to completely remove yourself from yourself to truly love someone else.
+JimmyRonzio42 What? That's some cockamamie tripe. A real philosopher acknowledges multiple ideologies and decides which one fits their worldview. They don't try to treat it like it's the singular truth for everyone. That's the entire point of philosophy. Love, like everything else in a relative world, is what you make it. Love, meaning, identity, morality all fall to you to sculpt how you see them or fall to you to make the decision of whether or not you accept society's definitions for these things.
And for you to come on here and make presumptions about this person's altered worldviews with your own preconceived notions, touting them as facts, is pretentious.
That is absurd, sir. You can love a person for whatever reason you CHOOSE to love them, whether that be they are everything you are or everything you are not or whatever your requisites for love are. Don't slander Aristotle's word by slinging it like it's the gospel.
Phail Munsta
Actually, a "real philosopher" would start by using logic so you can't really start your "counter argument" by saying they acknowledge the positions they see fit and then continue with, but your position I don't see fit so it's invalid... that's contradictory...
You might wanna read the book he wrote about the nature of the "soul", or more accurately his attempt to describe its "essence" before you start accusing me of "slander".
Also, what kind of gospel starts with "I guess this happened..." ? You can convince yourself of whatever reasons why you love someone, you still haven't refute it isn't through self-association that you are doing so.
So tell me, what is your reason, that isn't from yourself, nor about yourself, as to why you love one of your close ones? Or maybe I could ask differently, If we can agree (which I will assume for now) that your love for your wife is different from your wife's love to you, we can already agree that love in an individualist perception, not a shared emotion. It still remains 2 one-ways and will always be so because emotions can be expressed and/or perceived but nobody will ever know the love (or hate) you have for them.

wow, this comment went right under the wrong post
I just watched this movie. It was amazing! I am completely speechless. I have been lucid dreaming since I was a kid and lately I got really interested in it and want to use it more and more, go deeper and explore myself more and stuff. It took me a while to get used to the style of the animation, it was a bit trippy, but the second half was so dynamic and interesting. It left me full of impressions, but I can't really put it into words. It's one of those overwhelming life moments. Anyone else know what I mean?
Rosalindxxxxxx About Lucid Dreaming? Oh, hell yeah!
It let's you do whatever the fudge you want in your dreams, only if you got to know you are really dreaming. The wonderful side of this is you know that you are dream and it's not real. So you could live in an ideal world. :-)
I've also experienced many good experiences in Lucid Dreams! :-)
+Rosalindxxxxxx I loved this movie so much, but at the same time I feel so overwhelmed as well. I wish someone would've told me all of this before. It's so much information that it woke me up literally and now I am hungry for more knowledge and my own enlightenment. I'm thinking like "wow this is too much" but at the same time I'm like, "I'm 20 years old, I wish I could've known this sooner". I wanna know more and more and more about the purpose of life and why we came here and what we came to do.
+Diana Medellin If you're interested in lucid dreaming and this kind of stuff, I would highly recommend reading Lucid dreaming or Dreams of awakening by Charlie Morley. He is a young, briliant teacher of lucid dreaming and does retreats and workshops all over the world. I know what you mean by hunger for knowledge and enlightenment. I am also 20 years old and I am interested in spiritual stuff and psychology. It can all get a bit overwhelming. Also, I have had two beers, but life is awesome. I don't know.

this movie taught me to lucid dream
I just did a project on how much this movie changed the way I see and experience life. By far my favorite film.
Wow, this movie on mushrooms was probably THE most trippy experience in my life so far... just WOW!
So I should watch this while on shrooms ?
@@damianclark9732 or acid tbh
@@damianclark9732 My initial watching of Waking Life was sober. But I watched it under the influenced of a psychedelic during at least one of my later viewings. I definitely recommend watching it sober first and under a psychedelic afterwards. The psychedelic adds something truly unique to the experience, but you're likely to appreciate it more if you can compare with your initial viewing...
'are you a dreamer?'
woa I have to see this movie
I watched A Scanner Darkly and was obsessed with it, then a friend told me it reminded him of Waking Life, I decided to watch it, this movie opened my mind just that little bit more to try lucid dreaming....this movie changed my life.
I watch this every once in a while to remind me to put things in the right perspective.
As someone who lucid dreams a lot this movie was profound and terrifying
What tips could you give me for lucid dreaming? I used to do it as a kid a lot, now I try to as much as I can but it hardly happens
@@mxttcxrter honestly for me the fear of having it happen induces it. I don’t enjoy it because I consistently wake up within the dream just like in the film. And I don’t have great control over what’s happening.
It became more common once I recognized cues that happen in a dream. Like me being unable to text or the landscape of my place being wildly different.
Edit also sleeping during the day where my sleep is lighter makes it happen more
the world needs to see this together
" I go salsa dancing with my confusion"--good stuff!
For all those who have not seen it or perhaps you'd like to see it again, they put it back on Netflix.
i watched this for the first time last night before bed, it was such a good movie that at the end i got up and tested my lights
still my fave movie 20 years later
Lucid dreaming is the most underrated skill anyone can learn and one of the most practical as well yet nobody talks about it.
Nobody talks about their dreams anymore
The world is boring because people have lost touch with their dreams. Most people don't understand how profound and meaningful these experiences can be
It only happened one time when I was aware that I am in a dream, but somehow that never happened again.
movies like this make me SOOO happy.
i love to talk bout this type of stuff
Not only one of the most beautiful movies to look at EVER. But also makes you think about things in an interesting and entertaining manner. A true masterpiece!
I watched a part of this in my philosophy class, and I'm watching the entire movie right now. Simply Amazing.
Best movie I have ever seen, hands down. I wish there were more like this.
A thousand years is but an instant.
There’s nothing new, nothing different; same pattern over and over. The same clouds, same music, the same things I felt an hour or an eternity ago. There’s nothing here for me now, nothing at all.
Now I remember, this happened to me before. This is why I left.
You have begun to find your answers. Although it will seem difficult the rewards will be great. Exercise your human mind as fully as possible knowing that it is only an exercise. Build beautiful artifacts, solve problems, explore the secrets of the physical universe, savor the input from all the senses, filled with joy and sorrow and laughter, empathy, compassion, and tuck these emotional memories in your travel bag.
I remember where I came from, and how I became human, why I hung around, and now my final departure’s scheduled:
This way out, escaping velocity.
Not just eternity, but
Infinity.
It’s from the movie...
Haha, now you have to go watch it :P

ima take 12g of shrooms for this
This movie was great, it's like your actually watching a dream with all it's depth, nonlinear plot, and just plain otherworldliness. I personally loves the parts about existentialism and the one guys rant about the evolution revolution and mans impending transhumanist awaking.
All of you who have watched this as well are my type of people
one of the greatest artistic films ever created imo
Best movie I've been watching my entire life , should be a movie every person should have seen at least once in a lifetime , very thought inspiring ,and delivers lots of conversation material , a shame such movies don't get a lot of attention , reality tv seems alot more "in" these days , people don't appreciate the message movies like waking life are trying to bring to people , too busy being a working robot , buying shit they dont need etc. , our society is just plain silly and sad.
I thought I was awake, and consciously living my life. And then I watched this film and more windows and doors opened up. I don't look at anything the same, too. I totally agree with your post!
Cool I like the part when he says are you a dreamer? haha I feel like that when I walk the streets with some people.
I think most people just overhype something they really don't understand, but seems to be true because of complex wording. This movie was interesting, but for the first 50min it all just sounded like mental masturbation or vomiting of ideas, something very disconnected (maybe because dreams can be like that). It had some interesting topics like the collective unconscious and Phillip Dick story, for me it was it, but it probably helped people that aren't used to questioning and thinking to start looking for answers on what's life.
This movie literally predicted the appearance of the AIs as we know it now. It's way far from being just a mental masturbation. I would even define this as the most practical philosophical advice ever made.
People did the same thing with Interstellar, it spew some concepts that were new to them and they were instantly amazed by the movie.
@@senka369 Actually, a couple weeks later, and after some events, I have a different idea of arts in general, and especially movies like this. Can't avoid to see it as another attempt of big media to manipulate certain niches. But it's not easy to understand why this is that way.
The soundtrack is worth getting as well. It is strange mixture of classical and tango music. Very beautiful and very dreamy and is a sountrack that can stand alone without the accompanying images. It's good walking music to have on one's Ipod when you want to feel little weird and detached---but in a good way.
The sound track itself is amazing let alone the movie.
Imagine if this trailer was released today. I bet its art style would get a lot of accusations of not being real.
This movie really sums up the turn of the century so well.
I'm awake!!!! This movie was amazing, its one to own. So much food for the conscious mind to digest and then you feel alive, full, and happy! Ready to create my reality with my eyes, heart and mind wide open.
This may have been the best film I have every seen. A true masterpiece....an inspiration if you will.
SPOT ON 5/5
this movie is a trip
Me entering the comment section 14 years later damn it’s a ghost town here 😅 this movie is a lsd masterpiece 😊 definitely watch while high
I first saw this movie on cable in 2003 when I was 10 years old, blew my freaking mind! I've loved it ever sinvce
This movie completely dazzled me. So much depth and intelligence! And I don't claim to understand it all... but this was the most trippy, consciousness-altering movie I've ever seen and it is among my top five favorites ever.
man just got done watching this movie for the first time and I gotta say such an amazing Movie made me think and made me wanna float and fly in my own dreams now it makes me feel like a better person.
This movie is outstanding. I've been trying to find many answers for a while and this movie seems to have come to my attention at the perfect timing. 10/10
One of my all-time favourite movies. I love movies that make me think and just baffle me.
If we lived in a world of intellectuals then movies like this one would be a very common way to express things that provide awe and inspiring moments of imagination and creativity. I believe that minus all of the profit assumptions vs. costs for production, it is possible to market films that have a lasting impact on generations (think Star Wars, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc). Unfortunately, people like Paul Feig and Amy Pascal are on a campaign to undermine the inspirational value of entertainment that is done properly. Who will call Ghostbusters 2016 a classic in 10 or 20 years? Hollywood seems to be running out of spontaneous, heart-warming, life changing methods and approaches for leaving a respectable impact on the audience, as evidenced by Ghostbusters 2016.
Damn coconut head, you got really edgy later in life
I loved this film when it first came out, some 25 years ago or more. I need to see it again.
This movie changed my life. I love it!
I saw this first on one of our TV channel at 3 am. I was stunned and stucked in front of the TV with open mouth.
It's like I'am dreaming.
I've never seen like it before.
I'd like more movies done with this technique!!!
Excellent job!!!
I remember thinking I was sooo deep, complex and different when I watched this in my first year of college lol
A few years of actual academic and life experience later I see the stereotype I fit in in the comment section.
I mean, if you pay attention, its both deep and full of shit, and I think that's the point.
This movie made me really emotional..I especially liked that blonde woman. There was a calmness about her..
This movie is a gem... Worth watching.. 👌🏻💯
Favorite movie of all time!
The trailer looks great and makes me want to watch it.
I saw a preview for this on an old VHS when I was 9, and I remember wanting to see it but never getting to. Then 9 years later i remeber the movie and scour the internet for hours trying to find the title. Finally found it and I'm excited to watch it!!!
Ah yes. This was the movie that made me and my philosophy professor best friends.
Damn. This must be the same creator as the one for the music video for, “Everything Hits At Once”, by Spoon.
I watched it extremely high yesterday. I did miss a lot, but I had an experience like no other. Looking forward to watching it sober tonight. =D
If you want to experience something great, take lsd and watch this. The already trippy effects make the movie look like it's alive and that the characters breathe on their own. You also get a bigger perspective of life.
yeah this is literally a stoner movie
taking lsd with this is the only way to make it watchable
ive watched it 7 times and i still learn stuff from it
I tried to watch this film years and years ago. The art style literally gave me a headache after five minutes of watching it and I had to stop.
I watched this when I was young and full of idealism. Nothing changed. I didn't magically just "wake up". It's just an animated sequence, a fantasy and we all know that fantasies do nothing.
I have a core memory of this movie I have watched it, someone, I
I just watched it and I can't believe it was made 13 years ago!
they could have just released this movie unanimated, but i love the direction they went with for it
This is more than just a film, this is a lesson.
thats crazy, theres main characters from that movie "Dazed and Confused" in here, like that kid who plays the main character thats the freshman in "Dazed and Confused" Just goes to show how good the actors are, because this movie looks even better
Love this movie such great vibes
I actually just had a chance to watch it once on my DVR this weekend. However I instantly went online to buy the DVD as I feel it will take multiple viewings to truly appreciate it. I'm a fan of all types of movies but love them when they go outside the proverbial box which this movie obviously does. I'm certain you would agree the general populace who love things like Jersey Shore would not sit through something as rewarding and beautiful as this movie. Assured their brains would overload.
I really appreciate the makers of this movie for bringing so many spiritual truths out to the world and inspiring people to learn and try lucid dreaming and dream yoga for their integral evolution! Must watch for those looking for answers to mysteries of life!
Everything is reversed, up is down, light is dark, hot is cold and cold is hot. Gravity won't be able to hold you, eventually you will fly.

yes this movie was a mindfuck. it's been a while since i've seen a movie that just made me think, about myself, other people, everything i've ever known, etc. just about my consciousness in general.
Movies like Waking life, Primer, The Fountain, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dark City. I love them all, but I'm not very good at movies, can someone complete this list for me? That is suggesting clever, high quality movies of this kind. That would be helpful, thanks very much
A Scanner Darkly

New York, Synecdoche.
Mr. Nobody
Drugs or no drugs this is a great film, and I think those who are able to comprehend it, regardless, are the ones who really can take the most out of watching this peice of work.
Mindbreaking in every damn minute of the film. The dream conversations really got to me, Imma start training to dream lucidly.
Despite the great soundtrack and visuals I kept falling asleep.
Great movie... one of my all time favorites.
This is the best film about dreams I've ever seen.
"Inception" is not a serious dream move. Its an action movie that uses so-called dream states as a plot device. The "dreams" in Inception to not resemble dreams at all really.
"Waking Life" deals seriously with dreams on intellectual and emotional levels. It is one of the most important films of the last decade.
I accidentally bought A Scanner Darkly thinking it was this movie. What a funny mistake considering it’s from the same director, both have Alex Jones cameos and this movie referencing Philp K. Dick.
I really like Waking Life, and because I like Waking Life so much I tried to get myself to like A Scanner Darkly, I think I watched it 2 or 3 times trying to get into it, but I never was able to like it.

wonderful trailer as the entire movie..LOVE iggy pop in the end it fits great
The music (opening bars) at the beginning of the trailer strikes me as the opening bars to K-Ci & JoJo's "All My Life" played down half an octave (that track itself was riffing Eric Johnson's guitar standard 'Cliffs of Dover".)
The best movie i ever saw.
