    Hey Kate,
Greetings from Dawson County, Montana. Dumping on the go was always stressful. There was only 2 feet between the truck and combine. When I was farming, I ran into the combine several in as a farmer. Bent metal, downtime fixing the latest disaster and a plethora of "Working Words" was the result of such an event. It was usually the hottest time of the day as well. Augh yes. the joys of farming. When I was farming +20 years ago, I grew wheat that had a solid stem; thus denying the little darlings of the destructive fun of cutting down the crop. It's ALWAYS something that needs to be addressed. Thank you for sharing your harvest moments with us. Take care and be safe Kate.

I’d love to give our little stripper header a try on that downed wheat. It’s only 20 feet, it would take forever, but the grains we grow are super tall and they lodge pretty easily because they lack the genetic improvements of modern wheat. Their is a lot of rotating machinery in that style header and it causes a vacuum effect that stands up downed plants, then combs the heads off.

    • @KatesAg

Kate. (I really love your videos). In Montana, can you get hold of "Combine Lifters"? When I was farming in the UK we use to put them on the front of the fingers of the cutting bar at about 12 inch spacing and they would lift the flat crop up above the knife, so it could enter the combine.

In the Palouse Region of Washington state and Idaho (USA) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palouse , these lifters are used for crops like lentils and dry peas which grow close to the ground. They lift the crop just enough so that the sickle can cut them off about 1-2 inches from the ground. Our farm is about 275 miles from western Montana, but I never heard of a saw fly until I watched this video. In the Palouse, wheat and barley is almost never swathed before harvesting.

Now that you have combined the field, can you rake the downed wheat into windrows with a hay rake, then go over them with a combine to try to recover some more wheat? Might be worth trying a few acres to see if it's worth it. The sunset behind you is beautiful at the end of your video!! Another great and informative Kate's Ag video!! :)

As you may remember, I told you about the farmers using pickup headers to pick up the wheat knocked down by winds etc. You can do the same thing with your spring wheat the sawflies got at without using the swather. If we Canadians can do it without swathing you sure as all heck can. It's better than letting it all go to waste.

What a treat! A new Kate video, Sunday morning and an enforced lie in because my granddaughter Kate doesn't allow me wandering around early on Sundays when she is in the kitchen. My Kate is thirteen years old. Here. about 2/3 of the way up the very active volcano Mt Merapi in Java in Indonesia 21.5 kms North of the City of Yogyakarta, we are about 14 hours ahead of you I think.
Grandma, Kate and I live here in the middle of the wet rice fields in a large wooden house on 48 legs. The fields are very small and terraced to take care of the steep hill, our world up here is all about the slope! The farming is done mostly by hand on plots owned by local families who combine with each other in village cooperatives. Ploughing between crops used to be done by oxen pulled single tine ploughs but recently the local ploughman retired his ox and bought a second hand tractor he walks behind struggling to direct it by the sheer strength of his rather skinny arms. The machine is basically two big wheels and a motor with the controls on the long handlebars.
Our Kate has grown up with us here in the countryside, her mum lives in the city to the south of us, down hill. Kate is studying online at the moment but due to get back into school soon in the city which is a 40 kms round trip each day, roughly, in our old 8 seater Suzuki. Kate prefers studying online but Gma and I say she needs to socialise more, so we are making sure she gets back to it soon.
Just thought I would let you know that your videos are being enjoyed in Central Java. Thank you Kate you are doing a great job. Our wheat flour is all imported, I like to think it starts in your fields. We have a small bakery at home here and I imagine sometimes the journey the ingredients have made to get to be the bun surrounding the burgers I make for Kate, the pastry case on a beef and onion pie and so on.

I guess maybe those flies are evolving and can now get into the solid stem of the spring wheat? What's the life cycle of the flies? Are the eggs hatched and gone by the time crop is harvested or are they still in the straw left behind? Should the fields be burned after harvest to destroy the eggs or are they being exported in baled straw?

I'm a little confused as to why you continued to harvest the field when most of the field was laying on the ground. I was also thinking that when you come across a big rock, why not put a flag on it so you can remove the rock on a later day.
    Great vid Kate.

@@KatesAg I agree with you Kate about the rock. I had such problem here in Croatia where I'm living now. If you pick up that one this year, next year when you plowing you'll again dig up another. It is such kind of soil, where is a lot of stones under ground...

Hi Miss Kate ! As always it was good to see you and get another lesson in harvesting.
I am sorry you all didn't have a good yield on that field, I know most farmers depend on a decent harvest to survive. But maybe you will have a good yield on the rest of your fields. I'm glad their were no breakdowns to add to the already stressful season. it looked like I could see in the background what looked like the area where the fires took place.
I don't know if you noticed when you were signing off by the School house , The beautiful sunset. It was really beautiful how the sun was shining through the clouds.
Well I hope you have a wonderful week ahead. looking forward to seeing you next time.

Hi Mr. Eady! Thank you for your wonderful and kind words!! This has been a challenging harvest and we know we are going to have years like this. The saw flies and the drought are a bit more than we probably expected though. I agree the sunset is so beautiful and we park our rigs by the old school house which is really neat.
