    I bought a LOT of JVC projectors back in the day for various cinema's (including my own). When BenQ first launched their budget 4k projector I bought one for the games room. I kept running back and forth between the cinema room and the ghetto games room and really was hard pushed to see the difference. The JVC projectors are high end and quality items, BUT I cannot justify the X9 prices especially when projectors are "fashion" and will be out of cool in 2 years. I just upgraded my DLP to laser and I am very happy with the results. Uk prices for the Benq 7100 are £1300 from Richer Sounds with a 6 year warranty. Bye bye JVC.. too little too late.

    Wow. I'm going to be in the market for a 4k very-high-quality projector in the next year and I'll have to say that the Valerion is performing unbelievably beyond its price class. The JVC has undoubtedly better color accuracy (the Valerion is notably red-shifted to me) but I found myself preferring the Valerion image in a lot of the dark scenes! Also, at no point does the JVC completely embarrass the Valerion, which you'd expect with this level of price difference.
    So yeah, this is a lot to think about. I do have a dedicated theater and noise, speakers, OS, etc simply don't matter at all and thus I wouldn't naturally be even glancing at "lifestyle" projectors. But that Valerion -- wow.

    Very interesting comparison - thanks for taking the time to do it. Two questions:
    1. What is the source for the 'Reference' video?
    2. What were the HDR settings on the JVC?

      What display is the ripped raw file being played on, and how is it handling or tone mapping the HDR? It just looks a little flat, although viewing all of this on UA-cam is likely quite a bit different from in-person.
      And the HDR Level on the JVC - Auto or another setting?

    • @ryankramer
      @ryankramer 18 днів тому +6

      @@dlcphoto I think you're misunderstanding something. The reference video isn't playing on a display at all. You're simply watching the actual movie clip for comparison. It would be like searching up a movie trailer on youtube, and watching that. The only display in that scenario is the one you're looking at. :-) The better question to ask would be what color space conversions / file format conversions did the reference file see in the production pipeline.

    • @dlcphoto
      @dlcphoto 17 днів тому

      @@ryankramer Thanks for the reply, and yes, this gets towards what I was thinking about. "Reference" would ultimately be seeing what would be seen on the calibrated display used by the film's technical people, capable of fully showing the color space, dynamic range, etc. I understand that.
      I'm trying to understand how the 'Reference' shown in the video compares with what was seen on that original calibrated display, and how it got from the digital file to an image in the video.
      And to be clear, this is not intended as a criticism of the video; just trying to fully understand more about the 'Reference' image that is shown.

    • @ryankramer
      @ryankramer 17 днів тому +6

      @@dlcphoto Once the file is locked and 'blessed' from the mastering sessions, the video file is what it is REGARDLESS of that original display that was used to create it. It's entirely possible to have a MORE accurate and BETTER display to view the file than what was used to grade and master the original one used in production. (Pricey though! ^_^) That's why thinking about what the original display was that it was mastered with doesn't really gain you anything and one should focus on the importance of finding the highest quality footage file (with no mastering errors) instead.
      As for pipeline, speaking generally, the original footage would probably be ripped from a disc. You'd take that footage and bring it into a NLE (Non linear editor) like Davinci Resolve. When you set up your project in your NLE, you want to be matching your project to your file's specs. Things like bit depth, color space, resolution, frame rate, etc. should all match.
      You would want to have any footage of the projectors shot also lined up with the same specs if possible. Now, it's almost impossible to do perfectly in practice,. Frame rates, shutter speeds, exposures for one display vs another, etc. make it very tricky to match everything. In reality, you're left with approximations of what you see in person, which is why people can't get too carried away with what they watch here in this video and why The Hook Up even said it's a little silly. ^_^
      To be sure though, it sure looks like this video was made to do a good job of matching what was seen perceptively, and I applaud the work that went into it.

    I haven't seen valerion in person but I tried other triple laser ust (even been to a showdown event), an Epson 5040, a benq 3550 and even a jvc np5 in a dark room clearly wins. The contrast makes a huge difference in image 3d pop. Valerion is native 3000:1. Jvc np5 only appears dim in some instances at 1800 lumens. I enjoy watching jvc on 120" more than I enjoy watching a 77" oled. Oled doesn't get as bright as lcd but oled's image just pop so much more. It's the same as jvc compared to other projectors I mentioned.

    Two quick questions regarding the Valerion Pro.
    1. What models of Screens would you recommend for day & night time viewing?
    Do you think it's worth to buy for it the Fresnel ALR Screen offered in bundle pack at Kickstarter?
    2. Is there a menu in it's OS, which you can use to calibrate color accuracy below delta 3?

    • @Fiztex553
      @Fiztex553 14 днів тому +1

      I believe I can answer 😉:
      1) No one knows about their ALR. Valerion claims a new de-speckle tech but those who got the screen can't share a lot of details. Long throw ALR Fresnel screens are being sold for around 3 years but they are not very popular, as you won't even find reviews on them, just occasional mentioning on AVS. According to one reviewer from Australia on the Valerion screen there is still a bit of a laser speckle but it's not clear whether it's because the screen was not positioned properly as he was testing ceiling mount and might not have flipped the screen upside down - said reviewer packed the PJ up and has no time to test it again. One thing for sure - the minimal laser speckle and the best sharpness is going to be on a decent white screen, if you have the dark room ready for it. Alternatively you can consider 0.6-0.8 gain matte gray screen (not ALR) if you have a light bleed somewhere or reflections in the dark, but still forget about day viewing with it. I gambled and ordered their Fresnel 100" - I figured if it fails I'll still sell it for a couple hundred and the total loss wont be too high for me to worry about. I consider it a learning experience, a very typical thing in the PJ world 🤣
      2) For sure there is everything in it to calibrate it properly. You can find the results on YT, avg. accuracy is well below 3. Question is whether you have access to required equipment (costs like several projectors like this) or a company which can do it for you. Personally I'll just use reference images to balance RGB. I'll mostly watch HDR on it anyway (real and RTX HDR through MPC Video Renderer).

    I think the Valerion's colours were a little off in some scenes, but overall I think I actually preferred it to the JVC. The one area that it seemed to fail was in the very bright HDR scene where the guy is looking down into the camera, with a lit sky behind him. The clouds were completely blown out on the Valerion... but is that worth paying $14k more for the JVC? I don't think so.

    Thanks for the great video, appreciate all the hard work you had to do to make it happen; carrying that JVC around alone must have been a back breaker, hope the cart was close! I’m seriously considering the Valerion Max now… I also have a Lumagen I could pair with it. How is motion compared against the JVC? I like the motion on my JVC FWIW so just curious if we can expect similar performance from the two in that regard.

      I don't think I would be looking at that upgrade that way. Valerion has good blacks for lifestyle DLP but in general blacks have been bad with this class of projectors. Like worse than classic 1080p DLP projectors with larger DMD. I highly prefer my really old JVC HD350 to several 4K DLP lifestyle projectors I have tried for movies. Older DILA models don't have low latency for gaming. I am expecting to get passable blacks for Valerion but not inky blacks.

But anything 120 and below….. well brightness and pixel blow out would be less also of a factor. I’m sure in person the JVC must have preformed better than this lol!!

    From 4:20 when the camera pans to the right and left it seems the footage from the Valerion has some lag, the JVC a little less. Would this be because it is recorded?

      This was not recorded on a splitter, each had its own source to ensure the correct EDID and tone mapping info was sent. The sources were just ever so slightly out of sync.

    Looks like the Valerion is looking slightly desaturated / less contrasty? I think the white balance might be slightly too blueish (although to my eyes that actually looks more natural, but we do want it to match the color grading)

    The NZ8 is last gen and as such I imagine would not cost the same as the current gen JVC NZ800 at $15-16k. The JVC black levels are appreciably better in real life and comparisons like this without level calibration mean nothing. In real life I imagine the grey blacks of the Valerion would irritate me and DLP rainbow (although appears to be minimized) probably a major issue. There are positives and negatives on both sides, but I would strongly recommend anyone looking to buy any projector to demo it in person first.

      But Valerion stuff can be fixed by going for a Grey Screen without ALR, since it's brightness is higher than JVC you will get better black bars with slight sacrifice in brightness that will still be higher than JVC, and the rainbow issue is usually only visible in ALR screen or poor quality ones, I bet a regular Matte Grey or White won't be visible.

    • @grundybunch9944
      @grundybunch9944 17 днів тому +1

      Yes it's an unfair comparison, the JVC was fully calibrated and the Valerion was just out of the box with NO calibration. The JVC is supposed to beat the competition, no doubt.

    what would explain the color differences here if both have such low delta e and wide color spaces?

  • @hindagsxr
    @hindagsxr 18 днів тому +3

    For me, the choice of Valerion. The color accuracy in relation to the reference was different. Sometimes Valerion was better, sometimes JVC. But the HDR brightness was much better in Valerion. Regarding black. Very high black in JVC often caused loss of detail in black. JVC often had darker black than reference. I don't know if it should be like that. However, despite the fact that in dark details Reference and JVC had similar colors (scenes on a boat in the port), the great tonal balance of colors in Valerion convinced me more.

      @@dominus519 and if you think it won't ,then what are you doing here? The whole video is about trying to show the difference between those. Or did you just come to offend people?
      Video shows valid difference in tone mapping and great EBL of Valerion which can definitely lead to that impression. Obviously, those are completely different projectors with different goals. JVC is trying hard to show an image close to reference via classic approach through hardware brute force (much bigger static contrast), while Valerion achieves very likable picture through amazing tone mapping and EBL. And if are going to like both pictures, then why pay at least $14000 more? Only a few are going to choose to spend so much extra to achieve that little. The whole home cinema with construction, sound and furniture can come close to that difference if you DIY.
