- In this video, producer/engineer Andrew Scheps (Adele, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hozier) explains how he likes to use his Waves Scheps 73 plugin, modeled on the Neve 1073 console’s EQ and mic preamp module, and gives his tips on using the plugin for mid-side EQing. Learn more: www.waves.com/scheps73
I love the fact I understood everything he was talking about. There was once a time where I'd sit there baffled.
One of the best feelings when le ae rning to mix n master
DUDE IM JUST NOW RELATING TO THIS COMMENT AND I SHIT YOU NOT I REMEMBER READING THIS THREE YEARS AGO AND THINKING “Damn idk if I’ll ever reach that” HAHAHA
This Guy introduced a book called Mixing Metal Music that changed my life,
This awesome book changed many of my mixing and mastering beliefs
I really found out that the plugins are important for mixing but the more important thing is knowledge and then experience,
Trial and error is not working forever
I was literally just thinking the same thing before I read this
Growth feels good
Andrew Scheps is the Gandalf of the mixing world. A wizard.
A great plugin indeed. I've used it to replace most of the EQ's in most of my tracks. Dramatically improved the overall feel and tone of them.
Scheps is taking over the plugin industry. Looking into getting parallel particles. He's on a roll

i love his little lesson on M/S mixing
It's a great sounding and versatile eq. I tend to use the Lindell 80 because of the full channel strip, but I still use the Scheps 73 on certain elements, a lot of times just for the preamp grit. Love that on my distorted bass tracks. Andrew has become one of my favorite voices in mixing. I bet he'd be a blast to sit down with. Just a cool cat.
I can listen to Andrew for days!! So simple yet articulate... #djrtnyc
I absolutely love that they've added M/S-processing, because like Andrew pretty much explained it does make more sense (or at least make it more versatile) than just having L/R-processing. - When I started using this only a couple of years ago as a beginning "engineer", I immediately "got" it and it's how I like to use any plug-in that supports it by default.
But I don't understand why engineers with probably decades of experience, such as Scheps himself, need to "wrap their heads around it". I've heard them say more often that they "were starting to understand it". And I get that in those decades of experience they've likely always used L/R-processing, and that it might be hard to suddenly switch your brain to "M/S-mode" basically, but I don't find it to be that complicated. If anything it's a bit more logical when thinking of a stereo field (even though it's a mix of the left and right channels). - It's just either everything down the middle or just the sides, kind of like if you'd take the 3 front speakers in a 5.1-setup... Kind of (cause it's mixed differently, but still)...
Anyway, I love it. It makes for much deeper editing and creating separation and even width and so on. I mean, you can do all this with just L/R-processing like in the old days, but it takes a lot more precision setup, recording, mixing, and perhaps mastering, before you get the same results that you can now get through M/S-processing. - So props for anyone implementing and supporting it. :)
Well they definitely understand the concept of M/S - that is easy. It's just that it takes time to figure out how it's actually going to improve mixes that are already great. M/S EQ can make things sound worse much faster than typical EQ, but it opens a world of possibilities at the same time. So it's definitely something for even an expert engineer to wrap their head around.
Not speaking for Andrew, just my 2c as someone who's been doing it professionally for awhile.
This was an incredible video, with lots of great insight. Most importantly, it has inspired me to dig a little deeper into M/S technique, especially regarding piano.
I really love the distortion from the pre amp!
I picked up Scheps 73 when I got Scheps Omni Channel (the BEST channel strip) and unexpectedly it turned out to be my favorite EQ. In my experience it just does what I need an EQ to do -- but its faster for me to dial in what I need, and it has a subtle color that is always an improvement over more transparent EQs. It just sounds good!
I love Scheps and everything he stands for. What a great dude!
Love that man and his plugin. One of the best!
I love the explanation for use of M/S eqing on instruments and stereo bus.
Damir
one of the best plugin that i have!
I love Andrew Scheps, and I love WAVES plugins! That being said, it really fucks with me when I click on a video like this, and the audio of the video is all muddy and mushy. Having Waves post videos with poor sound quality is ironic, like seeing a sign shop with an old beat-up sign in front of it with burnt out letters and stuff; like showing up at a landscaping company and having the front yard of the business be all weeds and yellow grass patches; like walking into a pest control business and seeing a rat scurrying across the floor. This is WHAT YOU DO Waves! Lol, again, I LOVE Andrew and Waves, but the official Waves Audio youtube channel shouldn't be putting out videos with bad sound quality. I could download this video right now, pop it into my DAW, and in 5 minutes (Using nothing but WAVES plugins) make it sound 10 times better. Sorry to be such a negative nancy, but I'm watching this video on my studio speakers and it's making the audiophile O.C.D. in my brain twitch.
Great - I love that widening preset!
Mid side EQ'ing is really cool. It also adds a bit of complexity to the process since you still want balance in mono.
Great video! just up in the air on which eq to purchase. So many wonderful; eq's out here. got to do the research.
Great video. I use softube mostly and that is because I come from the analog world so anything that comes from that world I am interested in. Last night on a mix session I placed the 73 on a few channels but it was not what I was looking for (I was not sure what it was) but it brought my attention to it and this video was helpful. I think I'll try it on some drums pre-softube SSL 4K and only use what I need from the SSL from there. I did use the particle processor in my mastering chain. That was cool.
I could listen to Scheps talk all day, he has such wisdom. There’s no doubt a 10 minutes conversation could open my eyes more than 2 years of production class
excellent - as always
Waves te Amo!!!
I like how specific Andrew is about frequency ranges.
This is a great mastering eq for me rn
Scheps always cuts through the BS. He gives mixing 100% in-the-box real street cred!
This Plugin version comes in Waves V9R30?
Подойдет ли этот плагин для песни Ядрена вошь ?
Andrew, I like the DESK , that you are sitting oin front of . Can you tell me where I can get it and the price.?
Amazing....
GREAT VIDEO SCHEPS!
THNK YOU
what a stud, Grandmaster status
Hello Andrew, I want to thank you so Much for all of your Video's. I have a couple of things I wanted to ask. first, does the Scheps 73 EQ Add AIR to an Instrument , or a Vocal. if so how would you make the settings. second, 2 MOnths ago I bought your Template and my PC crashed and I Lost it , can you Possable help me out. may I ask, now that your working in the Box now, what is your go to Vocal setup. lastly, I wrote you awhile back about the Harrison MixBus 32c ( DAW ) you said you would check it out. I think it awesome. please let me know what you think. thanks. Bill
I love this plugin.
Thinks this is going to be a new purchase for me and just to learn MS eq better if anything
I texted this comment in just 5 secs of the video...be aise of the quality of the sound of this video ...wowowowowowowoowwoowoowowowowwowowo...how clear are the vocals😮😮😮😮
Can I use this Plugin on my recording track to send my voice through as well?
I would be interested to know how this plugin works with electronic music. Trance etc.
ProtecSirius Absolutely. The MS control let's you gain control over (for example) a synth' modulation and you can automate the modulation levels from the sides to the middle without losing any other elements impact or blurring it might create if it's left at static levels in the middle and sides. That's just one example I can think of. I suppose one could also benefit from the same application if you were moving a kick or bass to the side for an effect in a transition or particular song phrase to really impact a "scene change" where the elemental content doesn't change. Very good plugin, the ms is a huge asset of the plugin design
ProtecSirius I think well since he's mixed a lot of Hip-Hop and bands with Electronic influences. He's also a fan of Euroblocks modular stuff
If you were only going to use one eq, painting in broader strokes, this is all you need. The preamp gain section is extremely subtle so it's not always an audible difference, but def adds some salt.
wow! i tried really hard on hearing the difference the pre amp...and frankly (caus i have bad ears) i cannot know much difference. thanks for the info
more ear training ear to do :)
+Andrew Twirling it's so subtle so it's most likely not your ears. I can barely hear it unless it's a loud vocal or full drum kit. The UA version of it is not subtle at all though, if you wanted to check that one out. The eq and MS processing on the waves version is worth it
+Andrew Twirling Try cranking the input fader(s) in the plugin and you'll get more from the pre-amp control. Conversely, lower the input fader if you're engaging the "drive" mode of the pre-amp - if the distortion is too much...
Let me get stuck in 💪
Great video - such a shame his mic is overloading on a video about production (face palm!)
Scheps is a great mixer but he's also a great TEACHER. He can dig right to heart of an issue and distill it in a way that feels simple, even though it's not at all. I've learned more from his tutorials than anyone else. Contrast with Michael Brauer, who is a great mixer but isn't very good at explaining HOW he does what he does.
Scheps 73 or SSL E Channel? For trap vocals?
No such thing as "trap vocals" just say vocals, and why not use both
@@whatareyouselling9811 I was speaking on mordern trap mixes, I was only trying to shorten my words. As for your suggestion, I only brought the Echannel that day. I do like your idea to use both. I haven't really used the EChannel yet, and I may buy the 73 one day if I choose. Honestly I wish I could swap them right now, cuz I made the wrong choice for myself I believe. I can't really find a use for the Echannel yet.
Go for SSL E Channel Bro ;) countless records were mixed with ssl e and DR.Dre mixed his records with it. Hope it helps :)
Beginner question: what does he mean w. tracking?
When you record with the plugin enabled
wow...
SCHEPS PLUG IN IS PURE HARDWARE IN SOFTWARE FORM
Andrew is so SQUARE.
I'm VERY new in mixing, and producing. But I feel that I understand every single thing Andrew says...
Did it take 73 tries to make this?
Hi, as I already use quite a few Waves plugins I have 2 question regarding Sheps 73. 1. What is the difference between this and Pultec EQ, I already have Waves Pultec EQs, would it be worth buying Sheps as an addition? and 2nd question: Is it common to use Sheps 73 stereo plugin on master fader in MS mode to EQ mid and sides slightly different. I`m using demo now, like results but is it common technique to use that plugin on master fader? Thank you for answer.
don t ask if it s common or not. Just try, if it sounds good then you are good. If not, change it.
tenho muito a aprende cm ele que deus abencoe sua vida
Bro, we care!
kind of weird... his voice sounds like it's naturally vocoded to me 😁
Unsurprisingly he probably got the greatest signal chain ever recording his voice lol
@Gernot Hassknecht Can u plz tell me how come I get this kind of bassy woof vocal..mix using plugins...
@@dsenzmusic6491 not really anything can do. you can boosting your low end with a shelf then applying saturation to the lower frequencies.
Waves and Pro Tools = Atomic Bomb
Looks like Jack Conte went into a cave for a while...
I see you enjoy genelecs :D
I didn't know Rick Rubin had a brother
Hes that bass player from Phil Collins.
Only problem is he never responds to his fans
He looks hebrew
just tried,,,,, shieeeeeeeeet.
He looks kinda scary...
Talk is cheap .
Don’t tell me . Show me .
