Awesome job sir Mike White!! you were my favorite and most memorable professor at SAE in NYC. would love to see you review more plug ins! keep kicking ass mike!
If you can hear a difference with stuff soloed, you're using WAY too much color! I have a 1073 DPA unit in my rack that I feed line level signal into, and unless you're REALLY driving it, you aren't going to hear much. But I *never* use solo when mixing, so maybe that's why I hear the Scheps 73 when I use it on a mix. You can DEFINITELY hear it in a mix...if you can't, you're in the wrong business. LOL But I don't doubt for a second that you can't hear it on just 1 or 2 instruments. People I think are listening incorrectly, they're doing additive listening (expecting it to sound different after it's applied) instead of subtractive listening (where you DEFINITELY hear something missing when you remove it). It's like the Slate VCC. Not really something you can hear by itself...but you turn off all the channels on the fly and your mix absolutely disintegrates. This is a good emulation. I think UAD's is better, but I'm not buying an Apollo just to get some of their plugins. For many home recordists who are on a tight budget, this is about as close to a real Neve they will get, and I think they did a pretty good job with it.
Eric Pederson Sorry but I completely disagree... when you use NLS, V-Series or Puigtec it doesn´t take you too long to hear or feel some color. The first time I tried V-Series for example I could feel the color after just little time. Before it I was using SSL Bundle, wich is really transparent and adds almost any color. After using V-Series for some years I decided to explore Puigtec, and I could feel the different color it added. I said "Ok lets try this new one and see what kind of color it adds". The answer: None. None I could hear, and none that would justify the investiment. NLS and VCC make a HUGE difference when you turn on and make the right PFL. When I make a preview of the mix for someone I just add NLS NEVO with the right PFL and some bus compression and immediately sounds awesome...
Alexandre I understand what you are saying, and agree that some gear adds more harmonic distortion than others. I'm simply saying that this Neve model is pretty accurate...and I base that on the fact that I own hardware Neves. The color starts to be audible when you begin driving the circuit. It always has color, obviously, but ESPECIALLY if you listen to it in solo (which is something I would never dream of doing while mixing), you aren't going to hear much...and if you do, it's WAY too much. That's what I'm saying. The color is there, and this emulation is pretty close to a Neve's properties. It will never be the same as having a real one, but this is pretty good. That's why I bought a copy--it's good enough, most definitely.
That preamp section is very subtle to the point of nonexistent (at least hearing over UA-cam). My hardware version is more obvious and predictable. Still, if you're into the 1083 sound, the EQ section and overall gain staging is well done.
I was hoping this EQ will be able to give some of that preamp colour for those of us engineers that can't afford Neve Pres and use fairly flat sounding pres.
It was hard to hear, but I think it's mostly because he was dialing through the settings subtlety rather than really showing us the big A/B between fully cranked and not. I bought this plug a few weeks ago and believe me, that preamp section is badass! Once you get that big A/B comparison, hearing what it's doing becomes a lot more obvious... I used the pre-amp to dirty up a piano part in a recent mix and it got me exactly what I was looking for. Grit without mangling.
I own this plugin, and make music in Reason. I sent an LFO to control the Preamp section of the 1073, and sweep through the values at a steady rate I could listen for. I played white noise and tried filtering the white noise to check which were the most affected areas. I can tell you that with 3 1073s in series, all getting their Preamp section getting sweeped through in sync by the same LFO, you can finally perceive subtly the effect of it. In other words: I have no idea when that preamp thing works its magic to perceptible amounts really, unless you crank it with the line levels. Just use the EQ and forget the baloney.
Relax bro. The tutorial was on point. True. He cold have turned the volume up but the Schep 73 is the truth. Download it for yourself and put it to the test.
Haha I wouldn't be bragging about that :P I didn't hear it at first when I bought the Scheps either, but soon realized it adds a bit of grit and harmonics. It's subtle, but when you have the preamp cranked all the way up, then switch to it back to all the way down it becomes obvious as to what it's doing... Takes some quick ear training to be able to pick it out, but it's definitely awesome!
UA-cam audio is 192kbps at maximum quality, if I'm not mistaken. So it's not surprising that, if it is that subtle, I/we might not be able to hear it here.
Matt Mullin I wouldn´t consider it a explanation. I already tried the plug-in and after tweeking a lot felt no difference. If pre-amp is the subject I would go with NLS... this pre-amp is not worth
Alexandre , I own both NLS and Scheps 73 and I have no idea what you're talking about. This is an EQ, modeled after a classic. It's not an overdrive effect. You don't want BIG differences in an EQ. What you want is to be able to create your sound. This is just one component. This EQ may not be for you. I'm loving it.
I thought it wasn't doing anything at first, but then I tested it and it does. its extremely subtle. Try testing it by using a test tone sine wave, then the scheps eq, then a frequency analyzer in a chain. You will see the harmonics in the analyzer.
If we, people who do this for a living, can't hear the difference even when we are listening carefully...it's definitely not gonna make any difference to the average listener.
@@thebigpicture2455 Most of the things we do are not gonna be noticed by the "average listener." However, all these small subtleties (when added together) is what creates a good and coherent mix in the end, which will be noticed.
Adding preamp saturation without drive option does nothing audible. There are some harmonics in Plugin Doctor though. With drive enabled it has too much saturation even if input is down at -24db. It works like it is broken, not natural at all.
you are a great engeener, i love the bass paning in contrast with guitar leaving the kick in the center alone, like Eddy Krammer use to do with hendrix, not as extrem but the aproach is here, people tend to mix the bass and kick in the center, this cause when you mono the mix an overload of bass frequencies, i guess today it does not mind too much, but Eddy Krammer´s Jimi Hendrix mixes, i.e. Bold as Love sound genius, hyper creative with panning and a lot more going on of courses
@@Fonkemman Well, people who use these plugins don't need curves and slopes. They use their ears. With very little practice you can definitely "see" what you are doing. You know which filter you use, you know its Q, you know the frequency and you know the gain so you can "visualize" it just as if you were in front of a graphic EQ. At that point , the graphic thing is fancy but doesn't add anything. A graphic render isn't necessarily best, it's just different. And those analog emulations aren't graphic by essence. Moreover, Waves also has graphical renderers (Q-clone) which allow you to see what you are doing so, if you really need some visual, their you have it.
mjeh mostly artifacts from the pre in my opinion. But you cant of course make the resoution better through a plug, that you need the real pre to start with
Very professional, informative video. However, the music examples are mixed entirely too low to be able to hear any nuances of the plug-in. Strongly suggest you remix with more level to the music examples between the narrative... at least AS loud as the narrative. Ideally quite a bit hotter than your narration. Best.
so here we have an example of a producer mixing drums through one of the best eq strips ever modelled. The narration is clear and loud, yet the drums track and processing are way too quiet to hear the subtle differences clearly. If you cant get the levels of this video tutorial right, then why would anyone listen to your advice? basic mistakes are being made.
It's amazing how Waves find people to do this like official videos. It's really aweful video. May be it shows how plugin works. But mixing sound in solo is wrong way and applying everywhere this Drive mode is aweful method. Finally we have this dirty without warmth sound. Waves, find may be some pro engineer
I've tested the preamp on vocals, on a RODE NT1 and it sound outstanding, seriously.
this pluggin is my 'go to' for everything! it's amazing

Same here! Class 09/05. He's great, many great convo's with him
I have headphones on and I`m streaming at 1080p, I don`t hear any difference in the pre-amp section. Is it only me?
No you´re not alone...
Already tried the plug-in either and felt no difference...

The bottom line for me is that this plugin is absolutely fabulous for taking away that "sterile" sound you get mixing in the box.
+Uprightest - Yes and the SSL-4000 collection too.
This could be used in EVERY situation! GRAB IT!

But then you can use another EQ as well. :)
Why the volume of the samples is so low? And this tutorial supossed to show a very sofisticated plug in for mixing?
I agree...
to me it is OK one of the best volume match between processed and unprocessed signal i have heard
Relax bro. The tutorial was on point. True. He cold have turned the volume up but the Schep 73 is the truth. Download it for yourself and put it to the test.
Great tutorial. I have this plugin but until I watched this video, I really didn't understand how it all works. Thank you!
This is an excellent tutorial by Mike White! Very thorough and clear. Will look for more of these for future Waves plugs!
Yep, I definitely can't hear the preamp section through here.

thanks ..great insight into how this plugin works :)
Is this an Emperor's new clothes deal? I can't hear any change in the preamp.
Outstanding.. On the "to buy" list. THANKS

Yeah it's serious bro
Looks great, but isn't HP on 50 a bit high for bass though?
Just saw HP was dimmed:)
UA-cam really reduces the sound quality and it's hard getting the nuances, you should really upload a HIGH QUALITY wav file to your website.
Just a Perfect review! Thank you Sir.

can someone please explain why anyone would use these type EQ's when there are ones where you can draw your own curves and slopes?
