In this episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to new music from Devin Townsend. Moonpeople and Call of the Void are the first two singles from Devin's upcoming album Lightwork, which is scheduled to drop later this month. I found these two songs to be beautiful, full of wisdom, and authentically Devin. I can't wait to hear the whole album! Enjoy!

Devin definitely has a chill vein in his work: often in parallel with creating the intense, he'd record the more laid back, sometimes downright meditative, almost as relief valve. Check out Ghost, Ki, or Casualties of Cool albums for that side of him. Also, you may find interesting an intermediate version of Call of the Void posted on his YT channel under Quarantine Project, originally inspired by an ambient tune he came across, must've really stuck with him to finish it for the album.
Casualties of Cool is a gem
I only recently discovered Devin Townsend, THROUGH this channel! Love your energy, Doug.
Lightwork is like a warm hug that I didn’t know I needed. I love everything about this entire album. Thank you Devin 🤘💀🤘
Yay! It got unblocked! Whoop whoop 🙌. I agree with you too re the pandemic, but then again, that is the one shared experience of this entire generation all around the world! Aren’t these tunes lovely? I’m such a big fan of Devin, much like you Doug can see, more than almost any other artist I’ve discovered in the last few years of UA-cam shenanigans, how genuine and authentic he is. Glad you’re enjoying the Devy journey. I think you should listen to “Terria” in its entirety as an album play through. I don’t think there’s anything on there that’s too intimidating, but it’s got some BIG tunes!
I wholeheartedly agree with this!
I would add my voice to this request. Terria is a Devin landmark. But I could say that about a number of the albums....
A great review from you also, Jim, glad to have a couple of proper muso's on board with me for the great, Dev journey.
Jim I waited for you to listen to the whole album with you. Thanks it was great. I'm so excited to listen to Nightwork, but once again I'll wait for you to finally listen to it with all of us.
"Everything Devin touches turns to awesome" - As true as it's ever been.
If you wanna hear even more mellow Devy, check out Ghost, which he wrote in tandem with Deconstruction. Couldn't have two more opposite collections of songs. "Heart Baby" or maybe "Blackberry" could be a good one.
I'd like to get his take on Infinite Ocean. At first it seems pretty repetitive, but with more listens, you start to hear a bunch of little details that gradually swell into a stunningly beautiful, atmospheric, colorful soundscape.
Blackberry makes a great alarm clock, specially if you let the album play out. Sunday morning stuff. One of my favourite Dev toons. ♥
@@feedusafetus Ah, so I'm not the only one! Used to fall asleep to SYL in my stormy teenage days, and now I wake up all peaceful at the first croak of Blackberry. What a journey it has been, with his music always by my side...
Authenticity is why Devin Townsend and Steven Wilson are my favourite artists.
Hey it's a bonus Tuesday and it's Devin Townsend! What a treat!
I think this was the video that was posted and blocked last week.
Really loved his music, especially the lyrics. Thanks Doug!
I was introduced to Devin Townsend while on vacation in the Caribbean by a fellow rocker vacationer I met! It was the age of Ipods and he shared Biosphere. I loved it instantly and bought the album when I got home and I still listen to it. I love these pieces! Smooth but still with an edge and power! Thanks for telling about the upcoming album!
Beautiful songs, fun reactions. Much appreciated Doug
Great new stuff! I think I'll pick up this record when I can. Thanks, Doug!! BTW, I love the album display in the background -- especially Underfall Yard and Hand. Cannot. Erase. Also the new remix of Animals!
Love your reaction so much! Puts a whole other layer of understanding Devin's brilliant music 🤩
Devin is so versatile....the guy is a musical treasure!!!
Love this. Thank you, Doug. Can't wait for Devin's new release to drop!
Just got my tickets for when he visits my city in March. Watching this because you will probably make me enjoy that concert even more. Keep it up.
Another good video, thanks. Just noticed the Steven Wilson album Hand Cannot Erase there in the background! Nice 🙂
Amazing new songs from Devin. Call of the Void is based on a song called Can you hear the sound by All India Radio. Devin got permission to use the basic chord sequence and put his own spin on it.
Loving the first two tracks. I’m excited for the rest of the album.
Another great one Doug ! Thanks 🙏
what an album ! it grows on me very much. enjoy music Doug, enjoy life! thank you for theese vids.
What great music. I would really enjoy listening to that on a long road trip.
I hope you do a lounge episode with this I'm so excited for this album release!
Thanks for sharing your opinion about this great new album songs, I really love what it represents and waht it makes me feel, but seeing you reaction to it makes it more valuable and complements due you are great musician and great person, thanks again for sharing your reaction I really enjoyed the journey. 🤘🏿
I would absolutely love to see you interview Devin, Doug! Make it happen! 🙂
Would love to see your reaction to Lightworker and the rest of the album Doug! Really loved your interpretation of these beautiful songs.
Endearing. Great word for this music.
thanks mate, this album is superb
I am having a hard time with the new Devin stuff. This video helped some. Your take makes me think about it more deeply. But that is Devin of course.
Considering he's made a whole ambient album, I don't think there's any level of energy Devin hasn't mastered. I do love his prog metal, so I hope he still brings some heat.
Worth noting, my fav Devvy album is Casualties of Cool. One of the greatest albums of all time. Gothic country, prog ambience 😅; definitely worth hitting up.
I agree , my wife is fond of this album 😂😂😂
I discovered Devin via his project Strapping Young Lad and the song Detox. Perhaps narrow minded of me, but I didn't imagine we would end up with this kind of music. Nice anyhow. :)
I liked Call of the Void, a nice mellow tune. I really like cool scenery. Just saw this one recently on another reaction channel.
I've heard Devin's stuff right from Strapping Young Lad. Every single album he has released is just way out there. But saying that, Ziltiod The Omniscient is my all time favourite.
"theres a lot of debris in the sound"
Thats what makes this album so wonderful. The debris flows wonderfully through the space of the music! Every sound fits so perfectly its kinda uncanny.
I took this train ride through the rocky mountains in Colorado one time, the video and music took me back 💭🚂
+ to what Devin genius proposes to us, there is Anneke's beautiful voice in the background ❤
This is the kind of music you wanna talk about when it's finished
Great work as always Doug, on a totally different bent could you review Dave Brubeck Take Five? I know it’s written in 5/4 time and would love an explanation of that unusual signature. Thanks!
Always prefer his earlier Strapping Young Lad heavy stuff but even with the more modern Devin you can't help but appreciate his Authenticity. You always believe every word he's singing. One of Modern music's greatest.
'Call O The Void' is, for me, the standout of the album!! 😎👍
I have listened to this band for the first time this week. I was shocked. Would love to see your reaction to this, considering it has a strong classical style:
- Haggard, Of a might divine
Call of the Void gives me vibes of M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming if you swapped the synth for guitar. And the emotions it instills have the same intensity as that album as well as any of Devin's other emotionally hard-hitting songs.
Doug and I left Earth years ago we are mere facsimiles of ourselves now.
Call of the Void besides being great musically, is visibly stunning!
Ok I’m really digging Call of the Void. Great song!
Darby Todd I think on drums for these 2 tracks.. Darby was on Devin's last European tour including the 2 night RAH gig earlier this year..
Doug, do you ever breakdown Classical music, for contemporary music listeners, as a Guitarist I find your music theory breakdowns, very insightful, as does my son, who learns Classical Piano by ear, suggestions, Hungarian Rhapsody 2, Moonlight Sonata, Life by Einaudi. Just a thought.
How the hell have I missed this reaction? Well, better late than never I guess.
Doug, can you do a reaction to a dream theater song in the presence of enemies both parts, It’s an absolute epic
If you enjoyed these chill cuts, do some off the Casualties of cool, a side project he crowd funded.
You should try to schedule an interview with him!
Hey Doug really enjoy watching you're videos especially the Pink Floyd reaction. I seen you've reacted to Dark side of the moon, Animals, and Wish you were here albums if I'm correct. So I was wondering if you could react to Pink Floyd's The Wall it would be awesome. Anyway keep up the great work.
Doug loves usic.
There is no one else who takes you on such musical journeys.genius.check out ghost.will not disappoint
I can't pick anything negative about this incredible album, that Dev, roar in Equinox? Dayum.
Man, do Flying Colors, please!
I have a suggestion that you may like. "Odyssey" by the Dixie Dregs.
😎
Try Mr Bungle
Manowar:"Heart of steel" or "The crown and the ring" (with orchestra or not)
Regarding the musicians, there's a lot of the same people who played on Empath and the following tour, including Morgan Ågren, Diego Tejeida, Mike Keneally among others.
Spent på hvem han har med seg på scenen i februar 😁
@@TheCpEric Ja, jeg håper det blir noe a la Empath-turneen, for den var helt fantastisk!
Hey, If you like his vocal range... check out KINGDOM... nuff said!! 😎👍
In ua-cam.com/video/zyLWFoukbFA/v-deo.html Devin sums up who's on Lightwork.
It would be awesome if you checked out some buckethead sometime. If you like Steve Vai you'll enjoy him quite a bit. I recommend Soothsayer (as all people would lol)
Please check out Curtis Mayfield - Think...you will like it
Getting Muse vibes!
Sounds like Bowie.
Do lightworker now. Good song
Check out Christian Metal band Golden Ressurectoin songs See My Command and The Final Day. They are tight. Swedish I believe.
Please, react "2020 em uma música" is a medley made by a brazilian multi-instrumentalist. SAY HELLO TO BRAZIL!!!
I love your videos can you make a reaction video for some buckethead songs? Please make a video for his song called soothsayer :)
This album is such a troll, because a lot of it is this very laid back, often times just country stuff, but then there's two tracks which just hit you like a brick. Especially Factions, which follows one of the mildest tracks on the album and starts with a full volume blastbeat out of nowhere
Please don't overlook 'Heartbreaker' on this album...
I've always found Devins albums put the voice too far in the back. His live stuff is pinnacle. Still love him though.
The charismatic voice also did a reaction video to "call of the void" recently.
Funny thing is, that the parts she found most endearing, you completely missed.
Mostly because you were talking through them.
But hey y'all to each his own.
It's easy to point out what Elizabeth finds "endearing" because well everything is endearing. It's kinda ridiculous.
She's a hack tbh, a lot of her "reactions" are phony and exaggerated immensely.
Devin Townsend is awful, in my opinion. Music, in general, would be so much better without him!
Go away you clown.
Just don't listen to his music then?
I get nothing from it either. I'm sure it's just a taste thing, and I don't have any.
Joker, ignorant or both?
This is terrible bait, tastes like shit lol. Don't fall for it ppl
This is the best album of the year until now. I'm only waiting for Steven Wilson to beat this.
Terrible music. I listened because I dig you but wow that's bad.
