    My parents bought a new Mk1 focus in 2001. They used it for years before it went to my younger brother, and then he kindly gave it to me when I had a new job with a significant commute and I needed a car. Eventually it went back to my parents who drove it as their second car, and in the last few years it was given to my sister in law. It has done 300,000 miles. Besides the front strut bearings going and the driver window and A/C being temperamental, it has had no mechanical problems at all. The original battery lasted nearly 180,000 miles and the gearbox, engine and everything else are still going strong. Not a bad car!

    Only the people who have owned this car, know what it is. We have one in my family since 2004. Not so many things gone wrong with it, and it still goes like a champ after misshaps (me learning to drive in it, handbrake turns, chacing peugeot 106's on mountains, being involved in a serious accident), but with cheap repairs and it still goes strong!

      I must agree with you on that point. Our focus has been in the family since 2003 and it is simply marvelous and just seems to keep on going without fail. Utterly superb piece of engineering.

      Yeah they suffer from rust on the back wheel arches cause of the design that it has that carpet thingy as protection, but it isn't so hard to fix though.

    Very good review. Bought a MK1 Focus for first time now. 3 doors, silver with 1.6 zetec engine.
    I have driven a lot of cars in the past and
    I'm absolutely happy with my choice. The handling is a dream and it doesn't seem slower than my two Ford Puma 1.7 I had before - although there should be 24 PS less. I really hope that this car will last for a long time.

      I replaced my unfortunately rotted 2002 3 door Hatch 1.6 Zetec Trend with a 2003 5 door Hatch 2.0 Zetec Trend. Fuel consumption approx 1/2 litres more but twice driving fun ! Best time 8.2 secs to real 100 (speedo105) with esp off - that's on par with the ST version. Really amazing for only 130 hp. Handling especially in corners is a real dream, too.

    I've been driving for more than 30yrs, owned a lot of fast cars, but can say hand on heart the Mk1 Focus is the best car I've ever driven. I bought a 2000 mk1 1.8tddi last week, 240.000k new battery, new diesel 'atomizers?' new front tires full allignment report, new mot, only 750 euro. I am amazed with the ride quality, it is dead straight, cornering is scary fast, spotless interior without any cracks or wear on the dashboard, amazing bootspace for a hatch, the only downside is some rust on the fenders and the very poor seating which make long distances less pleasent. But I am very happy with it and hope to keep it for 5 years.

Car snobs hated them because here was a work-a-day car that was better than a lot of more expensive cars in driving satisfaction and handling. Last one I drove was a hire car down in Cornwall in about 2008 and it was a blast on those great B roads and it was sure footed as anything. +Nicolas046 Nice choice on getting the 4-door saloon/sedan. I've had my 2002 1.6LX saloon for over 5 years now. Before it the longest I'd had a car was a year, and I've had BMWs, Mercedes etc. etc. The Focus is, by a long way, the best and most reliable car I've ever had, it's been faultless, which a lot of people find surprising considering my car was built in Spain. The only things that have gone wrong on it were an idle air bleed valve which caused the revs to hang up at junctions and the factory CD player stopped taking CDs, but they all do that and at least it packed up when there wasn't a CD in it. It lives outside all year round, I live near the coast and it hasn't deteriorated bodily at all, even in places where paint damage has left bare metal, the original Colorado red paint is still bright and shiny. I think the saloon handles better than the hatchback, the hatches have always felt a little more skittish to drive to me but I think the extra weight at the back of the saloon makes it a bit better planted. ..

    • @CarambleTV
      @CarambleTV  8 років тому

      +gosportjamie Sounds good, I've not driven the saloon but often saloon variants of cars tend to handle a bit better that the hatchbacks because the bodyshell is much stiffer. I always assumed they would be abit rubbish. But I drove my mother in laws 2001 automatic 1.6 3 door Zetec afew times last year and was amazed by how natural and crisp the drive was. Every turn, lane change, braking and the 1.6 with auto box hitting kick down was happy to sing and whisk it to 70mph on the dual carriageway very nicely indeed.
    It was funny how a 19 year old run of the mill car with drum brakes, corrosion underneath and probably afew worn bushes and ball joints could drive so well.
    The jatco/mazda/ford 4 speed automatic box started playing up this year (common solenoid problem) so we sold it for £110, but I was very pleased to see on MOT history check that it's still on the road so must of been an easy cheap repair. Though I would prefer a cable operated bonnet release, the Ford badge key hole is abit feeble and tricky to use.

    I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1 Owner 1.6 Ghia saloon last year, I’ve had 8 now, and although they were all (until this saloon) completely shot to pieces, you could still feel that magic, that addictive handling and feel that nothing else has. My dream car always has been a MK1 Focus RS..... I want one even more now.

    The underpinnings of the focus mk1 are indeed very good. if you happen to find one in good and non rusty condition (getting rarer each day) it actually really deserves to spend some money on new tires and inevitable chassis replacement parts (shock absorbers will be toast, as well as many bushings). driving wise it will feel like a much younger car when in proper condition. more firm audi a3 8p than dandly golf iv like. oh, and it will probably outlive all of said audis T(f)SI engines...
    avoid the 1.4l, its slow. the 1.6 is okay with good fuel economy, the 1.8 is surprisingly quick and a good choice. the 2.0 can get thirsty in town.

    I'd argue that trotting out the the "Mk5 Escort is crap" line is just wrong. True, the Mk4 was legendarily rubbish but Ford took the fully deserved criticism to heart (for once) and did a reasonably decent job of re-engineering the platform to make the Mk5 the car that the Mk4 should have been from day 1. It was no Focus for sure but it's certainly no worse that the rivals of the time (the Mk3 versions of the Golf and Astra). I also realise I'm commenting on something that's five years old.

    • @CarambleTV
      @CarambleTV  3 роки тому +1

      I read recently that the development guys at Ford were not sure if they would be allowed to make the Focus have independent rear suspension due to budget constraints, so they spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to improve the standard Escort rear beam. At the last moment they sussed a way to cheaply produce the rear suspension components (stamped rather than cast) for the Focus to give it what they wanted, but what they learned from trying to make the standard beam setup better they did actually put onto the later Escorts which significantly improved it.

    Got about 126k on my '04 1.8 Focus Edge. Had it from new - put full WaxOyl treatment on it straight after. Replaced the cat (rotted), front n/s wing (ditto) - got a really solid one in the right colour (!) for £30, bolted straight on. Honestly can't think of anything else it's needed apart from consumables. New oil + filter every 10k.
    It's starting to feel a bit baggy now, and it rarely sees north of 3.5k on the tacho. Actually there's no need - there are useful squirts of torque at about 2.5k - 3k for 2nd, 3rd and 4th that whisk it up to 60. There's more power higher up, but I've never felt that happy using it - it's comfort zone is obvious, and in any case, it gets thirsty when worked hard. Like the guy said, I'll run it until it crumbles around me. Reckon I've got a couple of years left before it'll need any welding - then I'll scrap it and maybe get a Fiesta ST. Having said that, they've really chucked the salt around this winter - bit worried the annual spring hose down is going to reveal all sorts of cosmetic trauma. I never wash it and the kids have trashed the interior. It's a pit, a shed, and looking grimmer by the month. But I can't get rid of the damn thing. Never usually get sentimental about vehicles - certainly never refer to them as "she" or name them. This Focus has been bloody dependable though, and there's loads of feedback coming up through the front tyres. If you can be even remotely smooth on the controls, it handles decently and is pretty forgiving. After 14 years I think I'm nearly ready for something else though. ; - )

I could've run it for longer but the MiL's car came up for free ('07 Prius) so it was a case of one in, one out. The Prius justifiably gets a shitload of stick, ditto their owners, but one things for sure - they're ridiculously comfy. The seats are cosseting and soft, and the suspension is like air not spring. Incredible. Sure, it's soggy and slow - but if you're not in a hurry they're plush and lovely. The full auto box dodgem car thing is mad. A child of three could drive this thing. Some of the trim and interior fitments are flimsy, but the paint seems thick and there's no rust on the shell (bits underneath though. I like it a lot - as much as my old Focus? Probably, yeah.

      Not the quickest... but still got the decent chassis. Would only bother if insurance was some sort of issue on the 1.6

    I got a 2003 1.4 for £50. £150 to put it through an m.o.t. Thats £200 , all in. That was in November last year , no problems apart from back exhaust box and centre section exhaust , front will be done later! I can't ask for a better car! 163.000 miles on the clock , still quiet engine at 60!.

    I can't disagree with a word you've said. My 20yr-old Mk1 1.8 Zetec 3-door is soon to make a trip to the scrapyard. It's done 69,000 miles only and has a very tired fuel pump but the subframes are starting to look like Swiss cheese. Other than that it has no mechanical issues (maybe slight play in a trackrod end). The downside is that the road fund licence is now £255 per year. My only quibble with the car is the complete lack of rearspace ventilation. But as my local garage said - this is the "greenest" car around - how many cars have most people had in 20years? - all built at a substantial carbon cost. The end of this month will be a sad day.

    I dk what is goin on around there, im from portugal and here a focus tdci 1.8 115cv, 2 seats goes around 3000€. I bought mine for 4200€. But has compomotive wheels, brembo brakes and it's from 2002. I dk how you can pay 500£ for a car like that. I paid 4200 and i wouldn't sell it for 7.

    I missed an estate version for 1500 pounds with 100k on the dials... on monday I'm picking up a 1650 pound one with 144,000km with a brand new clutch disk and timing belt. :D I hope so. same day i checked a 1994 escort in red with a chain belt and a gape-grill-style design, and I spent some time figuring how to modify the front by gluing/riveting on a laser cut grill... gave it a miss :D

    One of the best fords ever. i owned one from 2001 to 2015. It would have lasted longer if i had looked after it better towards the end of its life.
    I replaced it with a mk 3 which was a real money pit - failed steering twice and tdi injectors. An absolute disaster. Ford need to get back to producing more robust designs in future or they will loose market share to either the premium brands or the korean manufacturers that offer better value.

      Yes MK3 not got the best rep, especially the early Ecoboost engines. Post MK2 I highly recommend the 3rd Gen Mazda 3 2.0 Petrol.

      My first focus was a 1.8 petrol zetec, the mk3 i bought was a 1.6 tdi, expensive to repair and faults very difficult to diagnose. As i said a disaster! Its interesting you said the petrols have issues also. It all adds up to poorer quality standards by ford. Increasing complexity is no excuse , other manufacturers can do it.
