Thank you so much. Remember watching your videos when I first got my first core set. Very informative and fun at the same time. The best channel for Arkham Horror lcg fan
Thanks for the comparison! I just bought a revised core box after recently getting back into the game, and was going to give my existing core set to my son so he can have a second one for better decks. The changed art makes me rethink that, though I could always swap out cards with the art that I like, I guess. Love your videos!
Thank you for the great video. I recently saw some people playing the newer edition and was concerned as to if i should buy it or not. I dont have to. I actually do like the older art as opposed to the newer art. The old art feels darker, which is what i feel like the game tries to emit, and with the new art, in comparison, i dont feel like it is up to the same level.
My guess for the artwork change on the characters is that the women were either scared or doing something stereotypically "woman like". While I understand some of the changes, some are strictly worse from an atmosphere perspective like Agnes' Dark Memory. It doesn't look like she's having a traumatic recall, but like she's casting a vicious spell. Same for Wendy's Abandoned and Alone, the original really sells the despair. The new one it looks like she's not that bothered at all. Overall they also added more women to the art, which is welcomed. I will miss my Cat Burglary though :c Other than that they generally made the art less creepy in some instances, like First Aid or Medical Texts. And now I don't understand what Hard Knocks represents anymore. The new art is a mixed bag on my end, I'll probably mix and match with the old in my collection.
A couple of the choices of the revised cards confuses me, such as 'Hard Knocks' and 'Will to Survive'. The art isn't bad but doesn't have much thematic connection to the card names as the previous art.
All the extra Knife, Emergency Cache, and Flashlight are very useful as a genuine card back for the Parallel Investigator print-and-play (print slightly smaller only the front on thin paper then combine with perfect fit clear sleeve). Roland's Directive will take out quite a lot of them. I think when Parallel Wendy is released, remaining Knife, Emergency Cache, and Flashlight would be just enough for any need in deckbuilding.
Excellent comparison! You know exactly what I think most people would be interested in, such as the new card arts; superb slideshows there by the way! And of course your patented humorous and highly entertaining manner of explaining stuffs! 😅 Damn tiny fonts, indeed.🤣
Exactly the same thing happened to me.....I am just going to keep and play all the original stuff I bought as the differences are so minimal if any to the gameplay.
Very good comparison review guys. Much appreciated. One thing I would mention is the plastic inlay (like the one in Marvel Champions) - if you fit the cards in snuggly the cards in the bottom corner of the partitions start having their corner edges turn in (due to insert corners being "curved") - This makes the card corners bend and so don't sit flat then in a deck when playing. Bad design in my opinion.
Great video as always. It looks like a lot of the artwork (outside of general touch-up) that was redone reduces gore and alcohol use. I wonder if this was a move to make the game more approachable for younger audiences or if FFG was responding to complaints about the (albeit not very) adult themed artwork.
Arkham Horror is such a kid friendly theme. The gore and alcohol seemed really out of place in the setting unlike the insanity, death and creatures of horror. They are the stuff of pleasant dreams. It amazes me what people complain about. Guns good. Gore bad. Alcohol bad.
Thing to note which I have noticed is that some of the weakness cards have only one copy in the revised core set and if I am not mistaken getting two original core sets would give you two copies of each weakness. The basic weaknesses that have only one copy in revised core box is as follows: stubborn detective, mob enforcer, silver twilight acolyte, haunted, hypochondria, and psychosis. The revised core box does come with two copies of amnesia and paranoia. Not entirely sure why this is, but it appears to be the case. I am new to Arkham horror so perhaps there is some reason for this. Another odd thing of mention is it does count the player aid cards (5 in total) towards the player card count, so it is more like 240 actual player cards for deck building.
One thing that I completely missed with my purchase of the revised core set was that the cards with the new art don't match their experienced counterparts included in other expansions. I was all aboard for the new art but I had to come to the conclusion that the upgraded Unexpected Courage from the Stella Clark expansion for example still featured the old art. These discrepancies really bothered me and ultimately made me purchase the old core set anyway. So if you're sensentive to art consistenty like me, you might want to think twice about getting the revised set.
@@ArkhamChronicle what about current reprint of all the cycles into "campaign" and "investigator"? Is art changed in Dunwich cycle to match revised core set or is it the same as old hence matching the old set?
So... with the art for Guard Dog changed... does this mean that whenever the upgraded one gets really published it will have the new art? Slight collection confusion (though I think I'll deal), but hopefully not TOO tricky to still instantly recognize an upgraded version of your first deck. This IS after all the same picture with a better-cared-for dog...

Ok, here’s the deal. I have one original core set, that’s it. My wife and I gave the game a go during lockdown and decided that maybe it wasn’t for us. I was given Mansions of Madness as a gift and after several plays of that, we’ve decided to give this another go. Now, what to do! Play two player with one core and move on from there to the new Dunwich investigator and scenario sets or get the revised core set and carry on from there? Will one core then Dunwich be sufficient? You mentioned, jokingly, a new ‘nightmare mode’ and I’ve been checking around and now (after everyone, pre revised set, was saying you would new two core sets) that you’d struggle without getting the new revised set. Companies making card games putting them in boxes sized to hold the cards from the game seems like such a low bar, thank goodness FF is finally clearing it (I love their games in general, just been long frustrated by this).
I hope this comment will be noticed - Hi, I'm quite new to the game. I got my first core set, tho I didn't realized it's the older version. hello good video I'm new to the world of Arkham horror lcg I found a box of the old core set for $12 dollars I didn't know there was a revised edition I play solo my question is the core I have is enough to play or do I need the revised edition ?
Hello. I'm very new to boardgames and will mostly (well most likely only) be playing solo. Which version should I get? Any advise /recommendation is much appreciated. Thank you.
This is quite a complex game for someone unfamiliar with modern boardgames. We recommend you try before you buy or watch the official FFG tutorial to make sure this is the game for you before investing. If you do want to try but are unsure then try and track down a second hand copy of the old core. That way you will have spent least money if you decide you don't like it. You can always spend more money later :)
Not specifically. What are you worried about? We don't detail the story or anything like that. Its just what you would see when looking through the products after purchasing them.
Arkham Chronicle doesnt want to give their opinion and they prefer to stick to the facts... well it's a fact that the old art was way better, more misterious" and eerie than the new one. Wtf... why ??... and what to expect for all the other boxes coming ? But it's quite clear why they did that ... the long time players/collectors had no reason to buy this new boxes. Now they have one. Companies playing and exploiting fomos behaviors are shamefull. Arkham Chronicle, thanks for all your videos and hard work !
The new art is also more politically correct. Daisy isn't terrified now, she's inquisitive. Agnes isn't doing dishes (women's work) she's invoking her necklace. Skids isn't playing poker (poker's bad?) he's now got a blank stare. Maybe he needs a woman's guidance?
@@urloony It also doesn't make sense. The original Will To Survive had a man desperately clutching a mop ready to face off against some Eldritch horror, the new card has a woman driving a car...
@@bazookajoe-u2w It should also be pointed out that it's a black woman driving the car (Stella Clark). My original comment is a little tongue in cheek, but we certainly do live in a new woke reality. FFG is no different than all of the other companies hopping on the band wagon. See WOTC for example. I'm sure FFG has some behind-the-scenes quota or ratio that they are trying to balance out. H.P. Lovecraft certainly carries his own, shall we say, colored past. FFG is trying to avoid that specter of injustice at all costs. All this reasoning aside, I do like their new approach to laying out a playable starter set and the end of booster packs. I would expect we will see things continue to be "rebalanced" with the re-release of old content.
MJ basically said that they did the art "just because" - they had an opportunity to make some art changes so they took it. The changes do seem to have a slight PC bias, but mostly it seems to be new art for the sake of new art. I personally dislike the new investigator look, but am ok with most of the other art changes, even though it seems someone was slacking on the job when it comes to thematically connecting the card name or theme with its art. Also, if I understood MJ correctly, Dunwich expansion will be pure repackaging - no art or card changes. It will be interesting to see if they at least incorporate the errata.
@Chris I would say, it's rather to serve the prudish than the political correct. Agnes is still a waitress, you are putting a bit too much into that. On the other hand, the old lady on Baseball Bat was sure not an over sexualizing art work, yet it possibly did offend some people because of the décolleté, but not for PC reasons. As did the original First Aid or Medical Texts for people, who want to play a horror game with their 8-year-olds.
So I have the original core set but never had the chance to play. We have a group of 4 and were always told we'd need two core sets to have a good pool of cards to start out with. Is this still true with the new core set? Can I just get the revised one and mix it with the old?
I personally have 6 old core sets and new revised core set, just to allow different investigators to use same cards. So old and ne core together makes a lot of sense!
I've never played arkham horror lcg and I can buy a great package with the core set and the first complete cycle + the mythos packs ,some of the second,4 scenario packs and a storage box for a great price (150 euros). The only problem is that I've seen pretty much everybody saying that you need 2 core boxes in order to really play the game is this true in this case or all these content provides the cards that you needed from the second core set? Is that the same with the revised edition ?
It is NOT the case for the revised edition core set. A big reason they made a revised edition is because so many people were put off by having to buy multiple cores.
I might have missed it but does this core set come with everything you need, or do I still need to buy two of them to have enough cards? I regret selling my collection last year and want to get back into the game but if I can have enough cards buying one revised core set instead of two of the original, I'm up for that.
Yes. The revised core set is 99% strictly better in terms of components than 2x old core set. You do get slightly less of some things in the new set vs two old sets, eg new has 20 horror tokens, while two olds gives 28. But there's plenty of components to run 4 players. There's also (probably the best addition) the new cards and (less important) 2 slightly more copies of the base neutral cards (emergency cache, knife, flashlight, all up 10 from 8) so you can have all 5 of the starter decks made up at once.
As always... an excellent video. Did you notice the size of the text on the revised cards? Both the title text and the header text are slightly larger.
I think the new box is an improvement. Now you have 2 copies o everything, as it should be, and a decent insert. New art is welcomed too. On the down side i dont like the 3-5 resource and clue tokens. You are not goint to use them much or you will losing time exchanging them.
I think, the bigger tokens are among the best upgrades, third only to the Chaos Tea Pot they included and of course the 2 copies per player card. "Rich Preston" or any deck build around Well Connected particular enjoys them. And there are also some scenarios with huge doom thresholds or large accumulation of clues until you spend them, where these get in handy. The time spent exchanging them is quickly saved, when you consider, how much time it would take recounting the tokens otherwise.
@@Ruskettle I agree. Why does a new player need to know about things like tarot slots and keywords like alert, which they won't encounter until they buy the respective boxes anyway?
@@scottwallbank4794 It's kind of weird and inconsistent, that they still feature the Double Arcane slot in the "Learn to Play Guide", which is currently featured in only one card from TDE, but not Tarot, which has several cards from the earlier released TCU. And the Reference Guide is for, well, reference. It would have been handy to include the important other keywords in one place.
It makes so much sense to NOT include the new keywords to RR. It would only confuse new players as they might go through all the cards to find an example of a card with Alert. This is a great call on FFGs side.
Honestly, from your uptalk at the end of every sentence I can't tell if your being sarcastic or excited, but a 17 minute video in which you do it constantly is quite bothersome. good review over all though.
Does the old and revised version of the game work with all new expansions for any particular reason? It seems like the version i bought from a target last Fall (2021) is actually the old version of the game, which leads me to wonder if they intentionally sold an obselete version of the game commercially. I have noticed that all copies of the game AND the expansion packs are now missing from target, which even makes me wonder if this change resulted in some sort of corporate issues due to returns etc. a little frustrating to see the truth about the updated box, but i see why the changes were made, playing the original as my first arkham horror game was a nightmare to sort through all the rules, and it was also very odd needing two copies of the core box to add 2 players.
After reed multiple opinions about of how good this game is… I have been trying to look for a reason to buy and immerse myself in this Arkham horror… but when I review the products I feel very annoyed by how FFG abuse in the cost-benefit for their clients… I believe that the first people how by one or two core boxes must be annoyed and feeling abused… Plus if this is the Revised core game… why FFG did not include at least the little content from the returned box ho increase the variety and difficulty of this campaigns… What a waste of opportunity again…
Ok thank you for sharing your opinion… but if I understand correctly this box do not contain de comeback to night of the zealot products right? I mean to give variation to the scenarios right? So if we want to give some replay ability to the game we need to by them apart right?
I bought into X-Wing and then they released 2.0 which would have costed me several hundred dollars just to update my cards and keep everything legal to use. Fantasy Flight makes amazing games but they routinely do so in a way that preys on their customers imo. They don't put enough forethought into their products and end up remaking them. Or they just don't care.
neither, be warned this is the crack cocaine of card games. But if you are set on ruining your life get the new one as it looks better arranged for new players, the old set had a lot of sorting cards out before you started playing, as you had to choose two characters to play (you didn't have enough cards for all the characters to play at once). If you are playing solo or with one other then this is not a problem. Also take my advice and don't take advice from random people on the internet how to live your life.
Lost opportunity by reprinting cards from past cycles instead of adding new cards like they do in the Return To boxes. I've no real reason to buy the revised core the way they did it, but probably would have if they'd put all-new card instead of reprints.

hello good video I'm new to the world of Arkham horror lcg I found a box of the old core set for $12 dollars I didn't know there was a revised edition I play solo my question is the core I have is enough to play or do I need the revised edition ?
$12 is a good price to see if you like the game or not. If you don't you will have saved some cash.
Are all the older packs and expansions compatable with the revised starter, or do I have to wait until the do revised copies of those, too?
All is compatible. You can start purchasing whatever you like today!
Are the taboo cards for the set updated ex: Dr. Milan?
Taboo cards are optional. You download them from the FFG website.
I'm glad they did this. I just bought the revised. Finally a good time to get into it.
There is never a bad time :D
@@ArkhamChronicle but some times are better than others.
Oh no! They made Skids less hot again
you don't have a netrunner or AGoT LCG chronicle channel?
That is correct. Dead games and all that ;)
Question before I watch the video. Do you give a heads up before the spoilers?
Not specifically. What are you worried about? We don't detail the story or anything like that. Its just what you would see when looking through the products after purchasing them.
How many copies are there of Charisma?
Two copies.
If I was to get into the game now, would you suggest 2 old sets or 1 new set?
The one revised is better value new. But you may want to by something cheap second-hand to se if you like the game.
So if I buy the new core set and have the old one can I combine the cards together?
You certainly can!
So I have the original core set but never had the chance to play. We have a group of 4 and were always told we'd need two core sets to have a good pool of cards to start out with. Is this still true with the new core set? Can I just get the revised one and mix it with the old?
You can play four players with just the revised core or add in the old core too for more deckbuilding options.
It's just like this person said! :)
I might have missed it but does this core set come with everything you need, or do I still need to buy two of them to have enough cards? I regret selling my collection last year and want to get back into the game but if I can have enough cards buying one revised core set instead of two of the original, I'm up for that.
I think at 8:39 he explains that there are enough cards now so you don't need to buy a 2nd set
Yes. The revised core set is 99% strictly better in terms of components than 2x old core set. You do get slightly less of some things in the new set vs two old sets, eg new has 20 horror tokens, while two olds gives 28. But there's plenty of components to run 4 players. There's also (probably the best addition) the new cards and (less important) 2 slightly more copies of the base neutral cards (emergency cache, knife, flashlight, all up 10 from 8) so you can have all 5 of the starter decks made up at once.
lol excellent, thank you
You are most welcome! :)
As always... an excellent video. Did you notice the size of the text on the revised cards? Both the title text and the header text are slightly larger.
Did we not mention that in the video?
Are they going to be redoing all of the previous expansions?
With Android:Netrunner, FFG released the revised core set five months before killing the game off for good...
All the campaign cycles yes.
@@markusschmidt9260 It could be, right now I have just played the first cycles. I play two players or solitaire.
I had no idea Wendy was a child till just now.
That's why there is an FBI man in the box ;)
Great video! Why does he speak like that tho?
To get you to comment :)
The cover doesn't seem the same to me? Was it by the same artist?
I meant to ask if it's a different artist.
It is. It's just zoomed in.
Why they skipped adding the most relevant new terms to the new rulebook is shockingly strange! What a weird missed opportunity.
We agree. And no updates to the online versions either.
It's a core set. Putting a bunch of terms from expansions in will just confuse new players.
No more Goatse first aid
Oooo, harsh! :)
Sorry new player here, what's this tarot slot thing about??
The Circle Undone introduced a new slot type. The Tarot Slot.
New Roland Banks and Skids O Tool art are Simply aweful compared to the Old
It is certainly a change up!
@@ArkhamChronicle exactly they are awful. Lucky to find an old copy of the game
Honestly, from your uptalk at the end of every sentence I can't tell if your being sarcastic or excited, but a 17 minute video in which you do it constantly is quite bothersome. good review over all though.
Why can't it be both? Assume it is both :)
It's exactly the same game
Why is the golden rule gone?
It still appears in the Rules Reference. It looks like they didn't want to confuse new players.
It's not gone, it's still in the RR. I guess they thought its inclusion in L2P was unnecessarily confusing.
We don't feel annoyed. We got five long years of play out of our original core boxes.
@@giovannirussildi2603 it's a REVISED core set. It's not new. Why would they do that

This is comment section.
Obviously for anyone can type.
But hope it make you smile.
Just buy 2 used first core boxes for half the original price.
Still less money than buying the new core release....duh.
You didn't answer the question: "I am a brand new player, which should I buy?"
neither, be warned this is the crack cocaine of card games.
We don't. We simply give you the information so you can make up your own mind. :)
Lost opportunity by reprinting cards from past cycles instead of adding new cards like they do in the Return To boxes. I've no real reason to buy the revised core the way they did it, but probably would have if they'd put all-new card instead of reprints.
Well it is intended for new players.
It's the core set. For new players
Nice video, but hard to listen to..
Nothing good is ever easy :D
While you provided a good overview, please stop emphasising the last word in almost every sentence. It makes your videos much harder to digest,
Whatever do you MEAN? ;)
i like it :D
14:13 d..did you just pronounce machete like that
pathetic and cringe
Hey friend. Using the Spanish pronunciation of Machete is a long running gag inspired by the Great Old Ones Gaming podcast, a fantastic listen for fans of Lovecraft, Arkham Horror and Cthulhu. One of their hosts is a native Spanish speaker so that’s how it came about. Sorry you didn’t get the joke :(
