    00:00 Go watch my first video; this tv's problems; difficulties demonstrating white balance on UA-cam.
    02:00 Probe and HFCR discussion.
    07:10 GDRV doesn't work on component/RGB input you have to use 4GDRV.
    07:41 You see me default the service menu. Pre default is uncorrected, post default is corrected. This is the best before and after comparison for my technique that I can show.
    10:18 KV-27FS12 Service manual instructions for adjusting white balance.
    11:42 I finally tell you HOW TO ADJUST WHITE BALANCE...damn that was a long preamble. My wife says I make these videos because I like to hear myself talk...
    17:31 Adjustments to make after setting white balance (color, hue, brightness and contrast).
    18:10 SBRT
    19:39 All TVs have their own personality. Don't try to make your XBR look like a BVM. Let it express itself.
    I recommend watching old Pokemon episodes after adjusting white balance to check the colors. Cartoons have lots of basic colors. It's also a good idea to pull up other test patterns when adjusting white balance. I like to use the SMPTE color bars.
    The TV in this video is in such good shape that only one out of a thousand people will notice that it's off. This video is for people chasing perfection. After making my adjustments this TV has virtually perfect white balance. I am very pleased with the results. Check out the time stamp at 07:41 you can see me hit the default on the service menu and the TV switches from it's original state to it's corrected state.
    It is impossible for me to show you what a white screen looks like with the naked eye. There are layers: The white balance on my camera changes the image; The white balance on your tv changes the image; the white balance on my editing software changes the image. However I tried my best and most lcd screens have excellent white balance, so I think we get close.
    I think it is best, when adjusting white balance, to not set it too bright (for the high end) or too dark (for the low end). In this video, while adjusting GDRV and BDRV, I think I had the brightness and contrast up too high. It will vary with your tv but you want to be able to see the TV change with your adjustments.

    Thank you for the detailed video.
    An alternative to the methods referenced here, is using a SEMPTE SD ECR 1 - 1978 (EIA-189A) color bars to perceptually adjust the white balance - chroma levels of a CRT display. The benefit is that it provides a standard pattern for analog screen and camera calibration, offering the benefit of accuracy more than using just a white screen. Also, it’s possible to adjust the chroma level by activating the Blue Check button most professional CRTs have. In the case of the consumer CRT TVs, most of them don’t have this button. Instead, a Blue Filter designed for this specific task can be used in front of the TV screen. Having an analog vector-scope offers extra visual benefit, if professional calibration is the objective without using a prob.
    The white screen is used in calibration to evalúe the uniformity of the screen.

      I use the blue screen with the smpte patterns to set the "color" setting in the user menu. I used to use theatre gels but I can't be bothered to get them out of my closet. Last couple times I just turned the red and green guns off in the service menu. I got another video on that.
      Never heard of a SEMPTE SD ECR 1 - 1978 (EIA-189A). Have to check it out.

    Hello friend, very good job!
    I recently bought an LG crt, it had a green tint and with your video I was able to adjust it from the service menu, the problem is that the black is not intense, it looks very clear. the brightness does not solve it, it is strange because it looks like this when there is no drawing on the screen, for example in a game that has a black background, it looks acceptable black, but if there is a dark loading screen it looks too light. I don't know if I explain myself. My service menu is different... I get RBIAS, GBIAS, BBIAS, RDRIVE, GDRIVE, BDRIVE. I don't know what the variation will be to adjust the white. I appreciate any help friend!

    Is that tv from late 90s (99ish)? I got one that looks almost like it, though is not XBR and also noticed the bluish greenish tint even if the user menu trinitone was on medium (neutral). Also mine had a heavy red push for dark color (a complete black screen seemed like purple - wine color). I set almost those exact values you mentioned to the GRDV and BRDV, and also GCUT and BCUT. Mine allows me to set red component (RDRV and RCUT) which I did not touch I fixed the red push by upping blue and green component a bit. I don't know if these tvs are supposed to have those tint colors from factory or is really because of the aging of the TV, but now colors seem more neutral and whites seem more white.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  3 роки тому

      Yes. I believe this set is a 2000. You don't want to set your values where I set mine necessarily. You want to adjust them so that you can can get a white screen. Each tv is different and yes most white balance has drifted from where ir was when the tv was new 20 years ago. Most flatscreen sonys do have a bit of a blue tint to the whites if you have trinitone on

    Do you own any pre-1991, more vintagey type CRTs? I picked up a couple free sets, both are very old from 1990 and 1991. A small woodgrain 13” GE (RCA/Thomson) RF only set, it’s actually fun to play NES on it. More of a novelty. Then I got a 20” Old Panasonic with rear composite from 1990. Little tired but fantastic geometry and colors. The problem is that its just so damn hard to find anything newer and fancier like a Wega or D Series. Been dry on higher end CRTs in my area for about 8 months now

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  Рік тому

      No. I only mess with SD CRTs with component or RGB. When I got into CRTs they were free and plentiful so I never bothered with the low end stuff. I really don't like the look of composite or low line count CRTs. Some people do though and that's cool.
      I see high end Wegas all the time on craigslist still. People want $100 or $200 bucks for them now but I still think that's a fair price so long as it works alright.

    I don't know if this was a correct thing to do, but one time I tried adjusting white balance on an LCD TV (should be the same for a CRT) by using a Spyder5Express calibrator. It's supposed to be just for monitors, because it needs to make a color profile that runs in a program in the background of your computer, but during the calibration process it has a live R/G/B meter that adjusts based on what you're setting with the RGB values on your TV (if you have them). In a service menu you do on Sonys. And you can adjust the RGB on the TV until the meter says 6500K perfectly using a laptop or another computer hooked up (the software is running on the computer, but it thinks it's measuring a monitor). This doesn't create a profile you can use, but it helps to adjust white balance. And those devices are only $150 or less, so I thought I'd mention.

      @@riggel8804 It worked! I wish I hadn't of sold it because now I want to correct some other TVs, so I'll probably get their new device sometime. I'll try your method though. It probably works fine, at least for a rough correction.
      By the way, I think your reference monitor, the BVM, looks pinkish, at least it does on my screen. The TV you were correcting did look greenish initially, but ends up looking whiter like the one in vertical mode on the right. It's hard to do this by eye perfectly because the eye gets used to what it's seeing.

    • @riggel8804

      @@msd5808 cool. Yeah I looked into buying a probe but it was expensive (150$ is expensive for me) and it looked overly complicated.
      Good eye spotting the pinkish bvm. Mostly that is the white ballance on the phone I used to record the video which isn't perfect. I have been very pleased with the results I achieved with the method in this video. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

    I found the exact same XBR as you show in this picture. It looked to be in great condition but there was a serious problem with the colors. The primary issue is when I would display an image with a lot of white, the entire tint of the screen becomes green. Then I put a normal picture on and it becomes (mostly) normal again. Have you ever seen this issue before on a crt or experienced it on your xbr200?

    • @riggel8804

      yeah dude. Sounds like your white balance is shifted green. That's what this video is about-correcting white balance. You might want to start with my other video on calibrating color on a crt.

    • @jonjonmia
      @jonjonmia Рік тому

      @@riggel8804 I’ll take a look at the videos and try my best to fix it. Though what I don’t understand is why white displays properly when it is in small quantity on the screen. But when it is over 50% i can visibly watch the colors slowly shift to a green tint. I thought an incorrect white balance would cause a “constant” irregularity with the color(s) not dynamically changing them as they take over different percents of the screen.

    • @riggel8804
      @riggel8804  Рік тому

      @@jonjonmia yea. That's a new one for me. Your issue doesn't sound like white balance. You are right. White balance is just the how the red blue and green guns are calibrated on your crt. It's constant.

      Yeah blasting the brightness and contrast stresses the crt. You might have some caps going bad or another component. Might want to replace any capps around the voltage regulation circuit. Yeah the tube itself is probably going bad if you have to turn the brightness and contrast all the way up. Something is definitely malfunctioning. I have a tired tube that I have to turn the contrast up 90 % but I still leave the brightness at 50%. Good luck dude.

  • @cortbelmont
    @cortbelmont 2 роки тому

    It's really hard to do it by eye, I would say if you try to match it by eye it will be wrong. You need to get a colorimeter to set white balance correctly like the "Spyder 5" that's a cheap one, pair it with HFCR or DisplayCal that's the one I use, then you can correctly set the white balance and color intensity to get color volume and tone right. Be mindful these are just minor corrections the TV is already calibrated just deviates for components age or minor manufacture differences
    These WEGA CRTs have a great color volume and a very good white balance overall (not as good as a PVM) I managed to get a very accurate D65 white tone on my KV-29FA210 it looks really good against the PVM 1953MD that's perfectly at D65. Not all WEGA TVs offer color temp calibration and most of the time the user menu options are not great, Warm looks too orange and medium gives the better balance but not warm enough. I see your TV is on "Cold" that's supposed to be D93 and it should be blueish it's not wrong. D65 is standard for America, Japan used D93 and most analog videogame consoles look good on Cold color temperature, I prefer D65 so everything looks good.

    • @riggel8804

      Im not familiar with d65 and d95 color settings. Are they in the service menu?

    • @cortbelmont
      @cortbelmont 2 роки тому

      @@riggel8804 no, to set them you need a PC connected directly to the monitor, a colorimeter and enter service menu. In the service menu find the white balance controls for red, green and blue intensity. On DisplayCal software select your target color temp and max luminance. I use 120nits luminance D65 temp, then the software displays the white screen or window, your colorimeter will measure the mix of red blue and green then you adjust on the service menu until all are in balance (balance that you set before as D65, you can set D93 colder or D54 even warmer)
      not every TV offers white balance controls my 29FA210 does but my kv-21fs120 doesn't I just use "medium" temp on this one. All PVMs and BVMs let you correct white balance
