That was great. I had a coach in high school that had us switching directions the other way, never taking your eye off the ball. However it’s easy to get your feet tangled up, lose momentum, and potentially not make it to the ball. I’m happy to say that Most of us didn’t listen to him because it felt much more natural to quickly turn your head and shoulders away from the ball, only losing sight of it for a 1/16th of a second. I also feel like it’s important to mention that it’s a lot easier to start with a sprint and slow down to catch the ball, than to initially job and then have to speed up to make the catch. I think that initial acceleration made it a lot easier for me in center.
Hey Justin! Yes, we agree completely about sprinting initially. Easier to sprint to a spot and camp, making a play more routine, than jogging and catching it in stride. You never know how the wind or spin might move the ball just out of reach. It is almost counterintuitive to take your eye of the ball, but you don’t lose as much speed as long as you turn early.
Great Episode Fellas. There are a ton of episodes you can do on out-fielding alone but this is a great start to have that conversation. Playing the outfield is so critical in Softball. I would love to see you guys put an episode together discussing differences of how to play Left Field and Right Field and Right and Left Center. The slice and the cut is so crucial in our game. Reading the ball and how it cuts in the air also plays a role on where you need to line yourself up to make those catches especially in the gaps. Hope you guys continue to roll out more of those maybe getting some of these tournament players or pro players out there to discuss what they do and how they read the ball coming off the bat...etc. Dope episode fellas. Respect Due from Derty Jerzey 🤙
Thanks for the feedback, Cal! We can definitely look into filming some more detailed outfielding content. Any conference players that you feel play a really good outfield who you would like to get some tips from?
You guys got great stuff to start with! A video I'd love to see as a starting player: How to THROW. Especially for an outfielder. I've seen guys with my build or thinner throw so much harder and farther. I'd love to know how!
Thanks! We really appreciate that. We are working on doing a throwing video in the future. Until then we did a video a while back describing our long toss routine. I think that could really help!
That last one is so big. So often people will just kind of jog and pick up balls off the ground during BP but it's fantastic practice for a skill that's generally tough to set up drills for.
That is absolutely correct. I can think of a few players I know that went from complete beginner to serviceable outfielder in a matter of months just because they would take those reps during BP seriously. Thanks for watching!
Use to play baseball all the way up to high school. I’m 32 now and just now joining a Slow pitch team. Checking to see if any differences… Need to practice tracking the ball again… It’s been awhile 😂
Suggestion for future videos is a basic explanation of all the differences between slowpitch and baseball, i.e backside, sit back game, etc. and then the different levels, AA, A, B, C - rec
We have never gone over all of that type of thing in a single video in a single place. I feel like our explanations have been spread across a bunch of videos. We'll put that on our list of future topics. Thanks for watching!
When you're talking about changing direction on a ball you misread, the other thing to keep in mind is to know your hitters, or at least know the type of hitter you're up against. If you're in RF or RC and you have a right handed batter slice one that looks like it's coming straight at you, it's almost always going to tail away (towards the RF line) because of the spin. So if you know that, you can go ahead and run back to your left instead of back to your right by default. Likewise, if you're playing against higher ranked hitters who you know have mean cut swings, and one gets hit what looks like straight at you, you can bet the backspin is going to carry it over your head if you don't start back.
San Francisco Baseball Academy is near Geary and Masonic in the city and is definitely open. I am actually a baseball/softball/strength coach there part time. You should check it out!

@@LeagueNightSoftball Reiterate the importance of charging the ball in the IF. I used to wait on the ball and kept noticing that I would get terrible hops, especially in the later games. I would also be rushed on the throw from time to time. Charging the ball solved most of the issues I was having.
I (Cam) have that issue. I am a converting Infielder and sometime I forget to charge a ball and the hops just get worse the farther the ball travels it seems. I have to actively remind myself to charge the ball.

I meant to say initially JOG* to the ball and then have to accelerate to make the catch

Do either of you go down to the San Jose cages? I noticed most options in the city have closed.

Do you guys know if they do customized hats? Our team just recently got new jerseys but I would be interested in hats?

What about some infield drills and skills?
We are planning to do videos with infield drills in the near future. Stay tuned! Anything particular you would be interested in seeing?

I would love to do a 1B skills video, especially since I could use the help! We'll try and find a 1B expert to teach me on camera.
Yeah number 69
Great tips. The most distracting and horrible audio I have ever heard holy shit 😂what year was this recorded in
