I'm 32 and rode BMX a lot as a kid. I switched over to moto in my adult life but it was really hard to make friends (thick helmets and bike sound dont make convo easy). So I got a DJ and man what a difference - I've met so many people and its such a convenient sport to throw a bike on and off the truck in less than a minute. I won't ever be pro but I've worked up to the xl/black lines at Valmont and I will do one flip-whip before I die
I really enjoyed hearing your story, Mark. I stumbled across some of your trail building videos a few years ago and although I don't watch a lot of mountain biking videos these days I continue to watch yours. You bring a really calm and genuine energy that I don't see often online. Thanks for being so positive and inspiring, hope to see lots more from you!
Love watching your content Mark, you seem so chilled, friendly and polite. It’s obvious you love building and riding and it’s great to see it’s paying off for you! Keep it up brother!
Thank you guys for bringing big mountain freeride to Gobi Desert, China. My life changed when I watched the WTTE.Life is like riding a bicycle,to keep your balance you must keep moving. Life goes on!
It's a great thing you stuck with it Mark. Mtbing was the dark sport....I have ridden since 1996, full rigid Nishiki riding down Chuckanut. I went over the bars a lot back then, but I bounced so it didn't matter LOL. This is a very heart warming video man, a view deep into Mark Mathews and it's very interesting and entertaining. Hope you get back down to Bellingham soon, cheers!
Such a raw, honest and refreshing video. Keep crushing it Mark. As much as people love to see insane tricks and death defying progression I really think your ride style and artistic eye to riding is very relatable and appreciated by the masses. If I could offer any humble suggestion it would be to continue to hit the road and connect with other likeminded content creators and riders. People love raw vlog style content no matter how unpolished. As well, your build style is amazing and I hope you continue to find ways to incorporate that into your income stream because I think you have a lot to offer the industry in that regard. On a selfish side note get your ass down here to Oregon, link up with Carson Storch and continue to build our scene here!
Such a great story Mark! Love the thoughts about doing your own thing and not comparing yourself. It’s been really cool to follow along the past few years and see your channel’s growth and projects. Keep it up 👍
I would love to see you and Remy Metaillier do more collabs. You're both such highly skilled riders but with different styles and strengths. It would be fun to see you both push/challenge the other to do features on their own turf.
Great inspiration! I love filming and editing video, but not comfortable with myself in front of the camera, so I seem to have drastically limited how my videos come off and hit a "funk" of having a creative block and not being able to level up building my channel and gain subscribers. I get the impression my channel is too boring for most MTB'ers. However, since I like editing and filming and documenting my local scene, I AM working on a northeast-based MTB edit that I feel is coming along well. Apparently my comfort zone is filming others and not focusing on myself being in front of a camera to be a YT persona. .... Thanks for expressing your journey!
I used to ride the "dog park" with you guys when I was real young, you were so good and so chill, so proud of you for sticking to it Mark! very inspiring
This video made me appreciate you so much more. Glad you made it. 24 years old and I kind of fell out with riding the last 5 years, but got back into it the past year, and just riding with good people and progressing has made me feel like I actually want to take it serious again, but I know I can't be rampage material lol. Just want to pave a lane like you did, in whatever it is. Such an inspiration.
Awesome story . Keep going man, 30 is nothing! You have another 10 years of pure strength and endurance. Kelly Slater was still winning global surfing championships at 50! Just stay away from alcohol, drugs and sugar!
First of all R.I.P jordy. Mate you are an absolute legend. You have the best style and building techniques that are truly genuine. You truly have an eye for unique and raw features. You don't get to where you want to be in life without sacrificing. Great vid and share of how you got to be where you are now. Big respect!
What an rad story man❤. From someone who’s inspired by the idea of constantly riding and being sponsored, your insight is much appreciated. Thanks for sharing dude 🤙.
Awesome vid! Cool insight into your story. I think lots of us that opt for individual sports have that outcast/ don't fit in feeling. Glad you stuck with it and now get to reap the rewards. Easy to get wrapped up in negativity. I also approve of not comparing yourself to other riders.
Cheers for keeping it real! I feel like I could run into you on the trail and have a good rando conversation with just a normal dude living the dream, yeah man! Then watch you hit a rad jump and me going around it:)
Cheers to you Mark, thanks for sharing your story, and the great inspiring ride vids. I just got my 1st new frame since 1998, which was a 1998 Rocky Mtn Oxygen that I did everything on. I mostly rode Snowden Forrest trails in Campbell River and freeriding/urban assault/building skinny lines. Then I made some friends with riders who rode Mt Washington, Once they got me up there I was sold on DH. None of us had any idea how to get sponsored, most of us sold pot for a living back then and we would spend like 3+ days a week up on Washington, where we would get to meet Jordie, Tippie and a few other legends that we got to ride with a few times. I ended up crashing a whole bunch and wasn't smart enough to take recovery time after bad crashes and concussions, it ended up getting week long migraines and all sorts neck/shoulder etc pain and had to give up the sport for over a decade. It took a long time to recover and fight off the depression that not riding brought me (and living with migraines/pain) Thankfully I found eating raw cannabis which helped my inflammation and migraines, by 2019 I ended up buying an old 2009 Scott Genius and have slowly made my way back to riding Mt Washington and have gotten a couple of my old buddies riding back up there as well. (we saw you up there this year) Now I just bought my 1st new bike frame since that old 1998, I grabbed a 2025 SC Nomad in Teal/pink, thanks to Bitcoin and Pest control. BTC has been the best investment (21 million BTC Vs infinity $ = $$$) And I am super thankful to have found an industry like pest control... if you ever need to get rid of rats or any other pests give Old Island Pest Control a call and I'll give you a super deal ;) Cheers to you, and thanks again
Thanks for sharing this, it is so inspiring and motivating to hear. I´m on a diffrent but similar journey and sometimes it´s really hard to keep going, even though I´m not very consistent with my content, sticking with mountainbiking got me into some great photo- and video-projects, small sponsorships, getting to work as a worldcup mechanic and coaching some worldcup athletes. But still it is really hard to see the silver lining when you can barely sustain your lifestyle as a student. So thanks this means a lot to me!
@@MarkMatthewsMTB I did Brutus and sideshow back in the day which look 100x sketchier (they where back then anyways). Maybe next summer! We still gotta ride sometime. I’m trying the new Lewis brakes out on my bike
Really inspiring Mark. Thanks a lot for sharing. Couple of ideas for that passive income you're looking for: 1) Build your own property with trails and lodging. Just like BKXC and Seth have done. 2) Trail construction company. With your connections and following you could just take charge of getting new jobs and have a team of builders actually doing the work.
Mark is my age and I was hitting Mainwaring jumps back in the day and Mark and his friend showed up. Mark was super kind and encouraging and invited me to his friends lukes house. I thought I was good until I went there and saw Mark and his buddy going huge. The level and size of jumps these guys hit even at 16/17 years old the camera never does justice. It is tech, huge and gnarlier then you could ever expect. But he was also nice to us guys that weren't on his level. Props to him
I became a pro at 30, procrastinator... Things get better at 40 😂 Seriously your story is pretty inspiring, tbh I always wondered where you came from I didn't look further, pretty cool man 😊

one of the best videos i have seen been honest about your journey.

Thanks Mark! What a great video! Really appreciate you doing so much for the young mtb community. It inspires me to get out there and do the same!
Thanks man!
I knew a lot of this story but really inspiring to hear it all from the start to today. Keep it going buddy.
