One can see hundreds of them mostly used as forts as the region is an active border area between Tibet and China where there is frequent migrations, wars between Chinese, Tibetans and Mongols etc over hundreds of years. Some claim that region Gyarong is also known to the source of archaic Tibetan language. Gyarong was visited by the most famous Tibetan Translator (Tibetan and Sanskrit) BeroTsana during the 8AD as he was exiled by the king for the false allegation (romancing the queen) made by some ministers who hated the increasing influence of the great translator in the court.
