      To those outside the UK - roasting here means mid 20C's and a heat wave is when it reaches 30C lol. I love being British and don't have an issue with our weather here but let's face it, most countries would consider this weather as an ideal day to go out for an afternoon run.

    The UK has quite a northerly position and Glasgow sits almost on the 56th parallel, but winters are generally not too severe thanks to the gulf Stream.

    The cone on the wellington statue used to be pranksters, the council kept taking it down until eventually they stopped as people just kept putting it back on, realising it was more dangerous to keep "inviting" people to climb up and stick the cone back on. People take the piss here though, was walking past it to work last week and there was 9 cones on. The horse also had a cone to make it look like a unicorn, which by the way is the national animal of Scotland. Hope the weather didn't put you off Glasgow too much, we loving getting visitors.

    Hi guys, I'm Glaswegian and I keep coming back to this video, and showing my friends, as its sooooo strange seeing you review our city. I've been to Japan and follow you guys. The beast from the east was great fun, we totally aren't used to weather like that. I got days off work ;) The circle subway was the only transport for me, going one way. Also bread meats bread has moved to a bigger place!

    • @cptnlou6328

      Also, the cone on the statue started as a prank. The council got sick of dealing with it so it became a landmark. Few years ago someone managed to get 16 cones on

    In Britain, flats generally have to the kitchen isolated for fire safety reasons. hence the heavy door

    • @martincurrie6243
      @martincurrie6243 6 років тому

      I'm not complety cogniscent on the latest fire regulations , but most flatd have to have a sealed hallway from the bedrooms to the front door. None of this opening straight into an open plan living space in US apartments. But some newer apartments do this, so I assume they have other fire safety features that means those regs don't apply. I do know you more than two storeys in a house, no room should be open to the staircase and all doors should be fire doors.

    I don't know about Kyde's tombstone but Spike Milligan (a British comedian) said he wanted 'I told you I was ill' on his. When he died his family tried to have that done but the cemetery wouldn't allow it. So they translated the phrase to Gaelic, as the cemetery didn't know what it said now, it was allowed

    yo! The kitchen space is a major source of 'fires' and the door is a 'Fire-rated' self closing door designed to isolate a fire in that room and enable you to safely escape, especially if there is only one exit from the apartment and/or the kitchen opens on to that exit route.

    That plant with the folding up leaves is called a 'Sensitive Plant' Botanical name is 'Mimosa Pudica' They have thorns, grow purple fluffy flowers and produce seeds in pods that you can dry out and sow the following year. As a child, between 8-10 years old I used to grow loads of these plants in our green house and sell them to neighbours for 10 shillings (50 pence) to make more pocket money.

      Did Charles Dickens have snow imported to set the mood in A Christmas Carol???

    • @solatiumz
      @solatiumz 6 років тому +1

      @John Doe - the higher areas of the British Isles tend to get snow every year as Mike has mentioned; this is less than 5% of the UK. Scotland, being the northern most country of the UK is more likely to get snow, Wales is also more likely than England to get snow. England is the most densely populated and so is a few degrees warmer around the towns and cities and so snow does not last as long.

    Why is the cathedral so dirty? Well it has been standing there for nearly 900 years. It probably picked up most of that during the Victorian era when Glasgow, like everywhere, was thick with smoke and smog from all the industry and residential chimneys. During the 80's and 90's it was the thing to sandblast our sandstone buildings to remove this and get that shiny clean. The trouble was they found out later that that process did a lot of damage to the stone work which made it vulnerable to the elements. A big regret. Thank goodness they didn't do this to the cathedral!

    Cool vid, thanks for visiting. The Beast from the East was pretty exceptional and there were 17 fatalities in UK alone, nevermind across whole of Europe. It wasn't totally normal for the trains to be off that long, there was a red alert on the country warning people not to travel. There was very limited services.
    Remember also that Scotland has nothing between it and the arctic winds, this is what makes the Scottish mountains so dangerous(even though not very tall by int standards). the ice cold winds freezing everything up can be far more of a problem than some snow.
    Basically you came at worst time but glad you still enjoyed it.

    If you want to do something you can only do in Scotland then I would recommend just hiking in the Highlands or visiting an island of your choice. Perhaps you already have? The landscape is unlike any other. It's broody and severe - but in an astonishing way. It's not cutesy and idyllic like the English countryside. Neither is better or worse, just different. I'm not even Scottish but I still go up as much as I can because of it. Also, on the Irn-Bru, the government has forced companies to reduce the sugar content of the drink, replacing it with sweetener. It now tastes disgusting! I am still angry about it!

    The Irn Bru, more of that is sold in Scotland than any other soda including Coca Cola. Personally love it It tastes a bit like a cream soda that you would find in the states. Missing home but good to see the changes to our favorite city. My heart belongs to Glasgow.

    Mirrors are green~ I don't remember the exact explanation but if you've ever walked into a room with a large mirror in front of you and behind you, you can see the green toward the edges.

    Oh I love rutabaga, so flavourfull. But no Kyde, you can hang your stuff on the heater in the bathroom, but if you don't, it heats the room. It is quite common in Europe. 😊 it was cold because you hang your stuff on it. Thanx for the great and loooong video. All thumbs up

      Turnip and rutabaga are different. Turnip has a stronger taste and white flesh, rutabaga has a milder taste and slightly orange flesh.

    Your kitchen door is a fire door. That's why it's so heavy. It's designed to isolate a fire in the kitchen so that it doesn't spread to the rest of the building.

    I agree with you about the bathroom. I had one of these in an Airbnb in England last year. It's ability to move seemed to offer no advantages an ,in fact, can be dangerous. Grab rails on the bath tub wall are definitely a must. I hope you had a non-slip mat in the tub. This configuration seems to be a recent designer fad.
