Muslim women discuss removing their hijab at work: 'I feel so guilty'

- Following the ruling by the European court of justice to allow employers to ban religious symbols in the workplace, three Muslim women in Spain, The Netherlands and the UK talk about their experiences of looking for work while wearing a hijab. They discuss the pressures they have felt, the changes some of them have had to make, be it a complete removal of the scarf or adapting their headgear, and reflect on the complexity of their decision.

Precisely. In Arab countries, they would be offended if Western women show too much skin. Why should we change our whole lifestyle and work customs? In the West we have our own identity and way of life, just like in Arab countries they have another way of life. And me myself as a Muslim living in Saudi Arabia a foreign woman isn’t obligated at all to wear a hajib they can wear whatever they desire as long as it doesn’t cross the borders of modesty .

Why is it so important to show your religion identity to others. Is religion a business between you and your God.
peace be upon you sir/ma'am. It seems there's a slight mix up in the understanding of hijab that the woman in the video conveyed. Hijab is a direct commandment from god for women to dignify and protect themselves by covering up, not just a religious symbol. Muslim women wear it because it is a commandment from god that we follow, just like any other religious commandment. Hope this clears things up :)
Asha Mahamud: oh puhleeze, every religion thinks they're chosen and special, and every leader of those religions claims to have talked directly through a magical pipeline to some bronze-age mythical deity. That's how they traditionally claimed land ownership back then, by claiming authorization from their god, or claiming they conquered the civilzation that already lived, there and owned the land. Your particular deity said in the Koran you should be modest, too. So don't forget to add that you only BELIEVE that happened. You have no proof. No religion does. Interesting, how people bend their religious precepts to fit their own desires. Sad.
And by the way, this covering-up business isn't mentioned in the Koran, only that you all should be modest. Both genders. The rest was interpretation by imperfect imams, who certainly aren't all knowing. And the reason modesty was suggested in the Koran, was practical: Mohammed was receiving visitors all day and night in his own house, and as they walked by the women's quarters, they might see in through the windows, there was a loss of privacy, so different clothing was suggested. But nothing was said about covering entire bodies and faces, not was anything said about making women submissive, powerless, abused, second-class citizens. Men did that, later. Spare me.

My view in terms of the laws and policies of businesses:
Reverse the situation. I couldn't go to many Muslim countries without wearing a hijab/veil/coverings.
In the same way that people from non-Muslim countries wear a hijab/veil/coverings upon entering a Muslim country, same situation for these women in reverse. Many women of different backgrounds and even religions will wear a hijab/veil/coverings to respect the law of Muslim countries. If you don't want to respect the law in the country in which you've come to, then leave. If you don't agree with the policies of a business on uniform and work attire, don't work there. You won't find me visiting Saudi Arabia any time soon for reasons like this and I wouldn't want to work at a Hooters restaurant due to the uniform/attire policies.
My view in terms of culture:
Similar scenario once again. Westerners have their own culture which they are free to live under and promote within their own countries. If you come to any country and bring another culture with you, always expect there to be push back and backlash. If it were a case of everyone accepting everything from everywhere, culture as a concept wouldn't even exist. If you don't like or agree with the culture, don't put yourself somewhere where that culture is dominant. Example: I'm British and I would not go to Pakistan for this reason.
I live in amuslim country and I don't cover my hair ... Please get your facts right.!
Hello, I beg to extend on your argument :-) It's not fair to associate culture with religion & suggest that those 2 words are entirely synonymous. We live in a world where our societies are rapidly advancing, & people can debunk old cultures if they turned & developed obsolete. However, Muslims particularly, cannot choose to debunk religious orders. Wearing the hijab- the command of religion upon practicing Muslim women- is not merely a culture but a statement that one stays true & chooses to be committed to a faith. In my opinion, restricting women the kind of clothing that they wear is not a progression in the 21st century, but in fact, a regression. Simply judging & streotyping them for a cloth over their head is absurd & it highlights the pitiful, negligible open-mindedness among people. We boast to be a liberal society, but aren't we being ironic if we choose to even control what they can wear. Isn't that a primary right, a human right & simply opression?
Similarly, isn't it odd to be the only one in the Middle East wearing exposed clothing/ bikini in a land where everybody covers themselves up? People with social awareness will have conscience & will know that they are attracting unnecessary & the wrong kind of attention if they carry themselves strikingly different.
Islam is rampant in different parts of the world, & will continue to be embraced by Europeans exponentially as it has proved to be a fast-growing religion, so shouldn't we also alter our views & biasedness towards the headscarf & grow to be more accepting & understanding? :-) I think an education on why different religions conduct themselves differently will greatly be beneficial in helping to establish respect & harmony in a society.
Just my 2 cents & I hope that it doesn't offend you in any way. I stumbled upon your view & thought that I could share mine too so we can understand each other better & enrich one another :-)
Give us NOW thé names of those muslim countries. Now!

By the government, sure. By a private employer where interacting with customers is part of the job, that's a different story.
If it's distressing... Why uncover outside of work?
I ask this as a Christian who covers her head.
Because hijab has been made out to be a state between 1 and 0. You cannot take it off for a while. There is a stigma attached with girls who used to wear scarf and then later took it off. If you cover yourself, either you have to do it at all times or you just don't. That's what I dislike about the culture of hijab. I am from Pakistan and most Muslim women use any scarf, coloured and printed, to cover their heads. Many of them don't wear hijab but sometimes cover with a "dupatta", which is a loose long rectangular piece of flowy fabric draped around the neck. Women just cover their heads when it's the call for prayers as it is considered disrespectful towards "azaan" if you have your head uncovered. Hijab is mainly a cultural thing, popularized by the Arab Muslims. Muslims in my country used to cover themselves with traditional clothing. That's why I don't like hijab
It is just too restrictive and requires commitment, and if you stop wearing it, you always feel guilt and shame. I hate that a woman's faith is reduced to whether she covers her head or not.
For a Christian it is not a religious symbel and women should only cover their head (top) in a church.

WRONG TRANSLATION
here's the literal translation:
"The cleric was saying that women are jewels and if you have something precious, like a jewel; what do you do with it? You cover it to keep it safe. Like wise women should cover."
Cover- not lock up in a safe.
Keep safe- not locked up in a safe.
You can disagree with that statement, and personally I do. But it's 100% not equivalent to let's lock them up and keep them in a safe. I disagree with that logic but I can perfectly coexist with it and see where they're coming from. I felt so bad for that woman esp when she cried, she's having her freedom taken away from her and pressured into dressing in a way she doesn't feel happy with for no reason other than discrimination. I find people who pressure women into taking off hijab equally disgusting as those who force women to wear it. Both can't respect a woman's choice, and both want to enforce their ideas of freedom and respect on women with no regard to what she wants.
If she believed she's a jewel that should be covered, so what? Let her believe that and cover all she wants. She's not hurting anyone or forcing anyone to do anything. Why should that be something that threatens to take her job away and leave her poor and broke and possibly homeless. How unfair, esp from "democratic" countries.
What if a woman is ugly will still be a jewel ?
A woman is not a precious inert, unconscious jewel. Yes, a woman should be protected but not by covering up but by men being respectful.
I do not understand women who considers themselves objects, only to their husbands appreciation, like a jewel? locked in a safe?
The guilt iteself is a symptom of what they are, no of who they are.
Such pain over a rule made by men, not God. Such waste.

In twisting historical fact and theological doctrine out of shape, these guys are contortionists, but they get twisted into a pretzel and cannot extricate themselves from that bind. Now how is it that they attack the Resurrection of Christ by denying His death (on which even secular historians are mostly agreed)? And then they accept His Ascension. Gentlemen, salvation is not a menu from which we can pick and choose.
That shows me how much you know about islam, nothing.
+Khaoula Bouyauzane
It is UNNECESSARY to know about islam, so long as one is concerned with human salvation. Why? Because Christ's Word is the Truth. He has proven Himself through His deeds, that He is the Truth, that He is Salvation. No one could have invented such a Person! His teachings are OFFENSIVE to the natural human mind! They are offensive to MERE RELIGION. Therefore He says that a person must be 'born again', otherwise he/she cannot see the Kingdom of God (see John 3:3 and following). I tell you: NO ONE is 'born' a true Christian by cultural or familial inheritance. This is widely misunderstood, not only by muslims, but also in Western societies generally.
But I know this much about islam, that it denies the central tenets of the Bible----------the Divine Incarnation in Jesus of Nazareth, His death on a Roman cross, His Resurrection from the dead. Because I accept the authority of the Bible without any reservation, it would be TOTALLY ILLOGICAL for me so see any 'good' in islam! Christianity and islam are INCOMPATIBLE. 'Honest' muslims will admit that; the more dishonest ones try to blur boundaries, hoping to catch us off guard. I have seen it.
But I do not need to 'shame' you in retaliation, for speaking and thinking as you do:
(1st Corinthians 2:14) 'For the natural man [or woman] does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they aer spiritually appraised.'

When other religions come to the Middle East we do not ask them to wear hijab in order to work. Here in Kuwait Americans, and other nationalities are free to wear anything they want. People watch you tube videos think that the Middle east lives like stone age. It's not. You just have to come and see for yourself and stop judging. Yes Saudi Arabia are strict, but that doesn't speak to the whole of middle east. Currently Denmark are removing all of the Muslim mosques and I have no problems with that because 1 country doesn't affect or represent other countries. 'Don't go to countries where they don't like you to impose your beliefs on them' - how is wearing a piece of clothing imposing anything on anyone? So it's fine to have Mormons, Jehovah's witnesses, Christians etc literally travelling the world to impose their beliefs and convert people but for a Muslim woman to choose to wear a hijab is a problem. That's a ridiculous argument and makes zero sense.
'Stay in you're own countries and practice your beliefs freely' - sigh. What countries would they be then? Yes there are certain countries where Islam is the majority religion but it is a religion, a religion that anyone from any country can either convert to or be born into.

Muslim women's favorite argument . Hijab is my choice
It's like baby Ayesha saying marrying 56 yr old at the age of 7 was her choice.
How can you say it was your choice when you as women don't have a second choice in your religion . ?
Ok, so here's the thing. Back then, when Muhammad lived, child marriages were NORMALIZED. It was common, and everyone did it. Rich people, poor people, everyone got heir daughters married off very young. It's like a woman marrying a man now. Its normal and accepted. Muhammad was most certainly not the only one doing this, as they didn't see anything wrong with it. Now, with science, we know the detrimental effects of child marriage. But back then, they didn't have this knowledge. We can't accept it, but it was the culture then. Also, everything in Islam is based on choices. If you've ever actually read the entire translation of the Quran, you would know that Islam is founded on you picking right and wrong. That's why we believe in Islam that animals and humans are different: humans have the choice between doing good and bad, and animals don't. When you don't have the ability to fulfil that choice, (say you are getting forced to wear the hijab, like in Muslim countries-which is very wrong by the way) Allah judge you on your intention. Would you have worn the hijab if you weren't forced to? Women, as well as men, children, elderly, etc., all have choice in Islam, whether they can accomplish that choice or not.

@Chris GS-401A thanks for the reply, but my question was based of you statement in which you say 'This is another Country's Law, toughen up Princess.' and from that i'm asking what country law is it since you mentioned that. :)
@Chris GS-401A i apologise that something like that happened to you or anyone. however, what you have experienced was only 2 from 1.8billion. also there is no 'fair deal' in the sense of iran and western countries. iran has a FORMAL written law within its country that explicitly says that the head scarf is necessary. however, there are no rules regulating the headscarves in western countries. maybe in a social aspect but not a country law. so i was asking what country law were you implying. now if there isn't an explicit formal law for headscarves in a western country than you can say there isn't and that you were mistaken, which is fine since we are all humans and i wont say i told you so. :)

And if you can't get a job there, do what the other locals do go and look where you can.
Keep in mind people that asking a women to take off an item of clothing is COMPLETELY different than asking a women to put something on. Dressing modestly is not against anyones religion. But the contrary is NOT TRUE!

I would stand strong in my religion. Im only 13 and I started wearing the hijab when I was 12. And I did it in my own will. But anyways, I would keep faith in the Almighty Allah, because I know that nothing in this universe BUT Allah, can control anything. So if Allah wills for me to have a job, I will no matter what. Toxic comments ⚠WARNING⚠
I've got news for you. EVERYONE has to tone down their identity and appearance to get along at most places of employment, whether it's a hijab or getting rid of punk or goth clothing and makeup, or covering tattoos, or removing piercings that might be unsafe in some medical circumstances, or learning to speak the mainstream language of commerce (which is still English), or wearing something less revealing or sexual to work, including toning down loud cosmetics. It's called being appropriately dressed for your surroundings. If you don't want to change, find an employer who dresses like you... or start your own business where you get to make the rules. Everyone expresses themselves through external appearances, but needs to conform at a business. You can still be a devout Muslim outside of work, and still be modest at work. You have to decide: do you want to feed your kids and pay the rent, or is a hijab, which is just an external symbol, more important than staying alive? Every immigrant has had to decide this throughout the generations, and only recently has this issue become a "me-first" issue, rather than one of assimilation, whether it's the hijab, or forcing people to speak Spanish rather than learning to speak English. You won't lose your individuality just by being appropriately dressed at work. You won't alienate others so much. Or, you can accept that some businesses won't hire you. Your choice.
So much ignorance in the comment section. Unbelievable! Do your research first man!
I wonder if this would be less of an issue if the hijab was tied a bit differently so it looks more like a headscarf as traditionally worn in the west. If a suitably sized scarf is chosen it could give similar coverage, or only a little less, & though less women wear them now compared to in the 1960s I have seen women wearing them at work recently? Dont know, but just wondered if some women might find they can then get work more easily, without having to abandon their head covering entirely?
Its just that people feel anxious around things that look unfamiliar. I just wonder if tying the hijab in a slightly different way so that it seens more familiar but still provides good coverage, might help a bit, or are employers going to object to any headscarf now? Would it be worth trying tying it more like headscarfs as seen in 1950s fashions, which a few women in the west do still wear?

Did it for twenty years and before that no one ever expected that from me from parents or husband. Today I feel and understand the wisdom and I have known that all these things are ordained from our Creator for our protection and self respect& for our husbands respect too, so I’d like to clear this statement in this video by saying , yes we are like jewels to be protected and cherished from the evil eyes and evil talk of people about our characters which damages the entire communities at large and our Religion too, not that Allah demands to evaluate who is better in taqwa/ God consciousness of course.
