this entire interview just reminded me of being stuck in a conversation with someone from work or an old classmate and you have absolutely nothing to talk about except that one thing you have in common. a summary of this interview would be stephen going 'so, are you irish? how are you irish? how's it like being irish? are you still irish? i'm irish. irish.'
Sadly yeah. They're both introverts, Cillian a hardcore one, and I imagine the conversation to be like this if they can't find anything in common. Speaking of which, that whole Irish thing is also something that's weird for Europeans and we don't really know how to react to. If you say you're Irish, it is expected that you were at least born and raised, at least for some time, in Ireland. Americans are really quick to say something like "Oh yeah I'm Italian" because your great grandparents were originally from Italy, even though you have never been in Italy and maybe don't speak but few words of the Italian language. So when Stephen goes "Oh yeah I'm Irish", Europeans, and especially Irish like Murphy go "... No. No you're not. You're American." Makes it even more awkward when that one thing that you have in common, well, you don't have in common.
TL;DR/summary: African Americans are not Africans that's true, but the term, even if incorrect, doesn't make similar misunderstands like "I'm Irish", and it's okay to be proud of your heritage, but it comes across a bit like pretending to be something you're not when you bluntly say "I'm Irish!", especially if you talk to someone who is really Irish, which can be just really awkward if you don't want to offend the other by showing how non-Irish they really are, but that's just kinda inevitable, and so the conversation can be awkward and uncomfortable. It's more of a culture thing how Europeans and Americans define themselves rather than a competition who is the most Irish, but it does cause misunderstandings... and awkwardness. Essay time... just skip it if you value your free time lol. Well "African American" means just black. I mean... it can't really mean anything else. You can't really say "I'm European American", it doesn't say anything. But it's true that American blacks are not any more African than Colbert is Irish, so if you think about it, yes a rather incorrect term. But as it is a term that really says nothing, there's not the same kind of misunderstanding, as in if you say "I'm Scottish" or "I'm Irish", because Europeans would like to go "Oh I visited in Scotland, where do you live there?" or something similar. It's just saying that you are something that you are not. It's just strange. You can say you descend from something, like your family's roots are in Ireland or in Italy, which gives the idea why you love and are interested in Italy, but that does not make you Italian, unless you go and live there for however long I guess. Which is something I forgot to add, that obviously you can say you're Swedish or British if you've lived there for a however long time and adapt to the culture even if you weren't born there, but back to Colbert, if he says "I'm Irish", it means, in the generalized European ear, that 1. you were born and raised (for some time) in Ireland or 2. you moved to Ireland and have lived there for quite some time. It's not a competition, sure, but it's something that can piss people off a bit, as it comes a very wanna-be like when you are neither. I mean... I wouldn't say I'm Mongolian even if I have a bit of Mongolian blood in me, as I know nothing of the culture and I'm born and raised in Finland, as are my parents and grandparents, and if I were to say "Oh cool I'm Mongolian too!" to a Mongolian... I'd just feel that to be very disrespectful. I don't mean that as in "You're not really Irish get out here" thing, but as a... well, a cultural difference between Europeans and Americans when it comes to talking about your heritage, and it can cause misunderstandings and just... strange, uneasy feeling when you have so different ideas what it means to be "Irish". Which, coming back to this interview, can make talking about it more awkward if Cillian doesn't really want to offend Colbert by sort of "exposing him" as not really Irish and accidentally humiliating him by showing how he doesn't know anything about Ireland and make him feel bad, so that "We're Irish, let's talk about it!" can be... super awkward. I left a comment already telling people to watch Cillian's interview with Craig Ferguson and see the difference between a skilled interviewer versus a person talking about Trix cereal.
The only thing with the Craig F interview is that Craig's just being himself - and is able to relate to CM in terms of what they have in common, whereas Stephen always goes with what's different and a 'tell me about this thing I don't understand hahaha' persona. You can't expect Stephen to be Craig, I just wish he'd be himself a little bit more in the interview process. He does these amazing monologues then sits down and becomes a twit.
Anastasia Edunova well what can I say he's Irish they don't like to talk up their success or big note themselves it's just their way very humble people I know this as I'm of Irish descent and my nan was like that she was first generation Irish Australian on her dad's side her mum was born here but her dad Patrick Kennedy was born in Tipperary in Ireland so for me cillian is just your typical humble Irish man I think he just accepts that as a working actor he has to do press to promote things but it's not his favourite thing but it's a necessary evil of the business
Antonio Jr yes he does better there because Craig does a better job of easing him into the interview than Stephen who does nothing to move this along !
@Not Robot Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sounds corny, I know, but a lot of people who are into guys are not that into the more 'generic' handsome guys like the ones you mentioned. And, looks aren't everything. Some people have a charm that is very attractive. That's why there's so many Cumberbitches, too.
Cillian Murphy: A talented actor who wants to discuss a new movie that he is in. Stephen Colbert: Haha you’re Irish lucky charms and leprechauns haha yeah, did I mention that you’re Irish?
And you can kind of pinpoint the moment where SC is just going "ah, screw it, let's just talk about the movie". Which he could have done far sooner since the movie looks really interesting and SC is never afraid of endorsing serious matters. Maybe he was still on the KMKey-high and didn't want to let the audience down. :D
Colbert messed this up completely, not for the first time, unfortunately. Instead of waiting one more second for a real answer (e.g., what kind of music he was playing), he kept rapid-firing silly questions, and Cillian, being polite (sometimes called "socially awkward" in the US), answered those.
YellawayHD I feel ya. I feel the same when they bring on indian actors (I'm indian) and they blabber on about spicy food, bollywood, getting married etc.
Lol. Try being southern. They ask you if you’re married to your brother, can you play the banjo and what’s it like growing up in a racist society. To which I say “bless your little heart”
MyName IsRamen Thing is, everyone knows who the fuck someone like Will Smith or Leonardo DiCaprio is in all nations but not everyone knows who Tom Hardy is, in countires other than US and UK, let alone Cillian Murphy. I speak from experience since people in my country don't know who Tom is. They know him as "the guy who played Bane". Tom is still an underrated actor imo and deserves so much recognition. So does Cillian.
Sebastian Joseph Well it's completely different situations and senarions. Will Smith is 10 years older than Tom Hardy and Leonardo Dicaprio became famous in his late teens early 20s. Tom Hardy only "made" it after 33 (after Inception basically). Now Cillian Murphy is again a different senario. He has been much more selective in his career, has kept a very private life and is also a stage actor.
I've had a crush on Cillian ever since his brilliant subtle portrayal of Jonathan Crane in Batman Begins. He's still super dashing, and he's super precious with his shyness. Oh my god I can't ^^
NO NO NO.....I had a crush on Cillian. I am the ULTIMATE FAN. lol Man i miss seeing him in movies. lol Heck, I went on to read so many Red Eye Fanfics just because of him.
hyacinthdibley Lol maybe we can share him? You can have Rippner, I get Crane? 😀 My crush is 90% about Crane (yes just the fictional character... don't judge me) anyway, I only started paying attention to Cillian's career because I felt he did such justice to the character, even if I felt he was a bit too young for the role (he'd be utterly perfect now 😍). And I love Red Eye and 28 Days Later, and Sunshine too, such good movies! Fuck it, I like In Time too, even if he didn't have that much to do in it. I hate that I still haven't seen Breakfast on Pluto, I know it's amazing 😭 also Broken is super overlooked, the movie was heartbreaking and he was such a darling in it, made it kinda hard to watch 😞 Hopefully getting to see Dunkirk today or tomorrow, Nolan-Murphy combo is always perfection 😄😄😄
By the way I just came from Dunkirk. Holy shit. This is why I still watch movies. I was so into it I didn't even realize I had bought popcorn until end credits popped up. Everybody should see it, it's a real fucking experience that's really bad for your blood pressure. Plus Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy
Every Irish actor/actress can't seem to do an interview in the states without a silly discussion of accents. Every single time. I don't blame the actors either, its the interviewers I blame.
its true lol. I honestly think its just because americans don't hear the irish accent that often, but have a fondness for it, so when they hear it they get excited.
When one sees how large the number is of Australian, Irish, British actors in American tv. Just assuming these are American actors. I look at using a different accent as a great skill, many hire speech coaches.
Irish person getting interviewed by an original American: Accent: Check! Lucky Charms: Check! Leprechauns: Check! Alcoholism: Check! Love Colbert but there was really nowhere to go for this interview but downhill after that, he really dropped the ball with this one.
Cillian is so good. Never even realized he was kind of an introvert because that's something I can say I have in common because the way he answers the questions he was asked are pretty much the way I would have.
hes not introverted he was just done with the idiot interviewer who tried to claim he was irish while at the same time calling dublin a town. i think after the 3rd irish joke in 30 seconds he just mentally clocked out
One of the most versatile actors in the world. Whatever type of character he plays, he delivers. And to add to that, he can do different accents like a champ.
You would understand us if you were in our shoes. We have no identity. It’s a divisive melting pot country and often we pride ourselves in our ethnic background in order to feel a part of something.
Not every actor is cut out for doing talk shows, and a lot of actors don't really enjoy doing publicity. There are some who feed off of it and who have fun with it, but there are others who enjoy the craft of acting but aren't really comfortable going out to promote the film, and do so because they're obligated to.
I agree with you, Elizabeth. I just think many UA-cam viewers have nothing original to say, so they just hop on the bashing bandwagon because it's all they know how to do.
I think so, too. Both people were great. I think the reason many people think it's awkward is because the conversation was more serious than most. Mr. Murphy is serious about his movie roles, and you can see that Colbert knows this. When they start talking about the movie, both people are really into the conversation. I wouldn't call it awkward at all.
speaking as someone who's not particularly a fan of Colbert I thought this was a solid interview, better than most of his. I gotta learn to stop trusting the clickbait articles that inflame indignation over some perceived cultural slight in an effort to draw in suckers like myself.
This interview started off weird because Cillian doesn’t usually like small talk that doesn’t have much meaning to it or talking about him self I noticed lol
The reason Dunkirk is not 'famous' in America is variform. But the main reason is because it doesn't involve Americans. The most insular people on Earth tend not to invest in stories in which they do not star. The reason Dunkirk is not feted is because it not a massive victory. In storytelling terms, it is a tale of a rearguard action, of rescue and retreat. Phenomenal, but no neat bows. No medals at the end. It is the first major act of camaraderie and bravery at the beginning of an internecine war.
My Grandad was there on the beach at Dunkirk being shelled for 3 days keeping communications open, before joining the last of the boats. The men that experienced it were all changed by what happened. They came home to a Country under siege with constant bombing raids in preparation for the Nazi invasion. Held back by a few brave fighter pilots and our secret radar system the Battle of Britain carried on for another year before (Pearl Harbour and) the USA finally joined the war. Grandad was back again, following D Day, and fought his way across Europe to Berlin and then one day it was just over and he went home... an ordinary bloke in a workshop.
My granddad was there as well. On the other side. I know he hated it, but back then.. You had to fight, whether you identified with the cause or not. Crazy to know that that was just 2 generations ago. I hope history never repeats itself.
Incredible! We are the last to tell these stories of such incredible sacrifice suffering and bravery. So many of these men after the atrocities went home quietly to a normal life.
Cillian Murphy is a great actor. In Dunkirk alone he packs so much per second in his scenes and it’s very charming to see how modest he is as a person. As part of this, he rarely does interviews, but if you want to see another one, search for his interview with Craig Ferguson where it’s a bit longer and Cillian opens up a bit more.
I have seen him in a number of films over many years before i recently started watching peaky blinders. And holy shit does that show change my perspective of Cillian Murphy. What a legend
I think it was awkward because Colbert kept asking stereotypical Irish questions. Go watch Cillian Murphy's interview with Craig Ferguson. Murphy actually had things to talk about and will restore the easiness feeling.
Ive watched this movie five times and I don't really watch war stuff - but the camera angles, the way the three stories come together - it was just amazing!
I think that's Cillian. He didn't really get into the conversation (at least in the beginning, it gets better once they talk about Dunkirk). Steven tried his best to get the conversation going.
Colbert just keeps asking American stereotypical questions about Irish people that have no connection to life in Ireland. How was Cillian meant to respond.? I amazed Colbert didn't do the usual "you spell your name weird!"
I just now read your recitation of Yeats Poem When You Are Old and I am embarrassed to say that this was my introduction to you. And I am so glad of that introduction. Your voice and recitation of that beautiful poem added so much to it as did the music and the photo. Thank you for doing that. It provides true moments of joy. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to do it…
I’ve been waiting for this movie for decades. Read about it as a kid in school and thought it the most incredible, heroic story of the English and it’s people. I just couldn’t understand why the event was never commemorated cinematically. From what I’ve been reading online - it’s going to be well worth the wait.
Coolest guy and actor of our time. I have been saying this since 28 Days later, Sunshine...but now, with Peaky Blinders, everyone eventually noticed that. Sexiest, coolest, most talented actor of my generation (born early eighties, even though he is a bit older). 28 Days later is still one of my favorite movies ever, I mean, that ending scene... I really hope he is going to work with Linklater, Jarmusch and Tarantino one day. I would love that.
The beautiful thing about actors like Cillian Murphy? You can tell he's artistic. He likes the money. But he'll never be the guy to turn down an art film. Being famous is something that happened to him, never something he went looking for. You do something well and you love it, and you'll never have to ask anyone to pay attention to you ❤️
Very interesting interview; not all actors are comedians, or pretend to be ones; pity that interviewer didn't pick up on the actor's previous movies more; his The wind that shakes the Barley from 2006 was pretty amazing. And his 'unsuccessful career as a musician' he mentioned, that's quite interesting.

His face, his eyes in particular, it's so striking. Wonderful actor.
😂😂😂
😆😆 totally! Complete waste of an interview- should have had better questions prepared and left the stupid nauseating, cliched comments behind.
Joys of being Irish ☘️
Omfg thank you. I hate bad interviews. This gave me second hand embarrassment like you had 10min with Cillian Murphy and you asked him about cereal ??
@@emma4955 hahahah yes!
He's a reserved actor and that is fine. Stephen is trying to make up for it by asking a lot of questions.
This.
SuperChivasLover Agreed

All i want is for someone to be able to interview an irish actor without bringing up lucky charms, leprechauns, drinking or the irish accent.
YellawayHD I feel ya. I feel the same when they bring on indian actors (I'm indian) and they blabber on about spicy food, bollywood, getting married etc.
@@champflowahbomb7630 lmao fr

hell yah.
Lol. Try being southern. They ask you if you’re married to your brother, can you play the banjo and what’s it like growing up in a racist society. To which I say “bless your little heart”
Did I mention southern of Irish ancestry?
Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy have got to be two of my favorite actors ever. They are so underrated though imo.
How is Tom Hardy underrated ? He's done amazing films and has an Oscar nomination...
murphy underrated yes, but lol everybody is obsessed with tom hardy he is far from underrated.
Sebastian Joseph
Well it's completely different situations and senarions.
MyName IsRamen True that Cillian doesn't like to dwell in the fame and the glory but wish he was more recognized for the brilliant actor that he is.

“Leprechauns.”
“Lucky charms.”

flic he's from Cork.
And now we can all listen to him talk forever and ever.
swahili
Despite being from cork he doesn't really have a cork accent, more of a neutral Irish/British non-specific accent
I've had a crush on Cillian ever since his brilliant subtle portrayal of Jonathan Crane in Batman Begins. He's still super dashing, and he's super precious with his shyness. Oh my god I can't ^^
Also watch _28 Days Later_, great film and my God he is so fiiine in it.
NO NO NO.....I had a crush on Cillian. I am the ULTIMATE FAN. lol
Man i miss seeing him in movies. lol
Heck, I went on to read so many Red Eye Fanfics just because of him.
hyacinthdibley Lol maybe we can share him?
Sunshine
By the way I just came from Dunkirk. Holy shit. This is why I still watch movies. I was so into it I didn't even realize I had bought popcorn until end credits popped up. Everybody should see it, it's a real fucking experience that's really bad for your blood pressure. Plus Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy
Cillian is a true actor that I can't get enough of. Ditto, give this man more roles and an oscar!!
He's just so charming...his voice, his personality, his love for music...and last but not the least...a great great actor!!!
I'm always amazed by shy actors who can easily play extroverted characters.
thomas shelby extroverted?🤔
@@bushrabonera not literally extroverted, man
Yeah man he is so shy but when it comes to acting he is a different guy
Introverts are usually very observant, so it’s not that shocking that he can pull off an extroverted character

Stephen: "The Trix rabbit, do you have that over there?"
Cillian: Da fuq he just said 🤔

da fook is a trix rabbit seriously, also we can get lucky charms in dublin, certain shops import them from usa but €7 a box they can go an fook off

Every Irish actor/actress can't seem to do an interview in the states without a silly discussion of accents. Every single time. I don't blame the actors either, its the interviewers I blame.
Follow Keith what need for blame? Their accents are mesmerizing.
agreed
Follow Keith absolutely couldn't agree more. No other nationalities gets as much shit
its true lol.

Colbert is like the worst interviewer ever. And he’s just not even funny.. talking about the Lucky Charms leprechaun?? Seriously??
He's such an intj xD
Irish person getting interviewed by an original American:
Accent: Check!
Lucky Charms: Check!
Leprechauns: Check!
Alcoholism: Check!
Love Colbert but there was really nowhere to go for this interview but downhill after that, he really dropped the ball with this one.
Same with the french guests, unfortunately
He's so adorable omg
Cillian is so good. Never even realized he was kind of an introvert because that's something I can say I have in common because the way he answers the questions he was asked are pretty much the way I would have.
Lool me too! xD I could feel that those conversations (his replies) could be from me the more I watched this
hes not introverted he was just done with the idiot interviewer who tried to claim he was irish while at the same time calling dublin a town. i think after the 3rd irish joke in 30 seconds he just mentally clocked out
Stephen Colbert: So how do you feel about your movie Dunkirk?
Thomas Shelby: What's your dog's name eh?
One of the most versatile actors in the world. Whatever type of character he plays, he delivers. And to add to that, he can do different accents like a champ.
Peaky Blinders is one of my all-time favorite shows. Doesn't get near enough love.
Cillian Murphy is an artist not a publicist or promoter. He doesn't do many interviews and stays aways from the spotlight.
There is nothing more cringe-worthy than when an American thinks they are Irish.
Alex Dinan "I'm all Irish". Really mate? Cos you sound pretty American to me.
I agree, I wish Americans had more pride than to try to chum up with other nationalities.
Scott Border You wish Americans had more pride? Lol
seriously
You would understand us if you were in our shoes. We have no identity. It’s a divisive melting pot country and often we pride ourselves in our ethnic background in order to feel a part of something.
An interview with Cillian Murphy happens but once every 7 years. Scholars say if you make a wish on it, it’ll come true ✨
He is so beautiful my mum calls him “killing me softly” hahahah
Lolol
Cillian’s looks _are_ *killer*
That's perfect love it.
He's very handsome
@Roughman lol
He looks very kind and goodhearted👍
Not every actor is cut out for doing talk shows, and a lot of actors don't really enjoy doing publicity. There are some who feed off of it and who have fun with it, but there are others who enjoy the craft of acting but aren't really comfortable going out to promote the film, and do so because they're obligated to.
Jedd Jong thank you!

I thought the interview was great. From some of these comments, I expected Joaquin Phoenix levels of awkwardness.
Elizabeth R - I completely agree!
I agree with you, Elizabeth. I just think many UA-cam viewers have nothing original to say, so they just hop on the bashing bandwagon because it's all they know how to do.
Yeah.. I also don't get how it was awkward. I guess people are just silly and read way too much into things
Yes he is a classic INTJ
You can spot a great actor when you can't even recognize him outside of his work
I can recognize him. He classy like in the movies.
For what it's worth, I'm American and I loved this film. I thought it was brilliant and incredibly moving.
Such an amazing actor. Peaky Blinders is one of my favorites because of his character.
There is no glory in war... humanity at it's worst.
Such a precious precious baby, I love him so much😍❤
There’s something about his haircut like his peaky blinders Tommy look that suits him so much 😍 he’s beautiful
I see Cillian, I click
One of the most underrated actors of all time...
So, six minutes of interview.
I rarely see this awesome man in interviews, and I JUST GOT ONLY SIX FOOKIN MINUTES
He seems so sweet and a gentle soul. Love him in everything I've seen so far. I'm so addicted to Peaky Blinders!
Excellent actor. He gives 100% to everything he does.
The best actors disappear into the role.
His resume is insane with awesome movies.
I like his discretion. Plus his performance in Breakfast on Pluto is amazing
“Dublin? What an amazing town!” Reminds me of “England is my city” Cillian’s reaction kills me
Cillian Murphy is a great actor. In Dunkirk alone he packs so much per second in his scenes and it’s very charming to see how modest he is as a person. As part of this, he rarely does interviews, but if you want to see another one, search for his interview with Craig Ferguson where it’s a bit longer and Cillian opens up a bit more.
yes, I recommend that one too!
I'm glad that he's finally getting the recognition he deserves! A brilliant actor
That haircut says Peaky Blinders so either he's about to film or just finished filming OR thats just his hair, who knows?
Hayley Anne they just finished filming
Jessica Almaraz - Woohoo!!!
Been waiting for what seems like 4eva to find out 'what happens next'...! 😉
I was hoping Stephen would ask him about Peaky Blinders instead of the Irish trivia.
Hayley Anne Or could just be his haircut, that haircut is really popular for lads in Ireland

This is the most outgoing I’ve ever seen Cillian in an interview. Love it!
Ive watched this movie five times and I don't really watch war stuff - but the camera angles, the way the three stories come together - it was just amazing!
As an Irish person I found stephens questions at the start really annoying.
maybe, but it made the interview awkward. Was just a poorly planned interview to be honest...
Interviews are a two way process. Colbert was fine.
yeah seriously, why would you ask an Irish person about lucky charms??
I almost got the sense that Murphy was getting annoyed too
It's an American audience. Stephen is trying to create some funny moments to make people like Cillian more. It didn't work.
this was very awkward for some reason.
Spiderous Cillian just doesn't seem interested in being there or like he even cares about the movie at all.
I think that's Cillian. He didn't really get into the conversation (at least in the beginning, it gets better once they talk about Dunkirk). Steven tried his best to get the conversation going.
Spiderous cillian is a shy guy and he rarely do interviews. He doesn't care for the media, he is just* an ordinary guy)
thing is, Colbert is an excellent interviewer, he just didn't have much to work with here.
Colbert just keeps asking American stereotypical questions about Irish people that have no connection to life in Ireland. How was Cillian meant to respond.? I amazed Colbert didn't do the usual "you spell your name weird!"
Cillian Murphy is mesmerizing to watch 😍💕
I just now read your recitation of Yeats Poem When You Are Old and I am embarrassed to say that this was my introduction to you. And I am so glad of that introduction. Your voice and recitation of that beautiful poem added so much to it as did the music and the photo. Thank you for doing that. It provides true moments of joy. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to do it…
I absolutely adore this man. So humble
I’ve been waiting for this movie for decades. Read about it as a kid in school and thought it the most incredible, heroic story of the English and it’s people. I just couldn’t understand why the event was never commemorated cinematically. From what I’ve been reading online - it’s going to be well worth the wait.
I didn't find this interview that bad at all, thought it was funny.
Meppolep7 agreed! Enjoyed it, although it was quite short
Yeah it's fine, it's light entertainment. It's just that sometimes, Americans come across as very bombastic people.
I agree with you! I thought it was funny, too. I feel bad for Colbert, and I'm not sure why so many people here are blasting him or the interview.
Cillian: *pulls out revolver* In the bleak widwinter
Cillian...simply too good in every role he plays....keep on going...bravo..❤❤❤❤❤
Most importantly “The Wind that shakes the Barley”!!!!
It feels so good seeing him laugh!!
Wow you`ve mentioned R. Linklater! Great respect for that. But Tarantino is a trash. I wish Cillian to avoid him as well as marvel movies. IMHO
He is so shy and gorgeous!
I really do love cillian ❤️ one of the best actor ever. Plus the accent 😘
