Bridge Commander and Armada were in regular rotation in the early 2000s (though I've been playing Armada again lately) and many a late night LAN party would end up visiting one of those (either solo or multi). Good video and those look like fun mods.
I think you should use the visual evidence when comparing Trek ships v Wars ships, on screen trek ships are more maneverable there weapons can be delivered from a mutch greater range, and they don't operate using technology that appears to be from the 60s
