I would like to see you do a real test on water leakage with LP smart siding.
I’d like to see you test the water leakage in between the boards and the metal flashing in between.
It would be great if you could test the joints of the siding and show us there’s no water that stays there stuck over time or in certain climate zones- snow flakes, hale...trapped inside.
If indeed the water does slide off completely regardless of climate zone then LP smart siding is a good choice.

I've got some of the trim board I've cut up for a test. I cut nine pieces. Three are primed with unpainted cut ends. Three had the cut edges sprayed with enamel paint. Three were painted on the cut edge and face with water-based PPG Breakthrough 250. One of each is in a bucket of water. One of each is laid unpainted side down on concrete, and the last set is leaning against a concrete block wall so it can go through wetting and drying cycles. Time will tell. We're in coastal South Louisiana, so if this stuff survives our climate, it'll handle anything.

Some people like to install LP over Hardi siding because its "easier" but as a business owner and someone who covers the warranty of a siding project there is nothing that lasts longer and is more durable than James Hardie lap siding. When it comes to pre-finished siding Hardi by far is an industry leader, their paint is like armor.

Cole Spolaric OSB based sidings originally came out late 1988 . I used it on many houses for 3 years until they took it off the market to redo glue and press procedures to come up with premium OSB products. My point though Is that none of those houses I built back then have any rot., swelling problems, it was a good product if kept 1 foot off grade, All siding should be installed according to best practices And the new smart side as well as hardy board siding are no different. I’ve seen fiber cement rot from bad flashing etc.. . In my opinion smart side is better because of the strength factor. Plus I don’t want lung disease from cutting fiber cement board.

In the past I’ve seen trouble with getting SW to perfectly match the prefinished hardi when we needed touchup. Of course with the LP product you have to paint the cut edge in addition to taking care of any touchup. How easy are these colors to match? Did LP use off the shelf colors from a major paint company to make that process easier?
Thanks for the video. I really like the idea of using prefinished wit the shiplap so I’m hoping you have some good answers for those matching concerns.

    • @JordanSmithBuilds

Great question, and I'm still working through the answer. Originally LP provided the touch up paint, so it matched exactly for the cutting ends and nail holes. However, for the trim work I will have to be buying a color match from another manufacturer like Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore. LPS supposedly working with those guys to have exact matches, but I haven't tried it for myself yet. I'll let you know what we find via Instagram.

    1) how due dilligent do you need to be to touch up areas with paint that get damaged or chipped ? Will it swell up immediately once wet ? Saying because no one actually pays attention to their siding that much.
Have you seen any documentation on installing this on cmu walls ?
Btw Benjamin moore has some really high perm ratings paints ! Even more than polywall . (50perms??) So probably a good paint to use to paint siding :)

    • @JordanSmithBuilds

I'm running a very non-scientific durability test out in the yard of this build. I have this siding with unpainted cut ends laying out in the rain and the weather directly on the ground. There is zero swelling of the ends or unpainted back side. It's definitely the right thing to do to paint your cut ends but you're not going to have a catastrophic failure if the siding gets chipped and isn't covered for a while.

No mention of fire rating versus the 2 and no mention of price comparison. Considering LP lap on the remainder of my garage. My house is 100% James Hardie and the stuff looks awesome hands down compared to the typical vinyl you see everywhere. I think these 2 aesthetically are comparable with the longer lengths being an advantage and impact..I suppose it comes down to price and preference. The install is obviously going to win out for LP....JH is pretty tough to deal with solo, but doable with a little care. A fair comparison would have mentioned price though and fire ratings/grills next to walls and such.

It does have to be installed correctly. Proper gaps between boards, and flashing details executed properly etc. But that's the same as any product.

It comes from LP with an incredibly low moisture content and it will expand a bit as it acclimates to your climate. The only issues with smart side come from people who improperly install it.

The Cement siding weakness is water or damp areas The LP should many need a rain screen..

    • @JordanSmithBuilds
      @JordanSmithBuilds  4 роки тому +1

I agree, I much prefer rain screens behind any cladding. LP was concerned about a batten rain screen behind their lap product because of the potential for Boeing between battens. They have just came out with a non compressible drainage mat that should take care of both the rain screen and way Venus concerns.

It seems all the big home building UA-camrs are endorsing LP. The arguments are strong and I'm close to pulling the trigger, but I keep coming back to the central issue- it's wood. Why are we using wood to side our houses? If waterproofing isn't perfect, it will fail. There are plenty of videos that show this product failing. And I'll bet 90% of the time it's due to incorrect installation. But if anyone's going to mess up installation, it's going to be me.

So you will install a product on a home that can't stand up to a water sprinkler: Directly from LP. Look at second point.
    PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
    • Check for small construction dents and gouges. Fill these indentations with a sealant that meets ASTM C920 minimum
Class 25 requirements, then prime before painting.
    • Make sure sprinklers do not spray water directly onto the trim or siding.
    • Keep roof surfaces and gutters in working order so water is diverted away from the siding.
    • Keep the painted surface free of mold, mildew and algae.
    • Make sure your trim and siding are a minimum of six inches above the ground. Do not allow garden mulch or other debris
to build up and compromise your clearance.
    • Maintain a 1/2 inch per foot slope away from the house for all adjoining surfaces including patios, driveways, grade, etc. so
that water will drain away effectively.
    • Replace missing or damaged caulking around the joints and seams where different surfaces meet with a sealant that meets
ASTM C920 minimum Class 25 requirements.
    • Repaint your trim and siding before the existing paint fails. Your local weather conditions will affect the longevity of your
    paint’s performance.

THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER PERFORMANCE OF 76 SERIES FOUNDATIONS SIDING IN ALASKA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, HAWAII, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA NORTH OF I-80 OR WEST OF THE CASCADES IN WASHINGTON, OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.
LP must know that their Smartside can fail in wet climates. Living in the midwest, we have those conditions in the fall and spring where it may rain during the day and freeze at night with it being too cold for things to dry. No thanks.

    • @annolson6980

Just Say No! To exterior drywall commonly known as fiber cement. Somebody needs to get it removed from being considered a Class 1 material so all the developers quit putting it in the requirements. Engineered wood siding should be allowed everywhere fiber cement is; how many house fires start on the outside of the house...

50 year warranty???? Are you dreaming?
Read it. Pin it on the wall and throw darts at it.
The warranty is for “fading”. I can foresee the company saying it was not installed correctly, painters were at fault, etc.
Your obvious bias doesn’t serve the general public.
Chipboard covered with paint is not something I want.
