Tommy once showed a way to measure a difference to accommodate for the upcoming window so it looks nice. Good ideas he has.
LP assumed all installers to follow the instruction 100%. Priming at the cutting edge, 3/16” gap, non-exposed nail, no water intrusion ever, never cracking caulking, which are not possible.
Once water get behind the siding by whatever reasons, it will start attacking the siding. The caulking will crack if homeowner neglect monitoring.
Not all installers can understand what he/she is doing. Even the installer in this show nailed too close to the the edge. He gave the same 3/16” gap for both 2’ siding and 16’ siding, saying it’s for acclamation.
If it fails after 20~100 years later, LP will say it’s because of installation error and will deny all claims. It’s a vinyl siding on OSB waiting failures.
You mean like at 3:13 where he doesn't even cover all the exposed wood? I agree about caulking. That is the weakest park in the system...even the best products like OSI Quad won't last 20 years in weathering and UV.
Pretty sure it's supposed to be back caulked at ends and flashed at seams
Osb materials are sooooo susceptible to water damage. Had to believe a litttle rattle can primer has enough body to really provide any protection. At most it may improve sealant adhesion
If it takes 100 years to fail, I’d say that’s a success. Put some wood siding on your house with a rainscreen and you’d be lucky to get 50 years. I think your expectations are too high.
@@BiggMo late response, but the stuff is incredible as far as water resistance -- completely unlike OSB, despite the way it looks. I cant attest to its durability over the course of 50 years, but you can literally soak off-cuts in buckets of water for months without any discernible damage or swelling to the piece.
What do pros do when there is a electrical outlet or exterior faucet that the siding need to go around?

i used those the gekos have to make sure they are tight and dont get bumped.
Why does this episode keep appearing in my notification area. I saw this a few weeks ago and this is about the 8th or 9th time it has reappeared after I delete it. I know these are all reruns but certainly they have others to replay instead of this one. Also, I am getting a lot of really old episodes, like ones with Bob Villa when he had long dark curly hair. They are all showing homes that need to be renovated, but they never show any work being done, only what they look like after the work has been done. I don't know about the rest of you, but most of the fun is actually watching Norm, Tommy and the rest of the TOH crew actually do the work.
Because it's a series. Hence the title says "part 2". 🤦
Lp says little to no caulking especiallyat butt joints. Lp says to use a brush or swab on primer not spray. Lp says to use a small flashing piece at joints. Im not an expert just going off their installing instructions available on their website. All 3 of these were done incorrectly in this video and part 1.

So no matter the length of your board, the same 3/16th for expansion is necessary? The siding always knows to just expand by only 3/16ths of an inch, no matter how long you've cut it?
Your being to literal. LP simplifies the process plus it give you a consistent caulking gap.
I wonder if that guys wife knows that he is using her tool bags.

The verbal attention they brought to proper caulking in Part 1 indicated to me there would be a caulking demonstration. That wasn't done in Part 1 or Part 2. Is it not as important and specialized as they implied? I really don't like how-to videos that are more product advertising than actual how-to. TOH should revisit their core values from 40 years ago.
Maybe, just maybe there will be a part 3? Nowhere was it stated that this was the last video about this siding.

If a “pro” has can’t eyball a 3/16” gap and has to snap a line to know where to nail, well....he’s no pro. This convoluted process would more that double the labor cost for a job like this. Wait.... maybe he’s Union!

A pro should be able to feel the 3/16” gap. Not hard to do if you’re a pro.
OSB siding isn't smart siding...
A lot better than JH, won’t shrink, break when transporting and has a better warranty
1 product is junk.
2 that small amount of primer is not enough the particle board will absorb. It It’s effectively doing nothing. But again it’s particle board why put it out in the elements. O BROTHER
