Been watching for a while Mike like your videos . had a cobra 138 in 1977 23 ch when they first hit the shores of this land down under. I'll tell my friend about your work he has stacks of restored cb rigs and learnt his trade in electronics self taught in a darkened room . many thanks ..
I had one of those radios back in the mid 1990s. It had extra channels using the NB and ANL front switches, RF Unlimited TRB-1 Turbo echo board, OPEK export roger beep board using the counter front switch, variable wattage control, and unlocked clarifier. The only thing I didn't like was that the echo control knob and wattage knob were mounted to the chassis on the mic side of the radio and stuck out through the cases. Other than that it was a great radio.
I just purchased a 148F GTL, brand new in the box, never opened, with all the warranty papers, owners manual, everything. Still in plastic, Malaysia model,1969 finals, z board, the works.. where can I purchase the expansion board you used?
great video Mike. i'm wondering if we can start putting the ranger style VCO's into the old school 8719 radios? i would think that the big difference would be the varactor diode, and that the rest would be compatible. also, if you start broadbanding the receive and transmit mixer sections, (you might already know this) don't increase the value of C41, as it actually narrows the range of the coil. instead strap a 1pF cap across L5 from the collector of TR14 to the junction of L5 and C41. C163 can be increased to about 5pF for the TX section, but ive always found that broadening the range of the TXmixer chip gave the best results. (again, you probably already know all this, but wanted to put it out there)
loosecannonradios There are some other circuit differences between the two boards. I really need to play with a normal 148 or 2000 and do some parts swapping to see exactly what is needed to convert one so it's basically like this radio.
MikesRadioRepair great Mike I have to agree with Dino been in withdrawal from no videos. Thanks for all the effort you put into these videos. Just hope they never get dropped from UA-cam .
Mike, thanks for the great videos. I just bought this same model cobra 148f gtl model. I am pretty sure it is unchanged. I would love for you to add this channel package and peak tune it. Can you leave a contact route please thx! Dave

DAVID GREGORY KERR RCI Ranger just uses a little smd board to replace it in a lot of their more recent chassis. Manufacturers have been doing that since the 90's. The Cherokee radios had smd boards in place of the so42p.
Radionut R They are not available for outright sale. They have to be installed by a radio tech. So a couple other radio shops that install them and myself.
These boards are very broad banded due to who made them. However they are pretty well designed. Much better than their "black box" cousins. I would love to see a spectrum sweep of one of these. May make a decent 10 meter rig for AM

Donald D'Egidio
Have over 50 videos to post when I get time. Never enough time.
Would like to get hold of one of these for my Cobra 138 , is there any way to buy one ?
How much to do the same mods to my 148f ? Along with full alignment and tune?
It's a shame that the SO42P so not made any more as it was a very good mixer chip.

MikesRadioRepair would they use something like the Tayloe mixer which means that unwanted mixer products don't show up in the output
mike where can you get one of these boards
Where do I get this conversion kit
Radionut R

where are you located
Cobra did not make this radio that long. I only knew one guy called neckromancer in norfolk virginia that had one in the mid 1990s. That's it.
how much is one of these chennal mods

I found this cb on goodwill and its been hacked on alooot it can go + and - channels. I hate it
Mike can fix it no problem.
Why would anyone do this, you start playing in the amateur bands you’re asking for trouble.
Same layout as a Galaxy DX88HL
NICE!
