    I have an old Philly 148 GTL. I have had it in all my convertible Jeeps. Since I do get caught without my soft top in the rain from time to time, I would have to say the Philly 148GTL is extremely durable. I easily make contacts over several states on sideband. It is looking a bit worn over the decades, but it still runs like new!

    Probably the most Iconic 11m band SSB Transceiver.. From the early 80s.. My personal favourite is the Teaberry Stalker 9 FDX... Ticked all the boxes, particularly in the UK with the UK 27/81 FM included.. On SSB outstanding RX TX...

    Thank you so much for this and ALL your video's. This one was particularly helpful as you went to the trouble to show us exactly what to turn. I don't have the gear to measure and do it all but it's nice to know what and where they are. Thank you again!!

    i LICK my 148 daily.
    it is such a great great radio. i miss the radio so much, and sometimes i wonder if the CB craze will ever come back again.
    started 93, and i was such a fan up to 2001, or so,
    i spent most of my day behind the MIKE.
    lots of groups all around the channels, so many kids, it was fun fun fun.
    i loved it. lots of dx ' ing. locals, etc, you name it, mobile operation.
    oh well.
    :)
    thanks for the nice video.

    good job. I have the same radio I have sent to a guy I know in my town how to fix radios and he had it over 12 months to turn it up I was on his back about it's to fix it. I told him I'm going to pick it up today he told my wife on the home base radio if he comes over he's will use his baseball bat on me LOL air came out with a baseball bat and I did see a pole next to his door and I picked it up and he slammed the door in my face and I bashed his door with the pole the police officer told me to go home he pack the box away and gave it to a some person I know. he thinks he knows how to fix CB radios I think you fuck my radio up it just needs a tune-up now it doesn't have any modulation my needle moves a little tiny bit I can't hear myself on my other CB radio. in Australia not many CB shops fix these 27mhz no more only UHF CB radios a guy in Queensland he does fix the radios in his own home but he's got all the machines that's good. looks like I got to send the radio to his home to fix it. 😎

    It was working... but now my channel display is blanked (not visible). Does it do this when the PA switch is on? I thought that might be a clue to what's wrong, if it is?
    I was trying to fix a detached black wire inside of my microphone, and when I turned it back on, the display was off. Is it possible I shorted something out?

    I own a 148 gtl. While keying the mic in usb or lsb the needle doesn’t rotate to the right in the meter while transmitting. The needle is supposed to rotate to the right the same as keying the mic in am right? If anything the needle in the meter pegs itself all the way to the left.

    O.K. wow ! The Cobra 148 GTL according to my impression is that it is a great AM / SSB mobile CB radio. That being said, I went out sort of looking for one. Most recently, over in Canada just a stones throw from Buffalo New York and the American (U.S.) border I am pretty sure i saw a Cobra 148 GTL in a showcase or shelf behind a glass sliding door at a place called the Pilot Flying J - looks like a truck stop, to me - so, I wanted to snap it up - impulsive buy it - and I walked up to ht eocunter and it is said to me that the person who is in charge of the radios is not prresent. i should up a few days later and the radio is not there. WHAT A LET DOWN. I am on a mission to get my hands on a Cobra 148 GTL CB radio. Please help.😀👍

It had power cord, 5 to 4 pin adapter with Astatic 636 L low impencedence stock mic , 4 bracket knobs and Am need repair by resistor also Choke and antenna jack plus got orgnial bracket from CB / Radio store sells them and Double Tune Up! Use the radio in my vechile with homemade mic from parts it a Citizen Case , key switch 1970 type & Turner 1960 mic element and 10 foot cord with 4 pin Cobra plug sounds like Power Mic but have Mic Gain at 1:00 spot for Am or SSB modes use Wilson 1000 with 68 inch whip ! I still have my old 148 GTL from 1979 with original box. The older ones are great and work awesome on SSB. The new Chinese made 148 GTLs are completely useless on SSB and Cobra has NO PLANS to improve the audio problems with the new ones on SSB. Cobras stance on thier radios these days is "take it or leave it"...........................

    r131 makes a huge difference in modulation, I've owned a couple 148s and when you clip r131 your audio will go to like 120% and its super loud, and from far away you'll be heard, 148 is a good radio and its basically a cobra 2000, which is a super bodacious radio, 148s are loud and sound good with the limiter cut and a d104.

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 років тому +1

      +alizarin alexander
      I disagree. They sound like crap with the limiter cut. If you look at the audio wave, it becomes narrow, and rectangular shaped. Modulation gets to be around 200% or even more. You also get all sorts of weird harmonic radiations all over the spectrum when you do that. The channel width get super wide and it bleeds up or down 3 to 5 channels.
      Clipping parts out of these is the worst thing you could ever do.
      Also, if you clip the limiter out, is not a single bit louder, than just cranking VR-11 all the way up. The final simply cannot reproduce that much extra audio power, so it stalls out when the audio limits reaches the physical limits of the finals. (Think stalling an airplane when it tries to climb straight up)
      So not only do you get a super distorted wave form on the scope, but a good chunk of the audio is simply never added to the carrier at all.
      Just crank up VR-10 and VR-11 the way the factory intended it to, and you will have the loudest, cleanest radio ever made. Even today, the ONLY radios that can compete with it are build on the modern version of the same original main board. The Galaxy today, for example, uses the same identical audio chip as the original 148 did. It's never been upgraded.....nothing beats it, so it stayed the same all these decades.

    • @westoftherockies
      @westoftherockies 8 років тому

      VanishingNomad all my radios get the limiters cut, its easy to dial back the modulation and its plenty clear, it only gets the distorted sound when its turned up very high and sometimes it sounds really good like that, but to each is own.

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 років тому +1

      Sorry to hear that.

    • @westoftherockies
      @westoftherockies 8 років тому

      VanishingNomad the problem is that most stock radios the modulation is very low, sometimes as low as 50 or 60% and thats a mud duck dude, doesn't matter if you have a power mic, i've hooked up base D104's to stock radios and the modulation is still 60 or 70%, a power mic doesn't affect the modulation % at all really, it might make you sound loud at short ranges but at long ranges it does nothing, i've tested many times many years ago, all my friends had bases and mobile cb's i would have people get on my base station while i was is my car the next town over and do countless tests using different radios mics etc, i have meters that measure modulation and power etc, so i know what a mud duck is, i would run a galaxy 2100 or cobra 148 in my car using d104 mics, steel whips, and messenger amps, usually 500 watts min, i could go park on a hill in the los angeles area and people 30 to 40 miles away thought i was in their neighborhood, i've used all sorts of antennas, i had a beam on my roof, my friends had different setups, i guarantee you, if you and me had the EXACT same radio and antenna and you left the audio 60% and i cranked mine up to 120%, i would step all over you and even if you had a 300 watt amp my audio would cut thru your carrier, thats a fact, i know for a fact lol i've done it, you're talking to someone who had a CB when i was 10 years old, putting my own antennas up on the house i saved up from delivering the paper and doing odd jobs, i had cbs all my life, even now i have a base, now if you can raise the audio to 100% or very close to it without cutting the limiter great, but thats not always easy to accomplish if at all, so if i'm gonna have a choice of a radio with 60 % audio or 100 plus % audio, its a no brainer.

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 років тому +1

      +alizarin alexander ,
      I don't leave the audio at 60%. If you crank VR-11 all the way up, you can get about 110% modulation with the dynamike set at 10 (8 is a perfect 100% with a power mic). You have a MUCH cleaner, clearer system if you leave the limiter in, and just open the adjustment up.
      NOW, that said, a CB with the PC-412 mainboard (Like the old 148GTL/2000 & Uniden Grant, Galaxy and the like, or the Export version of the same board), you can do that with. They were built for it from the factory. On the other hand, if you have a different radio, you have to start playing games with the limiter design, or flat out clip it from the system, similar to what you describe. It depends on the radio you are dealing with.
      Clip the limiter out of an old school Cobra 148 (and others built on the same mainboard), and you will ruin it. 200%-300%+ modulation will wreak havoc with your performance. You will have a loud, distorted, over modulated radio that not only sounds like total crap, but also bleeds all over the place. Trust me, I have built enough of these to know how to do them right (since the 1980s).
      I don't know what has to be done on the newer 148GTLs though. Those came after my time, and were significantly inferior to the old ones, so I never actually bothered with them. You may have to clip the limiter on those, I don't know.

    @cordelmar 10 років тому

    How do you increase the watts?

    • @VanishingNomad
      @VanishingNomad 8 років тому

      +cordelmar ,
      On a real one, crank up VR-10 all the way. You will get double the power, but the audio volume drops off. To prevent this, you have to crank VR-11 all the way up too. You then get double the power, and double the audio out of it
      From the factory, they can dead key 8 or 9 watts, and swing to about 16 or 18, sometimes 20 even, on AM, and hit 24 on SSB. They will stay clean, not bleed or cause TVI either.
      You don't even have to modify them at all, just turn up the adjustments.

    You have the dead key too high for one thing, and also if you're using an RMS meter it might show 'backward'. It's likely moving forward SOME, but not much.
    Remember, a 100% fully modulated AM carrier has a peak of 12 watts with a DK (carrier) of 4 watts. You're not going to get much more out of that rig without doing an NPC mod, even still turn the DK down to 2-4 watts - other operators will thank you for it - you will be much louder and have at least as much range as with the 8w DK.
