I remember watching this with my now late mum. She loved it, we both did, it HAD to be this version though!! I thank my mum for being the best she could be for me. Miss her so much. Thank you very much for everything mum. RIP (20/12/99)
One of my favorite off-Broadway musicals of all time, and the absolute best song out of the entire musical ! The message is simple, being thankful makes everything worthwhile !
I finally found my Favorite " A christmas Carol Version " ,I remember watching this as a young lad and It is by far the best Verison ever made. Its great that Albert Finney is still appearing in movies , Just google search his name,
When my mothers mother (my grandmother) dies, Everyone will be singing and dancing to this song though the streets. I will be singing lead ofcourse, dancing with my mother on the coffin like Tom. Come to think of it, my nanna looks kinda like scrooge in this movie, so it would work out REALLY well.
I remember watching this as a kid in the late '70's and dancing along with the actors. Now I'm getting my own kids to dance along LOL! This is such a great movie!!
Wrong, The real wealth in England during that time was firmly held by the royalty and the church. Scrooge was just a business owner with 1 employee. He's what was left of the middle class after that depressionary period started. Yes, compared to the working poor, he was rich, but compared to the real wealth, people like scrooge were nothing. I don't think Scrooge loved money. He just feared the horrors of being poor. I can understand where he's coming from.
It's funny how we think of Scrooge as this wealthy guy, but he wasn't. He just ran this little two man business, with only one employee. This book was placed in a time in Britten that's much like what we're headed into right now. A massive decades long depression. In the book "a Christmas Carol" Charles Dickens never even addressed the real wealth in that society, the dukes and the lords and whatnot. He just concentrated on the conflict between the middle class and the working poor.
Because look what happened to the last big one: Newsies was a complete flop. It's all about the money, unfortunately. Now everything has to be glitzy and sleazy like Chicago (whose musical numbers ARE pretty good) or plastic and disnified (High School Musical). It's a dying breed, the catchy musical movies.
I could have sworn I heard this in a Walmart commercial near the holidays when I was little, like everyone was giving each other Walmart giftcards for Christmas and they were all singing this song. But I can't find that video xD
Nope. Leslie Bricusse wrote the songs for SCROOGE. He wrote the lyrics for "Stop The World I Want To Get Off," "The Roar of the Greasepaint The Smell of the Crowd," and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
Do you, know how long me and my family have been searching for this?!?!?!? been going on to 17 years now, OMFG, my mom is crying, she loooves this part, thank you so very much for uploading this great movie
60,000 are preying this Christmas to BURY the repetitive George W. Bush Jr., Richard Riordan, Robin Lindon, John Barrymore Jr, and Chris Ciccone Crime Syndicate this Christmas, which my generation, and I have become victims of. May are prayers be answered. +JVA+
Time to upgrade from VHS, now you can get it on DVD or Blue Ray...www.amazon.com/Scrooge-Albert-Finney/dp/B0000AQS5D/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1386088435&sr=8-1&keywords=scrooge+staring+albert+finney
When I was four years old, I used to dance and sing this song word for word, move for move, and I used to use the garbage disposal as my Tom Jenkins hat... I was one weird four year old but hey, good memories eh?
It's true :) And I can't figure out why...maybe the slightly macabre overtones to this song? The guy doesn't look creepy at all...but the song is a bit creepy, especially Scrooge singing along with them.
Overall, I was not exceptionally fond of this interpretation of the story, but the scenes with this song were absolutely classic. Worth listening to again and again.
Its just so undescribable how Scrooge thinks they are cheering for him when he's in the coffin. Its awesome how they made it all fit together. Such a freakin great film.
I love this version. Everyting about it is just so well done plus the songs! Last time I watched I was 9! XD Then go this song stuck in my head this morning.
I saw this on TCM last week. Robert Osborn said that Albert Finney turned down the movie right away...at first.. Then RICHARD HARRIS was going to do it...for what ever reason Richard Harris could not do it. Then REX HARRISON signed up. Then something happened and he could not do it. In the meantime ALBERT FINNEY finally read the script and signed up. So all ended up well!!!! Anyway I thougt it was interesting....
watch this film close to christmas..the 23rd 22nd..on the sofa..start to finish..mince pies on the table..christmas tree with the lights on in the corner..that is absolute heaven..amazing story by charles dickens, amazing characters, great music..genuine moral lessons within dickens characters.albert finney..one of the greatest british actors of all time..love it..watch it!!!!!!!!!!!
This was done by the same folks who made Oliver. Unfortunately, many people compared it to that and found this lacking. I'm 99% sure this was a flop. A shame, too, since it works except for the scene when he goes to hell. Marley already showed him his punishment: to haunt the world forever unable to help anyone.
I was at the league game for my school's football team and we won, and i got everyone in the bleachers to sing this. We even got the oldest teacher at the school to scream, "You woke my baby up!" I got to sing the lead part. The looks on the other team's faces? Priceless!
everyone in my street re-inacts this scene every year at xmas,i play the anton rogers role and ive been told that i do it better than him, when my neghbours bring out the coffin i do a backflip and never miss a single note.dickens knew how to write a bloody good tune.
We're putting this show on at school, and it is the highest energy number in the show! At rehearsals, we can't hear our pianist over our own voices! On a pseudo-related note, did anyone else see Tom Jenkins accidently knock someone off the coffin at 1:56-ish?
@mrboombasticx mrboombasticx is correct. According to google, Albert Finney was born in 1936, so he was 34 at the time of the release of this wonderful holiday classic. I watch it every year while I decorate the tree. it is not Christmas without it.
Poor Scrooge, he has no idea that they are...*sniffs*On the plus side, this is a catchy song and one of my favorites in the film. Still kinda angry the song lost out on the Oscar. Great film, great song, but still...Poor scrooge!
Probably the most beautiful example of dramatic irony I've ever witnessed... irony implicit in Dickens, but really brought out in this film adaptation. Scrooge's cluelessness is just beautiful, perfect, astoundingly brilliant. So, you know, bravo and all.
@huronstone1 don't you just love it when something catchy goes in your head and you just can't get it out and you just can't help but sing along !??!?!??!?!?!? this is one of those songs :D
@XTheRosesThornX you simply must see the version with Alistair Sims.....THAT is one Dickens would have loved ! This one, the Sims one, and Mr Magoo's were me and my moms all time faves at Christmas.
Actually I think it makes that impact even more - especially since Scrooge is naive enough to think people actually liked him, and then he gets smacked with the realization all at once that he is dead.
@timothyj1966, perhaps you should re-read my comment. I said OSAMA BIN LADEN. Nowhere in my comment do I even mention OBAMA! Besides I do like him and I voted for him. And I hate Bush.
My mom and I watched this about 3 times a year at Christmas. She's been gone for two (now three) Christmases and I miss her so very much. Mom, this ones for you.....love you so much !
i like to say thank you very much to all the mangers at enve sales and the french company that owns us for make us redundant because thats the nices think they have ever done for us
You mean Maggie Thatcher who was voted into power three times by the British people and served 12 years as the British prime minister. She couldn't of been that hated.
I'll sing it to myself at6 work, too. Fortunately, it's not very loud, and it's not an easily recognizable tune, so people won't think I'm weird if they do hear me.
I love how Scrooge is completely oblivious that they are all happy that he's dead. XDXDXD He hasn't a clue. And I love how they tap dance on his coffin. XDXDXD It's class. :D
best Christmas movie ever and the best version. Albert Finney is perfection in this. We own it and watch it every Christmas and sometimes in the summer too lol
Thanks for bringing back some good memories with this download. The Ghost of Christmas Future scared the crap out of me when I was young..good times :-)
I remember watching this with my now late mum. She loved it, we both did, it HAD to be this version though!! I thank my mum for being the best she could be for me. Miss her so much. Thank you very much for everything mum. RIP (20/12/99)
They would've sang this at Hitler's funeral if the movie came out the same year.
Best version of Scrooge of all time.
One of my favorite off-Broadway musicals of all time, and the absolute best song out of the entire musical ! The message is simple, being thankful makes everything worthwhile !
laura faye
I love the irony that Scrooge has no idea what they're really happy about!
In Iran they’re singing the same for Riesi
I finally found my Favorite " A christmas Carol Version " ,I remember watching this as a young lad and It is by far the best Verison ever made. Its great that Albert Finney is still appearing in movies , Just google search his name,
This is my favourite Christmas film of all time.
It defines an era & has great lyrics!.
I LOVE this musical. Even without music it's the BEST version of The Christmas Carol ever done!
💘 Love this 🎄 Christmas 🎥 Movie Every 🎄 Christmas Movie Every Christmas time I watched the movie
I laughed my ass off when I first saw this. (Dancing on the Coffin)
I remember watching this as a kid in the late '70's and dancing along with the actors. Now I'm getting my own kids to dance along LOL! This is such a great movie!!
The Greatest Chrismas Carol Adaption of all time. I remember this as a kid and have never seen a better version since XX
This is the only version of a Christmas Carol I like. I grew up with it, and the songs are the best.
IMO, this is the best version of "A Christmas Carol" ever.
One of the best songs in Musical History....Thank You Very Much..!
My daughter Jade would love to sing this at my funnel
When Fred Phelps kicks the bucket, I guarantee someone will be singing this.
anton rogers and albert finney are truely brilliant. RIP anton who died this month xx
Rest in Pueces Riesi
The Tranian people are singing this for you

@gr8in83 Scrooge is played here by Albert Finney, who I believe was only in his mid 30's at the time. Probably about 32-34ish.
Overall, I was not exceptionally fond of this interpretation of the story, but the scenes with this song were absolutely classic. Worth listening to again and again.

I love the lead Actor in this scene.......Not the Scrooge one......The guy in the Top Hat!.......He's sooooo Cool.
I love this version. Everyting about it is just so well done plus the songs!
Last time I watched I was 9! XD Then go this song stuck in my head this morning.
This is my all time favorite version as well! Glad to see I'm not alone! I have to go and get this on DVD now!

Anton Rogers just recently died. In this he plays Tom Jenkins, the Hot Soup Man, who leads the song.
Actually, he was wealthy, and it was his pursuit of money (and love) of money that led to him losing his fiance.
I saw this on TCM last week. Robert Osborn said that Albert Finney turned down the movie right away...at first.. And not only that, but he was only 34 years old at the time! Whoa!
Don't hold your breath. I've had Ding, Dong, The Witch Is Dead on my hard drive for two years in anticipation of her death and it hasn't happened yet.
Thanks for bringing back some good memories with this download. The Ghost of Christmas Future scared the crap out of me when I was young..good times :-)
my grandfather and i used to watch this every christams when he was alive this movie awalys reminds me og him thank you so much for posting this:)
I just watched this on TCM, what a great movie! My favorite scrooge definately..
HUZZAH! Thank you very much!!
I played this song on my trumpet.
Then in the play. I was singing lead.
XD
I regretfully have to say that George C. Scott plays a better Scrooge than Albert Finney or Seymor Hicks...and yes even Allistar Sim.
By the way I loved the movie too, and I watch it every year.
Only if Osama Bin Laden could have died of his own accord, then the entire USA could have broken out joyfully into this song!
This movie has become one of my Christmas traditions and I watch it every year! This song is my favorite in the whole movie! (=
We all have a bit of scrooge in us we just have to over come it and be thankful and thank you very much for being alive.
i think its sad how scrooge dosnt know they are singing because he dies ): but i love this song so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Brilliant, not letting Scrooge see why they were so happy being his death. Christmas isn't right until I see this gem.
Osama bin Laden is dead ^_^ ...I totally FB this..... What I would have givin to be in NY When this was announced...
@joruggs1966
Best Scrooge ever??? I give that title to Al Sim. Finney seem to lack what Sim had in the role imo.
It's a good song, but I just don't like this scene. It just ruins the poignancy of Scrooge dying alone and unmourned
I've been singing this for 30 years....Thank you very much for posting....it's the nicest thing that....well you know!
HAHA, I never noticed the the singer bumping the other guy off the wagon at 1:56, I wonder if that was on purpose!
Absolutely favorite version of Christmas Carol. EVER.
My favorite version!!!
this is the type of song u wanna sing at an old rivil's furnnel XD
I most certain have an entire list of people I shall sing this song about at the appropriate occasion.
I am strangely attracted to the guy singing this song...weird.
I am tom jenkins in the "Scrooge" Play i am in! I LOVE THIS!!!
@huronstone1
That is so awesome! Thank you very much for rubbing this in the other teams face! :)
One can only hope that the crowd would start singing this at the state funeral of Margaret Thatcher.
@mrboombasticx Yes, Finney was 34 at time of production. :)
Cudos to the 200 + people marching/dancing in perfect unison ! Perfection ! Thanks for posting !
It's not Christmas until we see this and then we walk around singing Thank You Very Much all say!!
You can see what he's like in the beginnings and how he changed after before his life is officially over
My friends and I will be singing this when Andrew Clark dies
LoL, I guess he is oddly attractive. How he sings the song kicks the most ass though. Love it!
This is by far the best Scrooge ever Thank you very much lol for uploading ahhh the memories
Anton rodgers sang this song...awesome job!
I drive my kids nuts every year singing this
Songwriter Leslie Bricusse R.I.P.
That guy in the top hat reminds me of Prime Minister David Cameron for some reason. Weird.
i can't get this song out of my head -___-
on behalf of all the people who have assembled here!!
*How I felt when I heard Disney put an end to 3D re-release of the Star Wars films*
