This is the best part of the movie. The music, the acting, the "Britishnes" and the spirit of Christmas all come together beautifully. Finney's "Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!" always brings me to brink of tears. It has since 1970. The final crescendo at the end, when Scrooge puts his beard on the door sends me over the top. The English are so classy. Thank you very much!
I'm fighting not to cry while listening to this. I was in a play version of this in elementary school, so not only am I getting a beautiful song, I'm also getting a reminder of my childhood.
The finale of the chorus and Finney's squeaky "Merry Christmas" at the end always make me choke up every year. Easily the most underrated Scrooge film ever done.
Its Amazing how many lifes this movie has been a part of.....I first watched this sitting on my grandfathers lap,,,,,,And its been a tradition for everyone in my family ever since...sisters, neices, nephews, cousins everyone loves it. Gets you in the Christmas Spirit!........Albert Finney is Amazing as Scrooge!!!
I saw that on TCM, too! I first saw this in the theater back in 1970---LOVED IT---and my boyfriend then bought me the original soundtrack...I think this was probably the last, great, traditional Musical ever made! Merry Christmas, Everybody!
what a great version and so true to life. How many people feel like Bob Cratchet at Christmas. Not enough time off not enough money in your pocket. Merry Christmas to all 2019
I also agree that this is my favorite version of Scrooge as it ALWAYS makes me smile and puts the season into perspective ever since I was a kid. Albert Finney FTW! Thank you very much (for the posts)!
TCM recently showed this for the first time and showed it again last night. I was thoroughly delighted with it, especially this scene. I could watch it over and over -in fact, I think I will....
This is a great movie. Albert Finney is the best Scrooge and Kenneth More as The Ghost of Christmas Present is great as well. This is the best movie adaptaton of A Christmas Carol.
THANKS FOR THIS FUN POST! I've never seen this film - this clip alone has motivated to rent it. I was looking for a cheerful way to say thank you to my new editor and every other song i found on the web was too romantic, churchy or funky. Although a bit corny and dated - this strikes the right chord to send to a professional associate. ABUNDANT BLESSINGS! -CDivine
@SaruCameraNinja Love the movie and this song....also luv SING A CHRISTMAS CAROL at the very beginning/intro for the movie... I was watching this movie the Friday -- December 5, 1980 -- just 3 days before John Lennon was murdered....How quickly and tragically everything can change all from the actions of a single person.....but I still love the movie and plan to see it again on Christmas Eve with my sister....
Gracias
This is exactly what GOD did for us in His Son.....He cancelled all the debts and charges against us and nailed them to the cross...but EVERY person has to RECEIVE this for themselves by faith by asking Jesus to save them. ...and you will have a whole new life and a whole new future will begin for you....and it will last for all eternity!!!
He was only 34 at the time he played Ebenezer, if I remember correctly. The man who played his nephew was older than he was. But I think this is a great song.
As with any good story, the true meaning does not lay in the overt surfaced plot, but in the hidden subtleties that the audience is able to pick up and therefore extract the story's true meaning.
Hey, does anyone remember this commercial that was on tv a couple years ago that featured this scene? It was like a credit card commercial or something and it showed this scene from Scrooge where everyone is singing Thank You Very Much. I just remembered it today. Anyone else remember it?
@karriu277 Omg I know what you mean! Thats why I always watch this on Christmas eve, because even if I feel like crap, after watching this I will be going up the stairs to bed singing "Thank you very much!"
You say that as though that's a bad thing. It's a good song, and can be sung at just about any time of year. After all, being thankful is a good thing.
leslie bricusse should get much more highly reputation as a composer. he continues to give us good music through 60`s to 20`s . If we have a Nobel prize of music section. sato haruhiko japan

+Charles Thomas Except for the George C. Scott version.
This movie and song has grown on me over the years. I used to hate it, but now it is one of my favorites. Much better the latest musical with Frazier.

I agree. It's a great movie!
I love this movie
He was only 34 at the time he played Ebenezer, if I remember correctly. The man who played his nephew was older than he was. But I think this is a great song.
So Good!
I love this Musical number..........You won't this kind of scene nowadays.....Oliver Twist was the same way...........
As with any good story, the true meaning does not lay in the overt surfaced plot, but in the hidden subtleties that the audience is able to pick up and therefore extract the story's true meaning.
Love this movie
Yes, if I had a cannon, I'd fire it, too!
But since I left my cannon at home, I'll simply have to say...
you know!
As for it not showing often on TV...It is available on DVD :)
Mr Scrooge,
HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009!
I love this movie!!!! lol

By the way, the songs and the screenplay were written by Leslie Bricusse.
@karriu277
Omg I know what you mean! Thats why I always watch this on Christmas eve, because even if I feel like crap, after watching this I will be going up the stairs to bed singing "Thank you very much!"
Almost forgot...thank you.

I don't know what my problem is but I'm strangely attracted to Tom Jenkins when he's making that funny face during "That's the nicest..."
leslie bricusse should get much more highly reputation as a composer. he continues to give us good music through 60`s to 20`s . If we have a Nobel prize of music section.

Okay, so I am not imagining that, right? I seem to remember it but no one else does. I don't even know if there is a video of it.
Incredible fun.
charles dickens knew how to write a ruddy good tune

Merry Christmas To everyone around the world
@BWKAPPA
This movie has been a Christmas Eve must see every year!
@kellyberry That's in the other part of the film where Scrooge is with the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come and his debtors are dancing on his coffin.
@ladydemando No, this movie was made in 1970 (0r 1971) Robin Williams was MUCH younger then
@jzchillin oddly enough, Finney was younger then the acter who played his nephew!
