- Try cleaning the manget in the toaster to fix it. If this does not work: you probably have to buy a new one :-(
unfortunately many of you did not make it to repair the toaster, but it worth trying it: GOOD LUCK!

Brilliant. Your video saved our £150+ toaster to brown another day. Thank you.
We need people like you on UA-cam. I can finally use my toaster again without holding down the handle with an elastic.
With minimal skills to start with I followed your video and my SMEG toaster is now fixed. Thank you.
Thank you so very much Thomas!!! This helped me to fix my toaster. My lever knob didnt come off (its a 4 slice toaster)and i couldnt get the yellow wire off but I still managed to unplug the internal panel plug, clean the magnets and remove extra crumbs and it now works!!!! You have saved me a hassle and money and for that I thank you. It is also very satisfying fixing something yourself.
Thanks for the video.
My Smeg toaster had two sets of copper contacts (made from a sheet of copper). A white of plastic will force a connection. Clean the contact surface and bend them slightly towards each other.
I hope this will help someone.
The toaster not staying down can also be caused by the center heating element being defective. The electromagnet that holds down the handle is in series with center heating element so when the center element breaks, the handle doesn't stay down as well.
Thanks for this!
If only it were this easy, the silver in the bottom was about to snap as I tried to orize it off.
Yes its not that easy I levered it off on the outside and there was a click upwards just after each screw hole - much easier.
Mate. You are a genius! Thanks for the vid .Re the comment below .This fix can actually be done without removing the silver knob on the lever as mine didn’t screw off.
SMEG....your toaster looks the biz but has a woefully inadequate crumb tray for a family toaster and the holes on the bottom could be way bigger to let all the larger stuff out. Get onto it!
I can get the tabs on the bottom to release. Any tips? You make it look easy in the video.
@@teamcoronasalgado1221 I used a small screwdriver to pry the tabs gently and it helped
Very good, thank you, I fixed my toaster in 30 minutes.Gave it a good clean out too.
Thank you. I got the first 6 screws out and then was totally stumped.
Couldn't figure it out, but it was easy once you showed me how.
I'm surpised how cheaply made these are inside. And that's with expecting them to be very cheap and nasty.
PS, my issue was a bent part that I couldn't get at until I had it apart. The bread lifter had buckled. It's made of very soft metal and the weight of bread had been too much for it.
Thanks so much for posting this! I've only had my SMEG for three years and all of a sudden the handle doesn't stay down. I am so disappointed since this thing wasn't cheap and I was expecting better quality. I'll try your fix and hopefully it will work. I've also noticed that the elements are not glowing on one side of the toaster. Have to flip the toast to get it toasted on both sides. So disappointing...don't think I'll be buying another SMEG product. Beautiful but cheaply made. Glad I didn't get the $600+ Dolce and Gabanna model!
Hi! I am experiencing the same issue. Do you have an update on your toaster?
Thanks for the vid, was helpful when i had to disassemble my toaster today.
Jobs a gun un. Wife pleased. Thanks. 👍
Very helpful, thanks. Although my model has a different earth connection!
Did you repair it?
Though your video is nice, the attempt to repair the toaster did not work. I ordered a new one. After ten years that’s fine with me. My boy went away with it to a so called „repair café“. I‘m curious if they can fix the magnet somehow.
Hello Tomas it's great to see the video. thanks for sharing it. I disassemble the same model. But I have a different issue. When I push the lever down I got the electricity. But it does't hold. I clean the magnet when the lever touch. But it didn't help. Do you have an idea which one is the faulty part?
pialbengaltiger sorry no idea! I think its a bigger problem then :-(
Question. Does your toaster's center element get hot or just the outer elements?
Thanks for this Thomas! My daughter's SMEG is only 3 months old and the lever already stopped working. Hopefully she'll let me try this to see if it's the magnet. Question to others out there that this didn't work for... Has anyone tried sending it back to SMEG to repair? Thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!!
Talk about lousy service! I had the same issue with my Smeg toaster. The electromagnet circuit was bad. I was just told by the Smeg service team that they do not make replacement parts for the toaster, and that it was now trash! Unreal! By the way, I cleaned the magnet as this video shows. That did not do the trick.
I cleaned it too today. Not working either
When removing the trim your fingers block the camera view so we don’t know what you are doing to release the trim
It worked. Thanks
I can’t get the 4 hidden screws they are so tight I’m ready to crack it to get the tool in. Thoughts?
Thank you. But mate!! Get to the point.
I don't need to know how to take it apart... I need to know how to fix it.
Excellent! Thanks for the video helped a lot. Any chance you could give me a hand with the smeg blender? Been trying to fix it but haven't achieved it..
unfortunately not. Sorry I´m not a professional.. Just learning by doing approach :-)
Thank you! Just fixed mine!
Hi, There is a problem with the Smeg toaster, the lever slides down but doesn't stay or get engaged. After removing the case, I followed all the steps from brushing to cleaning all around the toaster body and the lever contacts then it worked while it is out of its case, the stop and temperature knob and the buttons illuminate and function while the toaster body is out of the case, but again the lever slides down but doesn't stay or get engaged when I put the case back on, I tried three times, the lever still does not engage when the case is on. Any idea what could be the problem? Thank you
I have the 4 slice n the center elements don’t work but outerwear ones do any idea please what’s wrong with it
Mine too
Sadly this fix didn't work on my toaster, but I found another video about a broken heating element, and that can cause the handle to not stay down as well ua-cam.com/video/CgAsgLBmmAQ/v-deo.html. I found a broken element in my toaster but couldn't dismantle it to fix :( Thanks for the video, glad it worked for some people, unfortunately, I wasn't one of them. All the best to everyone with broken toasters, hope you can fix it. We're now ordering a new one online. Our old one was only about 5 years old :(
that ball attachment for my bread lifter is really difficult to twist off any help?
Take a wrench, be brutally
thanks! now I'm having trouble pulling that yellow wire at 3:15. Almost seems like a different model to your smeg
Those stupid things are 2x as expensive as any other toaster. All the smog stuff is way overpriced. They should last 50 years but obviously don’t.
I got mine 2 months ago and can't get the power on thanks but I can't the ball off lol
That still didn’t show the bottom of the grill of the toaster! That’s where oil and grim settles!
How do we get to that?
I tried, did everything you did, didn't work. Never buying Smeg again. Money for nothing and it popped toast out onto the bench and never browned evenly anyway.
Felt smug because i managed to wrench off the lever knob but damned if I can get the casing off, its like its glued on - what is keeping it from coming off, I managed to crack the plastic vent casing in my attempts, any suggestions as to how to get it off anyone?
The first attachment wedge was the most difficult, the rest followed easily. You need to push the wedge outwards. Try to lift the silver plastic a little by the edge and shove in a screwdriver from the inside towards the tiniest holes and push the wedge out while you also lift up the plastic.
BTW I now have some spare plastic vents... Couldn't fix the toaster.
@@olaliljedahl9214 thanks for reply - I managed eventually to get the bottom off by inserting knives as wedges all round then one by one the lugs that were stopping it freed themselves - after all that and following the instructions for the magnet the lever still didnt stay down. So annoying when the toaster looks like new.
@@sheilamaclean968 If the (electro-) magnet does work this would indicate an electrical problem. That probably requires a skilled electrician to fix... In my case, the magnet etc works. it is the inner heating strips which have been "roasted" (probably a due to a short circuit, the house circuit breaker also tripped).
@@olaliljedahl9214 thanks for advice, much appreciated
Mine keeps blowing the trip the elements burnt out and touching earth. Not the quality a had hoped for.
Same problem here. Inner elements are dead now. I opened it up but can't see anything that's burned off. Time for the landfill. Beware of SMEG! Nice looking trash.
I couldnt get the knob off the handle. It turns but does not unscrew. Makes the repair impossible.
Take a pipe wrench
It’s very tight
Try to pull it at the same time you are turning (anti-clockwise)
I put a rubber jar grip opener over it and used pliers, it worked
Thanks for the video. Tried this, but it still doesn't work.
Woooooooooooo!!! Thanks you so much!!!! You are amasing!!!!
Thank you, but I can't get the ball open. Someone would help me, would be nice
You need a wrench and some brutality
repair deliberately made difficult..another scam
Taught me absolutely nothing. Maybe if you explain what you were doing it would help
sorry mark. next time i will explain, what i am doing.
I watched this several times to find the bit where there's actually some fixing of a part all I can see is some rubbing with cotton wool so apart from showing how to disassemble the cover where's the actual fix part?? Such a waste of time
Sorry for wasting your time.
