OMG someone covering Loreena McKennitt! The Book of Secrets is one of my all time most played albums, and for the most part I'm a metal head! Ty so much :-)
I remember that I bought "Book of Secrets" at a record store though I never heard a song of Loreena before. I don`t even remember why I bought it then, but after hearing the first songs I was listening to it for months. Saw her twice in concert then, and she has amazing life performances. I am so glad I discovered her music.
She is from Morden Manitoba. I met her in Stratford Ontario where she was living in the early 1980's. She told me her job was playing her harp in the town square. I had no idea she poseesed this amazing voice (a gift!). I found her 1st LP in a Toronto record store because I remembered her from that meeting in Stratford few years earlier. When I played it I Was simply blown away with the beauty of her voice and the music. I will never forget that humbleness she presented then being poseesd by this wonderful gift. Keep bringing that beauty to the world Loreena!
Loreena is one of our true unsung treasures here in Canada. One of those rare artists whose every track on every album is magnificent. Would love your reaction to any and every one of her songs
I have been listening to her albums for literally decades. Strange, but until I saw this reaction video I always thought she was from Ireland. Always learning something new.

I saw Loreena live last night and it’s the best musical event I’ve ever been to. At 66 her voice is just as incredible as it’s ever been.
For my birthday one year in high school, my friend and her dad took me to see Loreena. I think I was holding back tears through most of it. She is overwhelming.
Her highwayman song is one of my all time favourite songs.
Lorena is one of my favorite singers of all time. I go to sleep with this song. It is one of the most beautiful songs ever.

I’ve been a huge fan of McKennitt for over 20 years. I listened to two of her albums (Book of Secrets & The Mask and the Mirror) on long trips over and over again. Some of the few albums I never skip a song!
Awesome. I saw Loreena in concert last November (2022) and her voice has not diminished. Still ethereal. Still emotional. Still hitting all the notes.
McKennett is from Manitoba but lives near Stratford Ontario. If you really want to hear her she has periodiclly had shows in the Church on the main street of Strratford. As I understand it she is known as a refined dramatic Soprano. Listen to some of her other songs and that delicate voice can blow the doors off.
Don't tell anyone, but I get goosebumps every time I hear here music, and my metal soul melts away. ☺️😂

Loreena is my muse, by far the most enjoyable female singer , musician and composer to be heard. A true jewel to our world.
I've been a fan of hers for many years now and I think she has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices out there. Her live performances of Stolen Child and The Old Ways are definite ones to listen to.
Fact: Loreena posesses one of the most angelic voices in the Universe. And she's also a boss level musician. Check out All Souls Night or Night Ride Across the Caucus. Well done as always Beth, Cheers!

Hers was one of the main voices of the 90's for me. Listening to it brings back so many memories and emotions.
This woman's music is criminally underrated and should be on more reaction channels. I recommend listening to the studio versions of "The Mummers Dance" and "Santiago", she also did some solid versions of these live in the Alhambra too, especially for santiago. Her whole catalogue is really worthy though, I could list dozens of songs. You'd love them all.
I kind of like that so few people have heard of her, relatively. I kind of hate the idea of somebody 'reacting' to her voice and then going on the next week to have equally amazed reactions to some mundane singer.

I honestly never thought I'd see the day that someone did a reaction to Loreena! I love her music.. just so soothing and enchanting. I often take long walks late at night, just to clear my head, and 99% of the time I'm listening to Loreena McKennitt. "The Lady of Shalott" introduced me to her voice 25 years ago or so, I was instantly a fan.

I’m a classically trained musician and I have been a massive fan of Loreena’s for literally decades. She is a brilliant musician, unbelievably creative and so intelligent; there is no one like her. She is incredibly effective at communicating with her spectacular music and voice. She can make anyone who hears her achingly beautiful music cry.
I never manage to listen through this song without bursting into tears. Loreena is in a league of her own, as a singer, as a multi-instrumentalist, as a songwriter. I love her music. Been in love with it for 20 years or so, since I first heard Bonny Portmore on the soundtrack of Highlander 3.

She always touches my heart too and has been with me for 30 years soon. The Mask and Mirror is still one of my top albums of all time, along with a handful of black and doom metal. Love her voice and music so much.
I was there at the wonderful palace the of Alhambra when they recorded this amazing concert. It was in september 2006. A night to remember for sure. She is one of my all time favorit artists. I have listend to her since early 90. She is just wonderful.❤️❤️❤️

I love Loreena McKennitt's song Mummer's Dance too. It has an really cool mix of both Celtic folk and middle eastern vibes too.
What you were saying about her voice sounding frgaile instead of being belted out, to me it's like the sound of a gentle breeze past rather than a howling gale. The softness and flow of it adds to the atmosphere and feel of the song, giving it a more haunting sense
Amazing song
I remember her getting a standing ovation for that song when she performed in Paris. And rightfully so. One of the few songs that's ever outright moved me to tears, and that I still use in my own writing. It's absolutely beautiful, and she puts everything she has into it.
Her voice is delicated like a peach. The arrangements so envolving. All works together very harmoniously. Thanks for your amazing job describing the nuances of the songs.

And don't forget how well the vulnerability in her voice pairs with the lyrics! It does sound like a prayer, specially considering the name probably refers to Dante and his Divine Comedy. In part of Purgatory and through Paradise, Beatrice (who's inspired by a woman in Dante's life) guides his through his trials and symbolizes grace. The way she uses her voice is absolutely fantastic, and somehow it all manages to impart this history without ever really referencing it directly.

Mummers Dance was my introduction to Loreena’s music. It was part of the Mists of Avalon’s soundtrack. I had to look it up, so gorgeous.
One of my absolute favorite artists and this is my favorite song of hers. I have already told my family that "Dante's Prayer" WILL be played at my funeral.

Loreena McKennit has the fragility of Beth Gibbons, but has also the capability of going full Lisa Gerrard, amazing! I have to find out more about her now.

I saw her at the "egg" in Albany NY some time ago and you are so very right ! If anything her live shows are even a bit better than the studio recordings. I had the amazing opportunity to speak briefly with her after the show when she came out into the theater to meet some of the people there-she is as charming and gracious a lady as one could ever meet, very much the angel she seems onstage.
I have been listening to her work for decades, and sometimes when feeling down or troubled for whatever reason, I lay back with headphones and absorb one of her albums, oftimes the eyes will get damp, but by the end, the soul is well and truly combed, and ironed out, she is one of my very favorite singers/musicians, along with Enya, another magical performer, a while back they were in a most real sense powerful medicine to get me through the very lowest, and darkest days of my life, the world is well and truly blessed to have their like here among us, as we are to have Beth as well ! (Methinks Beth likes her because of her hair....)
I've been a fan of Loreena McKennitt for many years. I love her voice and her music styles and how she incorporates such variety of instruments.
There is no artist like Loreena McKennitt in the world of music. Not only do you get to listen to that singular voice that has no limitations, you also get unworldly music that transports you to other times and places, an education in the diversity of musical instruments from around the world, and a history and culture lesson to boot. And all of this from a humble farm girl who only wanted to be a veterinarian and never saw herself as a musician. How sad that she is so relatively unknown while thousands who are little more than clones are so celebrated. If you ever get a chance to see her in concert, don't miss it - it is a transcendent experience.
I've read most of the comments to see if there was anything I should add to inform you about Loreena, the best thing that I love about her beyond her singing, playing, writing, is she is humbled, kind, and doesn't care to be on the front page of the tabloids. She's intelligent, loving, and beautiful inside and out. Her style is Eclectic Celtic. Watch her DVDs, "No Journey's End" and "A Moveable Musical Feast" and not forget "Nights from the Alhambra". Another thing that happens to some people when listening to Loreena, is your imagination ignites and you paint better, write better, craft better, and I'd bet that she is the cure for road rage! I don't mind traffic jams when listening to her. I've never tired of listening, it's been over 30 years of her singing sweetly in my ears. I'd rather go blind than deaf.

I saw her in concert back in 94 or 95. The way they lit her on one song made her look like her head was aflame with her gorgeous ginger hair. Excellent show.

Thank you for reviewing Loreena! I knew what was coming and just loved seeing your reaction. The first time i heard one of her songs, i stood there with chills and tears. I had no clue who was singing, but I needed to know and hear more. (this was back when it wasn't easy to find an artist) I've listened to her ever since and hope to one day see her live.
This is from the Alhambra concert. I had the DVD at one point but lost it. I believe the show is from 2007. If you can find it it's worth listening to it in it's entirety. It's Loreena at her absolute best

I have been listening to her do this song for years. It still brings tears to my eyes. I've played it at night to relax an untold number of times. When I was really struggling with mental health issues in my early 20's, I used to put on her "Dark Night of The Soul," and take a bath in the dark. I always found incredible peace in her music. She's stunningly talented like very few are.
I just saw her live for the first time in Edmonton, Alberta. I have loved her since I was 14 years old. I have to say, she is even more exquisite in person. Her voice has not aged one day. Simply magical!

I have always loved this song and I have to say every time I hear it I close my eyes and see the figure skater Michell Kwan skating her program to it.
Old memories for me. She is/was my favourite folk artist. And I found her long ago just looking for irish folk. It started with a Clannad music which i found because of very old Robin Hood TV series. In that time i didn't even know about such folk music (as it is not in a mainstream). But I found their music and then tried to find similar music and Loreena McKennitt was my favourite from these artists :). It is also funny as some time before I found her music this way i also listened to one of her songs in radio (it was only one time and did now know who it is) and then unsuccessfully try to find it :). That is why it was also nice that I rediscovered that song and realised it was her :).

She's one of my favorites. I have seen her live three times and it's a joy each time. I missed her this year though. This song makes me cry. All of her music just transports me to another time when listening.

Loreena is my absolute favorite singer of all time. I saw her live in 2016 and met her after her show, such a sweet soul and the talent and skill is remarkable. I highly recommend listening to her performance of The Bonny Swans from this same concert "Nights from the Alhambra" it's really upbeat and showcases that robust and lilting headvoice she has.
You REALLY need to hear her song "Ancient Pines". Please please please. There's no lyrics, just pure vocal majesty.
That song, and this one are my two favorites of hers. As much as I love the live version of Dante's Prayer, the studio recording has a subtle and hauntingly beautiful mens chorus in the intro and outro of the song that just... chills every time.

I saw Loreena in LA and it was breathtaking. We had front row balcony seats and the view was amazing. I am so glad I had the opportunity and at such an early age in my 20's.
Fact: her fiance and his father died when their fishing boat sank. She stopped touring for many years after that. She grew up a farm girl. Her life is like something from a sad fairy tale
Thank God that Lorenna McKennitt weaves a tale into every word she sings. With her every note she sings she hypnotizes me with her voice. I'm in a blissful state in love with her voice. She has an opera in every word she sings. Thank God that Lorenna McKennitt came to Earth to energize and thrill us all with her Angelic voice that lifts us up into her tales of mystery and imagination that we love and enjoy with every note that she sings.
Finally, I see someone react to The Fairy ! I've been suggesting Loreena to some channels for years but you just now popped up in my feed. Thank you. Seeing you tear up made me tear up. If you get a chance to see her in person, please do. Its a magical experience.
I was lucky enough to see her live just a few nights ago on her The Visit Revisited tour. Hearing her sing live is truly an otherworldly experience and it was so beautiful. She sounds even better than in the studio versions. I think others have already commented saying this, but it is not an overstatement to say that it is truly life altering.
I would strongly recommend listening to her song Never-Ending Road. The recording from the Nights At The Alhambra concert is fantastic (she sang it at the concert a few nights ago too!).
And then listen to all of her other songs as they are all beautiful!
I attended one of her last concerts in the Cleveland, Ohio area several years back. I was NOT prepared for this performance!! This was the one where she had her full entourage of performers. I did see her in a performance of only key musicians and, although so enjoyable, it didn't have the affect of the full orchestration of performers. I truly say this was the best concert performance experience I've ever had. It was an event I will Never forget. The fact that I was with my now passed on mother, along with my dear niece and sister made it all the more impactful, as we that remain can all look back to that day and remember. This woman is a singular talent...

Loreena McKennett has been a staple in my household since The Visit came out in 1994, when I was 4 years old.
Her music is a direct line to my childhood, and I am so thankful for my mom introducing me to her.
Her talent as a musician and songwriter FAR exceeds the recognition she has gotten in her life.

I've been a fan of Loreena since her Book of Secrets album hit the states.. I gotta be honest, I've considered requesting Dante's Prayer play at my funeral service.. its one of the most beautiful sung songs I've heard in my life.. (and I have heard allot of music in my life)
Great reaction Beth!! Can't tell you how many times Loreena's voice & songs have brought me to tears! Her voice is ethereal in every possible meaning of the word, and her music elicits the deepest emotions in me.

Every time I listen to this song, I wind up in tears. The combination of the music, the lyrics and Ms. McKennitt's ethereal voice does it every time. Living so close to Canada, I was introduced to her music way back in the late 1980's just as her popularity began to rise. I've been a huge fan ever since. I've yet to see her in person, but will have the chance to do so later this year. I cannot wait! If possible, please feature one of her other songs where she releases the full power of her beautiful voice.
Ya gotta check out Loreena's rendition of Bonny Portmore. It's hands down the best version.

I have that album. And about five others of hers. I think Bonnie portmore is a great one I would say her tango to Aurora is one of my favorite bits of music in the world. Marrakech night market is wonderful and her version of The highwayman is amazing. Some of her later things are more well-known such a serenissima and night ride across the cacusas
All her versions are the best (in my opinion), try and listen to some else sing Raglan Road, it's flat, boring, no emotion, no connection to the lyrics to your heart. Loreena is the very best.
My wife and I have had the pleasure of seeing her in concert twice now here in Toronto. We always try to see her show when she plays here. The recordings are really good but nothing like seeing her and the ensemble live ! You won’t be disappointed!

I love Loreena Mckennitt's voice and style. She is so lovely. When she went into the cry at 5:11, I melted! Strings set the mood so well in this piece that I melt like butter with the emotional overtones they instill. Beth I beat you to the tissues on this one. That's awesome that you found Loreena, and her ancient angelic musical style. A deep rabbit hole. Try 'All souls night', by her. And 'Mystic's dream'. I forgot- also try Annie Haslam and Renaissance, right up there with Loreena with even a wider vocal range, doing similar styles but more classical. 'Things I don't understand', and 'Can you hear me' are but a few.

Dante's Prayer, I believe she was reading The Divine Comedy while riding the rails through Europe... Orient express, or the Tran Siberian railroad. It was what inspired Dante's Prayer. This song has always been a joy of mine. Though "The Mystic Dream" is what first turned me onto her music. It felt like a drum or a bell rung in my heart, and I learned what the direction my life would take. Love her!
