  • Dante's Prayer by Loreena McKennit.
Lyrics:When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone
I did not believe because I could not see
Though you came to me in the night
When the dawn seemed forever lost
You showed me your love in the light of the stars
Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
    Please remember me
Then the mountain rose before me
By the deep well of desire
    From the fountain of forgiveness
    Beyond the ice and fire
Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
    Please remember me
Though we share this humble path, alone
    How fragile is the heart
Oh give these clay feet wings to fly
To touch the face of the stars
Breathe life into this feeble heart
Lift this mortal veil of fear
Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears
We'll rise above these earthly cares
Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
    Please remember me
    Please remember me

It’s been 8 years since I lost the most beautiful woman . Stunning, brilliantly smart, classy and a joy to everyone fortunate enough to have known and loved her. But as they say , the candle which burns twice as bright lasts only half as long. Sometimes those who seem the happiest are fighting unbelievable sadness inside. The day of the funeral while driving to the service, out nowhere the CD player started playing this song, all on its own. Before I realized …. It played this piece 3 times back to back , then stopped… silence. The grief in that moment was overwhelming, I had to pull over. I’m a man , and a bit of a hard ass. We don’t show a lot of emotion. We are supposed to be the source of strength . But that day on the side of a highway I wept, the pain of losing her was too much to bear. Love ya Mel … as much now as that night I proposed to you on the beach in the hurricane. I was only mad because I lost you …. It’s been years … and as much as I wish, no amount of rage or frustration can undo the past. It’s like shouting into the darkness and only hearing the echo of your own voice …. No answers . Just silence. I hope you have peace beautiful girl . I’m a better man for having loved you , and I will be forever grateful for that…….and That’s all there is now. Never forgotten .. just the love.

I’ve read lot of comments associating this song to funerals and other sad moments. But I think that the deepest meaning of this song is a very positive one. Dante’s travel to Inferno, Purgatory and Heaven is an ascent from the darkness to the bright light. A travel of the mind that regards more life than death. Dante, after his journey, is ready to live fully and free from the grief of his loss of his beloved Beatrice.

mattiamacgregor Dante's Inferno trip has surely hurt the truth of life and death for centuries. Eternal torments for finite sins? You like this idea? No thank you. I prefer to see a universal God of mercy who takes us all back in and mean ALL.

    • @AbsentWithoutLeaving
      @AbsentWithoutLeaving 6 років тому +46

It seems to me a song of acceptance. The calm after the terrible storm, the silence after the battle. I don't think those wishing it for their final rite mean for it to be sad. It's more of a going to their rest, their peace, and to comfort those who remain in the fray of life. At least that's what the song makes me feel.
And I think many people miss that the refrain is meant to be God's response to the prayer of the singer.

That actually is the message of a funeral exactly as you articulated. As a Reverend I’m always stunned by the fact that as believers all profess a profound belief in “heaven” and a blissful afterlife with God. We all want to go there apparently but no one wants to die. Is that the result of a profound misperception of the afterlife or a complete misunderstanding of the nature of death?

I will think of you and pray. I’m struggling at the moment and hoping that it will pass it was hard enough with my mum but then my dad who I looked up to after her death and was my rock I watched him just before he passed he didn’t linger or suffer and I thank the heavens for that i wish that they where here but I guess life has other plans and they’re up there waiting for me when it’s my turn I will remember them until that day and do what my dad asked just before he passed to be happy without him. It was the only thing he ever asked me and I struggle because he didn’t know that he was what made me happy and my mum they where my gold in life. Cherish every moment with loved ones forget hatred try to forgive pasts and make each day as happy as it can be. Life is too short x sending love to everyone 🥰

This song came to me at a trying time in my life,, I decided to leave my longtime hangout, and in turn, all my friends, found out I had so very few. Soon after, Covid hit! Turned my life upside down! More isolation! Suddenly, all my hangouts were closed. Coffee shops, libraries, even the beaches for God's sake! But this time, instead of going into despair, seeing that big changes were afoot, I rolled with it. And God began to bless me more and more! With knowledge, ( I had Alot of downtime,, and I didn't spend it watching cat videos) and, as it turns out, being as I ended up in a shelter, a place to live! I try to remember to thank God every day! This song was a part of my journey, and it's about a journey, the roads that life can take you down. It's all in the perspective! She actually wrote it on a long train ride across Europe, I believe the Orient express, It's about life from her perspective, a beautiful piece of music to be sure!.. God bless! ♥️🙏🇺🇸

This is stunningly beautiful. At the beginning is a Russian Orthodox choir singing "Behold, the Bridegroom comes at Midnight." It's a beautiful, solemn hymn which we sing in the Orthodox Church during Holy Week. Many people who don't consider themselves religious or Christian can feel the calling deep in their souls hearing the Ancient chants of the Orthodox church. It's surreal.
Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom he shall find watching, and again unworthy is the servant whom he shall find heedless. Beware, O my soul, do not be weighed down with sleep, lest you be given up to death, and lest you be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse yourself, singing, Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O our God. Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us. ♥ ☦ ♥

You do understand the juxtaposition, right?
Imagine for a moment the situation: at that time, it was four years since the fall of the Soviet Union. Siberia was an inhospitable place in which many people had died during the Stalinist deportations. In Siberia many fields of the Gulag were installed, which made it a hell for hundreds of thousands of human beings, with episodes as frightening as that of the Road of the Bones.
My relatives were some of the people in those gulags. 17 motherfucking years my grandfather spent there. Fuck Russia, and Fuck the Orthodox Church. Do you know how they treated Jews throughout history? Fucking monstrous organization.

    • @Mary-wy5cl
      @Mary-wy5cl 5 років тому +14

@@ptanyuh I'm so sorry your family went through this. I cannot account for any of those atrocities, but I can say that mistreatment of other people is not something Orthodox Christians, or the Church, do or support. Many people were thrown into the Gulags simply for being Christian, just as the Jewish people were persecuted for their faith by Hitler during WWII. This is not faith, nor the work of the church, it's Godlessness at the hands of power hungry men. People who truly believe in God, whether Jewish or Christian, don't seek to harm others. The gulags were horrific, and unfortunately seemingly forgotten by much of Western Society, especially here in America. Many remember of the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis, but seem to have a short memory when it comes to the way the Communists treated Christian people, or anyone who spoke against the government. It was truly terrible.

I think in this perspective, the sorrow comes from the experience in hell, the descent.. to know the darkness well and then to rise into the light is a sorrow so great because it causes regret.. at least for me. This song is almost a kind of love song to god from a mournful heart. It’s so beautiful.. gods love is mercy in a dark world unmatched by the love any man could give you. Precarious, indeed. "This, too, shall pass" applies to both the good and the difficult. My fourth husband was the love of my life. It was both wonderful and difficult. I lost him just before the pandemic shutdown. Yesterday would have been our fourth anniversary.

Saw Loreena in person Butler University.
Had an amazing time when someone introduced me to Loreena’s music. I have never been the same. The ache is still with me with no one to share this side of life with me. Have a couple of college degrees but my Bachelor of Music is my favorite. Have written some music, studied conducting for a while with a Russian conductor, am a pilot. But, nothing has filled that void that passion introduced me to so long ago. Passion is still alive but the flame is flickering… waiting…
    Love your music Loreena. ❤

My mother died last night (12-18-2019) and we were listening to my "Enya" station on Pandora. This song came up when she breathed her last breaths. It felt very appropriate to listen about shedding mortal fears as my mom was passing. Her soul was escorted to the beyond with beautiful music and I have my own bittersweet memory of this song now. RIP mommy.

when the dark wood fell before me.
And all the paths were overgrown.
When the priests of pride say there is no other way.
I tilled the sorrows of stone.
I did not believe because I could not see.
Though you came to me in the night.
When the dawn seemed forever lost.
You showed me your love in the light of the stars.
Cast your eyes on the ocean.
Cast your soul to the sea.
When the dark night seems endless.
    Please, remember me.
Then the mountain rose before me.
By the deep well of desire.
    From the fountain of forgiveness.
Beyond the ice and the fire.

Cast your eyes on the ocean.
Cast your soul to the sea.
When the dark night seems endless.
    Please, remember me.
Though we share this humble path, alone.
    How fragile is the heart.
Oh give these clay feet wings to fly.
To touch the face of the stars.
Breathe life into this feeble heart.
Lift this mortal veil of fear.
Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears.
We'll rise above these earthly cares.

It allowed me to connect with my feelings
My lovely mother of 90 had passed and I had trouble connecting with my feelings about her death. The next day I was playing some of Loreena's music and I listened to Dante's Prayer. The tears were flowing down my cheeks. I felt a deep sorrow, but a type of happiness as well. The line "please remember me", was what I felt my mother was saying. The only thing a person can really hope for after dying is that loved ones will continue to "remember" them. I am not religious, but one need not be to be touched by this song and it's strong emotional tones. Six years after my mother's passing and this song still grabs me and lets me mourn her death, remembering how wonderful she was......after all, without our mothers, we would not be here! Thanks so much Loreena for this amazing song and your beautiful voice !!

Behold, the Bridegroom comes at midnight, and blessed is the servant whom He shall find watching, but unworthy is the servant whom He shall find heedless.
Beware, therefore, O my soul, do not be weighted down with sleep, lest you be given up to death, and be shut out of the Kingdom. But rouse yourself crying: Holy, Holy, Holy art Thou, O God! Through the Theotokos, have mercy on us.

My son Dante died of covid during the peak of the pandemic. I've been in a deep dark depression ever since. My stepdaughter and I were by the bonfire celebrating the upcoming solstice and decided to play some Irish folk music and this popped up. It was an answer to my prayers.

I hear this song and am reminded of Jesus Christ, standing before his glory and awesomeness. This brings humility, humbleness and peace within my soul.i pray that if you are listening to this song that you'll give your life to Christ and trust him as lord and savior. This world is not what we're living for only. Jesus is in his throne full of power and calling us to him, thus don't burden your heart. Surrender yourself to him and accept him as lord and savior. I look forward to seeing you in heaven if you believe in Jesus. Blessings to all!

This is Celtic music. Pagan. It has nothing to do with jebus. XD
