And he gave it to our other brother. We kept that car in the family for well over 20 years and 300k miles. I also picked up a 1991 Toyota Corolla GT-S from a friend in the early 2000's for cheap. I just got a 2022 C-HR with the launch gear and I can say I am impressed with it, especially in Sport mode. It gets me up to 40-45 fast before the CVT begins to take over and the economy picks up.
My first car was a 2007 Matrix XR.... even when *everything* started to fall apart on the car, it still ran like a clock, got good gas mileage and wasn't a headache to own. I miss it to this day
We bought the XSE last November, and we have about 9,000 mi on it. But forget the CVT, we got the manual transmission. Overall, it gets around 31mpg. I wouldn't call it a "Hot" Hatch. It's more of a Lukewarm Hatch, instead.
I got the 6 speed XSE back Nov 2019 and I love the car. I do wish it had more power though. I might have to trade it in if they do make a GR verion of this car though.
Had planned for this my next car purchase. Life intervened. Getting a Tacoma instead. But would love one of these in the manual. All the reviews have said the car will actually help you along the way while you are learning to drive a stick. Rev matching and such
Got myself a se corolla hatchback with the cvt trans in the flame blue color, 42 miles to the gallon and I can fit my 65 liter rucksack and 3 detachable fishing poles with tackle box. Couldn't be happier
I used to have a hatchback and a scion xb but traded it in for a new RAV4 and man I must say I miss the hatchback, but the rav fits our need more 🙂 both great cars
i got one for 21k in late 2018. going on 3 years with 15k miles, no problems except recall on the transmission which they replaced under warranty free of charge of course

Thank you, Scotty! How did you know that I was waiting for you to make a video of the Corolla hatchback? After watching most of your videos, I have decided on it to be my next car.
Just purchased a 2019 Corolla Hatchback. For me it's just like a sports car.Make sure it is Made in Japan.Think all the manuals are but juat to be sure.Good luck.
I just ordered a 2022 corolla hatchback 6 speed manual today and trading in my 2010 challenger rt 6 manual. Figured our 03 corolla has made it to 240k miles with no issues time to give this one a chance
I was going to special order a 2022/2023 Challenger Scatpack R/T 392 WIDEBODY from the factory but I heard Dodge 5.7 and 6.4 V8 engines have the "HEMI TICK" early valve lifter failures with MDS issues on the automatic transmission equipped Challengers running in ECO MODE on 4 cylinders. Also lots of class action law suits on these issues with Dodge not acknowledging these problems from 2009 to current new Challenger. Are the above issues the reasons you are selling your Challenger V8 5.7 or 6.4 for a Toyota Corolla?🤔 Or are you having reliability issues or high maintenance issues on your V8 Challenger?
I lovvee my 2023 hatchback xse, I’ve heard some interesting reviews on it but it’s a fun drive for me and I get compliments all the time. She’s definitely got some pick up, really smooth, a little loud on the Highway but other than a missing sun roof I have zero complaints. Also I was able to fit a mid sized tv stand in my trunk/car with the seats down.
Scotty, I went and looked at the HB and thought "this looks like something an old maid school teacher would drive", then I hear it's a CVT with a manual option (thank God). One thing I like about Hyundai is their avant-garde styling.

Please, do forgive the failings of one who lives in the back-of-beyond Saskatchewan. Now to me, that was 'style' but what does a crusty old bastard like me know, eh?
@@Hschlick84 But isn't as fun as driving a manual on curvy roads. You learn to use the gearing instead of the brakes in traffic (at least that's what I do and brakes last longer in manual than automatic transmission. In manual you can stay in lower gears. CVT transmission won't last as long.
I had an 03 Pontiac Vibe and was best car I have ever owned. I drove the the Scion IM (predecessor to new Corolla hatchback). It was great on highway but drove like a truck on rough New England roads. Plus interior was smaller with less headroom.
Having been a matrix owner I have to slightly disagree with you the matrix was better than the Corolla I am in the Corolla hatchback that they have at now because it came with all wheel drive a really good manual version the suspension was awesome the drive train was amazing and it was bigger way bigger. I'm glad that they have something to challenge the Volkswagen r but I really miss the ruggedness of the Toyota Matrix.
Same here, would love an awd manual matrix brand new....The cross could have had a manual transmission....but i'm not gonna wait for toyota on that....
I just got one of these in a 6 Speed and I feel like these cars (HB SE and XSE) are HIGHLY overlooked for a fun DD. I'm coming from a tuned Mk7 Golf R and a Kia Stinger GT2 and this thing is still plenty of fun to me. The iMT stuff in this really makes daily driving a stick shift a dream and you even get adaptive cruise. Rev hang is minimal stock as well. Also another interesting thing to mention is that the 2L in this uses the 4-DS system which has both Direct Injection and Common fuel injection so your valves stay clean. I cannot recommend one of these enough. Yes it's a little slow, but driving a slow car is fun, and 170HP isn't a slouch either in a manual you can control the rev range on.
That's a good looking toyota but I'm gonna find it hard to separate myself from my 2012 camry se-v6 with dual exhaust and a sunroof. She's my Silverhawk and i love her everyday. I'm literally outside on a beautiful day in texas cleaning her inside and out. She's so perty.🥰
Test drove a Corolla hatchback. The hatch with the seats up is TINY. Part of the reason I bought a ‘22civic hatchback. That one in comparison is huge. The Corolla hatch would barely hold one piece of luggage. Good car otherwise I’m sure but way too small for me.
I went to test drive one when these came out. I left without even test driving one because it was so cramped. Ended up buying a Honda Fit. The old Matrix is waaaaay more useful.
Matrix had significantly more headroom than the same-year Corolla. It was visibly taller than the Corolla. This gave them a more upright seating position and better ingress/egress, and made them much easier to live with. This new hatch does not appear to have much, if any, additional headroom.
As a former 1st Gen Matrix owner, and a current Corolla HB owner, I can concur. It’s smaller. Less leg room. Smaller trunk, and lower seating position. Definitely not a crossover. On the other hand, it’s far more fuel efficient and out accelerates even the first Gen Matrix XRS. Handles great. Stiffer chassis. But definitely a smaller non-crossover hatchback.
I've owned an '07 Corolla LE, a '17 Corolla iM (formerly Scion), and now a '20 Corolla HB XSE. The '07 had the most rear room, but the iM and the HB have the versatility of a hatch. The iM seemed smaller from the driver's seat than the new HB, but had more rear seat room. There is a huge difference in power, too. The '07 and '17 Corolla had a 1.8L, but the new models get a very responsive 2.0L. Getting out of the new HB rear set as a 6'2" adult is not fun, but my kids are grown and this wasn't a deciding factor for me. Honestly, if they sold the Corolla Touring (wagon) in the US, I would have probably purchased one for the extra cargo space over the HB.
You're right about the tiny engines, Scotty. The irony is the 3-cylinders that they were introducing during my last few months at a GM dealer actually get WORSE gas mileage because they don't have enough power off the line.
I once had the 2017 Kia Soul+ and I was surprised on how small those 4-cylinder GDI engines were. Long story short, I sold it and eventually got a used 2010 Toyota Prius. Not as cool-looking as the Soul, but no regrets whatsoever.
My last car was a 2005 Pontiac Vibe..Basically a Toyotiac? 5spd manual... I loved that car.. rear seats folded flat.. high ceiling.. could fit a full size appliance washer/dryer/stove in the back Moved on to a Subaru Forester.. ok...but I could fit more in the Vibe.
I've owned a number of cars over the years, but my favorite by far was my 2005 Matrix. It's the car by which I judge all other cars. Sadly, it was totalled in an accident. I love my 2022 Kia Niro, but I would have gladly bought a Corolla hatchback if they came as hybrids. I just don't trust Kia for longterm reliability.
a suv is basically a station wagon. same with a hatch. a nice station wagon with all of that extra room, protection, a real bumper, some ground clearance, with a manual and less unnecessary electronic crap would be great.
Haha, very entertaining. I might need one of these. When everything goes to crap, I could always deliver food for Uber eats or pizza places with a Corolla. :D Unfortunately the Toyota dealers tell me they have so many preorders that they have no ETA's on them as they're months out, and Toyota has closed ordering, so I can't even put in an order for one. :(
My wife works a part time job for grub hub at night, she has an 09 Honda fit sport 5 spd, 194k miles , hasn't needed anything but maintenance, and tie rod ends and stabilizer links, but that's bc our roads suck, and I replace those at like 186k miles. Even has the original clutch
Toyota Corollas are the best cars out there. I’ve owned a 2006, 2014 and currently own a 2018 model year. I’ve never had a problem. I can trust they will start when I turn the Ignition and will take me from point A to point B for years without any problems. That is why Corolla is the best selling car in the world.
I think you can't go wrong with this one! This was on my list too but I decided not to get another vehicle. The only other hatch you can get is probably the Civic but this Corolla is much smaller than the Civic.
3 cylindar doesn't hold up over time Scotty? Hey buddy I have 2 2001 honda insights one has 358,000 the other 236,000; and I still drive them; they do have manual transmissions that as I noted before this is the key to a car lasting. Porsche 911s, Corvettes with manuals, VW bugs w manuals - even the early cars; with a manual and some one that understands the power band to keep the cars revs in - will let the car run forever. It is automatics that kill cars; they fail, they lag the engine, they are costly.
I don’t get the idea of people saying manual is more fun. I’m on my first ever auto and I love it, wish I’d got one sooner. Even racing drivers using auto’s with paddle shift.
Owner of a 2010 Pontiac Vibe, which is a Toyota Matrix in American sheet metal. One of the best cars I’ve ever owned. 155,000 miles and still runs well. Engine is still OEM and the transmission. Not bad for an 11 year old car.
Lol! You keep tell the truth! I hope you're watching your 6 because I'm sure you're having a affect on a lot of crappy auto sales companies 👍🏻Good job!
Sound Tip: Use a High Pass Filter and EQ out some of those loud bass frequencies. Your audience will enjoy the audio without hearing their sound speakers buzzing when you speak at times. Keep up the good work!
They should’ve called it the Matrix. You see Toyota has brought back the Venza which they discontinued years ago and today it’s a solid suv, my only problem is why they didn’t use the V6 Hybrid instead of the 2.5 4 cylinder.
Loved this review very funny and brilliantly informative I’ve just purchased a GR sport 1.8 and I couldn’t be more pleased thanks Scotty for the review 👍🇬🇧
Dear Scotty: If I ever give up my 2017 prius which has given me zero problems (a patch on a tire 2 months after I bought it, and a new tire last week) I solemnly swear I will look at a Toyota corolla matrix hatchback. But not in red.

And he gave it to our other brother. We kept that car in the family for well over 20 years and 300k miles. I also picked up a 1991 Toyota Corolla GT-S from a friend in the early 2000's for cheap. That was a great car too!!

My first car was a 2007 Matrix XR.... even when *everything* started to fall apart on the car, it still ran like a clock, got good gas mileage and wasn't a headache to own. I miss it to this day
I once bought an old Toyota Sienna that looked like a piece of crap on the outside, but still runs and drives great. Still good A/C too.
I love how Scotty is amazed by improvements over his 40yr old rolla
He seems so happy
I was gonna like but you are on 69
We bought the XSE last November, and we have about 9,000 mi on it. But forget the CVT, we got the manual transmission. Overall, it gets around 31mpg. I wouldn't call it a "Hot" Hatch. It's more of a Lukewarm Hatch, instead.
Good a cvt would cost you more and break more

I got the 6 speed XSE back Nov 2019 and I love the car. I do wish it had more power though. I might have to trade it in if they do make a GR verion of this car though.

i got one for 21k in late 2018. going on 3 years with 15k miles, no problems except recall on the transmission which they replaced under warranty free of charge of course
I own a 1988 Toyota Corolla fx (hatchback) 1.6 liter with a 5 speed manual trans. Slow as all hell but ridiculous reliability! I’ve driven it on a 7 hour trip across California and over the grapevine to San Diego.

That launch gear design for the CVT is actually pretty cool. Hopefully more car companies adopt this technology. Cough cough Subaru.

Agree. I'm waiting for Subaru to release a retro Impreza RS coupe. Yeah. That's gonna happen. Or even a WRX hot hatch.

Are the above issues the reasons you are selling your Challenger V8 5.7 or 6.4 for a Toyota Corolla?🤔
Or are you having reliability issues or high maintenance issues on your V8 Challenger?
I like the Corolla hatchback. Only thing is, I wish it got better reviews for rear seat comfort.

Also I was able to fit a mid sized tv stand in my trunk/car with the seats down.

I totally agree with your comments, we have a Toyota corolla hatch and love it, beautiful to drive very comfortable.
Can’t wait for Scotty to give his thoughts on the 2022 Honda Civic Hatchback
I have learned so much from watching this channel. Thank you, Scotty! 😊

That sucks, it should have been at least as big as the iM hatch before this latest one…
I went to test drive one when these came out. I left without even test driving one because it was so cramped. Ended up buying a Honda Fit.
The old Matrix is waaaaay more useful.
You should has get Mazda 3 hatch
I have a 2010 matrix and it won’t die. I will be getting the Corolla hatchback in 2022. I like the reliability and low maintenance
Greetings from Germany. Got a 21' 2.0 wagon. Totally happy so far.

I LOVE my Matrix!! 230k and driving to Florida 10 hours this week...
You're right about the tiny engines, Scotty. The irony is the 3-cylinders that they were introducing during my last few months at a GM dealer actually get WORSE gas mileage because they don't have enough power off the line.
The cars that GM is putting these little engines into are just too heavy for these engines to pull around. They lack power and get poor fuel economy.
I once had the 2017 Kia Soul+ and I was surprised on how small those 4-cylinder GDI engines were. Long story short, I sold it and eventually got a used 2010 Toyota Prius. Not as cool-looking as the Soul, but no regrets whatsoever.
