I still rate Pure Steel’s 3rd placing in the Inter Dominion Grand Final of 1980 as the greatest performance I have seen from a pacer and I was there the night that Mount Eden won the Miracle Mile

Steelo was The Greatest animal I ever saw. An inspiration that drove me to achieve many things I thought I could never do like winning a $1000 Award at Syd University for s Masters' Dissertation. Heart heart and more heart and learn to suffer and keep striving.

Arguably the greatest run ever seen at Moonee Valley. What an amazing effort! Pure Steel broke Rip Van Winkle's heart that night

I am a great lover of the trots and Pure Steel is my pick of them all. He also won a Miracle Mile sitting 3-wide most of the way at Harold Park.l am now waiting with great excitement to see just how good Ride High and Lochinvar Art are.

What a horse - how tough was he? He and Gammalite used to amaze me. They never had the pure speed of horses like Rip Van Winkle, Mitchell Victory, Koala King or "Poppy" but boy did they have some bottom to them. I was dumbfounded the night Pure Steel sat wide and won the Miracle Mile he just kept coming - he was something else.

Every generation or so there is a horse that is born that just is better then the rest . They refuse to lose, Pure Steel is my favorite Aussie /NZ horse ever..Wish they would have brought him to the States, would have been amazing to see him vs. Niatross at a few different distances..

    I was 16 back then!
My mate and I used to go to Albion Park, "as a matter of course!" and I was always on either "🐨👑" or Amphion! (amph won by, "length of straight!" once) Some great horses 🐎🐴🐎🐴, Gammelite, Tarport John, Lucky Mission, Maori's idol, Sam Simeon, Pure Steel, Romantic Chris, Tidy Jason, Locarno, Stanley Rio, Under a Cloud, Rip Van Winkle, Hondo Gratten, Popular Alm, just to name a few! Those were, "the great days of Harness Racing!" cheers 🍻 and good luck! ✨

I used to go as well starting from about 1980. I remember Amphion and also another fast horse Leyoro Star, plus all the ones you mention from that era. Double Agent's battles with Gammalite. Ardstraw, Gundary Flyer, Doubter, Koala King all visitors at different times. I saw Paleface Adios race near the end of his career, he held several of the track records at the old track. Wondai's Mate racing as a 2yo/3yo at the old track. Golden era, would be packed on a Saturday night, big bookmakers betting ring under the stand, Andy Pipos doubles bookie as well. Remember all that?

West Aussies were very prominent at that time. Don't forget Mount Eden and Village Kid.

Dead set mate. Throw in San Simeon & Preux Chevalier too. Then a bit later Jack Morris and Baltic Eagle also very nice types.

Right there, those 3 horses Paul O'Hara. Wow!! I was just a little tacker back then but lots of great memories from my folks taking us to the Trots and watching them on tv. Pure Steel is my pick with Mount Eden and Village Kid next in line.

This is against a Top Class field of Group 1 and Derby winners over 2 Miles. Not like the garbage Winx strolls past every start.

I have heard a lot of stories over the years regarding this race but this is the 1st time I have actually seen it. Fantastic effort by Pure Steel to win after having a tough run outside Rip Van Winkle, but looking at this now it seems the race was run to suit Pure Steels style of turning it into a staying contest, as they both (Rip & Steelo) took off with 700m to go, Pure Steel was getting very tired at the end, but to say Rip Van Winkle's heart was broken that night is a huge exaggeration, if anything Rip Van Winkle was coming back on the line and only just missed the place. Rip Van Winkle was never going to out stay Pure Steel, a huge effort to only go down by 2 metres.
