  • Ancient Civilizations of the Middle East is a civ building, area control style board game where up to 6 players vie for control of map. GMT's most recent offering in this series of wargames adds some terrain, religion, and other nuances to set it apart from it's predecessor: Inner Sea.

Thank you both for your kind words, your thorough explanation of the game, and for telling your audience how much you enjoyed playing the game. The third in the series, Ancient Civilizations of East Asia, is ready for playtesting among our core design group.

As always a great stream and very interesting top 10. It's never too late to do a top 10. Thanks again , for the time and effort you both put in, it's greatly appreciated

Great review, guys, thanks! I just played this for the first time this past weekend. We had a blast. BTW, there is a hand limit of seven cards. Anytime you gain a card over your seventh, you must discard down to seven.

I do enjoy this one and it's predecessor ACIS (Inner Sea) as a Convention game especially; playing with 5 or 6 players is really the most fun, with all the chaos. I've tried ACIS solo a couple of times and it's ok, it's a different challenge, but this shines when you play at higher player counts. But best to put a time limit on it otherwise yeah, it can get long if folks aren't as into it or are tired after a long day of gaming.

This is a very good euro style war game. Really captures a overview of ancient dynastic cycles. Something satisfying about swingy map painting games.

I just find its funny for wargamers to call this euro chaos. No dice. 😂
Here I stand, a better game is far more chaotic. 1d6 roll makes or breaks some factions, and its an amazing game. Feel like you don't have agency in this, try fathering a healthy male heir as Henry viii in HIS.
The selling point of the game is the brutality of the cards, some people will hate that. The thing is there is no shortage of pain to dish out, so its fair in that you will get to take it out on the table after getting wrecked for taking an obvious lead.

I own this game but have never played it. I bought it thinking it might be one of the few games I could get my partner to play because it seems lightweight enough and covers a topic she is very interested in. Unfortunately it seems like it won't be much fun as a 2P game and i'm not sure it really captures much of the actual history. I'm thinking of selling it. Are there any other good games that cover real ancient history (especially in the Middle East), works well with 2 players, isn't too complex, and isn't all about military conquest?

At this scale? Not really. I feel like many are the law multiplayer affairs that heavily involve military conquest.

Play it two CIVS vs two CIVS. each person owning two civilizations and the game ends when one person owns all 4 starting lands. That makes the game fun and tactical. Instructions are in the Playbook. @@ThePlayersAid

Polis is an amazing game for two players. A bit on the complex side, and quite unforgiving, but lots of resource management and tension outside of direct conflicts!
